Always been a huge Peter Gabriel fan, and one of my regrets was not being able to stick around to watch him close at Woodstock 94.

VH1 has a “Behind the Music” episode about Genesis in which the members are very complementary toward him and they couldn’t emphasize enough how important it was for them to be the front man. Unfortunately the producers of the show did a crappy job showing Peter in action, other than glimpses of him with costumes on.

PG has always been amazing… As well as his band. Credit where credit is due! I remember the days when music videos first came out. Sledgehammer and Money For Nothing were my two most favorite videos at the time. Heck, they still are.

Currently immersing myself in some SRV.

I had a chance to see him a few times before I really knew how to appreciate what he did. I was even at the show at Alpine Valley where his chopper crashed. I’ll never forget that feeling.

One commenter on BJ made the snarky comment to John Cole’s lasted brainfart that it was just one more day closer to the inevitable “I support Rand Paul” post. And I imagine that’s what we’ll see if Paul announces his candidacy next year, all those people who once told us that their fear over terrorism is why they’re supporting Dubya now saying their fear of the very government they trusted to protect them is why they’re supporting Aqua Buddha.

On the parting of ways between PG and the rest of Genesis I have the impression that it was the best development for both parties. Genesis went one way (eventually) and PG went another and both were successful in their own way.

But you know all about it, except all the bits you don’t - all the bits shared with third parties you didn’t approve of, that your posts can be shared by parties with those who you don’t know, and all kinds of data are massaged from what you provide.

And that doesn’t even begin to touch on the way Facebook manipulated posts as part of their ongoing “research”.

It is not a misnomer at all…there are a handful of right wingers holed up on the pages who are not unlike the Japanese soldier who defended his own little corner of the Philippine jungle long after the end of WWII had passed him by. Most of them seem to fancy themselves hyper Zionists who seldom post unless they have something particularly nasty and/or bigoted to say. It is sad, but at least they are isolated there.

That’s the talking point the Greenwald cult uses when you point out that tech companies like Google and Facebook are far more intrusive — you grant them PERMISSION to be intrusive.

Except that nobody ever reads those terms of service, and there are no viable alternatives to using these products. So even if you did object to it, what are you going to do? Use Bing instead of Google? And you think Bing is less intrusive?

Bad craziness and deliberate ignorance. The NSA’s stated mission is to protect American citizens, and there may be problems and issues that need to be reviewed and adjusted in that.

But companies like Google and Facebook and Linkedin are blatantly exploiting and marketing and prying into every corner of American citizens’ lives, with NO oversight, and they blithely ignore it or say, “You agreed to this.”

And they just keep signing up for every new free service without a care in the world.

Would like to stay and give Greensnow some more grief (enjoyed the PG performance, BTW!) but I went to Charlotte today to visit my son and ex-DIL (the Munchkin’s grandma), so feel the need to hit the rack early.

BTW, was pleased to see a Halal Market on the same side of town they both live in. Lots of Hispanic businesses, including a Peruvian style (rotisserie chickenw/green sauce) restaurant over there, also. Peruvian. In Charlotte. It’s really becoming diversified. If I was younger, I’d move back there. : )

That’s because Greenwald’s whole little bit falls apart the moment one acknowledges that there’s no expectation of privacy on the Internet. Hell, when I started out on the Net in the late 90s, there was still a lot of stigma towards putting your personal info out there, because you never knew who was on the other end. Now? People live their lives through Facebook, Twitter, and think nothing of who can see it because the companies promise “privacy”…while they’re selling your personal info to third parties.

LOL, Laila El-Haddad, the woman translating for Bourdain when the Arab guy was shouting and waving his hands around (Bourdain looking slightly nervous): “This is the normal tone of voice. He’s not uspet, BTW—this is the way we talk.”

So true. When I drove a taxi and was working nights, we’d often go to a diner or coffee shop for a late meal. Whenever I went with the Arab guys they’d usually end up speaking loudly in Arabic with lots of emotion and gesticulating wildly. I was used to it and didn’t really think anything of it, but sometimes the other patrons would start looking kind of concerned, no doubt calculating how fast they could get to the door and escape if things got out of control. They had no idea it was perfectly normal. Sometimes the guys would actually smile and turn around to reassure them in English.

re: #45 Charles Johnson

Wow. The records are “imperfect?” Why didn’t this point show up in his article?

I’m trying to think what the actual scenario might look like to produce that answer from him.

From what Gellman said, it seems like they got a bunch of files related to a specific investigation. X number of them were flagged as containing email addresses that were minimized, but some other document in the batch said that there were X+900 email addresses scooped by the investigation that needed to be examined.

So… is the batch incomplete and there are files missing that would have contained those extra email addresses? Were the addresses investigated and it was determined they didn’t need to be minimized, and the document noting this wasn’t included in the batch? Or were they genuinely missed and accidentally left unminimized? Or something else I’m not thinking of?

