A Great Tiny Desk Concert by Fountains of Wayne

Maybe one day soon it will all come out

I just discovered this wonderful live performance by one of my very favorite bands, Fountains of Wayne, on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert show in 2011. They often get put in the “power pop” pigeonhole, but there’s real emotional depth to their lyrics and music.

It speaks well of this performance that Fountains of Wayne’s set pokes around in a few gray areas; its four songs showcase a band with tremendous narrative gifts and a real flair for subtle beauty.

Set List:
“The Summer Place”
“Valley Winter Song”
“A Dip In The Ocean”
“Troubled Times”

Troubled Times

When you think you’ve found something
Worth holding on to
Were you reaching for attention
Hoping she would notice you?

Collecting bottles and thrown away cans
Like she was returnable
One day would refill your hands
How she loved you, all you imagined
Fit so well into your plan

Maybe one day soon it will all come out
How you dream about each other sometimes
With the memory of how you once gave up
But you made it through the troubled times

Pining away every hour in your room
Rolling with the motion, waiting ‘til it’s opportune
Sitting there watching time fly past you
Why do tomorrow, what you could never do

How she loved you, all you imagined
All the shit you put her through

Maybe one day soon it will all come out
How you dream about each other sometimes
With the memory of how you once gave up
But you made it through the troubled times

It takes a lot of nerve to ask how she is doing
Start with a weak foundation, you will end in ruins
The way the days and hours pass you’ll never understand
Falling like rain through your hands

Maybe one day soon it will all come out
How you dream about each other sometimes
With the memory of how you once gave up
But you made it through the troubled times

Maybe one day soon it will all come out
How you dream about each other sometimes
With the memory of how you once gave up
But you made it through the troubled times

Funny how a Dem could be the principal sponsor of the Wm. Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act and get a bipartisan co-sponsorship and have it signed by a Republican President.

Less than 6 yrs ago. It was introduced Dec 9 and signed 14 days later by Pres Bush. Pretty fast work.

Went diving today, my first time NOT diving in the comfortable confines of a class, with an instructor watching over me. Hooked up with a guy on Facebook from a forum, met at the scuba park and dove. The fact that I’m posting means that it went well, and I have been invited to dive with him and his friends any time. :)

Here’s some pic, the first one is from the entrance to the quarry, and the second is me all kitted out. The big white thing on my shoulder is a writing slate and tablet, the thing on my wrist is a dive computer that tells me how deep I am, time I can stay down without getting into trouble, water temp, it’s my new best friend. The thing down at my hip tells me how much air is left in the tank, and also has a second depth gauge on the back side.

I’m wearing 5mm of Neoprene from head to toe, was plenty warm except when we went down below 60 feet, then the temp dropped to about 45* and it was chilly. Had a great day, validated my limited skills, and showed myself that I can do this without too much adult supervision.

It’s believed that parents from Central America send their children north hoping they will be granted asylum under the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. This misconception can also be traced to a 2008 law signed by President George W. Bush that gave special consideration to minors fleeing violence in Central America.
— USA Today

49 Gus  Jul 4, 2014 6:31:24pm

Policy makers on all sides were focusing increasingly on a mesh of laws mandating special treatment of unaccompanied migrant children, most of which were passed under President George W. Bush.

Under an anti-trafficking statute adopted — with bipartisan support — in 2008, minors caught traveling without their parents, if they are not from Mexico, cannot be rapidly deported. Youths from Central America must be transferred within 72 hours from the Border Patrol to the Department of Health and Human Services, which detains them in shelters and works to release them to parents or other responsible adults in the United States.

“Who’s going to pay for them?” he asked. “What kind of criminality will happen?”
[…]
“The Democrats are making it easy for them to come here so they can produce more Democratic voters,” he said

and then you blocked my bus until it was turned around and sent to a different baby jail, because we don’t want yer kind in Murrietta, and NOBAMA better stop luring disease-ridden children to our glorious land with a promise of super-cush prison cells before they are deported.

Time to admit a mistake was made, cut the F35 project and reopen the F-16 & A-10 production lines. Even from scratch that would cost less than this porktastic boondoggle.

