A Brief Dispatching of Politico’s “Case for Mitt Romney in 2016”

re: #1 bratwurst

“…That was also the question on not just the minds but the lips of many at a recent private gathering in Utah known as the E2 Summit, Romney’s now-annual retreat for high-profile politicians, policymakers, innovators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, top bundlers and, of course, a core group of long-time Romney loyalists. (Disclosure: I served in multiple roles in the 2012 campaign, including adviser to the economic team, television surrogate and fundraiser.) Although the subject was not on any agenda or the topic of any speech or breakout session, virtually every meal, cocktail hour and coffee break included quiet ruminations over whether Romney could successfully run again.

The event was off the record, so I need to honor those ground rules, but suffice to say that many of speakers, some of the brightest lights of the Republican Party, and with no particular allegiance to Romney, saw great merit in a Mitt resurgence.”

That business about Paul Ryan “not showing any leg” for a possible 2016 run is indicative of a certain gossipy mindset.

From downstairs, reposted here:

re: #123 SteveMcGazi

Pi is computed to thousands (maybe nearly 100,000) digits. Some people pride themselves on memorizing pi to hundreds of digits. But the chairman told me that pi is the ratio between the diameter and the circumference of a circle. But I know this can’t be true because pi is a non repeating, non-terminating decimal. It is a irrational number (It can’t be reasoned with…). To measure pi to thousands of digits in that case would mean that you measured the diameter AND the circumeference of a circle to thousand upon thousands of digits, and nothing is that precise. Therefore, pi must be something else. There has to be some basis to calculate it to all those decimal places, but the professor was to lazy to explain.

You’re right about the precision of directly measuring the diameter and circumference of a circle. The ancient Greeks understood the problem as well. Being clever at geometry, they decided to approximate a circle with polygons of ever increasing sides — 6, 8, 10, etc. — to calculate a more precise value of π. As you increase the number of sides, the perimeter of the polygon approaches the circumference of a circle. Of course, you can just keep adding sides to get closer and closer to the circumference, and thereby, to a more precise value of π.

In more modern terms, this process is an infinite series that converges on the value of π. There are other ways to calculate the value, as well, but this one is based on the geometry of the circle.

The irrational nature of π has been understood for 3,000 years at least. Maybe it’s time you caught up.

You’ve left a good explanation there, but that’s my point - it shouldn’t have been necessary. In the age of google and wiki it’s bad enough to be so lazy as not to research, but the “But I know this can’t be true because” bit killed me.

I’m a teacher. it’s a reflex action I can’t control. But yeah, I agree that Steve McGhazi just provided us a perfect example of intellectual laziness. Note how he blames the professor for being lazy and not explaining it. Steve could have just raised his hand and asked for further explanation, or asked someone else. But instead he’d rather flaunt his ignorance.

There are some Biblical literalists who in fact claim that pi = 3, because they claim it says so in the OT somewhere.

Concrete learners have trouble with abstractions like infinity and unknown quantities. It’s one reason why some kids hit a brick wall when they take algebra. Their minds have not yet developed abstract thinking skills. You might as well be talking to them in ancient Hittite for all the good it will do. And if a student gets foiled by algebra, pre-calculus and calculus are beyond their grasp. Infinite series — wut?

I’ve taught math. There are ways to surmount the concrete learning wall, but it takes time, patience and the right materials. If you can address the concrete learning portion of their minds to show them how the abstraction is valid, you can get students through algebra successfully. It’s slow going for some kids.

Sadly, there are many adults whose abstract thinking skills never “turned on,” at least in terms of math and science. I can well imagine that most of the science denialists around today were abject failures in algebra and science.

Abstraction barriers also pop up among math and science wizards. I had a student who was brilliant at STEM subjects, but was completely befuddled by literary analysis, especially metaphor, imagery and connotation. For him, there were only words and no “hidden meanings.”

