Anti-Science Lunacy of the Day: GOP Lawmaker Disproves Climate Change with a Thermometer

Environment • Views: 45,050

Youtube Video

It’s difficult to understand why anyone would ever get the impression that anti-science lunacy runs rampant in the Republican Party.

Louisiana state Rep. Lenar Whitney (R) is accusing liberals, such as former Vice President Al Gore, of advancing “the greatest deception in the history of mankind” — man-made climate change — in a scheme to empower the executive branch and increase taxes.

“A specter is haunting America,” Whitney, who is running for Congress in Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District, warned in a campaign video released Wednesday. “It is perhaps the greatest deception in the history of mankind.”

Mocking Gore’s 2006 Academy Award-winning climate change documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” Whitney claimed that the planet “has done nothing but get colder each year since the film’s release.”

“Quite inconveniently for Al Gore, and for the rest of the politicians who continue to advance this delusion, any 10-year-old can invalidate their thesis with one of the simplest scientific devices known to man: a thermometer,” Whitney said, citing record sea ice in the Antarctic sector.

Yes, but there is record Ice LOSS in the ARCTIC section.

I wish they would go ahead and have the encourage to say what they really WANT to say, and that is “Science is the greatest deception in the history of mankind.”

*except Science directly related to extracting oil out of the ground and science directly related to dropping bombs and killing (brown skinned) people. Evangelicals are solidly behind this sort of science.

Sorry, OT but just posted this downstairs

I have a question about marriage equality bumber stickers…

I have the standard one from HRC with the blue background and the yellow bars in the middle.

However, I sometimes see another sticker that is just three horizontal bars. Often the top and bottom bars are black so that on darker cars only the middle bar shows up. I was wondering if anyone else had seen these and if they are (1) just another version of the marriage equality sticker (2) some kind of anti-marriage equality message or (3) not related to marriage equality at all.

Unfortunately whenever I’ve seen these there haven’t been any other stickers on the car that would help interpret the message, if there is one.

I’m fully expecting the climate change denialists to claim it isn’t changing and global warming doesn’t exist because NYC didn’t have a 90 degree day in June. Hasn’t happened often, but it does happen.

What they will ignore is that the climate change and global warming affects not just a specific location on the planet, but the whole thing - and global temps keep showing a rise. CO2 levels continue to rise.

And any effort to make the environment cleaner and fewer emissions is met with abject horror from the right claiming that it will destroy the economy (even though those same emissions send folks to the hospital and undermine the economy by making it toxic to drink water, breath the air, or come in contact with the soil in some parts of the country).

Whitney is the first woman to represent Terrebonne in the legislature and the first Republican to hold the District 53 seat.

“…Whitney graduated from Vanderbilt High School in Houma and obtained an associate’s degree in business from Nicholls State University* in Thibodaux, Louisiana.”
en.wikipedia.org

*The school is sometimes referred to as “Our Harvard on the Bayou;” the university bookstore even sells shirts sporting this light-hearted nickname. The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) at Nicholls—which focuses on critical thinking—has the motto “L’esprit engagé,” which means “the engaged mind.”

Probably not renowned for science education.

Used to be annual yellow fever epidemics in a number of US cities until the worked out it was mosquito-borne and also dependent on a reservoir of infected animals for the mosquitoes to transmit the disease between.

Notice how he treats political ideology as being equivalent to a genetic trait. “Conservatives” are “Outbreeding”, as if being to the right on the political spectrum was the same thing as being a sub-species of human. It assumes, as so much of Right-wing ideology does, an unquestioning obedience to an arbitrary authority figure (one’s parents) such that dissent is an unthinkable non-option. Conservatives are not people who have arrived at rational conclusions based on observations and logic, they are “bred”. Like dogs.

Very telling.

These morons don’t just want freedom to oppress, they want to destroy the planet as well.

It’s 93 deg here and 67% (or better) humidity and feels like a damned sauna outside, as a trip to the store just revealed.

I’m still debating whether or not to get freon in my car a/c and get it going. Or just use the sun roof and windows for cross ventilation. I mean, if I’m going to be using something that’s bad for the environment, I’d rather it be inside the apt where it’s not moving. Besides, I keep the thermo on 77 and it’s quite tolerable in here (when I’m watching TV I need a throw), and only a $99 elec bill for most of June.

First world problems, doncha know.

Wait, Intercept editor John Cook is “on vacation?”

Really? Don’t you have to actually do some work first before you get to go on vacation?

Freaking unreal. They’re soaking Omidyar for all he’s worth.

And it’s been how many weeks since Greenwald threatened to name names - and he’s yet to name a single one. You mean to tell me that he couldn’t find a name, even one, of an American citizen among all those Snowden docs who got NSA treatment that somehow violated US law?

