Actually, the insane GOP is a very viable political party on the state and congressional level, as we’ve seen with the various state level lunacy and ALEC-driven legislation and the intransigence of the Congressional GOP.

I just would prefer the USA not become a one-party state. If the GOP splinters into two parts, crazy and not-crazy, then it would serve the same purpose. As it is, the GOP as it is now is a long shot for putting someone in the White House. The field the RNC is putting forth has very little national appeal outside the TPGOP.

Having a national dominant party (Democrat) and a locally dominant party (TPGOP in states and the House of Rep) will lead to the same kind of obstructionism we’ve seen since 2008. That does not make for healthy politics.

I suspect there is a very quiet struggle within the party leadership to regain a semblance of order. In the last few decades, you could almost predict who was going to win the nomination because it was clear who had the leaders’ favor. The GOP conventions were dull and predictable, not like the free-for-alls that Democratic conventions were sometimes like. The Tea party element has turned the GOP into a free-for-all, and I can’t imagine the normally staid leadership putting up with that for much longer.

But, none of the leaders are willing to publicly confront the nutjobs, because doing so would probably kill their political careers. At least, that’s my charitable assumption. The other possibility is the leadership (Boehner, McConnell, Rove, et al.) are in perfect agreement with the nutters. That would be really scary.

Indeed. There’s no filter between brain and mouth. A consummate politician rarely says what’s he or she is thinking. They usually only say what they think the listener wants to hear. The trouble with Akin, Palin and Jindal, among many others, is they don’t understand that the majority of Americans do not share their opinions and attitudes — or ignorance. So they say crap that gets them in trouble with the general electorate, as we saw in AZ with the YMCA kids and KY with the Earthlike temps on Mars.

On the other hand, a TPGOP candidate who could could keep his mouth shut and get elected to implement the TP agenda is a scary idea. I’d rather they be loudmouth idiots.

Well the fighting in Gaza continues, but there’s some interesting details about the ceasefire agreement that Egypt proposed (and Israel unilaterally accepted) yesterday. Turns out that Tony Blair had gone to Sisi in Egypt and wanted him to get more involved. The call to Israel prompted the proposal, which Hamas rejected outright.

In other words, Hamas had the opportunity to end the latest round of clashes, but refused to do so. Heck, they could have crowed that they got Israel to buckle under the incessant attacks, but instead they continued their barrages that have thus far killed one Israeli, caused some property damage, but have otherwise been ineffectual.

Israel, on the other hand, has hit at numerous Hamas targets. But the civilian casualties continue piling up.

I would love to be in a GOP strategy meeting to hear what they really think about the Tea Party. And that would be twofold…how do we work with them and/or how do we put an end to them. It would be interesting to see how Boehner handles someone like Gohmert, if he pays attention to him at all.

Or, is it all fun and games and just one huge political game show ruse?

Hamas now proposing its own deal - 10 year ceasefire, which includes Israel releasing prisoners who were released in the Shalit deal but re-arrested by Israel, opening up Gaza border crossings, and ending the sea blockade.

The cynical part of me thinks that this is their attempt to gain international favor and know that Israel would never agree to those conditions so they’ll make Israel look like the aggressor.

The cynical part of me also thinks that Hamas can’t abide by a short term ceasefire, so they’re even less likely to abide by a longer deal. After all, they went all but one month without firing rockets or mortars into Israel after the last deal was worked out in 2012. And it wouldn’t cover PIJ or the PRCs, who will also fire rockets and mortars at Israel to show that they’re even more extreme than Hamas and are even less willing to accept Israel’s right to exist.

The optimist, however thinks that a framework of a deal could be achieved - incrementally. Both sides stop shelling the other. After that holds, some prisoners get released (which has happened in the past), Israel opens up some of the border crossings and loosens some of the other restrictions, and eventually the blockade gets lifted.

