Xenophobia Runs Rampant as Immigrant Families Are Turned Away by Right Wing Protesters

Fox News calls it “Defending the Homeland”
US News • Views: 40,428

In one of the sickest displays of right wing xenophobia I’ve seen in a long time, protesters turned out en masse in the California town of Murrieta today to wave flags, spew anger and hatred, chant “USA! USA!” and block buses containing hundreds of immigrant families from entering a Border Patrol processing center. Here’s the Desert Sun’s report: Protesters Block Bus at Murrieta Border Patrol.

So awful it’s hard to imagine.

But it gets worse. Because this is the graphic used by Fox News today to illustrate their report:

With an image of the Statue of Liberty, no less.

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses, yearning to breath free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

It may be time to rewrite that inscription to reflect the new right wing reality.

UPDATE at 7/2/14 8:16:26 pm by Charles Johnson

To make things even weirder, Fox News blatantly stole their logo from the video game Bioshock Infinite, a game about a perverse right wing world where racists are in charge:

The pathetic thing about it is they think they’re taking a principled stand. It’s an abject failure of leadership.

8 lawhawk  Jul 2, 2014 5:48:19pm

These folks think they’re defending the homeland but are really subverting the DHS Border Patrol from processing these people. That’s the first step in deporting them.

Not that it matters.

And the same people complaining about the DHS enforcing the existing law will ignore that the DHS lacks the funds and means to deport these people and track their every move once they process them in the first place.

Unlike undocumented Mexican migrants, who are often immediately deported, the U.S. government detains and processes the Central Americans, who are eventually released and given a month to report to immigration offices. Many never show up and join the nation’s 11 million undocumented population, says the National Border Patrol Council, the union representing Border Patrol agents.

So, what to do? Find more money to deal with the problem? Or complain endlessly nothing’s done, and then protest when the DHS is doing something that it is required to do before they can be eventually deported in any event.

I commented on the subject this morning:

When I heard about that this morning, my comment to Mr. w was, ‘Fucking Murrieta is a 30 year old town and they are worried about immigrants?’

I fact-checked myself later. Fucking Murrieta (which sounds like eyedrops but is named for the Basque sheep ranching family that settled there) has been incorporated for 23 years. At least 80% of the people who live there now were not there in 1980.

re: #3 Varek Raith

Little known fact about the Statue of Liberty is that Americans didn’t want it for a good long time. It took years to finally scrape up the funds to build the pedestal on which it stands, and it took that poem to help raise the money (along with a boost from Pulitzer).

Now? They’re going back to their xenophobic roots.

Not the first time Bioshock Infinite got them

Tea Party Group Unironically Utilizes BioShock Infinite Propaganda

As we head into this holiday season, video game news grows relatively quiet and crazy stories start popping out their heads instead. For a bit of a break from the console wars, we turn to the National Liberty Federation, a conservative “Tea Party” styled group which has recently dipped its toes in the video game realm, albeit by accident.

They recently posted the above image to their Facebook page (found via Kotaku), which is a patriotic portrait of George Washington keeping the Irish, Chinese, Arabs and Africans at bay, demonstrating the statement on the picture:

“For God and Country - It Is Our Holy Duty To Guard Against The Foreign Hordes”

Normally, this would just be some good old fashioned racism/isolationism, but as any gamer reading this post will probably know, the image is actually taken from Irrational Games’ BioShock Infinite. The game, out earlier this year, brought players to the fictional city of Columbia, a floating metropolis where the founding fathers are worshiped as gods, and America has become a sort of fetishistic religion. The image is a mural found in the game, and has been used as part of its promotional materials, which is how the National Liberty Foundation likely found it.

That man is an American.

The brother of the late banda singer Jenni Rivera, Lupillo Rivera, showed his support for migrant families and children by confronting California protesters who blocked buses carrying the migrants. Rivera carried a sign saying “Americans Are Immigrants” and waded into the protesters. According to a Telemundo report, he was spit at by protestors who didn’t want the migrants in Murrieta, California and blocked the buses carrying the migrants. Rivera, also a singer of banda with several recordings, shouted at the protesters that the migrants who come to the U.S. are the cooks, hotel workers and baby sitters. His protest came the day before what would have been his sister’s 45th birthday. Jenni Rivera died in a plane crash in December 2012.