According to the lot, therefore, India fell unto Judas Thomas, which is also the twin: but he would not go, saying that by reason of the weakness of the flesh he could not travel, and ‘I am an Hebrew man; how can I go amongst the Indians and preach the truth?’

[…]

And while he thus spake and thought, it chanced that there was there a certain merchant come from India whose name was Abbanes, sent from the King Gundaphorus, and having commandment from him to buy a carpenter and bring him unto him.

Now the Lord seeing him walking in the market-place at noon said unto him: Wouldest thou buy a carpenter? And he said to him: Yea. And the Lord said to him: I have a slave that is a carpenter and I desire to sell him. And so saying he showed him Thomas afar off, and agreed with him for three litrae of silver unstamped, and wrote a deed of sale, saying: I, Jesus, the son of Joseph the carpenter, acknowledge that I have sold my slave, Judas by name, unto thee Abbanes, a merchant of Gundaphorus, king of the Indians. And when the deed was finished, the Saviour took Judas Thomas and led him away to Abbanes the merchant, and when Abbanes saw him he said unto him: Is this thy master? And the apostle said: Yea, he is my Lord. And he said: I have bought thee of him. And thy apostle held his peace.

Boris Karloff in “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” (1952) and Sean Connery in “MacBeth” (1961), for instance. Those 2 ought to be interesting. : )

There are 3 levels of understanding:
(a) Those who need to perceive with their senses
(b) Those who can deduce from what they perceive with the senses.
(c) Those who just inherently understand things that cannot be perceived thru the senses.

I think each of us understand the world thru a combination of the above. It may vary at different times of our lives because of development and experience.

71 Dr Lizardo  Jul 4, 2014 4:24:20am

So, I was reading the Frankfurter Allgemeine and there’s a big problem with crystal meth growing in Germany.

Unfortunately, the problem stems from the Czech Republic, which has come to be known as “Europe’s meth kitchen” according to one German official in another article on the same subject. The ingredients to make meth are easily obtained in Poland, then shipped here and manufactured into product and from there, they go into Germany.

So in addition to being known as “Europe’s bordello” (another dubious distinction) we’re now being recognized as a major meth-manufacturing point as well.

Here’s the article in the original German from the Frankfurter Allgemeine; you can run it through GoogleTranslate.

faz.net

The FA article notes, correctly, that the Czech Republic has very lax drug-possession laws. You can possess two grams of weed here and it’s considered nothing more than a trivial offense. Unfortunately, you can also possess up to two grams of meth (it’s called Pervitin here, the old trade name for methamphetamine) and face an $800 fine and pretty much no jail time whatsoever. They were supposed to change that, and lower the amount for meth to half a gram, but I don’t know if the Czech government has ever gotten around to that. You can see people openly smoking weed here; that’s not a problem. I’ve seen people doing so while walking down the street.

I never had a problem with the abstract thinking part. I just never gave a damn about the value of ‘x’.

I received my first “C”, breaking my straight A scholastic record, in 9th grade algebra. My teacher kept a flask in his desk (everyone knew he drank) and allowed the class to run wild; his desk was behind us and I don’t remember him ever being upright at the front—he was always at his desk and taught us nothing, always referring us to the book—there was never any discussion, nothing. Meanwhile, being only 1 of 2 girls, I was tortured by the boys who kept making sexual innuendos about my “pussy” (I was a very “innocent” 14). The atmosphere was deadly. I said to myself in effect, fuck it, if these are going to be the kind of people I’m around having to learn this shit, forget about it. Then I took business math in 10th, which was a lot better in atmosphere with more girls than boys. I think learning arithmetic helped me far more in many ways, including in accounting class and keeping a job once out of school. Yes, strecken in this context is to dilute. I suppose to help the stuff absorb into bloodstream, but surely he makes his lungs kaputt this way before long? Very weird.

Yeah, I can’t even begin to imagine the medium to long-term consequences of doing that. Meth is one of those things I’ve never had so much as one iota of curiosity about trying, so I have to admit, I don’t know.