The cynic keeps winning out since that’s essentially the kind of deal that Israel agreed to (immediate ceasefire, followed by discussions on remaining issues to be addressed later). It’s also following the same kind of pattern that Hamas has established when dealing with ceasefire agreements. Propose long term ceasefire that it has no intention of abiding by (see recurring rocket/mortar fire) that short circuits any other confidence building measures. If they can’t do the easy bit - the ceasefire part, why trust them on the longer and more difficult parts - like refraining from using loosened restrictions to regroup and rearm with more sophisticated weaponry.

Dozens of Rialto eighth-graders questioned whether the Holocaust occurred in essays written for an in-class assignment this spring.

Rialto Unified School District administrators, besieged by criticism after the assignment became public in May, claimed at the time that none of the students who completed the assignment questioned or denied the Holocaust, but a survey of the students’ work by this news organization found numerous examples of students expressing doubt or flatly denying that the Holocaust occurred.

“I believe the event was fake, according to source 2 the event was exhaggerated,” one student wrote. (Students’ and teachers’ original spelling and grammar are retained throughout this story.) “I felt that was strong enogh evidence to persuade me the event was a hoax.”

In some cases, students earned high marks and praise for arguing the Holocaust never occurred, with teachers praising their well-reasoned arguments:

“you did well using the evidence to support your claim,” the above student’s teacher wrote on his assignment.

The student received a grade of 23 points out of 30, with points marked off for not addressing counterclaims, capitalization and punctuation errors.

Administrators have said the district’s roughly 2,000 eighth-grade students were assigned the essays in April as a critical thinking project. After the assignment became public, the district was roundly criticized by angry parents, Jewish advocacy groups and scholars and members of the state Legislature.

“Students got high praise and grades for writing that the Holocaust was a hoax. I’m sick about that, I’m sick about that,” said Rabbi Suzanne Singer of Temple Beth El in Riverside. “It’s worse than I thought it was.”

Whoever is responsible for creating that assignment purposely failed to let the students do real research and just provided propaganda.

To write the in-class essay, students were given printouts from about.com, history.com and Holocaust denial site biblebelievers.org.au.

The claims made in the Holocaust denial handout were not specifically addressed by the other materials provided, apparently leading some students to conclude “The Diary of Anne Frank” was a hoax and that there is no evidence any Jewish people were gassed to death in German concentration camps.

“According to Fred A. Leuchter (leading specialist on the design and fabrication of execution equipment) there is no significant cyanide traces in any of the alleged gas chambers,” one student wrote. “So any open minded person can easily be persuaded to believe that the gassings were a Hoax.”

All of the names of the minors whose essays were released this month were withheld to protect their privacy.

Students completed the assignment in class, with no access to a computer or the library to debunk the claims made by the site. Such debunking is easily achieved with Internet access:

You could also reverse that: The longer that Israeli politicians, including Bibi—I’m not sure if you caught me posting yesterday that Netanyahu has also said that Israel cannot accept Palestinian sovereignty in the West Bank—call Palestinian sovereignty impossible, the peace process is stalled.

Netanyahu actually went a bit beyond saying that he couldn’t accept Palestinian sovereignty in the West Bank, and said that Israel couldn’t accept anyone else taking charge of security there, too. So where, exactly, does that leave the peace process?

That precluded any 2-state solution. 3-state solution is achievable, but Israel doesn’t want that, and most Palestinians don’t want that either; PA propaganda still pushing for a 1-state solution.

From his perspective, what peace process exists when one of the two groups representing all Palestinians (Hamas) refuses to accept Israel’s existence, and is fomenting extremists to go after Israel at every opportunity while the other (Fatah) does just enough to justify continuing to exist while doling out money to its cronies. It’s a very bleak outlook to be sure, but it also goes to the fact that he doesn’t consider Abbas to be a partner in peace either. Abbas has done nothing to suggest otherwise.

So we limp along in limbo and the absence of violence is the best that most Israelis and Palestinians hope for. The leadership on both sides has to start talking frank to their respective sides and to each other about what it actually achievable and possible. And neither is willing to do so.