I registered R in 1980 because the Dems of the day were a lot like these right wing clowns of today. In 1980 the Republican Party was the party of pragmatism (although I knew even then what the Dixiecrats were going to do to it eventually). I think you still could have made that statement as late as 1990, but certainly by 1994, the party was already looking for a shark to jump.

That game - about 15 minutes. Been playing for about three months - got to 1024 a few times, then saw a hint online about how not to get trapped…kind of spoiled it for me, actually. Building up to the 256s and 512s takes about 8 minutes of constant swiping without even looking at the phone. But knowing when to break the pattern was the key…that took me a good two weeks to figure out.

While I do understand we need to control our borders, it seems to me to be counterproductive to worry quite so much about Hispanic immigrants.

A lot of Mexicans would probably be happy to go back and forth over the border to do seasonal work and then go back to their families, who wouldn’t also have to move up here to stay together.

Folks who get it together to travel thousands of miles-often with their children, probably have the kind of initiative and determination that might make them very good citizens.

I do wish there was something we could do to help Mexico and the Central American countries become better places for their own citizens.

Reich described the two factors as “push factors and pull factors.”

“The push factors are mainly poverty, lack of economic opportunity, and insecurity in the countries,” the former ambassador explained.

“The pull factor is the fact that the United States has basically, unfortunately, this president, unbeknownst to him, has declared an open border.

“When he said that the people who were here before a certain date would be allowed to stay, what the people in Central America heard was if you get to the United States now, in four or five years or in 10 years, the next president is going to say the people that got here before that date or after that day are also going to be able to stay,” Reich said.

“So, this was caused, frankly, by the lack of understanding, on the part of this administration, of what causes people to leave their homes and come to the United States.”

yet again, it’s not what you actually do, say, or believe, it’s a tortured argument that concludes that you do, say, or believe something you never did, said, or believed

re: #163 aagcobb

I like to drop this passage on the Tea Party crowd. Romans 13: 1-7.

1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Oh god yes. There are very real differences between the Spanish spoken in Mexico and other countries in Latin America. Slang, word choice, even tenses all come into play. You could give the same paragraph to three people from three different countries (say, Mexico, Argentina, and Nicaragua) and tell them to translate it and you’d have three different translations.

Sure, it would all be in Spanish, but you’d see the subtle differences in how it’s spoken across Latin America.

There is as much variety among “Spanishes” as there is among “Englishes” around the world, or even more. “I’ll knock you up in the morning” means something entirely different to a Brit and a Yank, for example.

It’s almost like it’s easier to hate people a person doesn’t know than work on improving themselves.

It’s an attitude among Mexicans who believe they are of 100% European descent, with no added Indian or mestizo heritage. Rather similar to the attitude of Southerners who deny any African-American heritage.

Thing is that our brains aren’t really well adapted to all aspects of modern life. Prejudice can keep you alive if the neighboring tribes aren’t friendly. Even today if you see someone coming towards you wearing a ski mask and carrying a baseball bat, a form of prejudice will tend to make you run rather than question whether that is actually a classics professor with an unfortunate skin condition on his way to a softball game.

We need to work on overcoming the counterproductive aspects rather than being ashamed of our ancestors.

Amid this raw bigotry, I want to relay some happier news. Two of my Chinese students have summer jobs in Wyoming. Both had some job-related troubles at first (weird bosses), but are now better situated and quite happy. They said everyone they met (aside from the weird bosses) were friendly, welcoming and helpful. One said the motel owner gave her a lift to the bus stop in Shoshoni, no charge, and the bus driver advised her on how to save money and time on the bus route.

So, we need to remember that these idiots in CA are in the minority. Most Americans are hospitable, deep down inside.

