Beautiful stuff. Thanks, Charles!

I always tell people if they want to hear some ethereal acoustic guitar go to LGF and go to the tag “Acoustic Guitar.” Plenty to go around.

GAZE

(the good kind of GAZE)

Humans can be so ugly and vile but then stuff like this happens. Every time you think everything has been done with a guitar another video gets posted on LGF and I’m just blown away. And not just technique, which is important but not the end game: it’s still music, beautiful music.

Maybe we won’t completely blow it all up.

OT: I really hate it when politics and work get wrapped up in one another.

- I work for a major wireless carrier. This past week my manager held a team meeting in which we talked about, among other things, taxes (specifically income tax withholding). He decided to use this opportunity to let us all know that he thinks the current administration is the worst that’s ever been.

- The TV in the break room is usually on Fox News

- Another guy on my team was blabbing on about “Communism” and “Socialism” while we were in training the other day.

- Three employees got into a verbal tiff after one of them came to work wearing an Obama t-shirt and riled some wingnut coworkers of mine in the process.

- Several wingnut themed flyers have shown up in the break room, including one inviting us to support Ted Cruz and another to “Fight for freedom.”

- This one I can’t blame on the company, but I was on a call recently with a man whose wifi was called “Shoot that N***er Obama”

Which is more than a little bizarre seeing as from a strictly theological point-of-view, Jews and Muslims have far more in common then either does to Christianity; that whole divinity of Jesus, being a god in human form business. In both Judaism and Islam, that notion is considered blasphemous, and at the very least a holdover from the ancient Mediterranean pagan world (like Zeus popping down in the form of an elderly man to see what the locals are up to or to get his freak on with some pretty young lass, etc.) where stories of demigods (Perseus, Hercules, et al) or gods in human form are ubiquitous.

Maryland: We only have one GOP congressman, but god if he isn’t one of the worst—

The Maryland congressman challenging the District’s new marijuana-decriminalization law is no stranger to unpopular stances, having survived a contentious 12 years as a Republican lawmaker in the state’s Democratic-dominated General Assembly.

During last fall’s budget standoff, Rep. Andy Harris was one of the last true believers, continuing to vote against the federal budget even at the risk of prolonging a government shutdown. He equates mandated insurance coverage of contraception with the burning of churches and medical use of marijuana with telling patients to chew on mold instead of taking penicillin.

As a state senator in 2008, Harris tried to withhold funding to the University of Maryland because students planned to screen an X-rated film. He said he considers pornography “poison.”

(snip)

Harris, 57, says he enjoys collaborating with Democrats, especially on health policy — although he fiercely opposes the full Affordable Care Act.

I see. “Enjoys collaborating with Democrats” on healthy policy but happens to “fiercely” oppose Obamacare. See what I mean?

If you look at Christianity dispassionately, you can see the Greek and Roman influence everywhere - statues of Jesus and Mary, icons, sacred relics, to name a few. To make the new religion more appealing to the gentiles, Paul and his followers stripped away the Judaic legal requirements. It was a great PR idea, but as Maimonides observed, it allowed the introduction of pagan habits that to this day have never been eliminated. In fact, Christianity tends to acquire new traditions by accretion (Easter bunny, Santa Claus, Xmas trees, etc.), rather like Hinduism.

Naturally, the Religious Right would deny all of the foregoing and accuse me of being Satan’s spawn, or worse yet, an intellectual.

A lot of the Romanizing damage was done after Paul in things like the pastoral letters written in his name. Still, the damage was done and most fundies don’t have a very good understanding of the actual history of the religion or, worse, of how the scriptures were developed over time.

It’s why I find studying Jesus’ roots to give me a better understanding of what he was really teaching than what some ignorant literal minded fundy wants to claim he was teaching so he can have more secular power over his congregation.

35 lawhawk  Jul 14, 2014 6:20:27am

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Woke this morning to a bunch of tweets about how Charles has turned on Israel.

1) Nice to see how irrelevant Charles is that I’m being told in my twitter feed just what Charles is up to. How considerate of them.

2) I’ve got to go and actually read what was written, and not just the few bits quoted.

3) I can still respect someone who has a differing opinion on Israel, the state of the Middle East, or anything else for that matter if I’m accorded the same respect to disagree.