The Pentagon has grounded all of its F-35s while it investigates the cause of a fire last month involving one of the jets.

In a statement late Thursday, the Defense Department said the decision was made based on initial findings from a runway fire incident June 23 at the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. No one was hurt.

“The root cause of the incident remains under investigation,” the statement said. “Additional inspections of F-35 engines have been ordered, and return to flight will be determined based on inspection results and analysis of engineering data.”

The Spanish and, later, Mexican governments encouraged settlement of territory now known as California by the establishment of large land grants called ranchos, from which the English word ranch is derived. Land-grant titles (concessions) were government-issued, permanent, unencumbered property-ownership rights to land called ranchos. Devoted to raising cattle and sheep, the owners of the ranchos attempted to pattern themselves after the landed gentry of Spain. Their workers included Californian Native Americans who had learned to speak Spanish, many of them former Mission residents. Of the 800-plus grants, Spain made about 30 between 1784 and 1821. The remainder were granted by Mexico between 1833 and 1846. The ranchos established land-use patterns that are recognizable in the California of today. Rancho boundaries became the basis for California’s land survey system, and can still be found on modern maps and land titles. Ranchos were partially based on geography, such as access to river water. Land development in the 20th and 21st century often follow the boundaries of the ranchos, and often retain the original name. For example, “Rancho San Diego,” an unincorporated ‘rural-burb’ east of San Diego, or “Rancho Bernardo,”, a masterplan suburb in the city of San Diego.

From the Boston Globe:

Gordon College leader joins request for exemption to hiring rule

The president of a small Christian college north of Boston was among 14 religious leaders who sent a letter to the White House this week requesting a religious exemption to a planned order barring federal contractors from discriminating in hiring on the basis of sexual orientation.

“Without a robust religious exemption … this expansion of hiring rights will come at an unreasonable cost to the common good, national unity and religious freedom,” reads the letter, signed by Gordon College president D. Michael Lindsay as well as the chief executive of Catholic Charities USA, the executive editor of Christianity Today, prominent evangelical pastor Rick Warren, and other Christian leaders.

It’s not about tolerance. It’s about making people second-class citizens.

And the President may have been reaching out when he asked Rick Warren to give the invocation at his first inaugural, but there are some people you just do not reach out to.

Has anyone ever tried to do a study on the coarseness of political dialogue and the lessening of civility since FOX News hit the airwaves in late ‘96. Also how much they have helped make some of their viewers ignorant of some basic civics and politics?

I know that people have always liked to say you can’t discuss religion and politics. Seems as if FOX News and then others like them have decided to give voice to those that maybe really shouldn’t discuss anything.

That bit above about the British asking not to have their media give voice to climate deniers sort of fits into what I am getting at. If you didn’t have so much sludge pouring out of the nutty media to push agendas, the people that fall for it would have to at the very least hide their ignorance. Now they are out in the open and talking nonsense because they are fed it and take it as fact.

The food is delicious, service is excellent. Highly recommended, if you’re going to be within 25 miles for some other reason (on the way to Big Bear? Or going to Ontario Raceway or the Pomona Fairgrounds…)

1. MYTH: This is amnesty.

FACT: Amnesty is the forgiveness of an offense without penalty. This proposal is not amnesty because illegal workers must acknowledge that they broke the law, pay a $1,000 fine, and undergo criminal background checks to obtain a Z visa granting temporary legal status.

“My father gave his life, making this country what it is. Murdered by the British with all of his men on the twenty fifth of July, anno domini, 1814. Do you think I’m going to help you befoul his legacy, by giving this country over to them, what’s had no hand in the fighting for it? The first time I saw “Gangs of New York,” I mostly paid attention to Scorcese’s hommages to the great Sergio Leone. The second time I saw it, I thought, “Jesus, Marty, this is some hardcore historical shit.” Only a kid who grew up on Elizabeth Street would’ve made that flick, and had the gall to actually make it, and in suburban Rome’s dilapidated Cinecitta studios no less.

Though the dates of the events depicted are condensed for dramatic purposes, it still packs a wallop.