Greets and saluts on this July 4th - Independence Day. Folks in my area are mostly cleaning up after the storms that came through yesterday, though it was hit and miss with the winds and flooding. Since it’s not raining here, it means the local towns will be able to go on with their parades and some will be able to hold their fireworks as planned.

Most of the NYC metro area is dry at the moment - between a band of rain and storms from the front that helped set off the storms last night, and bands of rain coming up from Arthur. We wont see the wind and severe weather from that storm up here, but the same can’t be said of the folks down in NC, who are dealing with Arthur’s landfall.

They’re dealing with storm surges, power outages, and other assorted damage.

Yeah, that’s a weird one. I thought at first it meant….”he spreads it out on a glass”, like with cocaine, but then I read that sentence again, and I guess he’s mixing in fine glass particles with the meth.

Weird. Maybe it’s a “German thing”.

Meth and cocaine are “clean”, you can use them discretely at work, and you can keep up with the ridiculous 60 to 70-hour weeks that a lot of modern careers demand…at least over the short term.

Looks like it took less than a week for Ginsberg’s dissent to be prescient and show that the Hobby Lobby ruling has legs and reach far beyond the so-called limited ruling that the majority and the right wing claimed.

None of this should be surprising, but it also shows that the right wing simply doesn’t consider birth control to be necessary/useful, and are doing all they can to roll it back, even though it is something all women can potentially find useful at some point in their lives.

“Then Marco lifts the face and you startled. The eyes big as golf balls, the skin greasy and shiny, the hair tangled in the forehead. The look dull. But his sentences are sharp as an ax. “You have no idea what is fun before you have not even taken it. How clear can be the world. How strong you are. Only then does it all make sense. “Marco hurts, even his friends, parents, with every line he draws through the nose. Crystal meth - the drug is Marcos friend, enemy, Muse and executioner. Before he snorts the powder through a bill, he stretches it with fine glass particles, then rips the nasal septum and the fabric goes faster into the blood. It is as a thousand wasps crawling on his neck in the head, collected since and exploded like a bomb. Feels so the sky or hell? Marco can not say it. All he knows is that he needs this feeling, now more frequent and more violent.”

It’s a TRAP. That’s their latest angle on trying to make abortion illegal. Throw up enough roadblocks and restrictions on where/how a clinic can operate, and they figure that clinics and doctors will close up shop.

That’s even though plastic surgery centers have a higher rate of complications and deaths to patients than the abortion clinics do, but the anti-abortion groups don’t consider the women to be the important thing - it’s all about making sure that these women carry the fetus to term. What happens after doesn’t matter (and for which these women get no support or guidance from them).

I asked this downstairs, but I’ll ask again here since it probably got lost in the shuffle — how does the Hobby Lobby ruling not shred the corporate veil? From what I can tell, not only did SCOTUS rule that a corporation is a person with religious rights, but that corporate person is a direct stand-in for the owners, since it now acts in their personal religious interests.

If the corporation and the owners of the corporation are the same for the purposes of religious objections, couldn’t they be seen as the same in other cases?

“Clean” in the sense that they do not smell like marijuana or alcohol at the workplace.

My ex-colleagues would get in about 4pm, then work all night, my job was to be there to answer the phone in the mornings. For a while I thought it fun to be able to scrape up enough residual dust from the plates they left lying about to get a buzz together.

Then I came in one morning, they had been up working on a project all night, had burned it on a CD, the courier was waiting to pick it up…but the office and all the surfaces were such a jumble of opened files and discarded pizza boxes that they could not find the CD they had been working on all night. That was the point that I gave up working there…

I never had a problem with the abstract thinking part. I just never gave a damn about the value of ‘x’.

If math teachers could present the problem as a kind of puzzle to solve, then lessons would go much easier. The trouble is, most math texts (and math teachers) act as if Math is some kind of Holy Writ that must be appreciated in and of itself. They suck all the possible fun out of it until a lot of students say, “Fuck it! Who cares what bloody x is?”

