Gateway Pundit Claims the “Obama Admin” Awarded a “$50M Contract” to House Migrant Children: A Bald-Faced Lie

Stunning dishonesty from the Dumbest Man on the Internet

DERP

Following up on the ridiculously awful post at Gateway Pundit highlighted by Alouette, let’s take a closer look at the claim made by Jim Hoft’s guest poster Kristinn Taylor in this screaming headline: FEDS TO OPEN $50 MILLION RESORT for ILLEGAL CHILDREN - Complete With Tennis Courts, Sauna & Pools | the Gateway Pundit.

Really? The “feds” are opening this “resort,” and it’s costing $50 million? Is any of that even remotely true?

Of course not — this is Jim Hoft and Gateway Pundit we’re talking about. As our previous post made very clear, the “feds” have nothing to do with this; a private faith-based charity made the bid on this facility, and it’s not even close to being a “luxury resort” — it’s a run-down motel that’s been on the market for sale since at least January 2013.

Kristinna Taylor makes another absurd claim in the first sentence to that ugly Gateway Pundit post:

The Obama administration has awarded a $50 million contract to a charitable group to buy a Texas resort hotel and transform it in to a 600 bed facility for juvenile illegal aliens.

[…]

According to a Hidalgo County commissioner, the BCFS contract for the Palm Aire Hotel and Suites is an annual one worth $50 million per year. It is not part of the $3.7 billion emergency funding for the illegal alien invasion requested by the Obama administration as the bill hasn’t yet passed but it is a good indication of where the money will go.

What about that one? Is that even remotely close to being factual?

Of course not! It’s an absolute bald-faced lie. The Obama administration did not “award” a $50 million contract. Here’s where that dishonest claim comes from: Nonprofit Seeks Approval to Make Palm Aire Hotel a Child Immigrant Facility. (h/t: @tettes.)

Hidalgo County leaders, including Judge Ramon Garcia and Pct. 1 Commissioner A.C. Cuellar, have been proponents of the project.

“I think we could use something like that in Weslaco,” Cuellar said. “Anytime that humanitarian problems happen I’m interested, especially when it involves kids.”

He added that the project, which BCFS said will employ 650 people and have an annual economic impact of some $50 million, would be a major development boon.

That’s right, folks; Kristinn Taylor is simply lying about this. He completely made it up (yes, Kristinn is a man).

Hidalgo County commissioner A.C. Cuellar said the project would have an economic impact of $50 million, because of the people it would employ and the services it would use. There’s no “annual contract worth $50 million.”

These people are such horrible liars, it’s mind-boggling.

And now the totally false story is featured at the top of Drudge Report:

UPDATE at 7/16/14 2:01:58 pm by Charles Johnson

As a result of the insane right wing hysteria and dishonesty over this story, Baptist Children And Family Services are dropping their plans to purchase the facility.

WESLACO - BCFS Health and Human Services on Wednesday withdrew a proposal to turn a Weslaco hotel into a facility for young illegal immigrants.

A media release from the group of non-profit agencies cited “negative backlash caused by information misreported to the public” as the reason for walking away from the project.

The agency had agreed to use $3.8 million in non-government funds to buy the Palm Aire Hotel and Suites on FM 1015.

BCFS sought to turn the hotel into a 600-bed facility, but the project didn’t reach the point of submitting the proposal to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to the media release.

That absolutely confirms that there was no “$50 million contract” — BCFS had not even submitted a grant proposal for this project.

UPDATE at 7/16/14 2:58:53 pm by Charles Johnson

And now, the false claim of a $50 million contract is being spread by Fox News:

Youtube Video

Notice that the announcer says the Baptist charity pulled out because of “information reported in the media.”

No. See the direct quote above: BCFS actually said “information MISREPORTED” in the media.

Weslaco, Texas

Weslaco is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 35,670 at the 2010 United States Census. Weslaco derives its name from the W.E. Stewart Land Company.[3] It was the hometown of Harlon Block, one of the Marines photographed raising the flag at Iwo Jima.

Streets north of the railroad tracks have Spanish names, and streets south of the railroad tracks have English ones as a consequence of a 1921 municipal ordinance which declared that land north of the tracks be reserved for Hispanic residences and businesses, and land south of the tracks be reserved for Anglo residences and businesses. During World War II, sandbag production reached a peak in Weslaco, and the town declared itself the “sandbagging capital of the world.”