And the Demographics of NeoGomorrah, as I will now call it:

The 2010 United States Census[11] reported that Murrieta had a population of 103,466. The population density was 3,078.1 people per square mile (1,188.5/km²). The racial makeup of Murrieta was 72,137 (69.7%) White (55.7% Non-Hispanic White),[12] 5,601 (5.4%) African American, 741 (0.7%) Native American, 9,556 (9.2%) Asian, 391 (0.4%) Pacific Islander, 8,695 (8.4%) from other races, and 6,345 (6.1%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 26,792 persons (25.9%). The census reported 103,037 people (99.6% of the population) lived in households; that 291 people (0.3%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and that 138 people (0.1%) were institutionalized.

There were 32,749 households, out of which 15,863 (48.4%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 20,577 (62.8%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 3,814 (11.6%) had a female householder with no husband present, 1,642 (5.0%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 1,626 (5.0%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 192 (0.6%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 5,208 households (15.9%) were made up of individuals and 2,248 (6.9%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33.4 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.

There were 35,294 housing units at an average density of 1,050.0 per square mile (405.4/km²), of which 23,110 (70.6%) were owner-occupied, and 9,639 (29.4%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 3.1%; the rental vacancy rate was 7.8%. 73,518 people (71.1% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 29,519 people (28.5%) lived in rental housing units.

Twelve years ago, Portugal eliminated criminal penalties for drug users. Since then, those caught with small amounts of marijuana, cocaine or heroin go unindicted and possession is a misdemeanor on par with illegal parking. Experts are pleased with the results.

The Cochran vote buying story is seriously unraveling now.

Johnson’s only source was Rev. Stevie Fielder of Meridian, an individual who has been charged multiple times with fraud. Johnson admitted to paying Fielder for the story. Screenshots of Fielder’s cell phone showed ambiguous text messages between Saleem O Baird, a Cochran campaign staffer, asking for names and addresses of individuals for cash envelopes.

The Cochran campaign said Johnson’s “story” was ludicrous and fabricated and that the $15 being referred to was for volunteers and the GOTV effort, hence the need for names and addresses for finance reports.

Becoming pretty clear that the whole thing was a pure concocted pantload.

Yes, Finland has passed back and forth between Sweden and Russia, with some opportunities to govern themselves from time to time, but in this case there is a specific family story (among the family still in Finland) about the family descending from a Swedish soldier in the 17th century. Of course, he would have presumably married a local Finnish woman, and so on through the generations, unless there were a lot of Swedes wandering around among the peasantry. Who knows?

Ronald Reagan, 1982:

Much has been said over the years about the diversity of the American people and the vitality and resilience of the American character. Well, that character isn’t centered around any one religious denomination — for in our country there are many religions; everyone has a right to worship God as he or she chooses. It isn’t based on any one ethnic group or race — for our people come in all shades and shapes, and we remain dedicated to the proposition that all of them are created equal.

or perhaps you’d prefer:

God must have placed this land here between the oceans to be found by a certain kind of people and a kind only in one thing: that whatever corner of the world they came from, they had the courage — and the desire for freedom that went with it — to uproot themselves and come to this strange land, beginning back when it was the most underdeveloped land in the world, and come here leaving family and come to a strange language and everything that went with that kind of a move.

re: #180 Lidane

Oh fuck him.

I mean, really? What kind of stupid argument is he making here? That other immigrants aren’t valid?

I think it’s ironic this is all happening mere days before July 4. You know, that day every year that we celebrate how awesome America is and how proud we are of American values?

I might have come here legally, but it was a hard choice to make. It’s not exactly easy to uproot oneself from everything you’ve ever known and then go to a strange new place and basically start an entire new life.

I consider myself lucky. I was welcomed by new family and the church I joined. I’ve made a lot of good friends down here who accept me for who I am and think it’s cool I’m Canadian.

But I can’t help but wonder. What if I didn’t have white skin? What if I spoke Spanish or Arabic or Japanese? Would I be treated differently? Would I still be as accepted? I think honestly the answer is no.