I live just a few blocks from the old Five Points. To say the least, the neigb is a bit cleaner nowadays.

re: #133 Gus

The flag is obviously torn, and the torn bit folded under. The portion next to the toe of that shoe in the photo is raised off the ground. The low edge of the tear (“burn”) not only doesn’t have discoloration or warping such as you’d find when you burn plastic, you can actually see the folded edge.

This has gone so far into the realm of hateful propaganda that it’s scary.

There is no such thing as peak wingnut, there’s only the point where they act out the revenge fantasy inherent in all their assertions about their hated, un-American enemies.

Hard to snark about that.

Speaking of DC comics and xenophobia, Curt Swan’s 1960’s drawings of Superman make him look suspiciously Italian. The one constant refrain from her was that she had to keep fighting to control her anger at the protesters so that she could appear objective and get close enough to take photos. She wanted to punch some of them in the face, especially the way they were aiming their hate at kids. She was outraged at the whole display. Even people on her list who called themselves conservatives were ashamed of the protesters.

A friend of mine from grad school works for the Los Angeles Times and went out to Murrieta for these protests. She posted some photos to her FB page.

The RWNJs are playing with fire here. I don’t think they realize just how toxic the rabble in Murrieta are for people. It’s reminding a lot of people of the attacks that blacks faced during the Civil Rights era. People are stunned that this level of hate still exists.

I sometimes think we’re headed for another Civil War. The election of a black Democratic president has sent really sent the conservative element in the country over the edge.

The problem is it won’t be neatly divided in geographic regions. I live in allegedly liberal NJ, and I know of at least two households hearing flying their Gasden/Don’t Tread on Me/I’m a Clueless Political Moron warning flags.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s pretty much a signal that the people in those households understand the Constitution the way a worm understands particle physics.

Look what caucuses under the conservative banner these days:

• The drooling pack of racist mouth breathers as seen in Murietta
• The paranoid loons of Bundy Ranch
• Weak kneed “rational” cowards like Boehner who kiss the radicals’ asses in order to maintain power
• The spineless “Gosh, whaddya gonna do” cowards who keep electing the Tea Baggers into Congress, while concern trolling over how upset they are about the GOP

We can’t keep going like this. Republicans have basically stopped pretending they care about the running the country , and are pretty upfront about making Obama’s downfall their only job.

If the average American “independent” voter had any fucking brains, they’d stop voting Republican for however long it takes for these idiots to come back to reality.

Happy 4th of July. Whee.

BBC journalists are being sent on courses to stop them inviting so many cranks onto programmes to air ‘marginal views’

The BBC Trust on Thursday published a progress report into the corporation’s science coverage which was criticised in 2012 for giving too much air-time to critics who oppose non-contentious issues.

The report found that there was still an ‘over-rigid application of editorial guidelines on impartiality’ which sought to give the ‘other side’ of the argument, even if that viewpoint was widely dismissed.

Some 200 staff have already attended seminars and workshops and more will be invited on courses in the coming months to stop them giving ‘undue attention to marginal opinion.’ […]

302 Ryan King  Jul 5, 2014 9:58:46am

D’Souza was on every talk show program in my market over the last 3 days. Basically:

Liberalism is evil and the cause for every bad thing
Socialism/liberalism has done more to damage to the black family than slavery

Yes, he literally said those things in a few different ways.

The most laughable one is that liberals exploit black folk to gain their support even though liberals really don’t care about black folk. Which shows his contempt for black folk because he thinks they are too stupid to know they are being exploited by the liberals and act in their own self interest.

He’s an ideological snake oil huckster out to make a buck.

“…after 78 minutes of defending America’s involvement in Vietnam and suggesting that colonialism only fails when it doesn’t last for long enough, D’Souza finally gets to the point of this empty-headed money grab: Hillary Clinton is the Antichrist. Connecting the politician to community organizer Saul Alinsky via a very convincing series of lines, D’Souza argues that Clinton intends to radicalize the White House and that her big government vision is to use the NSA to transform America into a giant panopticon. Other than the suggestion that Clinton is responsible for the death of Aaron Schwartz, D’Souza’s accusations are nearly identical to those he’s previously leveled at Obama, further weakening the integrity of his claims.”

For the record I’m in strong favor of a path to citizenship. And driving the physical paths of illegal entry out into deadly desert and private border ranches has proven to be the completely wrong answer.

