If the claim by the German journalists that anybody googling for info on Tor is targeted for special attention is true, it’s certainly troubling. Doctorow’s ridiculous claim, however, in no way follows from this.

I seriously doubt this is even close to being true. Think about it. How many searches for Tor happen every day? The NSA puts every single one of these people under permanent surveillance? How would that ever work in the real world?

The claim is absurd on its face.

That’s why “if”. They claim to have some code. If they publish it, then the story can be quickly debunked (or verified; but that would be more problematic - how would we know the code is real?)

Here’s the code:

daserste.ndr.de

There’s no evidence at all here that people are put on a list for “deep, permanent surveillance.” But the code does seem to be trying to identify people searching for Tor-related terms - but it also specifically excludes people in the US, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Now why would the NSA be interested in foreign sources who use software that tries to keep them anonymous? Possibly because criminals and terrorists rely on this kind of software?

It would seem from this alleged code that Tor and TAILS are handled differently. TAILS-related searches are being fingerprinted:

// START_DEFINITION
/*
These variables define terms and websites relating to the TAILs (The Amnesic
Incognito Live System) software program, a comsec mechanism advocated by
extremists on extremist forums.
*/

$TAILS_terms=word(‘tails’ or ‘Amnesiac Incognito Live System’) and word(‘linux’
or ’ USB ’ or ’ CD ’ or ‘secure desktop’ or ’ IRC ’ or ‘truecrypt’ or ’ tor ‘);
$TAILS_websites=(‘tails.boum.org’) or (‘linuxjournal.com’);
// END_DEFINITION

// START_DEFINITION
/*
This fingerprint identifies users searching for the TAILs (The Amnesic
Incognito Live System) software program, viewing documents relating to TAILs,
or viewing websites that detail TAILs.
*/
fingerprint(‘ct_mo/TAILS’)=
fingerprint(‘documents/comsec/tails_doc’) or web_search($TAILS_terms) or
url($TAILS_websites) or html_title($TAILS_websites);
// END_DEFINITION

It doesn’t seem that merely searching for Tor gets you fingerprinted, visiting the Tor Project site does:

// START_DEFINITION
/*
The fingerprint identifies sessions visiting the Tor Project website from
non-fvey countries.
*/
fingerprint(‘anonymizer/tor/torpoject_visit’)=http_host(‘torproject.org’)

The users from these countries seem to be excluded:

and not(xff_cc(‘US’ OR ‘GB’ OR ‘CA’ OR ‘AU’ OR ‘NZ’));
// END_DEFINITION

re: #46 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Applebaum claims that the code identifies linuxjournal.com as an “extremist forum,” but that’s not at all what the code says. It says:

These variables define terms and websites relating to the TAILs (The AmnesicIncognito Live System) software program, a comsec mechanism advocated by extremists on extremist forums.

And this is undoubtedly true. But at no point does this label linuxjournal.com as an extremist forum.

These kinds of distortions make my head hurt.

48 star Flag in Mendocino, put up today for the 4th of July tomorrow. I talked to the old guy who put it up. The flag is in his family from WW2; It came home with the remains of his uncle who died in a B-24 flying out of North Africa in the campaign to kick the nazis out of Italy. Let us take full advantage of the freedom in our Country by living lives of energy, optimism, enterprise and compassion, and live that way directly, and all as one. We owe such an effort to a lot of people who are no longer with us.48 star flag

I think we also owe it to the many many people who are still coming here to join us. You can’t tell everyone you’ve made the best country in the world and then not let them in.

119 jaunte  Jul 3, 2014 11:59:21am
“If this warm trend carries on into summer, we might even be able to foresee temperatures in the 20s [Celsius], and that would be really exciting from a habitability point of view,” Gómez said. “In the daytimes, we could see temperatures high enough for liquid water on a regular basis. But it’s too soon to tell whether that will happen or whether these warm temperatures are just a blip.”

While Curiosity’s days are relatively pleasant weather-wise, the same can’t be said for the rover’s nights. Air temperatures drop dramatically after the sun goes down, plunging as low as minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 70 Celsius) just before dawn, scientists said.

I think Secretary of State is a tough position to have for a future presidential run. Their job is to implement their boss’s policies not their own. Unless their boss pull of some epic strategy, Sec o’ State gets saddled with a lot of failures. That’s just the nature of diplomacy, the job comes with a lot of baggage.

I suspect the guy with the sword wasn’t using it right.

A properly balanced sword is the most versatile weapon for close quarters ever devised. Pistols and guns are all offense, no defense; close on him fast and a man with a gun can’t shoot, he has to stop you before you reach him. Close on a man carrying a blade and you’ll be spitted like a roast pigeon — unless you have a blade and can use it better than he can.
A sword never jams, never has to be reloaded, is always ready. Its worst shortcoming is that it takes great skill and patient, loving practice to gain that skill; it can’t be taught to raw recruits in weeks, nor even months.

Charles - “If you click the link, don’t blame me …”

Too late. For years, I’ve already been visiting heavily monitored sites like boingboing, linuxjournal, krebsonsecurity, schneier’s blog, grc, and (ahem) lgf.

But I think my life wreckage began when I was a known subscriber to Popular Electronics, at the time that their “personal computer” issue came out. 1978 iirc. About that time, I was also a dues paying member of a local computer interest group, and about that time, I foolishly used the US mail to order from MIT a free copy of RSA’s first major paper on Public Key Cryptography, shortly after it became available.

This was long before the powers-that-be decided to make war on the author of PrettyGoodPrivacy.

That MIT paper was taken from a wall in my apartment in 1981, on an occassion when I was served by local police with a search warrant for marijuana.

Mathematics, marijuana and terrorism. Some people still tend to get those things confused. Music too, I suppose, but you probably know that already.