It’s a heretical idea among mathematicians, but math is a tool. At least, that’s what physicists believe, and that’s how I approached my teaching of algebra. Math has practical uses. Learning how to use the tool helps you understand how the tool works. Or at least, it would help.

From what I gather, the Common Core math curriculum is more practice- based and tries to engage students’ imagination and curiosity. We’ll see if it makes any difference in the long run.

When we bought our house 17 yrs ago there was a meth lab next door. Of course we didn’t know that til later, but those confrontations with that mess were, um, an education. It was more sad than anything, especially for the little kid living in that house. In talking with the DEA people who eventually showed up here to let us know WTF was happening when they raided the place and carried out evidence, meth hits all the pleasure and addiction centers in the brain. For some people just trying it once can be enough to send them into addiction.

I live in a nice part of suburban Atlanta, you’d never have guessed in a million years that meth would be right next door. I ended up talking with family members of one of the young women who lived there (two couples, one with a kid about 8 yrs old) and she had been an honor student, going off to college with a promising future. The young woman I met looked 10 yrs older than her actual age, sores on her face, convinced her boyfriend was literally some kind of prophet or something. I hope all those people found help, especially that little boy.

Meth is coming into China, especially in Guangdong province where there are many migrant workers and lots of international traffic. China has not a big drug problem since the days of the Opium Wars, but meth looks to be opium’s successor.

I suspect this ruling will create many more problems than it supposedly solved, as everyone with an axe to grind will look for loopholes to wiggle through. The majority on the Court may live to regret the Pandora’s box they’ve opened up. It would have been much better to have told Hobby Lobby to shut the hell up and pay the fines, if the owners are that dedicated to their religious beliefs. Instead, the Court has set itself up as a kind of arbiter in religious affairs. Big big mistake.

I remember seeing a documentary awhile ago about meth and there was a part of it about Quaaludes and how we were able to stem that problem back in the 80s. The main ingredient in Quaaludes stopped being manufactured, the pills disappeared. I’m simplifying this of course, but if ephedra was no longer produced by the pharmaceutical industry, we’d have no meth. I think there are only one or two factories in the world that produce ephedra, but the main problem is consumers want it for decongestant purposes and so money trumps public health.

What it does to people is horrifying, it’s truly just an awful thing.

This was me about calculus in high school…it made no sense at all, and it didn’t help that the math teacher just handed us the textbook and never explained a thing.
Fast forward more than 10 year when I took an applied calculus for business class. It suddenly made complete sense! I could look at a graph and actually SEE the information. I was asked to be a tutor but I couldn’t do it because I couldn’t explain how it worked. I could just see that it did. Apparently my brain makes a leap from the formulas straight to the end results.

Here in Ostrava, there was a boarding house that got shut down by the cops after one of the tenants decided to turn his room into a makeshift meth lab.

The place was so poorly run that even though people complained about the horrifying stench coming from one of the rooms, the owner did exactly nothing about it. Didn’t come around to see what’s up, didn’t do a damned thing. Finally the cops got wind of it when the boarders complained to them. The place is now condemned, but the city found the other boarders a better place to live.

The owner of the building was heavily fined, and in addition, has to pay all the costs of demolition and hazmat cleanup. The authorities decided to make an example of him.

I used to have to use pseudoephedrine products like Sudafed when I lived in Charlotte for allergies. They didn’t make me high, but they sure did dry up the old nasal passages. I only had to take them once a day and they were very effective. Now, I can’t take anything with that ingredient in it due to hbp, so I just have to suffer w/it for the most part (it’s been rough this year w/lots of sneezing and nose blowing). I just don’t take anything now, because it makes me drowzy (drowzier in some instances) when I need to be alert.