‘Cartel violence’ is too vague of a term to base immigration policy on. The immigrants prominent in the news right now are coming from Central America, not Mexico. Yes, the Mexican cartels reach into those countries, but the violence comes even more from their own army and police, which by the way we armed to fight the cartels. Poverty in the extreme is also a motivation.

No Childhood Here: Why Central American Children are Fleeing Their Homes

What’s the logic for requiring solutions to all the problems south of us before we reform our own problems?

What ‘connections’ are you talking about?

The people calling for increased border security would be calling for it whether the people were economic migrants or fleeing torture and death. You seem to be casting them in an even worse light by saying that their objections to these migrants is that they’re fleeing lawlessness.

Activist to distribute flashlights to border crossers

Immigrant-rights activists have set up water stations, gone out nearly daily to find border crossers in distress, and circulated warning posters and maps of the locations of those who have died in the desert.

All with the goal of stopping the deaths of immigrants trying to cross into the United States.

Now Robin Hoover, founder and former member of the local group Humane Borders, is planning to distribute 100 high-intensity flashlights.

Hoover will work today with a local church in Altar, Sonora, 115 miles southwest of Tucson and one of the last staging areas for would-be border crossers, to pass out the $8.32 flashlights that can illuminate a tree a half-mile away and include both a strobe and an S.O.S. function.

“I hope that this simple device will help save lives,” he said Thursday during a news conference at El Tiradito Shrine in downtown Tucson, as he held the small black flashlight under a plastic water bottle to show how it created a prismatic effect.

Quote from a friend at another web site about the 4th of Juy that I wanted to share:

I finally have that flintlock I wanted as a child in 1976. I have outgrown the desire for a tricorn. Fg over a little FFFg launches a big shower of sparks out of the muzzle.

The 4th is a promise. From Thomas Jefferson to Karl Marx to Emma Goldman to Woody Guthrie to Malcolm X to Audre Lorde to Harvey Milk to Gayle Rubin to me to my daughter and little sisters in our family of choice. All we can do is try to keep it; to renew the promise as often as possible. As in the original Declaration, drafts presented on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and any other day hundreds of years later, move us slowly towards more perfect.

From that piece:

I also met two men in their early twenties who were fleeing with their adolescent sisters. In both cases, the brothers had received numerous threats in El Salvador and had fled to the U.S. in the previous year. Upon reaching the U.S., they tried to seek asylum. One was told inside the detention center where he was kept that since he was not “black or Muslim,” he could not do so.

Later in the hearing, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) helped Perry further destroy the Republican narrative on the current immigration crisis when he asked Perry to recall the dates on which the DACA policy and the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (which created special rules for unaccompanied children from non-contiguous countries) were enacted, since these are the policies that are supposedly to blame for drawing these unaccompanied children to our borders, years after the fact. Perry interrupted Swalwell to again insist that the real problem, and the only solution, is National Guard troops on the border.

Just gonna drop this here:

“The chairman of the State Public Defender Board on Thursday defended the hiring of a longtime aide to Gov. Scott Walker for the public defender office’s top IT position — even though she didn’t interview for the job and wasn’t a finalist…

Archer was hired as chief information officer for the office at a salary 31 percent higher than her predecessor. Archer also received an 11.7 percent pay raise, to $113,459 annually. Archer was not one of seven candidates who interviewed for the job, nor one of two finalists…

Archer was Walker’s administrative services director in Milwaukee County and initially was deputy administration secretary when Walker became governor. In 2011 police raided her Madison home in the John Doe investigation that led to convictions of six former Walker aides and associates. Emails from that investigation showed Archer was among Walker’s campaign and county staff who used private emails and a secret Internet router to hide campaign-related communications from public disclosure. Archer and Walker were never charged with any wrongdoing.”

We don’t have to hermetically seal the borders, but we cannot begin to manage immigrant populations until we have better control over the borders than we have now.

Controlling the border is an exercise in futility.

One thing I’ve noticed about this situation is that if Bush were still in office, he would be advocating for these children and more Conservatives would support the concept.

But since it’s Obama, they don’t.

Immigration reform was one of the few things I could support Bush on, but his own party shut him down.