One thing that has been painfully obvious to me since arriving in America six years ago is how politically polarized and misguided this country is.

People on both sides love to talk about how America is the greatest, most awesome nation on all of the earth. Now don’t get me wrong, this is a great country, but we’ve still got a long way to go in many important areas and, in the eyes of many both outside and inside our borders, we are anything but “exceptional”.

These protesters have no freaking clue what these kids are running away from. I bet if they spent one day with the Guatemalan street gangs they’d be begging to come back to America.

This is a multinational struggle that goes way beyond any one country, border or people.

I think we’ve forgotten how to see each other as human. It’s so easy to make distinctions and draw lines when in reality we are far more equal than most of us realize.

This is a battle that shouldn’t be fought with fences, drones and heavily armed agents. It’s battle that should be fought with hearts and minds.

There was a man who lived a long time ago in Israel who had this crazy idea about what might happen if we loved each other a little more.

Perhaps we should think of giving that a try someday. I’m certain the results would amaze everyone.

To you Charles Johnson you never were conservative to begin with but compared to some of your smarmy cousins maybe appeared so, good riddance.

So, are you a native American? You probably aren’t, so that means your family were immigrants at one time. From the Native’s perspective, we’re all illegals.

Do you understand that the protesters were preventing the Border Police from doing their job of sending these people back to their homelands? In other words, they were obstructing federal officers from doing their job. I suppose that’s perfectly OK in your mind.

Do you have any evidence to support the claim that it is a MAJORITY view that we have too many illegals? For your information, certain segments of American business depend on undocumented workers, who work for less than minimum wage and no benefits at jobs most documented Americans wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. Ship all those undocumented workers home, and watch your produce prices soar.

I had heard of the Shoshoni Drugstore, now that you mention it. Slipped my mind till now, though.

My student, Lily, was originally supposed to work in Lander. That job went sour after a week, so she found work in Buffalo but the trick was how to get to Buffalo from Lander. There is a bus, but it stops in Shoshoni and takes eons to reach Buffalo because it either passes through Billings or Denver on the way.

Anyway, she got to her destination. Her classmate Jacob somehow ended up in Sheridan and had to wait for another bus to reach Buffalo. It’s been a learning experience for both of them.

I don’t think “being callous and unwelcoming to strangers” anywhere nearly describes the said story. You can be all that and still not cause them harm directly. The story is about the punishment for actively wanting to bring physical harm to someone, stranger or not.

I registered Republican in 1980 because I still tended to vote for individual candidates, although usually defaulted to Democrats in question and wanted to be able to influence Republican primary voting (AZ was a closed primary state).

I am still registered Republican although I have not voted for one in a general election since 2000…

Thanks for filling me in on the rest of the story, I really only know that the butt-sex aspect of S & G was just a side note that was blown out of proportion by homophobes.

I am reminded of an event in the recently-opened East Germany around 1990 when a group of Third-World refugees was sent to a facility in Hoyerswerda by federal authorities. Right-wing radicals threw firebombs while a crowd stood by and cheered.

These people had never had to deal with immigrant refugees at all in the old East Germany, only the occasional African student, or Vietnamese or North Korean guest worker. They saw the refugees as a serious imposition.

Actually, the last analogy has a few legs. By following that analogy, what the disaster known as Hobby Lobby really means is that her employer can choose which clothes she can buy and use at all times[1] with the money she earned.

But this analogy would be lost in them.

Louis Zamperini Dies; War Hero Served as Inspiration for Angelina Jolie’s ‘Unbroken’

“Zamperini competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a distance runner and went on to fight in WWII as an Air Force bombardier and a POW after he survived a crash in shark-infested waters in the Pacific.

“Having overcome insurmountable odds at every turn in his life, Olympic runner and World War II hero Louis Zamperini has never broken down from a challenge,” the family said in a statement. “He recently faced the greatest challenge of his life with a life-threatening case of pneumonia. After a 40-day long battle for his life, he peacefully passed away in the presence of his entire family, leaving behind a legacy that has touched so many lives. His indomitable courage and fighting spirit were never more apparent than in these last days.” More

Heck, go to 5 random towns in Puerto Rico and ask how the 5 cent and 10 cent coins are called. You’ll get at least that many answers as you visit towns.