Yeah, it’s hard for many to see the parallels, but the logic and organization required for a geometry proof have broader applications in other fields. Your geometry teacher was a rare breed to encourage that kind of thinking.

Most of the time here they just want to give you Claritin, which I’ve tried and doesn’t work well for me. It also comes w/pseudoephedrine, so there are 2 formulas. Stahist contains pseudoephedrine.

HD and Lowes are both open today. Costco is closed.

As for replacing the handle, you can use a vice grip pliers for the immediate usage until you get a replacement faucet installed. If the valve stem is still intact (the part the handle goes on), then this should be a relatively quick fix since the parts are pretty much standardized. If the valve stem is broken/damaged, then you could either replace the valve stem and handle, or replace the entire faucet (which is costlier, but may work out better in the end of trying to find exact matching parts).

Overcast and some wind in Philly. Thunderstorms came through last night again and it is somewhat cooler.

So too is a reciprocating saw. If you’re going to remove/replace the faucet, it’s quicker and easier to saw it off than try to unscrew it from underneath. I’ve tried using the basin wrench to undo two different faucets, wasted 45 minutes trying to undo them because they were rusted tight, and then took all of 3 minutes to saw them off.

That plus the reciprocating saw is good for clearing brush/sawing it down to size, and other similar repairs.

Ah yes, vise-grips work great in an emergency. Replacing the faucet would take up half the day if you’ve never done it before.

Meanwhile, I just put on a Yankee Pot Roast so my grandson could have a good meal before he goes to work. Just a small 2-1/2 lb chuck roast I got for half price last month that’s been in the freezer, and using fresh thyme and bay leaf plus Vidalia onions. It’s in my cast iron Dutch oven on top of the stove so it won’t heat up the house. Will add carrots and small white potatoes later and make gravy. Figured this was a pretty All-American dinner, eh?

Sounds like my dinner last night. Add in the garlic green beans and I’m in for it again. No leftovers for me from last night, the 14 yo boy liked it too. Will just have to grill some steaks today I guess. First world problems.

Interesting article. Move the flight-deck aft. If you’re using monitors, what difference will its location make. Hell, remove it altogether. Just make 787s and 380s big drones. Then you only have to hire a handful of “pilots” to handle take off and landing and set them on their course.

Ah, once again the F-35 shows that it’s a hangar queen. Entire F-35 fleet grounded over engine problems. Again.

All because of an engine fire on takeoff of a F-35A (base variant). Until investigators can figure out why the fire happened, the entire fleet is grounded.

The Soviets went broke trying to keep with us, and now we’re going broke trying to beat an enemy that doesn’t exist.

re: #3 EPR-radar

That business about Paul Ryan “not showing any leg” for a possible 2016 run is indicative of a certain gossipy mindset.

Agreed. Although I don’t think Paul Ryan is actually thinking of such a run. His need to cut deals with the Dems as head of the House Budget Committee limits his “purity” too much for many within the GOP.

Some those who would oppose Paul Ryan for deal making simply hate the Democrats and want no deals with them, and to blazes with the consequences. Such people comprise the more severe type of wingnut.

Less severe, but still in some cases wingnutty are those who harbor an inherent suspicion of Washington DC dealmakers. Such suspicions are not without foundation, though those of this group have good deal of trouble seeing the necessity of dealmaking in order to accomplish necessary functions of the Congress.

Lastly, and least problematic, are those like my best friend and I, who understand and appreciate the role of DC dealmakers but feel such people should not be the Republican Party’s standard bearer. I admire and respect Paul Ryan, but someone who has to cut deals with the Dems would divide and dispirit the party as its nominee. Moreover, in the top slot someone like that would have a hard time projecting a “No Retreat!” attitude when such an attitude is called for.

re: #255 Dark_Falcon

Though to be fair, Lehi was forcibly disarmed and disbanded for killing Bernadotte.