Well it does sound like the Baptist group is housing migrants on a contract basis for the feds, but that they won’t be moved to this facility or community.

WESLACO - A center for unaccompanied minors set to open in Weslaco later this year will be the first of its kind in the nation, officials with a network of non-profits said.

BCFS Health and Human Services secured a multi-million federal contract to house young illegal immigrants at the site of the current Palm Aire Hotel and Suites on FM 1015.

Representatives with BCFS said the Palm Aire will undergo a multi-million dollar transformation.

BCFS runs a temporary detention center for young illegal immigrants at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Clark: Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I’d like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! re: #40 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

“Nominally” does not count. Only absolute ideological purity counts.

There might be a change to that purity thinking coming slowly.

If the dust up over the Governor of Kansas and his blowing up the state budget with his tax cuts works to get a Democrat elected as Governor helped along by endorsements by pissed off moderate Republicans then things will get a bit more sticky for Tea Party types. Same with what happened in Louisiana and the Republican run-off.

Before moderate Republicans were scared of being Tea Partied in primaries. Maybe they have figured a way of stopping that is by getting Dems elected or scaring the moderates into taking action against Tea Party types.

One thing for sure…there is a war ongoing over the future of the GOP. And if Reince Priebus is your general you have real problems.

I just hope all of this leads to the Democrats holding the Senate and maybe even taking a few surprise seats in the house this fall. It is all needed to get the GOP back in the real world…if it’s not already too late.

Interim Sheriff: Militias not Needed

[Hidalgo County] Interim Sheriff Jose Eduardo Guerra said militias from Texas and other parts of the country have contacted him. He said they offered to help deal with influx of illegal immigrants.
………….
“Since this whole influx of unaccompanied minors and the family units has drawn so much media attention, I think the message that’s getting out there is that we’re having this, an invasion of people coming into this country and that’s absolutely not true,” Guerra said.
……….
Guerra said there have been reports of incidents involving militias in others states. He said they caused more harm than good.
“They have been involved with assaults in shootings, so we don’t need that. We don’t need that here. We don’t need them, bottom line, we don’t need them,” the interim sheriff said.
…….
“If they really want to make a difference I would suggest to them that they contact their representatives, both their senators and their representatives in Congressman and have them move toward immigration reform,” Guerra said.

But What About the Children?

Over at The Gateway Pundit they have a piece on a resort in Texas that is supposedly being purchased by Baptist Child & Family Services (BCFS) for use in temporary housing for children who are apprehended at our border. The write-up of the piece is fairly balanced, although it is obviously intended to cause outrage by emphasizing the luxuriousness of the accommodations and the fact that BCFS has allegedly been awarded a $50 million federal contract for this purpose. Still, the information is presented in a straightforward manner and without drama.

Here’s what the actual bill says: S.1696 - 113th Congress (2013-2014): Women’s Health Protection Act of 2013 | Congress.gov | Library of Congress

Makes the following other restrictions on the performance of abortion unlawful and prohibits their imposition or application by any government:

a prohibition or ban prior to fetal viability;

a prohibition after fetal viability when, in the good-faith medical judgment of the treating physician, continuation of the pregnancy would pose a risk to the woman’s life or health;

a restriction that limits a woman’s ability to obtain an immediate abortion when a health care professional believes, based on good-faith medical judgment, that delay would pose a risk to the woman’s health; and

a prohibition or restriction on obtaining an abortion prior to fetal viability based on a woman’s reasons or perceived reasons or that requires her to state her reasons before obtaining an abortion prior to fetal viability.

The only time this bill allows late term abortions is if the woman’s life or health is at risk. But of course, this doesn’t matter to these fanatical assholes.

I was just talking with our graphic designer (she was born in El Salvador and her family fled during the civil war there). I forgot, California and other states had signed deals with El Salvador (and other central american countries) to basically deport gang members who came here from those countries back to those countries as a way to reduce prison populations here.

Now those same gang members basically run the show down in the various central American countries. Not that that is the only cause of strife there but it doesn’t help matters.

She told me that her family came here during the civil war back when we welcomed people from those countries as refugees (we did, after all, help instigate some of those civil wars).

I think a lot of people conveniently forget some of these things.