Compensation is seriously a joke. Nobody wants to pay for qualified work. I have an interview this morning for what this company calls a “Business Development Consultant” but the job description feels like a call center gig. If they deign to hire me, I’d be given a mandated schedule and an hourly wage. And the pay is laughable. If the number the recruiter gave me is accurate it’s flat out insulting.

Still, I need the work since other employers have either told me I’m seriously overqualified and I’d end up bored in a month or that I need to go and get another degree before I get hired. Ugh.

If you see her name associated with any corporation, steer clear if you’re thinking of buying for the long term. Short? Absolutely.

She’s got awful business sense; she pushed for the AT&T spinoff of LU, which might have been great as a short term boost to AT&T stock, but was a disaster for both companies in the long term.

The Compaq merger was a mess that ruined both companies and their related product lines and to compound that, she wanted to buy the tech spinoff from PwC for $14 billion. IBM ended up buying it for $4 billion.

Safe to say, I’m not a fan. And that’s not counting her political endeavors.

Yes, the process is cumbersome and deportation isn’t assured because of lack of resources to track down those folks after processing, but it’s still the first step. These so called defenders of the homeland thwarted that first step, meaning that far from defending it, they’ve undermined it.

Good job. They serve their GOP masters well.

Hitting HRC for speaking fees? How about hitting the University for spending crazy money on athletics (including paying the coaches more than other public officials in the state) while academics (the real reason for there being universities in the first place) lag, and costs rise as states shed their support for state colleges and push the burden on to the students.

The $251,000 speaking fee is high, but is it out of line with other major speakers at colleges and other forums? Don’t think so. But since it’s HRC, the right thinks that this is out of line. Moreover, isn’t it the free market at work where she’s getting what the market for speaking will bear? Isn’t that what they’re always crowing about - that the market should be respected?

Guess that the market doesn’t apply to Hillary.

Pay millions of dollars to a coach of a school’s sports team and don’t say a word, but a speaking fee gets ink? Gotcha. It’s priorities - namely - Must. Stop. Hillary.

You might leave a chart lying around showing how the stock market has performed over the last several administrations, for his next visit. I think he’ll find the market has done better during Democratic administration more often than during GOP administrations.

And I partially believe that part of the reason the market contracts during GOP administrations is that they cut capital gains rates and fearmonger about Dems raising them. So people bail when they fear a change of party since the short term move *is* to bail so as to lock in gains and get them cashed out under a lower tax rate. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy thing where claiming doom and gloom is coming triggers the drop in value.

Reading this WaPo article, it seems her fees at several schools were paid from donations or fundraisers, not from the universities’ operating budgets. Ihttp://washingtonpost.com

Still, I wonder if people are making a deal about this because (a) she’s a potential presidential candidate and (b) she’s a she. Would they get as upset were the speaker, say, a white Republican man?

It’s a combination of A and B, but it’s also because other candidates aren’t or haven’t been required to indicate their speaking fees or the costs for their speaking engagements haven’t been leaked to the press.

Murrieta, CA. Established in the 1840s by a Basque who purchased Mexican land grants. Became a city in 1991 after being a backwater for decades - where most of the growth was due to commuters to big cities (thanks surburban sprawl).

Indigenous population? Hah! Those living there are nearly all immigrants to the area going back one or two generations. Only a handful have a lineage to the area stretching back 100+ years.

The big one for me in one of those tests is ragweed. Weal for that was over an inch across. (And got me a cortisone shot for my trouble.) Found out I had mold, grass pollen, grass, tree pollen, etc. allergies as well. Luckily cat dander was only a mild reaction.

Kinda late to the party, but heard about this last night. These people are absolutely disgusting. I heard on one of the shows on MSNBC that most of these people weren’t even residents of Murrieta, one person who was there said they were part of the “Minutemen” and other right wing groups and didn’t even live in the area.