Israel is in a difficult position. They’re getting shelled indiscriminately by a foe whose entire reason for existence is to see Israel wiped off the map, even though they lack the capability to do it. Instead, they now have the capability to launch attacks that can rattle 90% of the population centers (greater Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are where most Israelis live, so if you can hit those areas, you’re getting at the heart of the Israeli population). You’ll cause economic harm, and thus far few casualties and no loss of Israeli lives.

How can a nation sustain itself under such onslaught? Luck and technology - both the lack of technology by Hamas to target and Israel’s technological advantages to eliminate threatening missiles that might hit targets inside Israel. Iron Dome is the great neutralizer. It makes Israel safer and shows just how little Hamas can do.

So, what to make of the casualties inflicted in Gaza by Israel’s reprisal strikes. Those casualties are on Hamas. But for Hamas initiating the incessant barrages, Israel would not have carried out the raids.

In coming months, we’ll probably get a more accurate picture of just who Israel killed. The media reports rightfully play up civilian casualties in the conflict, but as we learned after Operation Cast Lead, the civilian numbers were far lower than initially reported as Hamas masked their own losses in civilian garb.

Is Israel doing enough to minimize casualties? The answer is always that they could do more, and that’s even with Israel doing more to minimize civilian casualties than any other nation when faced with the attacks Israel has faced on a daily basis. Knocking on the roof and phone calls are good, but it appears that they aren’t done in all cases, or that the time to evacuate those buildings isn’t long enough. Gazans have been though enough of these battles/skirmishes to know that they might be able to avoid an airstrike if they present themselves on rooftops to avoid the airstrikes - but Israel has carried out strikes regardless.

Israel has to do what it must to protect itself from these attacks.

So, where do the parties go from here? Hamas can’t back down, and they can’t call for a ceasefire because it would signal that they’ve lost (which they have, but they need to show strength, both to fellow Gazans, and to other even more extreme terror groups that operate, or hope to operate, in Gaza. They can’t get nothing in return for stopping fire on Israel, because it would indicate just how bad off Hamas is, even with the influx of Iranian-designed long range missiles that haven’t been any more effective in causing casualties than the kassams and grads that were used previously.

Israel could stop reprisal raids, but Israelis aren’t going to tolerate ceasing airstrikes while they continue to face barrages, some of which have attempted to overwhelm Iron Dome systems.

Neither side has an incentive to back down the attacks, and there aren’t intermediaries that Hamas will deal with that could craft a deal to stop the fighting. Egypt isn’t that player this time, not with the Muslim Brotherhood as an enemy of the state. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, or even Turkey or Jordan could be those players, but Hamas isn’t likely to go along with a deal unless they get status quo ante. Israel isn’t likely to make that happen, at least not right away. Israel is going to hang on to those Hamas members they rounded up in the aftermath of the kidnapping and murder of the 3 Israeli teens. But that too is the genesis of whatever final deal ends this round.

The likely end of this round will be both sides stop firing on the other, and Israel will release those prisoners that aren’t directly involved in the kidnap/killing - but deported to Gaza, rather than allowed to return to the West Bank. Fatah would approve of that deal in a heartbeat; Israel gets most of what it wants, and Hamas gets to crow that they got their members released while Fatah gets a stronger position vis a vis Hamas especially with elections pending later this year (maybe, if that happens).

Gazans, on the other hand, will be worse off - as they usually are.

This, if anything, demonstrates what a pile of shit the current mainstream political reporting is in this country.

If we had actual journalism in the US, that reporter would have indicated they asked a follow-up question along the lines of “Given your history of opposing the ACA, to the extent of literally shutting down the country because of it, how do you consider that working with Democrats?”

Statues are a Catholic thing, not sure if it’s a direct Greco-Roman influence. In Eastern Orthodoxy (which is exactly as ancient) there are basically no statues, but icons are a big thing. And in Russian Orthodoxy in particular you can see some saints overtaking the functions of ancient Slavic gods: St. Ilya (Elijah) becomes responsible for thunder instead of Perun (he loudly rides in his chariot in the skies), St. Vlasij (Blasius) takes care of livestock instead of Veles.

Then there’s this.