Interesting factoid: Count Folke Bernadotte was the direct descendant of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoleon’s marshals. He was made King of Sweden as way to reward him while removing him from the French Army, as Napoleon though him lacking the initiative a Marshal of France needed, this being made clear in Napoleon’s eyes by Marshal Bernadotte’s following previous orders and marching his corps down a road in 1806. It should have been clear to Bernadotte that both Napoleon’s main body and Marshal Louis Davout’s III Corps were engaged with the Prussians, yet Bernadotte moved to aid neither force. France won the twin battles of Jena-Aurerstadt, but Napoleon never forgot Bernadotte’s failure to think.

It might have been suicide by stupid remark. They’ve been talking about leaving XM for years. They’ve left previous jobs with the same tactic of blowing up (and getting publicity) and getting themselves fired to pursue other opportunities. I’ve listened to them every day for a very long time. The corporate environment at XM just isn’t conclusive to good talk radio. the business model was to hire big name celebrities (Martha Stewart, Eminem, etc) to put their name on a channel with no investment in on air talent. The celebrities just collected a huge fee to use their names with no involvement or even air time on the channel.XM just doen’t invest in on air talent or content for their talk stations.

Scully always looks scared. I hope he had a word with the screeners later, but I doubt it. He slants to the right himself, from what I’ve read.

It’s pretty obvious, from my own discussions with white guys, that they feel inferior to the white ruling class—why can’t I be rich, I’m white?—you know that attitude and they never, ever consider the class they’re relegated to. They think deep down that white people, no matter who they are, deserve a better break than any other race and believe all the stereotypes they hear from RW politicians and radio jocks. They’re the ones who would never accept a Black boss or superior at work or (or an Hispanic, for that matter), if they were forced to do so, would not hide their resentment very easily. I know too many who think they should get ahead with very little education and only with connections because their daddy did it with an 8th grade education. If that’s not white privilege, I don’t know what is.

An article from yesterday (before the firing)

‘Opie and Anthony’ shock jock Anthony Cumia’s sad, racist double standards

There is, of course, every reason to be skeptical. Cumia makes a living setting up pranks and saying outrageous things, and after 20 years of doing so, it would be foolhardy for listeners, whether skeptics or enthusiastic fans, not to be looking out for the setup to some punchline.

The pictures Cumia tweeted do not exactly support his account, either, unless he is in the habit of taking pictures of scaffolding on nondescript city streets. The photo he describes as the inciting incident shows a woman who is already agitated, not caught by surprise, which might suggest some prior provocation.

And as upset as Cumia claims to be, he did not take the next logical step and call in the alleged incident. A New York Police Department spokesman checked for me and said no Anthony Cumia had filed a report for a Tuesday altercation.

But whether or not Cumia was assaulted is not actually the point. Cumia himself made sure of that when he took to Twitter in the small hours on Wednesday morning to pontificate on the state of New York and African Americans in a rant amply documented by Gawker. (Both the Gawker post and links to Cumia’s tweets that appear later in this piece contain wildly obscene and offensive language.) It is a fascinating document of a kind of thinking about crime that plays an increasing role in our policy debates and of the sensitivities of people who think they have an exclusive monopoly on the right to transgress. (Update: Per Cumia’s Twitter, he has been let go from Sirius.)

This ain’t no stunt. Dude’s a straight up racist dickhead. I was talking to my radio friend and he said it’s been an open secret for years just how racist and fucked up everyone involved with that show is.

And Cumia’s brother is one of my Facebook wingnuts. HE went off on FB yesterday demanding every immigrant be arrested and deported immediately.

So it runs in the family, too. Publicity stunt, my ass. He’s a fucking racist, and people should drop the rationalizations and recognize that fact.

Let me tell you one more thing I know about New York Italians.

Only way KT would be happier is if he’d hurt a young woman at the same time.

Maybe their next stunt is to see if they can be obnoxious enough to get pepper sprayed.

re: #321 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

It also doesn’t matter if it was a ‘stunt’ or not. It doesn’t matter if someone’s racism is sincere or just a calculated thing to appeal to people like Killgore. It’s still racism, and it still has all the negative effects of racism.