And even if the accidentally left unminimized theory is true (which is what Gellman tried to imply in the article), that still doesn’t answer whether those email addresses belonged to actual US citizens, or whether the Post even tried to figure out who they belonged to.

Then I met his parents. The weirdest thing: when we used to go to his parents house, I viewed it the same as being at my parents house: passionate conversation meant raised voices (not anger). Very interesting thing happened at last night’s Umphrey’s McGee Red Rocks show. For their number “End Of The Road” guitarist Jake Cinninger switched guitars (something that pretty much never happens). The guitar he was playing once belonged to Jerry Garcia and was his main ax through the middle 70s.

Jerry and his custom Travis Bean TB500 serial # 12

Well, as it happens, one of the band’s friends bought that guitar at auction and they brought it to Red Rocks and asked Jake if he wanted to play it at the show.

I’d love to see Bob Dylan here in NYC — judging by audience tapes , he’s in very fine voice this year and his cowboy band is killer-diller — but his shows sell out in a couple of seconds.

I saw Dylan at the Rocks in 2007 when he was pimping Modern Times. He opened the show with “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” and even donned a guitar for the occasion. That was hilarious.

He played his best 60s stuff and the best stuff he’d done since Time Out Of Mind. I thought it was a great show.

That’s the last time I saw Dylan, and I’ve heard wildly conflicting reports from concert-goers since - some positive but mostly negative - about his live performance these days.

I caught that tour. Lotsa fun and lotsa feedback. Nowadays, he’s doing a lot of material from his last album, which was very strong. Not much if any guitar playing, mostly crooning on the mic and playing piano. He’s slowed things down kinda jazz like. concentrating on putting the lyrics across. I’ve read that he has arthritis. Jeez, I sound like such a groupie, and I suppose I am!

Wish I had something to add about Peter Gabriel, but I haven’t listened to him since his Genesis days.

I get the feeling that the list of issues was compiled by the pollster since it doesn’t seem to be a laundry list of India’s actual problems. I don’t see gang rape there, or corruption, for example.

Not to pick on India, though. Good to see birth control is on the radar as beneficial and not considered to be unacceptable.

I have a new found respect for former POTUS William McKinley.

“In 1893, this did not do the damage it might have in another year. The public was sympathetic. Voluntary public offerings received at the governor’s office alone exceeded the $130,000 needed, although they were all returned. During that autumn’s gubernatorial campaign, the miners McKinley had defended without charge in 1876 came to see him; they wanted to help by paying the money he had earlier refused. . . “

I’ve been gone from Lubbock for several months now, but I still keep up with the weird goings-on in America’s second most conservative city.

For instance, I have recently become aware of the existence of a loosely organized network of recreational sado-masochists in Lubbock. No big deal, they have those everywhere. The truly weird thing about this bunch, though, is that it has existed for at least 50 years and is composed largely of people in their 60s and 70s. They are so secretive not because they are breaking the law (they aren’t) but to protect their respective positions in the community. Most are outwardly very staid, church going people. It appears in fact that their network exists as a sort of underground parallel to some of the organized inter-church activities in those parts.

So what happens when a woman goes to her gyn and is told it is a matter of life and death for her not to become pregnant? She then must pay for her own means of b/c or even have a operation which would prevent her from having children. She gets a second opinion which confirms the first. She has already had a few medical miscarriages. B/c would allow her to have fairly regular function of her reproductive organs (production of hormones, etc), but an operation would change all that, so she is reluctant to have one.

What, then? I would sue the hell out of HL. And fucking win.

My daughter used to work at B&H, the photo/electronics store in NYC which is owned by Hasidic Jews. Her health insurance benefits included all forms of contraception. She used birth control for a year after she got married until she & her husband were ready to start a family.

She had her baby by C-section and told she is not allowed to become pregnant again for 3 years. She goes to Planned Parenthood for her birth control requirements. (She lives in Florida now and doesn’t work at B&H any more)

Giant invasive lizards a potential threat to nesting reptiles
Tegu lizards a threat to native reptiles

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Research cameras trained on the nests of Florida reptiles have caught giant, invasive lizards in the act of pilfering eggs - making them a potential threat to native turtles, alligators and crocodiles.
The Argentine black and white tegu, which can grow 4 feet or more, is already found in areas populated by threatened species, including the Eastern indigo snake, Cape Sable seaside sparrow and gopher tortoise. And if the tegus’ range expands, the list of native species potentially at risk could grow to include sea turtles, shore birds and ground-nesting migratory birds.

If you’re not married by 30 these days, you’re not worthy, you’ve already been “spoiled” by education and a decent job.

