More: Arizona Politician Mistakes ‘Y’ Campers for Migrant Children

Republican congressional candidate and state legislator Adam Kwasman had just raced up to Phoenix Tuesday morning from the protest in Oracle over the expected arrival of dozens of migrant children at a shelter.

He had tweeted from the scene, “Bus coming in. This is not compassion. This is the abrogation of the rule of law.” He included a photo of the back of a yellow school bus.

Kwasman later told me he saw the migrant children. “I was actually able to see some of the children in the buses. The fear on their faces…. This is not compassion,” he said.

But there was a problem with Kwasman’s story: There was no fear on their faces. Those weren’t the migrant children in the school bus. Those were children from the Marana school district. They were heading to the YMCA’s Triangle Y Camp, not far from the Rite of Passage shelter for the migrants, at the base of Mt. Lemmon.

12 News reporter Will Pitts, who is at the protest scene, says he saw the children laughing and taking pictures of the media.

I had to break it to Kwasman that those weren’t migrant children. Kwasman later deleted the tweet. He did back flips trying to take back the story he told me.

And while the “Y” kids showed up, the bus that Kwasman and other protesters were waiting for — packed with migrant children — won’t be going to the shelter today, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Kwasman is running in the 1st Congressional District GOP primary against House Speaker Andy Tobin and businessman Gary Kiehne. The winner will face Democratic Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick in the general election.

This is not compassion. This is the abrogation of the rule of law.

This makes no sense. And it’s not even true.

When the Underground Railroad was running, that was an act of compassion, even though it probably broke a bunch of southern escaped slave laws.

When Jews were hidden and spirited out of occupied Nazi territories, those were acts of compassions that broke Nazi laws.

(and yes, I Godwined early, so sue me)

Edit: The “not even true” is about the fact that there is a law on the books about this very thing, so it’s not abrogating anything. The rest is about the stupid juxtaposition.

8 Romantic Heretic  Jul 15, 2014 5:23:56pm

All I heard before I shut it off was something about ‘abrogating the rule of law.’

Since when have dickwads like this given two shrill hoots in Niffleheim about the rule of law?

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office

Unaccompanied Illegal Minors Being Transferred to Boys Ranch in Oracle

During the past few days, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has been informed by “whistle blowers” within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security they plan to transfer between 40 and 60 unaccompanied illegal minors to the “Sycamore Canyon Boys Ranch” in Oracle.

Our office has communicated with Homeland Security to express our public safety and public health concerns. We have already reached out to the director of the Sycamore Canyon Boys Ranch who has
confirmed Homeland Security has been in negotiations with the facility to temporarily house the minors. The facility has increased their staff by approximately 30 employees in preparation for their anticipated arrival sometime tomorrow.

Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “We already have our hands full fighting the Drug Cartels and Human Smugglers. We don’t need unaccompanied juveniles from Central America being flown into Arizona - compliments of President Obama. Local residents have every right to be upset and to protest. Our federal government has
failed to enforce any immigration laws. These children should be returned to their home country - not to Oracle, Arizona paid for by American taxpayers.” Sheriff Babeu continued “We understand there will be protesters who support and oppose ICE bringing the foreign juveniles to Oracle. The Sheriff’s Office will work to ensure the peace is maintained at these lawful assemblies.”

Republican hostility to border kids alienates Hispanics again

Apropos of something:

New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Using our tax dollars!

“…As immigration reform continues to be held up in the House, Republicans seem to be perfectly content to lose the Latino vote for a generation to come. This week’s latest misadventure: Claiming that President Obama’s $3.7 billion emergency spending request is too costly. Yet for some odd reason, the House GOP seemed to be perfectly willing to spend $227 billion on a business tax cut measure this past Friday with no mention of paying for or offsetting that amount. Because well, White millionaires can always use an unpaid tax break but when it’s money for child refugees, well that’s when we have to be careful about our spending.”

Young migrants unlikely to bring diseases to U.S., experts say

[…]

Doctors on the border have a long history of treating immigrant children who accompany their parents across the border.

Dr. Martin Garza, a volunteer pediatrician at the Sacred Heart relief shelter in McAllen, sees the same health conditions in immigrant children as in his private patients at his Edinburg clinic.

“We haven’t seen kids who have been significantly ill,” he said. “In fact, we’re seeing the opposite. I’m seeing kids that have been well taken care of in their country, that have vaccination records with them, that are not the poorest of the poor but a middle-class type person from their country.”

[…]

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, who has led the effort to bring the children to Dallas, said he was not worried about them transporting serious diseases with them.

“The community need not be concerned about a mysterious disease,” he said Wednesday after a meeting with Obama. He also conferred with Dr. Kyle Janek, executive commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, about TB testing for the children.

“The community needs to be concerned that these are children,” Jenkins said. “And, in Texas, we stand up for children.”

If any diseases should appear as a result of their transfer to Dallas, Jenkins said, “we have protocols in place that are exhaustive to quarantine children that are contagious.”

Jenkins added that immigrant children had similar health profiles and higher vaccination rates than most American children.

