Two Young, Gun-Wielding Mothers Appear Side-by-Side on Twitter

Fanaticism, dressed in similar symbols, but in different contexts
Internet • Views: 62,630

Holly Fisher, aka “Holly Hobby Lobby,” thought she was being pretty clever tweeting her super-patriotic selfie this week.

There she is, standing in front of a huge American flag, with a huge Bible in her left arm, and a serious looking assault rifle in her right. Take that, librulz!

Holly Fisher aka Holly Hobby Lobby

But the law of unintended consequences caught up with her.

Holly Fisher, a conservative Christian, has been getting insane amounts of attention recently by trolling liberals on social media over the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision. Unfortunately, she tried to up the ante one too many times and now she has unintentionally become the living symbol of how fundamentalism, no matter in what religion, looks disturbingly similar.

More: - Woman’s Attempt to Troll Liberals Backfires When Someone Notices This Disturbing Similarity

Holly’s imagery and pose were very similar to a photo of another young woman, standing in front of an Islamic flag, holding the Quran in her left hand and an assault rifle in her right. Rather than looking merely sweet, this woman looks defiant.

Predictably. someone Photoshopped the two images side-by-side and tweeted the result. Take that, conservatives!

American patriot on the left, Palestinian suicide bomber on the right

So, who is the woman on the right? She’s not a liberal plant, and the photo was not staged to tweak Holly Fisher.

The woman on the right was Reem Riyashi. Like Holly Fisher, she has children. Unlike Holly Fisher, Riyashi was a suicide bomber. She killed herself and four Israelis on January 14, 2004, in Gaza City. She was 22. en.wikipedia.org

Her photographs are archived at Getty Images.

(Some sources have misidentified her as Samantha Lewthwaite, “the White Widow,” who’s been implicated in terror attacks in Kenya and elsewhere. Apparently, The Daily Mail mistakenly used Riyashi’s photo to illustrate an article about Lewthwaite. A sharp commenter at PZ Myers’ blog, Pharyngula, caught the error.)

Two young mothers in similar poses, with similar symbols, but in different contexts.

One is a patriot who probably attends church every week and likes to shoot guns as a hobby. The other was a patriot who probably worshiped at her mosque every week and shot guns as part of her combat training. One is alive, enjoying her freedom to tweak “librulz” with ineffective selfies. The other is dead and a murderer, because she believed her patriotism and her religion were more important than life itself.

Fanaticism is dangerous. It’s the cause for a lot of the grief in this world, and for the political stalemates in the USA. Instead of celebrating it, we ought to be backing away from it.

Holly Hobby Lobby ought to take time to reflect what message she really wants to send out into the Twitterverse.

Sure extremism is bad, but by golly Holly is a good christian with a gun so there you go. Big difference right? Holly would never force her religious beliefs on someone because… oh shit never mind guess it doesn’t matter which side slaps you in the face and says do it my way or I will gun you down, there really may not be a lot of difference. As those like Holly seem to say freedom for me means I get to tell you how to live and you can just suck on it. Some days it is hard to stay positive.

2 Tigger2  Jul 7, 2014 8:37:40am

The way I see it both of them are trying to force their own form of Sharia law on people by the threat of force and in the name of their country, Of the two ladies pictured as far as I’m concerned one is no better than the other.

I love the one tweet trying to show the differences between the two photos. I also love how she’s trying to defend herself. Just own up to taking a picture that is highly reminiscent of one a terrorist suicide bomber took. One would think that this would set off a light bulb in a person’s head.

7 Romantic Heretic  Jul 7, 2014 10:54:41am

Over at Facebook someone commented, “The one of the left represents freedom. The one on the right represents terrorism.”

To which I replied, “Of course they do.” I’m sure my “Please stop talking and let the adults discuss this” tone got through to him.

Meabwhile, from today’s “Fox Insider” email:

Neace received a code of ethics violation in March of 2011. It claims that in addition to several customers complaining about her telling them to ‘Have a blessed day,’ Neace also asked a customer quote “Did you just take the Lord’s name in vain?” and then proceeded to talk to him about salvation.

Now we’re going to have a discussion about whether employers can fire employees who express their religious freedom by harassing the customers.

aside from the fact that the u.s. constitution grants no one and no thing the power to require one person to pay for another person’s recreational drugs (and that is what artificial contraceptives are), the application of the law by the executive branch was rightly smacked down.

Spelling appears as it did in the original.

When I was young, I did a lot of jobs that involved directly serving customers, including briefly bank teller. It wasn’t the case with bank teller, but for some of them, you had a fairly exact script. On one job, which involved taking orders for theater tickets over the phone and therefore dealt with a lot of visitors, we were told to never make any recommendations for restaurants or anything else although people frequently asked. We were supposed to be representing the company. That’s what you’re getting paid for. There’s all sorts of things you can’t do while you’re getting paid to work. Prostyletize on your own time.

re: #41 Backwoods_Sleuth

The MDA alert is probably related to protests/riots that the Israeli government is expecting/underway and not the result of a rocket/mortar fire against Jerusalem.

Thus far, Hamas has not shown itself to be capable of firing rockets/missiles with that kind of range. The majority of projectiles fired by Hamas are kassams, with a sprinkling of grads, neither of which have the range. They could do damage to places like Ashdod, Ashkelon, Sderot, and other areas close in to Gaza.