Would you say we have border security right or it should be reduced?

I have no disagreement with the need for immigration policy reform.

Good luck trying to gain “functional control” of a nearly 2000 mile border, a vast majority of which is made up of sparsely populated mountains and desert.

I agree, and it won’t be cheap or simple. But the current system of human, weapons and drug trafficking has to be brought under better control before any other immigration reform measures are going to be effective.

We’re never going to have control of our ‘borders’ to that extent, though. Remember that a huge number of immigrants are people overstaying their visas, and that the border is gigantic.

I have no disagreement with the need for immigration policy reform.

We don’t have it right. We increased the number of agents too quickly, and there are some out there sorely in need of more training. We need cell phone service across the whole border area. You would not believe how primitive communications are in the remote areas. We need working technical support for the agents. We don’t need more agents.

But my main point is anything we need on the border is COMPLETELY UNRELATED to our need for immigration reform.

COMPLETELY UNRELATED.

That’s exactly what happens when papers are published which is the only place it really matters. The idea science can and should be debated publicly is a rhetorical trick used by those on the losing end. Places like Fox News have convinced the ignorant that truth is a matter of opinion where the best at arguing their points, in modern terms the best at the Gish gallop, are the anointed authorities of truth.

I have no love for the CIA which has a history of secrecy, mis-management, and over-reach. But I think it’s rather odd that someone who no longer is working there because of his own actions, was never charged, and is drawing his pension, is talking at this particular point in time.

Again, this is where GG tries to equate a sad sack contractor with a real professional intelligence agent. And this guy wasn’t prosecuted even after an investigation and is now making six figures as a “consultant”, more than he made at the CIA. How many secrets is he giving up that no one knows about now? He sounds pretty much like a loose cannon, not a real team player, along with misplaced loyalty, which are top priorities for anyone in that line of business.

The thing about stories like this is that the CIA itself is not going to talk about it, so the only story we really have is Scudder’s, and to me, it sounds a bit hinky.

“The CIA declined to comment on Scudder’s case, citing privacy restrictions and litigation related to his FOIA request. CIA personnel files obtained by The Washington Post accuse Scudder of having classified materials on his home computer and “a history of difficulty in protecting classified information.”

Why is that public servants - be they school teachers, professors, police, firemen, or regulators - who have dedicated their lives to public service are called “takers” by the righties and Scott Walker himself, while the same people defend the use of large amounts of tax monies to pay off a political ally and possible co-conspirator?

Walker’s been on the public dole his entire ‘adult’ life after getting the boot from Marquette. And violence at or near the borders as relates to cartels and smuggling of drugs contraband or people certainly should have bearing on how we approach border security. I’m as much of a Firefly fan as the next Whedon nerd, but Adam Baldwin is an idiot.

I can’t watch Firefly anymore because it’s been ‘adopted’ by anarchists, I mean libertarians.

Here’s the worst example.

Captain Mal fanboy picture

Here’s how I deconstruct it.

You don’t know me, son - Fine. We have established that the person in the picture is a stranger to the person being spoken to. Which is us on this side of the fourth wall.

So let me explain this to you once. Um, okay. We just met and you have to explain something. I’m already uncomfortable with your presence.

If I ever kill you, - Wait! What? We live in a place where interpersonal relationships are such that one of us having to die is of a high enough probability that you have to warn me as the first order of business? Really uncomfortable now.

You’ll be awake, you’ll be facing me, and you’ll be armed. - Now this is just silly. If relationships between myself and another person have deteriorated to the point where one of us has to die I’m not going to do something as stupid as a quick draw contest face to face.

I will cut their throats in their sleep. I will poison them. I will sneak up behind them and stab them in the back. I will booby trap their car. I will put a rifle bullet in their heads from several hundred yards away.

If it comes down to one of us surviving it’s going to be me, and I am not going to play fair.

I can see why the anarchists, I mean libertarians love Firefly so much thanks to this meme. But damn, it’s just a TV show and not meant to feed the anarchists Rambo fantasies.

Too bad there is not the support or political will to introduce a national ID card for all citizens for voting and social services (and legal residents for social services). Then employers and poll workers could easily check and be held accountable.