But as far as being surprised about Netenyahu’s position, I’m not. He’s been anti-Palestinian for decades (his biography points to this), but as PM, he’s been more circumspect. I’m sorry, by ‘dead’, you’re saying it can simply never happen, or just not happen with current Israeli and Palestinian leadership?

But as far as being surprised about Netenyahu’s position, I’m not. He’s been anti-Palestinian for decades (his biography points to this), but as PM, he’s been more circumspect. With the current situation being untenable, he’s staking out a position more extreme possibly in hope of getting some kind of concession from the Palestinians in exchange for dropping his notion.

I think even that is giving him too much credit for willingness to negotiate—or rather, I don’t think he feels there’s anyone to actually negotiate with; I don’t think he’s looking for concessions, I think it’s a stance for domestic political consumption.

On both sides right now, I see a complete absence of belief in any sort of peace process.

Just can’t happen with the current leadership on both sides.

My longstanding thesis on ME politics is that a peace process can only work when both sides are willing to make significant concessions and cross over to work with the other side.

In 1979, it took Sadat to come to Jerusalem, and Begin was able to reciprocate and work out a deal.

Arafat may have been willing to sign Oslo, but that deal also pushed off all the tough questions for later, because Arafat was unwilling/unable to move beyond a handshake.

Some of that is due to knowing what happened to Sadat - being assassinated for a deal that actually benefited Egypt tremendously.

Abbas is no Sadat - not willing to do anything more than the absolute minimum to stay in power.

The only other peace deal between Israel and its neighbors is with Jordan, and that was because Jordan had long been a silent partner with Israel, especially after Israel assisted Jordan’s King Hussein deal with the Black September uprising by the PLO (led by Arafat).

Sharon could have been the game-changer, since he understood better than most the need to extricate Israel from Gaza, and the demographics that work against Israel. But Arafat wasn’t a willing partner, and Sharon’s stroke sidelined him permanently while Sharon’s successors were not capable of doing anything either.

And so, I’m off for a bit. Our local cinema has re-opened after extensive refurbishing, and tonight they’re showing 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film I’ve seen before, but never on the big screen, and certainly 2001 is one of those films that begs to be seen on the big screen.

I saw it on the big screen when it first came out. Then 10 years later I saw it on a 3” x 4” TV screen in a dorm room. Big is better.

I see two plausible explanations.

1. The teachers wanted to devise an exercise in critical thinking and essay writing that was topical and interesting to students BUT failed to consider the broader ramifications of questioning the Holocaust ever happened AND failed to provide the students with a variety of unbiased sources.
2. The teachers had an anti-Holocaust agenda and skewed the assignment so as to give the desired results.

Either way, it points to teacher malfeasance. 1 is not quite as bad as 2, but still puts the teachers in a very bad light. It had to be more one teacher involved, because all the district’s 8th graders were given the assignment.

I think that the framing of the question pretty clearly shows a holocaust denial agenda at work. Tragedies are not, in general, disputed.

For all the teachers to agree to the assignment is stupefying. From experience, I can surmise that an influential teacher — maybe the chair of the history department — devised the assignment and promulgated it without entertaining discussion from other teachers. Or, if there were pushback from some teachers, it was dismissed out of hand by said influential teacher.

Deniers deny everything even in the face of photographic evidence. Consider how many people refuse to believe Aldrin and Armstrong ever walked on the Moon, despite ample evidence to support that they did.

i agree that hardcore deniers will not be moved by a trip to the museum, but some of the teachers might acquire backbones and not allow such an atrocious abuse of teacher power to happen again.

I think it’s the computers/internet. My spelling and grammar skills began declining when I started working on computers with spell/grammar check. I no longer had to maintain my active memory of these things.

Yes, because that requires ingredients that are fresh, full of flavor, and prepared properly. Then you get the nuances of the flavors, the slightly sharp and complex taste of the char on the burger, the bite of the pickle against the smoothness of the cheese, the way the grilled or toasted bun adds a yeasty taste.

It’s easier to do shlock than subtle.