Back when I was young, if you weren’t married by 21, you were hopeless. It happened to my late sister, who corresponded w/someone in the Navy, someone she had never met, orig from SC, who turned out to be her tormenter for over 20 yrs because she didn’t want to be “an old maid”. At 21. Hers was a typical story of the time. He hated me because I knew exactly what he was and tried to talk her out of it.

re: #175 Justanotherhuman

If you’re not married by 30 these days, you’re not worthy, you’ve already been “spoiled” by education and a decent job.

This is the prevailing attitude n most parts of China. I have former students whose parents fret if they don’t have boyfriends, and whose parents will arrange marriages if their daughters don’t have someone suitable. College graduates are discouraged from pursuing master’s degrees, or Ph.D.’s, because families figure the girl will be be close to 30 by the time her education finishes, and likely still single. She’ll be a “leftover” woman.

Combined with this attitude is the tradition for women to “marry up” and men to “marry down.” That is, a woman shouldn’t marry a man with a lower education or income than she has, and a man shouldn’t marry a woman with a greater education or income than he has. That’s the main reason why well educated and/or professionally successful women in China have trouble finding suitable mates.

Traditions die hard, even in communist China or in modern America.

186 Self Respecting Woman Voter Against the GOP  Jul 7, 2014 7:46:43am

re: #177 wheat-dogghazi

So weird. You’d think with the shortage of women that they’d be more highly valued.

Yeah, you’d think, but there’s many Chinese traditional attitudes that 65 years of Communist rule have not eliminated.

The imbalance between the number of men and women is increasing, an unintended consequence of the one-child policy and a traditional preference for male children. The government has recently loosened the rules to permit some urban couples to have more than one kid, but it’s too little too late. Either Chinese men are going to have to swallow their pride and “marry up” or they will have import their brides from abroad.

Had a chihuahua mix, stocky little thing but w/the look, not over 12 lbs—he was his own person, for sure. My son had to take my 2 dogs since we can’t have pets here, and he died last year at 12 yrs old. We were constantly having to watch for him outside since he was fair game for large birds. I don’t like pit bulls usually, because so many people train them the wrong way—as attack, fighting, and “guard” dogs. I keep my distance from them.

It’s a very old talking point.

Women are not allowed to enjoy sex. They are not allowed to be sexual. Sex must be a source of shame for a woman, and if she has it, she must be “burdened” with the “consequences” of her actions by bearing a child. And that childbirth must be painful and bring her to her knees because women are the stand-in for Eve, whose sin forced man from the Garden.

Actually, the NRA does not want an actual shooting incident, as it would likely end fairly badly for the NRA’s cause. The NRA isn’t even the major driver of gun-related paranoia anymore, as they’ve been overtaken by Internet-based groups that don’t have much money or organization, but can serve up lots and lots of crazy-sauce.

Not to feel sorry for them, but these days the NRA has had to repeatedly justify government ammunition purchases from ATK and has been booed by part its base each time.

I reckon you mean the North Koreans. Southerners only come to China to travel or invest, not to marry.

Northerners are forbidden to emigrate. Some try to sneak across the Chinese border (fording a river) and manage not to get caught by the border patrol on either side. They can blend in to the local population, since there is a Korean-speaking minority there, but like undocumented immigrants in the USA, the undocumented Koreans have to be really careful not to be caught. Chinese policy is to ship them right back to NoKo, where who knows what terrible things await them.

Honestly, I don’t think any Chinese man would want to marry a North Korean. The cultural differences would be huge. North Korea is several decades behind the rest of the world in many ways.

Electronic devices to face scrutiny under new TSA security measures

Plane travelers who can switch on their cellphones or other electronic devices will be able to take them aboard as part of new security measures, US authorities said.

US-bound travelers from Europe and the Middle East have faced tighter airport security in recent days over fears that Al-Qaeda-linked militants are developing new explosives that could be slipped onto planes undetected.

The checks focused on electronic items such as laptops and cellphones, amid fears that extremists such as Al-Qaeda could use them as their latest tactic in a long campaign of attacks involving aircraft.

“During the security examination, officers may also ask that owners power up some devices, including cellphones,” the US Transportation Security Administration said in a statement Sunday, noting that all electronic devices are screened by security officers.

“Powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft. The traveler may also undergo additional screening.”

The agency noted that it could “adjust” security measures further in order to provide maximum security to travelers.

If life begins at conception, shouldn’t census rolls reflect that? It’d be a 9 month advance on census rolls, and could affect distribution of federal funds, especially since not every fertilization/implantation results in a live birth.

I’ll believe it when you can get a life insurance policy for a fetus.

This was good to see, and I’ll give PM Netanyahu credit for it.

Netanyahu calls father of slain Palestinian teen

In a statement, Netanyahu’s office said he had spoken with the teenager’s father, Hussein Abukhdair, to offer his condolences and express his outrage over the “abhorrent” murder a day after the security forces confirmed arresting six Jewish extremists on suspicion of involvement.