Why the Ku Klux Klan is delivering bags of candy in South Carolina (+video)

A voicemail message picked up when someone dials the “Klan Hotline” listed on the paper. It starts with, “Be a man join the Klan! Illegal immigration is destroying America,” discusses immigration concerns and ends with, “always remember if it ain’t white, it ain’t right. White power,” reported WISTV in Columbia, S.C.

Robert Jones told WHNS-TV that he’s the imperial klaliff of the Loyal White Knights and said the effort was part of a recruiting event they hold three times a year.

He told WISTV in Columbia, S.C., that they’re not a hate group but a civil rights organization following the Bible.

Here’s what the actual bill says: S.1696 - 113th Congress (2013-2014): Women’s Health Protection Act of 2013 | Congress.gov | Library of Congress

The only time this bill allows late term abortions is if the woman’s life or health is at risk. But of course, this doesn’t matter to these fanatical assholes.

Late term pregnancies are terminated by this procedure called “labor & delivery” although frequently they will perform what is known as a “c-section”

Meanwhile, my congressman took a trip to Central America over the weekend. Doesn’t say how many ‘illegals’ he returned via his luggage.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce says more than 200 Central American immigrants being held at a federal detention facility in southern New Mexico have been processed by immigration officials and are awaiting approval from their home countries to be returned.

The New Mexico Republican says that approval has yet to come despite assurances by Guatemalan officials.

Pearce and members of a working group established by House Speaker John Boehner traveled to Guatemala and Honduras over the weekend to talk with both countries about the immigration crisis that has engulfed the U.S. border.

Pearce told reporters Wednesday that both countries said they wanted their children returned.

And while no one in either country downplayed the violence there, he said residents the delegation spoke with were more concerned about their economic situations.

Dumbass Eric (me). That’s when what you believe to be true is confirmed by someone else, SMH.

Close. As I understand it, it means you tend to think more highly of information sources that provide data that support your preconceptions, even if they’re objectively less reliable.

IIRC, there was a really cool study of anxiety, information, and belief a few years back. True believers would become anxious if presented with solid data that contradicted their beliefs, but information - no matter how shaky - that disputed those data would not only be readily accepted, but also would result in activity in the pleasure center - that is, the sketchy information would not only ease the anxiety, but also make people feel even better.

After I read this, I experienced the same phenomenon. It made me VERY wary of accepting the first comforting story to come up on google when trying to debunk a RW story.

So many assholes.

So few vodka bottles.

Those are the wine grape growers. Pumping the ground dry and planting new vines in 100+ temperatures in a region (Paso Robles) that was once only used to dry farm, and nothing is going to stop them.

That’s big chunks of good economy literally drying up and going away. And it took a truly epic drought for there to be a problem for our agriculture.

Yeah. Our sewer is separate—so about 14.00/mo total.

Water & sewer use is included in the same bill, but usage is evenly split.

They bill us more for sewer. The EPA is on our butts for a new treatment plant.

Probably not, but the promoter has two years before it hits the ballot. I’m having a hard time envisioning just how much crazier the politics in this country will be in two years.

Two years from now is the TPGOP presidential primary season. It will be uplifting.

The ballot is the easy part. The winning is relatively easy as compared to all the rest of the things that would have to happen. What this guy might get at best is a symbolic vote and notoriety among his libertarian buddies.

Sounds kind of like the towns who let a goat run for mayor; it’s a silly idea but sometimes the goat wins.

Mayor of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, is a dog.

Mayor of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, is a dog.

Rockford AL had an official town dog, but the cat bloc kept him from making mayor.

My water bill is around $70/month living here surrounded by The Great Lakes.

What’s water cost where the rest of you live?

My water is free because I have a well and springs.

This Hound has lived in Salem for 51 years and is an appointed official. Some points of mine:

1. Once Gordon College asked the Supreme Court for a religious exemption to our civil-rights ordinances, it was game over for them; we had no other choice but to do what we did.

2. This hound has a terrible, bitter resentment against those who would tell him what his own neighborhood and life should be like. Those from outside like Beck, I hate tenfold, twentyfold and then some.

3. Equal marriage is the law of the land in my state. It is settled in Salem. SETTLED. End of discussion.

This is not the best face of a great nation. This is the underside of a great stone, which when lifted sends creepy things slithering in all directions.

We are better than this. We are more compassionate than this. We are more honorable than this.

I wish there were actual evidence of this.
