Malaysia Airlines Plane Crashes in Eastern Ukraine - Possible Missile Attack

A possible attack with an advanced Russian surface-to-air missile
World • Views: 25,685

Very bad news from Ukraine, where a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane with 295 people aboard has reportedly been shot down by Ukrainian separatists.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — A Ukrainian official said a Malaysian passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down Thursday over a town in the east of the country.

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

As with all stories like this we need to be skeptical of early reports, but this isn’t looking good. Check the comments for this thread for further updates.

The Straits Times of Singapore and the Star of Malaysia are reporting the same news about the plane being down in Ukraine, and the possibility it was shot down.

No further details yet.

I have questions.

Is it possible for a BUK missile to shoot down a plane flying at 10,000 meters?

If so, would the plane have crashed within rebel-held Ukraine? It was flying at normal cruising speed, I’d assume, about 550-600 mph.

According to Wikipedia, max engagement altitude varies from 11,000 meters (36,000 feet) to 25,0000 meters (82,000 feet) depending on the model.

In a series of tweets, he said he was in touch with the Transport Ministry in order to verify the information, and urged people not to speculate.
“No confirmation it was shot down! Our military have been instructed 2 get on it,” he said in response to a tweet saying that the plane had been shot down by rebel forces.

When I was at the beach last week there was this guy making awesome sand sculptures. He’d take long breaks and walk the beach leaving his sculpture unattended but his tools and beach gear right there so it didn’t look abandoned.

Kids would go up and play around with it and I can’t blame some of the younger ones. But some of the older ones and adults, I would just sit there and shake my head at them. Don’t people know any better?

Korean Air Lines Flight 007

Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (also known as KAL007 and KE007) was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage. On September 1, 1983, the airliner serving the flight was shot down by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor near Moneron Island, west of Sakhalin Island, in the East Sea. The interceptor’s pilot was Major Gennadi Osipovich. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed, including Lawrence McDonald, representative from Georgia in the United States House of Representatives. The aircraft was en route from Anchorage to Seoul when it flew through prohibited Soviet airspace around the time of a U.S. reconnaissance mission.

They used to divvy all that up amongst themselves later. I know because I was assigned to work there for two days during boot camp.

I would expect NSA staff to behave the same. Heck, maybe that’s how Snowden found his girlfriend in Hawaii?