“I would like to express my outrage and that of the citizens of Israel over the reprehensible murder of your son,” Netanyahu told him.

“We acted immediately to apprehend the murderers. We will bring them to trial and they will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.

“We denounce all brutal behavior. The murder of your son is abhorrent and cannot be countenanced by any human being.”

It sucks but the Israelis have no good options. I don’t think an incursion into Gaza would accomplish much. The airstrikes are a minor inconvenience to Hamas. There’s just not much they can do.

#BBCtrending: What are #RamadanProblems?

Ramadan started last weekend, and Muslims around the world are fasting from dawn to sunset. Thousands of people have been sharing their experience using the hashtag #RamadanProblems. It’s a trend that runs right across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Vine and more.

Just like the commonly used #FirstWorldProblems, many of the tweets are jokey in tone. “It’s about Muslims who are fasting who don’t take themselves too seriously,” says Uzma Atcha from Dubai, who has been using the hashtag, “It sort of shows the world that we’re regular people - we go through the same struggles.”

The hashtag has been around for a while but has “exploded on the Twittersphere” this year, she says. The US, the UK, Pakistan, Canada and the United Arab Emirates are the top countries using the hashtag.

Some are sharing tips and practical advice. Some of the discussion is aimed at helping non-Muslims get a better understanding of Ramadan. But perhaps unsurprisingly, a huge amount of the conversation is about hunger. […]

The spy agency collected and stored intimate chats, photos, and emails belonging to innocent Americans-and secured them so poorly that newspaper reporters can now browse through them at will.

After they were stolen by Snowden and dumped in the laps of journalists who had an axe to grind against the USG and want to see the NSA hamstrung.

They were still secure when the NSA had full control over them. What changed? Oh, nothing but Snowden lying his way into unauthorized accounts to get at the data.

But I’m still waiting for the emails Snowden sent to the NSA or someone in Congress indicating his intention to be a whistleblower.

And speaking of “dumb,” that Conor Friedersdorf breaks new ground in dumb libertarian rationalizations.

I never thought I’d see this day: The founder of Lawfare has finally declared that a national-security-state employee perpetrated a huge civil-liberties violation! Remember this if he ever again claims that NSA critics can’t point to a single serious abuse at the agency. Wittes himself now says there’s been a serious abuse.

What is it about libertarians that makes them resort to bullshit rhetorical tricks like this? Freidersdorf knows very well that isn’t the argument Wittes made - he’s deliberately twisting it. These people aren’t right in the head.

Jewish group organizes visit with family of slain Arab teen

A Jewish anti-racism group has arranged to visit the mourning tent of the Abu Khdeir family in East Jerusalem later on Tuesday to offer condolences over the killing of Israeli Arab teenager Muhammed Abu Khdeir, allegedly by Jewish extremists.

The Tag Meir organization published details of the event on Facebook overnight Sunday and noted that the trip had been arranged with the approval of the family.

“The visit is coordinated with the Abu Khdeir family, which welcomes and is moved by our upcoming arrival at their mourning tent,” the group said.

Yeah, I’ve seen one of those “out of context” defenses being raised by a RWNJ on a chat network. Basically, that guy claimed it was taken out of context, and that the honorable gentleman from Kentucky meant the rate of temp change.

Only that don’t work so well either. I won’t make your eyes glaze over by going through the details, but basically, the argument fails on three points.

(1) The Inverse Square Law dictates that the energy of any given source decrease the further from the source you go.

(2) If you are trying to establish a correlation between the temperature changes of two planets, you need longitudinal data, preferably over both the well-known 11-year or so solar cycle, but also the less known one which spans centuries.

(3) Because of (1), the changes in temperature on Mars will be minute, which means that you need a precision temperature sensor for your longitudinal data (see (2)). Such sensors have not been on the surface of Mars long enough. This guy was claiming that one could measure temperatures of remote stellar bodies, but failed to take into account the margin of error of such measurements, especially when it comes to planetary bodies (basically, the margin of error is greater than the minute variations).

And then the guy began claiming that I was using a strawman…. Am I retarded, or isn’t the “out of context” argument, at least in this form (rate of change) not only DoA, but still born?

Bonus Derp:

Probing what knowledge this guy has generally, I decided to do a pop quiz on him about protective signs, with the result that he would not hesitate to attack targets with a red square standing on its corner or three orange dots in a row.

When I point out to him that these are international protective signs and that the United States is party to the treaty which defines them and AFAICT, has them written into law, he begins a tirade about how the US does not need to respect no stinking UN commie signage.

And this guy often implies he has US military training and that he is prepared for when the revolution comes. Yet he doesn’t seem to know how to keep himself out of the very deep shit (sorry, there’s no other way of putting it) he will be in if he attacks protected targets.