Now wait just a minute…you mean to say that the ends of him getting out of his contract don’t justify the means of him saying African-Americans aren’t people and calling them violent savages and animals?!?!

This is a case where intent is pretty much irrelevant. The act speaks for itself.

Or “booger”.

Howdy Lizards, happy 4th! I decided to not post anything political on FB or the Twitters today in the hope of avoiding any divisive encounters with my RWNJ friends. Call me naive, but I still think that there’s more that unites us than divides us and on today, I won’t test that theory. Thanks for being a source or moral and intellectual enrichment day in and day out! E pluribus unum!

Probably waiting to show his expertise on hurricanes, should anyone mention anything sciency…

For those of us with chronic sinus problems and year-long allergies, the pseudophed substitutes just don’t work.

I’m very happy to present my driver’s license and sign every month to get a med that allowed me to breathe thru my nose.

I notice, tho, that for my son, the OTC stuff works just fine. So, hopefully, it has something to do with my age and long time usage of such meds.

They don’t seem to care that pregnancy in and of itself is life threatening. Of course, their women, have access to great healthcare. Poor women don’t count.

I won’t go into the health consequences of repeated, closely spaced pregnancies. Pregnancies of women too young to carry and deliver and older women.

Germany arrests suspected double agent spying for U.S.: lawmakers

The man, who is German, has admitted passing to an American contact details about a special German parliamentary committee set up to investigate the spying revelations made by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, the politicians said.

Both lawmakers are members of the nine-person parliamentary control committee, whose meetings are confidential, and which is in charge of monitoring the work of German intelligence agencies.

The parliamentary committee investigating the NSA affair also holds some confidential meetings.

Actually it’s eπ⋅i=-1, but I accept your version as a practical approximation.

Actually, I believe it is ” [e to the (i x pi )] -1 = 0”, so you have the sign wrong. Sorry, I am not sure how to type exponents like all you fancy pants!

I think a lot of that is part of my problem with math. There are things I seem to inherently know, but can’t explain in math vocabulary words. Anything I don’t need or think is interesting I don’t care to know about.

My foodie friend says she uses algebra when converting recipes. I just wing it. What I cooks turns out just fine.

The science and math part of my brain is expressed thru art. It’s bent a little.

I try to keep 4th of July related conversation with those relatives limited to our common relatives who were war heroes in WWII. Seems appropriate, and it’s safe middle ground.

I know it works well, I used to take it sometimes when I first moved to GA and the pine pollen was just astonishing. There had been talk at one point of making it a prescription only medication, but the drug companies and consumers pretty much shouted that down. You’d think with all our technology we could find alternatives that couldn’t be used for other things.

A side thought too:
For a country that’s supposed to be so super shiny and awesome all the time 24/7/365, we seem to have a large number of very unhappy people on a large amount of all kinds of drugs. Maybe things aren’t so super after all?

You just now figuring that out?

:0

Actually, alcohol has been the drug of choice from the beginning.

Most of the time here they just want to give you Claritin, which I’ve tried and doesn’t work well for me. It also comes w/pseudoephedrine, so there are 2 formulas. Stahist contains pseudoephedrine.

They also want to give nasal sprays which play havoc with my membranes. I’ll stick with my old fashioned anti-histimines and mucinex-D AND MY NETI POT!!!

WEll, one could always borrow a faucet from a little used bathroom (or a neighbor if they aren’t looking).

And for all that conservatives rail against immigration———especially from Mexico and further south——-don’t they realize that it is fueled by the explosive growth of population that outpaces their economy’s ability to grow? Fighting family planning outreach south of the border adds to the calamitous conditions that make people pick up and move here.

Neighbors across the back fence are blasting awful auto-tune country for their tweener daughter’s pool party. I just cain’t get away from country music.