Had a ‘conversation’ with the maybe future mother-in-law about vegetarianism, and asked Socratically at what point the old prohibitions against pork and shellfish became problematic. Obviously it falls to Paul, but the Old Testament is regrettably ignored when it becomes an inconvenience. Certainly the ability to consume something as lovely as bacon (though I admire totally those who eschew flesh-eating as a matter of principle; those ethically over moral concerns by a few degrees) has become a major conversion point and it is why I recognise Jews and Muslims as, I guess, at least, keeping to the faith and consider Christians of all stripes, apostates.

But they love their Judaic underpinnings, don’t they?

I know there’s a lot of Christian posters here and don’t actually mean to single them out. I really dig the Jesus position, especially the side the libertarians avoid.
Heard recently about Christian atheists. It’s confused as a philosophy, but I get their angle.

Oysters, clams, and mussels are an area where desires for certain textures or eating styles should not go.

My father said that the method for these (barring deep fried I think) was to chew once or twice at most, press against the roof of your mouth to get the flavorful juices out, and then swallow it.

My Swedish mother once told me what I presume to be an apocryphal tale of when Christianity was introduced into Sweden.

A church was erected to the new gods, and the locals proudly showed it off to a visiting missionary. A lovely building following the Viking style, with statues representing God, Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

God was sitting upon an ornate throne, with a missing eye and ravens perched on either shoulder; Jesus had a magnificent beard and bore a fearsome hammer and the Virgin Mary was a lovely woman with a necklace of exquisite beauty and at her feet, two cats and seated to her left, a boar.

The moral of the story: The more things change, the more they stay the same. The church in this tale was said to be located in the north of Sweden, not far from Härnösand.

My uncle, who grew up in Brooklyn but later moved to Chicago, loved raw oysters. When he would come to visit us on Long Island, he’d hit a nearby oyster bar, order a plate and wash ‘em down with beer. He preferred a little lemon juice on the oysters — if they wiggled, there were fresh.

Me, I never grew accustomed to the taste.

I have no idea what they might taste like; the texture squicks me so badly I can’t even.

Forget oysters and shellfish. Burgers.

Northern NJ has long had a huge variety of awesome burger joints, but those ranks are swelling over the past couple of years.

Microchains like Bobby’s Burger Palace (Bobby Flay’s joint), Shake Shack are joining local favorites like White Manna, White Mana, Iron Horse Tavern, Dutch House, along with other chains like Zinburger and now larger chains like Five Guys, Red Robin and Smashburger are around.

Habit Burger is entering the market this summer too, and there are others in the wings too. Heck, went to a new place called The Counter, and they had some serious burgers too (sit down, not fast casual).

The burger places rate from pure fast food joints to fast casual and proper sit-down places with bars (like The Counter, Red Robin, Dutch House and Iron Horse).

All can be good eats with a variety of burgers, toppings, and sides.

So many places to choose from that you don’t have to settle for the Burger King, McDs, or Wendys. And in the summer, nothing tops a great prepared burger.

I had ahi-tuna burgers at Zinburger and The Counter, and they were quite good (The Counter’s was better of the two- the quality of the fish appeared higher and it was cooked to the rare I requested).

The Counter is also one of the few places that has bison burgers on their regular menu. Most of the rest have beef burgers, and a few have chicken or turkey or veggie burgers.

If I find a place that has bison burgers, it gets a +1. An extra point for those that know to cook it to medium/medium rare.

I don’t think there was an original pure teaching.

The true elements are basically a no brainer to any semi-intelligent person who bothers to think.

Thru-out history, family/tribe/clan leaders did think and used the true elements to lead their people. Some were charismatic and powerful enough to maintain their rule thru their children and created dynasties.

One really charismatic person was able to get his version of the true elements to every part of the globe in the last 2000 years. His name was Paul.

Of course there wasn’t, but as a harmonization for believers it’s no worse than lots of other hypotheticals (like, that the authors of the Biblical chronology didn’t mean it literally, etc.) :)

By true elements I mean not some general foundational principles (very general commandments etc.), rather all those “direct hits”, like Hammurabi code or GIlgamesh stories vs. the Pentateuch, Yahweh-Elohim coming from the Canaanite pantheon, the fact that the pre-Islamic polytheists worshiped a main deity Allah, who was associated with the Kaaba, etc.

Cleon Skousen. Glenn Beck loves him, too. Those kids are being dealt a dish of crap, putting it mildly. Charter schools need more state BOE supervision, but that’s not going to happen in AZ.