I’m shocked. Shocked.

We go from an out of control NSA to realizing that the only one out of control is Greenwald with hyperbolic and bellicose statements about how the NSA is running amok and must be constrained over its rampant and unfettered spying on US citizens (which is simply not true, despite his protestations to the contrary).

I had to put solar film (blocks 99% UV, 45% Visible, 10% IR) on all my windows this year. Why? Because without it, the temperature in my flat easily goes up to 35°C/95°F from the sunlight. When I moved here 20 years ago, I only had occational days, maybe weeks when the temps would spike that bad.

Last year? Things had escalated to the extent that I had to put the oscillating fan on and leave at least 3 windows open in the flat in mid-May. I didn’t shut the fan off or close the windows (bar torrential downpours) until September. I hope that the film will work.

Now, I live in downtown Stockholm, 59°19’46”N 18°04’07”E. I have a 6-lane road right outside the window (live on the 4th floor thankfully). The noise and the dust issue is minor compared with the heat problem. And I’m not the only one with the issue, not in the building, not in the city or even the Stockholm county area.

<rant>
And still the right wingers are harping on HURR! DURR! gloBULL warning is a liBULLar conspiracy to stifle free enterprise, the scientists are all on the take. etc. etc. etc. And US rightwingers are exporting that mindless incoherent BULLSHIT to rightwingers here (yes, I’m beginning to hear the same arguments from conservo’s this side of the pond, not only on climate issues but other issues as well).

And I haven’t even mentioned winters yet. They’re major league fucked up (pardon my French) as well. Something is amiss —BIG TIME— with the climate and it needs our motherfucking attention motherfucking NOW (again, pardon my French).

These retrobulbarly evacuated individuals are playing not only with the lives of their electorate, but the lives of many on this planet we call home. The only home we got.

If we fuck this place up (pardon the French again), we might well not get a second chance. As in GAME OVER. I’ve seen preliminary worst-case scenarios that raise that possibility. Not involving nuclear exchange, but simply the cumulative effects of famine, disease, conventional war and climate mayhem.

Fuck ‘em. We need strict conservation measures now. But how we’ll get them in the US, or when, if ever, is debatable. It’s going to take outages, floods, worse weather more than likely. Even then, there will be those who have the attitude that if they have the money, they’ll do as they please.

I usually keep the plantation blinds closed so no direct sun enters the apt, and the exterior LR wall with the front door is solid, with a window only on the kitchen (a Pullman type), and another on the opposite end. There’s also a sliding glass door on that end, too, but it gets morning sun and not the hot, direct sun of the afternoon which the solid wall blocks. Around noon, the sun has gone over the apt, so it’s bright in the am, darker in the pm but I leave an 11 watt bulb on in the LR to brighten it up more since I don’t leave the front door open to the sun.

More on Kentucky’s SSM ruling this morning:

Kentucky had argued that legalizing gay marriage would harm the state’s birth rate. “These arguments are not those of serious people,” wrote US district judge John Heyburn. “Though it seems almost unnecessary to explain, here are the reasons why.

“Even assuming the state has a legitimate interest in promoting procreation, the Court fails to see, and Defendant never explains, how the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage has any effect whatsoever on procreation among heterosexual spouses. Excluding same-sex couples from marriage does not change the number of heterosexual couples who choose to get married, the number who choose to have children, or the number of children they have.

“The state’s attempts to connect the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage to its interest in economic stability and in ‘ensuring humanity’s continued existence’ are at best illogical and even bewildering…The Court can think of no other conceivable legitimate reason for Kentucky’s laws excluding same-sex couples from marriage.”

It really pisses me off that she (Lenar Whitney in the posted video) refers to the hacked data and communications from the East Anglia research facility. She says that the hacked information proves incontrovertibly that the scientists were falsifying research.

That was what was alleged in 2009 when the story first broke because scientists used terms like “data manipulations” which the conspiracy-minded folk took to be admissions of chicanery. Several different independent scientific bodies have looked carefully at the data, the statistical methods and analytic models employed by the East Anglia scientists and have found no indications of misrepresentation or deception———but still the knuckle draggers continue to list this among scandals alongside Benghazi11!, the IRS, Fast and Furious and whatever else.

Once they fall for something it is TRUE forever. One can practically imagine them still believing in the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and of course, Santa Claus.

The Philippine version does have what looks like a very subtle smart sharpening or unsharp mask adjustment, it appears to be a single global adjustment and doesn’t impact skin tone. It’s apparent when you overlay the two versions in Photoshop and switch the top layer off and on.