“The diseases that the children may carry are, for the most part, diseases that go through every elementary school in [Dallas Independent School District] every year. And the more serious diseases are the diseases that we treat at Parkland every day.”

Yellow Jackets here…

I went into my storage shed last year, and soon as I opened the door a bunch of red wasps came flying out. (and they are pretty aggressive)

They had built a nest not on the door, but in the rafters just inside and above the door. The only way I would have been able to spray them would be to open the door, run to the back of the shed, and spray back at them, putting angry wasps between me and the only exit from the shed. After due consideration, I decided that there was not even 1 part of that plan that sounded like a good idea.

I got a couple of the ‘bug bombs’ each one good for something like 800 square feet. (shed is 10 x 12). Once the sun went down and it cooled off I slipped the door open and let off not 1 but 2 inside the shed.

Next morning, they were all dead, I wasn’t stung, and I attribute it all to massive overuse of chemical weapons.

[2013] A measles outbreak in Texas traces to a congregation of a megachurch whose leader, Kenneth Copeland, reportedly has warned followers away from vaccines, advocating for faith healing and pushing the debunked notion that vaccines cause autism. One of Copeland’s churches, Eagle Mountain International Church in North Texas, is the epicenter of the outbreak, which now has hit at least 20 people

Kwasman later told me he saw the migrant children. “I was actually able to see some of the children in the buses. The fear on their faces…. This is not compassion,” he said.

Let’s assume for a second he was right, and this was a bus full of migrant kids and not a bunch of Y campers. Would migrant kids from central america be less terrified in Mexico where they’re not from either? Or in native shitholes like Honduras, with the highest murder rate in the world?

Also, when migrant busloads of children actually are seen, and those children actually are afraid, their fear is most likely to come from the hoard of angry revanchist right-wing taint-wits that are protesting and screaming at them.

Here’s a way to really freak out the Glennbots/Alex Jones types: Tell them about the “number stations”:

For decades, shortwave radio enthusiasts have been stumbling upon mysterious stations that broadcast a looping noise, such as a nursery rhyme, occasionally punctuated by someone reading a string of numbers. The most popular theory is that these are coded messages—and now, an online shortwave radio lets you listen in.

Shortwave is an ideal medium for transmitting messages to spies and the military, notes the blog War is Boring. It’s easy to broadcast globally, hard to trace and free of commercial traffic.

The theory is that spies or military personnel tune into the frequency at an appointed time and use a one-time pad to decrypt the message. Anyone else listening hears a random string of numbers with no context.

There’s a link to a web-based feed to hear them!

That’s what pisses me off the most about these assholes and their protests. It’s also what scares me the most about the militia yahoos going to “defend the border” in Texas. It would be so easy for these idiots to hurt or intimidate American kids without realizing it because they’ve decided that brown people = illegal.

There are a bunch of kids on the border who are American but don’t speak English because their parents have decided to emphasize Spanish first and then focus on English when their kids start school. Plus, down there damn near everyone speaks both languages. It’s normal. That’s going to make it harder for the gun fuckers to just aim at the brown kids and tell them to go back home.

Tom Coburn’s “$60,000 per child” talking point, dissected.

“…contra Coburn, no one is asking to spend $60,000 to deport a child. Obama’s proposal includes more than $1.6 billion for faster deportations and $433 million for strengthened border security, both of them Republican demands. A smaller, if more important amount—$64 million—will fund 40 judicial teams to help reduce the case backlog. Other parts of the supplemental aren’t meant for deporting children, but to ensure they have legal representation, and to deal with the root causes—murder and violence—for their leaving their countries. For instance, $300 million would go to the State Department for repatriating the migrants and for a media campaign in Central America to correct misconceptions about the immigration system.”

I have a horribly bad record at making predictions, so I’m going to make mine here and hope that my track record holds up and this never happens.

I see a case where there is a bus of immigrants, documented or not is immaterial. Group of militia types try to stop the bus, screaming crowd, the kind of things that we’ve already seen. Bus driver panics, foot slips and the bus lurches, or he tries to drive through them to get away.

Somebody fires a round off, and at that point it won’t be over until all the magazines are empty.

Enthusiasts named these for their “theme songs.” There was “Cherry Ripe,” which was apparently run by MI-6 in the far east and “The Lincolnshire Poacher,” a numbers station that was eventually found to be operating from RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus. Both are now off the air, but US stations and some others still broadcast, including a Cuban station known as “Atención!”. The latter figured prominently in the trial of the Cuban “Wasp” spy network in 1998.

re: #154 allegro

Jesus is not about changing God to accept us better or to atone for us, he was about changing our understanding of god, to allow us to accept that we always were saved even if we had not realized it and repented.

The story of the bible is one of greater inclusion as time progresses. We start with Abraham and his family and end with everyone included in the family of the lord. If one accepts Jesus then one must understand how he got to the teachings he gave. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” as Matthew puts it. That reminder of what was really most important in Leviticus is crucial to understand the teachings of Jesus, I believe, and is what most fundamentalists miss in their twisting of his words.