And completely off topic, the female announcer at AZCentral needs to improve her delivery style. She’s got vocal fry (low low register of voice) at the end of nearly every sentence, which makes understanding that last bit more difficult than necessary. en.wikipedia.org

It’s a bad habit, especially among female announcers who want to sound more serious or authoritative. From the linked wikipedia article:

Some evidence exists of vocal fry becoming more common in the speech of young female speakers of American English in the early 21st century,[4][5][6][7][8] but the extent and significance of this are disputed.[9][10] Researcher Ikuko Patricia Yuasa suggests that this tendency is a product of young women endeavoring to infuse their speech with gravitas by means of reaching for the male register and found that “college-age Americans […] perceive female creaky voice as hesitant, nonaggressive, and informal but also educated, urban-oriented, and upwardly mobile”.[4]

Some details from Media Matters about the Skousen text being used at that AZ charter school.

White schoolchildren would “envy the freedom” of “colored playmates.” “Slave food, even if monotonous, was plentiful. Corn bread and bacon were the mainstays, with plenty of fruit and vegetables in season. In hog-killing time, countenances were unusually greasy. Clothing also was on the par with that of the poorer white people and no less adequate in proportion to the climate than that of Northern laborers. If [negro children] ran naked it was generally from choice, and when the white boys had to put on shoes and go away to school they were likely to envy the freedom of their colored playmates. The color line began to appear at about that time.” [The Making of America, pages 732-733]

A teacher at that Heritage Academy charter school in AZ is a graduate of an unaccredited university that one of Skousen’s protégés founded. This teacher, Rick Dalton, makes the rounds of the Tea party lecture circuit expounding on Skousen’s slant on American history.

Dalton, a cherubic-looking man with a shock of white hair who in his spare time rocks out as a guitar player, was dressed neatly in a blue vest and khakis. A former cop and graduate of George Wythe University—an unaccredited institution in Cedar City, Utah, founded by Oliver DeMille, a Skousen protégé—he teaches with NCCS president Earl Taylor at the Heritage Academy charter school in Mesa, where he hones his material on formerly homeschooled high schoolers. He punctuates his lessons with tales of his days at the police academy, Bible jokes, and stories about his immense guitar collection. And like any good evangelist, Dalton weeps.

I’ve seen some science textbooks for Christian and home school use that are so poorly written and poorly edited that they look like the authors dashed them off in an afternoon after a few stiff drinks. Someone with decent writing and illustrating skills — with the proper writing slant — could make a small fortune off these schools. Throw in a few mentions of God and Jesus, say something derogatory about Darwin, and it’s a done deal!

PBS has a Brit show called “The Bletchley Circle”… set in the mid-50’s, several of the women who are hating what they’re reduced to after the war come together as amateur detectives…

Because the episodes don’t take the full hour, PBS fills out the time with BBC interviews of little old blue-hair wrinkly hunchbacks who were so excited when it got declassified in the 1990’s, they could finally tell their husbands and offspring what they really did during the war.

To be one of Turing’s Girls, but it’s so secret they have zero credentials or work history or recommendations (“I was a shipping clerk. I was a maid.”) and the only jobs they can get later is shop clerk or nanny or typist…

Probably not, unless you’ve got roots in South Jersey.

Unfortunately, that attitude knows no boundaries.

How do your cousins square the GOP’s general anti-union stances? It’s not so much a plank in the GOP platform as it is fused into the bedrock.

Last night’s Endeavour spends a lot of time on a minor character—a 1966 sales clerk in womens’ hosiery who lost his leg in a Spitfire after his 20th Luftwaffe kill.

1. In the Annual Report Fiscal 1997-1998 of the Museum of the Confederacy, on page 37, is a listing titled, “Donors to Fund Raising Events” for the “Lone Star Ball.” One of the persons listed is “Hon. George W. Bush, Governor of Texas.” Though on the Pacifica radio program, they reported a letter from the Museum of the Confederacy stating that he wrote a fundraising letter for them, but didn’t give money.

2. On the outside back cover of the Dec. 1996 issue of the “UDC Magazine,” the official publication of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, is a letter from Texas Gov. George W. Bush on official Texas Governors stationary with the seal of the State of Texas, dated January 1, 1996. It congratulates the Texas Div. of the United Daughters of the Confederacy 100th Anniversary.