They’d sooner hit Tel Aviv than Jerusalem though; Hamas rockets and missiles are essentially unguided, so they’d need a lot of luck to hit whatever they’re aiming at.

Firing at Jerusalem could result in hitting the Dome of the Rock just as surely as it could hit the Knesset.

It’d be a different story if Hamas was operating in the West Bank with those rocket/mortar launchers though.

Zedushka finally got around to doing our taxes, we owe about $2000. :(

It’s not only the United States which is seeing the wage theft problem, it is becoming increasingly common in Sweden as well.

Basically, what happens is that an employer comes up with excuse after excuse not to pay the worker his or her wages (to varying degrees).
This has as a result that the worker has to go on welfare to survive. Welfare which has to be paid back once he or she gets her wage.
Because the government policy is to incentivise people to work, the regulations regarding welfare have been tightened under the conservative-led alliance admin here.
This means that the worker will not get any help from the welfare agency to pay for a lawyer to argue his or her wage case in court.
But the worker can’t quit from the wage-thieving employer either, as that is, per the welfare regulation, refusing to work, which means the worker loses eligibility for welfare and has to pay back every penny of the welfare.

Unions here are swamped with wage-theft cases, but the crime is not prioritized by police.

I think every wingnut has this fantasy of being a sweatshop owner, have absolute power over employees, pay them shit, and say IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT HERE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! when everywhere else is run by other wingnuts who offer the same or worse working conditions: CAPTAINS OF INDUSTRY!!! PRODUCERS!!! MAKERS!!! and their work force is just MOOCHERS!!!! LAZY TAKERS!!!! PARASITES!!!!!

More fallout from the Snowden thefts. Is this real damage, or just hype, if the Germany employee of the BND only offered “contact details”?

Exclusive: CIA had role in Germany spy affair

reuters.com

“German politicians have said that the suspect, an employee of the country’s foreign intelligence service, admitted passing to an American contact details concerning a German parliamentary committee’s investigation of alleged U.S. eavesdropping disclosed by Edward Snowden, a former contractor for the U.S. National Security Agency.

“The U.S. officials who confirmed the CIA’s role spoke on condition of anonymity, and offered no further details.

(snip)

“Snowden’s revelations last year, which included evidence that the NSA was targeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s personal cell phone, frosted U.S.-German relations. The White House agreed to stop targeting Merkel, but rejected Berlin’s pleas for a wider “no spy” pact.” More

I’m going to say this then clear off, so those who want to down-ding may do so, but to me it remains a fact that Holly Fisher has not killed or tried to kill anyone. And that sets her wholly apart from that terrorist Reem Riyashi. Comparing the two is moral confusion. Speaking out in support of of an organization you approve of that is not planning to kill others is light-years away from blowing yourself up to kill as many of the ‘enemy’ as possible.

You don’t understand the comparison that’s being made. It’s about the image they’re presenting, not what they’ve actually done.

Don’t forget that women really do die as a result of the kind of politics being pushed by Holly Fisher.

Frankly DF, the level of brainwashing is similar. Just because she’s trained to be a “good wife” rather than explicitly committing murder does not change that both are pushing an extremist world view with very similar iconography and very similar goals for women’s lives.

Fundamentalism is a poison that kills the soul of everything it touches. Both of these women are victims of fundamentalism and both will make further victims - one by killing them one by trying to make others believe in the same sickness she has.

re: #6 FortyDeuce

I love the one tweet trying to show the differences between the two photos. I also love how she’s trying to defend herself. Just own up to taking a picture that is highly reminiscent of one a terrorist suicide bomber took. One would think that this would set off a light bulb in a person’s head.

Not enough wattage to light that bulb.

It’s not “moral confusion” to say that the kind of policies inherent in the image that HLL presents have lead to death in the past, the present and would in the future. Whether one person at a time or more, it’s the same effect over time, as a suicide bomber.

But when you proudly adopt the exact same iconography as theocratic terrorists, there is a reason to be concerned.

A holy book and a gun. When that’s the basis of your worldview, things don’t usually turn out well. It’s essentially pre-modern, medieval and certainly reactionary in both its style and the content of its message.

If Reem could vote for a party that sent people to the Knesset to pursue her preferred policies… or if Holly couldn’t vote for a party to send people to Congress to pursue her preferred policies…

That’s the difference in who uses violent imagery and who uses actual physical violence.

Ironically, though, Holly doesn’t seem to believe that secular democracy is the answer. Her symbols suggest that she would at least prefer a theocracy, if not a downright authoritarian regime.

Poor Holly Fisher. I wonder how she’s feeling today.

As of last night she seemed to be handling the pic fairly well:

Sad to say, in addition to within the bounds criticism and mockery, she also got subjected to some of the same misogynist crap that people like Sandra Fluke and Amanda Marcotte have to deal with on a daily basis.

Always great to see a handful of assholes stand up for women’s reproductive rights by calling another woman a see you next time.

You’re right. I may disagree with Ms Fisher’s picture and sentiment but she does not deserve to be trashed like that. I wish people of all political leanings would stop being so vicious toward women.