The waffles were popularized in the United States during the 1964 New York World’s Fair[74] by Maurice Vermersch of Brussels, Belgium, and was named the Bel-Gem Waffle. Largely based on a simplified recipe for the Brussels waffles, Vermersch decided to change the name upon observing the poor geographical skills of Americans.

;)

I’m going to fix a quick waffle for dinner, that way when I eat it I eat Belgium’s strength. So, if the USA wins, it will be due to tasty carbs with syrup and butter.

“Yes.” clarified David Icke, “the families in positions of great financial power obsessively interbreed with each other. But I’m not talking about one earth race, Jewish or non-Jewish. I’m talking about a genetic network that operates through all races, this bloodline being a fusion of human and reptilian genes.” He threw up his hands. “And now, suddenly, the idea is that I’m saying it is a gigantic Jewish plot. But let me make myself clear - this does not in any way relate to an earth race.”

[…]

Fans and TV crews blocked his path. He hesitated for a moment. But then, miraculously, a gap appeared, a window of opportunity. Michael opened his coat, retrieved his pie, and took aim. The meringue pie flew through the air. It lightly brushed David’s sleeve and continued its journey. It splattered, with a devastating thud, all over the children’s book section.

“Well,” murmured David, brushing the pastry flakes from his jacket, “that massively backfired.”

“We’re just booksellers,’” said the store manager softly. “You’re wrecking the store.”

“Shame,” said some old ladies. There were sad tuts of disapproval.

The manager produced a sponge and began gently to clean the children’s books. “Please leave,” he said.

And, as the anti-racists slipped quietly away, a few members of David’s entourage grinned behind their hands. Later, over dinner, I heard one of them murmur, “Well, the fat Jews fucked up.”

David didn’t hear this comment. When they saw that I had, they blushed and fell silent and said nothing like it again

I guess what I mean is that you have to assume he’s telling you the truth. Of course this is true of all journalism to some extent, but “proper” journalism is fairly rigorous about providing enough detail that someone could have a decent shot at verifying it, if they had the time and energy to do so.

With Ronson’s “fat Jews” statement, though, where do you start?

Yes - to some extent. But to say “someone in X’s entourage made the following sotto voce racist comment” is, for me, tricky, because you’re essentially accusing X of (at best) tolerating racism in a way that is very, very difficult to refute. I see it as being close to “when did you stop beating your wife”.

This is actually my bigger problem with Ronson, I think. If he toned down the “isn’t this crazy” stuff, or even just presented it in a less ambiguous way, he would be more effective in exposing the stuff he covers. As it is it becomes easier to dismiss it.

To continue this example, why didn’t he try to find out who this particular member of Icke’s entourage was? He could (presumably) have asked him, or Icke, for his name. If the guy had refused to answer, Ronson could have reported that refusal.

By publishing a name, or some more identifying information, of course, Ronson/The Guardian open themselves up to a libel case. But that’s what gives you the confidence that the phrase was, in fact, spoken.

256 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator  Jul 1, 2014 3:05:34pm

re: #255 iossarian

I’m not sure I agree with this particular argument. How do you know he didn’t know who the member was? He didn’t publish his name, but the name would be out of place in the context - it’s not a news item, it’s an essay.

And, as the anti-racists slipped quietly away, a few members of David’s entourage grinned behind their hands. Later, over dinner, I heard Jack Jackson murmur, “Well, the fat Jews fucked up.”

Sure, this could have been written, but the reader doesn’t care about names of some random guys in Icke’s circle, so this kind of breaks the narrative flow. Yeah, I get your point about skepticism. But there’s nothing extraordinary in what has been reported here.

257 Fairly Sure I'm Still Obdicut  Jul 1, 2014 3:07:43pm

re: #228 Zamb

That sounds more like based on Catholic stereotypes than any theology…

What stereotypes? Actual Catholics don’t act like that about sex. That’s just Catholic doctrine. There’s a huge difference between the Church and the actual people; the disconnect is so large that it actually brings into question what the identity of a religion is: is it in the doctrine, or how its adherents behave and believe?

258 iossarian  Jul 1, 2014 3:11:36pm

re: #256 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Yeah, I get your point about skepticism. But there’s nothing extraordinary in what has been reported here.

You’d think it was extraordinary if it was reported about your entourage and you thought it hadn’t happened. Again, the problem for me is that it’s presented in such a way that Icke couldn’t really sue for libel even if he did think it hadn’t happened.

As for the essay/news article distinction, that’s really my discomfort with Ronson again - to some extent he wants to have it both ways, presenting “facts” but without the rigor to lend confidence that the stuff he’s reporting actually happened.

259 iossarian  Jul 1, 2014 3:14:43pm