3. George W. Bush letter to the Sons of Confederate Veterans:

He wrote a letter to the SCV for their 100th anniversary.

But to be fair: web.archive.org

2. In the United Daughters of the Confederacy’s official publication, UDC Magazine, Dec. 1987, page 8, U.S. Senator Al Gore is attending a UDC function at the at Confederacy Monument in Arlington National Cemetery.

AZ charter school’s ‘Tea Party’ history book claims whites envied the ‘freedom’ of slaves ow.ly

On the other hand:

“…His slaves’ ownership of dogs also troubled and economically threatened George Washington. They apparently trained the animals quite well. “It is astonishing to see the command under which their dogs are,” Washington commented to his manager Anthony Whiting in 1792. Although the slaves probably kept the dogs ostensibly for hunting, both men felt that they used the dogs during “night robberies” to round up Mount Vernon sheep, which they then sold to certain outside “receivers.” Washington and Whiting also feared that dogs might kill the sheep. Washington eventually ordered Whiting to decide which dog or dogs to keep on each farm, then kill all the others. Afterward, “if any negro presumes under any presence whatsoever, to preserve, or bring one into the family…,” Washington proclaimed, “he shall be severely punished, and the dog hanged.” Washington was not the only plantation owner to resort to such drastic measures; Thomas Jefferson, on at least one occasion, ordered the destruction of all dogs belonging to his slaves, while permitting his overseer to retain a pair for his own use. At least one of the condemned dogs was hung as a disciplinary warning to the Monticello slaves.”

Yeah, last night in my book on antisemitism I finished the chapter covering the 700s-1300 and holy wars (the Crusades) and started on the next chapter that goes into more details on the latter part (1144-1300) of that time span, where the real “fun” begins (blood libel, etc.)

This book has been an eye-opener on so many levels: learning about ancient Jewish history and antisemitism in the ancient world (which had a different aspect or quality to it (i.e. it was more about the brutality of the times and who had power than religion per se, IOW lots of groups faced similar abuses); how Jesus (a.s.) fit into the picture and how Christianity changed; how changes to society, the increased power of the Church, and fears of The Other, the infidels/enemies of God (triggered primarily by the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land & parts of Europe, with Jews being lumped in with them as enemies) caused things to take an ugly turn, etc.

It’s a subject with a very long & complex history, but it makes for fascinating and often nail-biting reading.

Gah, conference call coming up—gotta run. BBL

These are religious Jews who think that Israel doesn’t have a right to exist because the Mosiach (Messiah) hasn’t come and that Israel can only be established when G-d is ready for it to happen. It’s estimated that there are 5,000 of them worldwide. They are an extreme fringe of the ultra-Orthodox, but because they oppose Israel’s existence, they’ll get coverage far in excess of their support.

Meanwhile, these are some other images from this past week’s protests in the City. Among those protesting, Max Blumenthal and a bunch of Palestinians who support a 1-state solution, eliminating Israel altogether (from sea to river).

Add in the usual claims that Israel engages in genocide or other Holocaust analogies, and you’ll go Godwin within 30 seconds.

BUT - and this is crucial.

The photo isn’t from protests against Israel’s fight against Gaza.

It’s a general protest against Israel’s draft law amendments that would require service among Orthodox Jews. It took place June 9, 2013. Of note, the cranes in the background with speakers, and similar photos from different vantage points around Foley Square in Manhattan.

Okay, I buried the lede there, but that’s the order in which I found items.

If the underlying cause wasn’t to sustain slavery, it does seem odd that the “Declaration of the Causes which Impel the State of Texas to Secede from the Federal Union” should include the following paragraphs:

We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable.

That in this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations; while the destruction of the existing relations between the two races, as advocated by our sectional enemies, would bring inevitable calamities upon both and desolation upon the fifteen slave-holding states.

Yup. Like the Westboro nutters, they’ll get as close to the cameras as they can, and when you have a gathering like last year’s protest by the Orthodox community in NY against the Israel draft law amendments, it makes them look like they’ve got numbers. Except that they’re the fringe of the fringe, much like the Westboros. Invariably, it’s the same small group of Neturei Karta men (and it’s always men) at any protests against Israel in NYC with these signs.