I was in El Salvador for a couple weeks (as I said). I can see why people would try to send their kids here legally or otherwise. When I was there I said that it’d be great to go to Guatemala since it wasn’t that long of a drive (to see the mayan ruins). My extended family all said the same thing, no one drives there because it’s too dangerous to drive everyone flies (and it’s not cheap). It used to be we welcomed people from war torn/war ravaged countries. But I guess the only ones we welcome now are white.

BOULDER, Colo. — County clerks like Hillary Hall tend not to be bomb throwers. “We’re procedural, and we’re cautious,” she said, noting that clerks are duty-bound to follow bureaucratic rules for counting ballots, recording property deeds and registering license plates.

But last week, after a federal appeals court struck down Utah’s ban on same-sex unions, Ms. Hall decided the time had come to start issuing same-sex marriage licenses in Colorado, where they are not allowed. The move drew 97 delighted couples to the clerk’s offices, but it also put this liberal college town in the Rocky Mountain foothills on a potential collision course with the state’s Republican attorney general, John Suthers.

Personal opinion is that it’s a misguided approach. A small and relatively local attempt is probably not going to gain traction and make headway. It will be ignored elsewhere, or heavily criticized and poison the well towards the usage expanding.

You probably won’t see gender-free pronouns develop via a dedicated approach. If they creep in via slang it will be a long term development as they gradually gain acceptance - and fight against entrenched grammar that resists adopting slang. Or, and unlikely in my opinion, there is a country-wide mandate to add them enforced by a government. And that would also be widely resisted for reasons that I think most Lizards would see as obvious.

Why the fuck don’t these people get a fucking job? Am I supporting them with my tax dollars to disrupt a lawful procedure? I want to drug test every fucking one of them and whatever I find in their system they better have a script from a reputable doctor for it (no Viagra from a buddy, or Oxy from a friend)!

re: #514 Pie-onist Overlord

I think BJF is referring to a Breitbart story about volunteer officers patrolling the area around Brooks County, TX, for lost immigrants. The volunteers have rescued people who get lost in the range without food or water. But the story muddles the rescues with some argle-bargle about the sheriff’s office having to cut staff to cover the cost of burying immigrants who die out there.

Maybe one of our TX lizards can clarify the story, because the Breitbart article ain’t helping. (BTW, I am not linking to it. I found through the magic of Google. Well, actually, Bing, because China is blocking Google right now.)

Hate to say it, but the lady has a point. COB does not equal a tax break. You get tax breaks for operating in improvement districts, or by playing one state off against another, for example. But the premiums I pay are just part of the costs of labor. We never got a discount on our tax bill because we paid health insurance premiums for our employees.

A related story, from Scripps News Service. gosanangelo.com

Nothing there about the cost of burying the dead, or cutting staff, though.

Got it. Local TV station report about the sheriff’s dept facing fuel shortages, pay cuts, because the county is having to absorb the cost of burying immigrants who die out in the brush. krgv.com

So, BJF and Breitbart messed up in suggesting the sheriff’s dept has to pay for the burials. It’s the county budget that’s strapped, and everyone there is feeling the pinch. So, volunteers are going out to find people in distress before they keel over from dehydration or starvation.

Compensation and wages are a cost of business. Tax breaks for encouraging hiring and providing health benefits are not a cost of business. They reduce the cost of business. The tax breaks for providing health care benefits and other items are substantial and can reduce a corporation’s tax burden significantly (which improve’s the company’s bottom line).

You know what else is a cost of business - employees that are always sick and have to come in and get other employees sick, instead of being able to take paid time off and get well and get appropriate medical care before they cost even more to get well. Birth control fits into that as well - since pregnancies cost more towards health care costs of a self-insured company and reduce the woman’s output during and after pregnancy. Birth control would allow women to avoid pregnancy (if that’s their choice) on their terms so they can better plan on when they want to get pregnant instead of leaving it all to chance.

Is there a tax break to employers for providing employee health insurance? Are any costs of business deductible from taxes? I had assumed there was.

Does it reduce the COB if the employer provides healthcare as part of compensation, and would an employer’s taxes be different if, say, an employee’s healthcare coverage was counted as income (to the employee)? Guess what I’m asking here is the mix of healthcare/wage compensation relevant to the taxes an employer pays? Also wonder if it depends on size of employer.

The early Quakers insisted on using thee, thou and thy with everyone, even after the informal second-person forms were no longer common. Some kept the “plain speech” well into the 1800s. You can hear it in the movie The Friendly Persuasion, set in the 1860s, IIRC.

A distinction preserved in various continental languages, bien sur.

Not to mention Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, among many others. English is one of the few languages that has dispensed with informal and formal versions of the second person pronouns.

IRC Section 106 and Cafeteria Plans under IRC Section 125 are for the employees.

This is for the employers:

Small Business Health Care Credits.

For tax years 2010 through 2013, the maximum credit is 35 percent of premiums paid for small business employers and 25 percent of premiums paid for small tax-exempt employers such as charities.

For tax years beginning in 2014 or later, there are changes to the credit:

The maximum credit increases to 50 percent of premiums paid for small business employers and 35 percent of premiums paid for small tax-exempt employers.
To be eligible for the credit, a small employer must pay premiums on behalf of employees enrolled in a qualified health plan offered through a Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) Marketplace or qualify for an exception to this requirement.
The credit is available to eligible employers for two consecutive taxable years.

Here’s what this means for you. If you pay $50,000 a year toward employees’ health care premiums — and if you qualify for a 15 percent credit, you save… $7,500. If you save $7,500 a year from tax year 2010 through 2013, that’s total savings of $30,000. If, in 2014, you qualify for a slightly larger credit, say 20 percent, your savings go from $7,500 a year to $10,000 a year.

Walt Kelly’s characters in the Pogo strips always used “Miz,” for similar reasons.

“Miz” was pretty common in the south. I also have heard “Mrs” pronounced as “Mizriz” or “Misriz”.

And I always hated seeing the more common form of identifying a married woman, as in “Mrs. Howard Smith” or in announcements as Jennie (Mrs. Howard) Smith.

Talk about quaint. : )

Thee, thou and thy are archaic forms that a lord used to address the peasants. You and your were how the peasants were supposed to address the lord. As society became more egalitarian, the “peasant” forms of address were abandoned.

Interesting. Thank you!

Other Types of Business Expenses
Employees’ Pay - You can generally deduct the pay you give your employees for the services they perform for your business.
Retirement Plans - Retirement plans are savings plans that offer you tax advantages to set aside money for your own, and your employees’ retirement.
Rent Expense - Rent is any amount you pay for the use of property you do not own. In general, you can deduct rent as an expense only if the rent is for property you use in your trade or business. If you have or will receive equity in or title to the property, the rent is not deductible.
Interest - Business interest expense is an amount charged for the use of money you borrowed for business activities.
Taxes - You can deduct various federal, state, local, and foreign taxes directly attributable to your trade or business as business expenses.
Insurance - Generally, you can deduct the ordinary and necessary cost of insurance as a business expense, if it is for your trade, business, or profession.

These seem rather broad if a little vague. But I would conclude that wages and insurance costs can be deducted.

This is in addition to the small business tax credits, which business can get if they meet certain qualifications.

There were no recumbents here when I arrived 20 years ago. But as time marches on, some cyclists have been told by their doctors to go recumbent or give it up. Some could not make the transition and ended up selling their ‘bents, but others continue to crank out the miles in a new position.

We also see lots of tourists on them, including this guy on bamboo:

Were there ever legal invaders? Though I guess the Romans paying the Saxons to settle the east coast of Britain might qualify.

Yes! Let’s refuse to allow the buses to enter the Border Patrol facility so that they can be processed and returned to their country of origin!!

Leaving aside, momentarily, just the terrible nature of these people and their ability to consider undocumented migrants as sub-human, the stupidity of preventing the gov’t from processing and returning these kids/families is mind bottling….
