“Weird Al” Yankovic Pokes Fun at the Prison Planet Dopes: Foil

World domination, black helicopters and food wrappings

YouTube

I’ve never really understood why he’s supposed to be “Weird” Al — he’s not really that weird. Funny, sure, but weird? Captain Beefheart was weird; honestly, deeply weird. The Captain couldn’t be anything but weird. Al, on the other hand, does parodies of pop songs, usually involving food.

Nonetheless, this is a great new video that pokes fun at the Alex Jones crowd, so let’s lighten the mood a little after this heinous day, shall we?

Well, before I sign off for the weekend, I want to suggest that if the Russians shooting down KAL 007 wasn’t enough to start a war, then the shoot-down of MH17 isn’t going to cause a war either. As horrific as the latter is, it was likely a mistake. The Russians (or separatists, whoever) probably thought it was another Ukrainian military transport.

In the case of KAL 007, all evidence suggests the Soviets knew exactly what it was that they were shooting down.

Saw Johnny Winter as the opening act for George Thorogood in Pittsburgh back in 1984 or so. Unfortunately have to say that at that age I was relatively unappreciative of what I was hearing.

I was relaxing playing my guitar a bit and saw Charles put this up.

I had to add to the memorial to Johnny…off the album that really turned me on to Johnny Winter and with assistance from Ohio’s own Rick Derringer.

It’s My Own Fault from Johnny Winter And Live. Enjoy some blues with some matching twin leads to go with it all!

1983 wasn’t a particularly good year for Ronaldus Mangnus. Forced to withdraw from Lebanon after losing 241 Marines to Hezbollah. KAL 007 shot down and not a damn thing he could do about it. Obama would have been impeached had he presided over either one.

Oh well, at least he got to kick the shit out of a tiny Caribbean nation as a consolation prize.

“Word Crimes” might well be my new Al favorite: It’s brilliantly smart, funny, useful in discussions, and it even defuses one of the worst tracks to come out of popular music since… well, I’m not sure what.

re: #72 Pie-onist Overlord

‘Dukesirius’ in the comments does a good job with the history:

“The first image is Mandatory Palestine, which as I’ve mentioned in previous comments was created with an explicit mandate to create a Jewish state within it. Whatever other bullshit you want to throw at the wall, that’s a fact.

The second image shows the partition line that the Jews accepted and the Arabs rejected right before Israel declared Independence and the Arab nations attacked.

The third is where that dispute was settled. Israel probably could have just seized literally the entire country in the war, but they didn’t. Those borders are the rightful borders of Israel.

That last image shows the territory where Israel has security forces after the Oslo Agreement. They are there to ensure the security of Israel, and have wound up being the security forces for the settlers as well, which as I’ve mentioned previously is fucked up. Let’s not pretend that these security forces are there for no reason, as there’s been an enormous drop in suicide bombings since the security occupation. I agree that they need to exit expeditiously, but they’re there for a reason.”

I’m teaching an all remote student class this week, so I’m working from the house. Hit a rack of ribs with my seasoning mix, 200* oven. Went in about noon, an occasional baste with some sauce, just to glaze them. Rice and some green beans finished off the dinner. Best part, plenty of leftovers.

I don’t know how to achieve that, it will take a divine intervention as far as I am concerned.

Russian Reliance on Chinese Loans May Blunt the Impact of U.S. Sanctions

LOL, I wish them luck with that.

Russia Debt Rating Cut to Step Above Junk at S&P

Russia’s sovereign debt rating was cut to the lowest investment grade at Standard & Poor’s, which said further downgrades are possible if economic growth deteriorates and the conflict in Ukraine sparks wider sanctions.

S&P cut Russia’s rating one step to BBB-, it said in a statement today. The grade, on par with Brazil and Azerbaijan, has a negative outlook. S&P last downgraded Russia in December 2008. Russia’s currency and bonds fell.

China’s appetite for Russian debt is going to be very, very finite, at least as an aboveboard investment. This has all the hallmarks of a predatory Mafia loan, and when Russia can’t repay they may well end up having to repay China for years via steeply discounted oil and gas shipments, or territory in the East.

It’ll be interesting to see what the EUs reaction to today’s shoot down will be. Obama put some pretty harsh additional sanctions on Russian industry and banks yesterday. The EUs initial response was more “measured” (aka weak). Pressure will ratchet up tomorrow on the EU to match or exceed the US sanctions. The Dutch will be swinging for the fences. Merkel and Cameron will be under significant duress.

Actually they already got all the boxes. The “separatists” don’t have the means of downing planes flying that high. According to European dispatchers, it was Ukrainian fighter jets that were escorting the commercial jet and probably downed it having mistaken it for Putin’s plane, which was airborne over Eastern Europe around the same time.

Sigh.

Hillary weighs in:

4.29am BST

Hillary Clinton: EU can not stand idly by, must toughen sanctions

If the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile, as has been quite confidently suggested by US analysts, then “the equipment had to have come from Russia”, the former secretary of state Hillary Clinton has said in one of the strongest US statements about the crash yet.

She also called on the EU to increase sanctions against Russia, and join with the US in further supporting Ukraine.

“From my perspective benefit of not being in the government, if there is evidence linking Russia to this, that should inspire the Europeans to do much more on three counts. One, toughen their own sanctions. Make it very clear there has to be a price to pay. Number two, immediately accelerate efforts and announce they are doing so to find alternatives to Gazprom. You know, Russia has not diversified its economy. It is still largely dependent upon natural resources, principally gas and oil. And thirdly, do more in concert with us to support the Ukrainians. There has to be more help on their borders in order to prevent this porous border allowing Russians to go back and forth, insurgents to do the same. Do more to help their military obtain better equipment, better training. The Ukrainian military under Poroshenko has been much more focused and more successful, but nobody kids themselves.

If Russia really keeps weighing in on behalf of the insurgents, there’s a lot more that needs to be done. And to put Putin on notice that he has gone too far and we are not going to stand idly by. So Europeans have to be the ones to take the lead on this. It was a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur over European territory. There should be outrage in European capitals.”

197 Shiplord Kirel  Jul 17, 2014 10:02:24pm

Does anyone know anything about the conditions of Julian Assange’s imprisonment at the Ecuadoran embassy? Has he literally not been out of that little office flat in 2 years? I know they have converted part (probably most) of their limited floor space into an apartment for him, but other than that, can he go anywhere? Is he allowed to have guests at his leisure, say, entertaining spy groupies? Can he bring in whatever booze or other recreational materials he wants?
If he hasn’t been outside in this whole time, he might want to consider that the well designed and progressively managed Swedish prisons allow inmates fresh air and sunshine and even their own little gardens if they are so inclined. Wouldn’t that be wonderful, Julian? To trod the well maintained turf of a Swedish facility, to smell the pine trees that are no doubt nearby, to feel the sun on your face, to be able to walk, say, 50 meters without having to reverse yourself. You also wouldn’t have the constant din of London traffic just a few feet away or the constant fear that your benefactors in Quito will be voted out and you will be thrown out.

Both of the posts talk about shooting down an AN-26 military plane. I’m not sure I’d believe in the authenticity of these screen shots though - anyone can put a graphic together to make it look like somebody’s post on social media. Since the Ukrainian military has had no problem with the indiscriminate bombing of civilian targets (which has included the use of some illegal weapons), I don’t see why they would have a problem shooting down an airliner. Besides, Poroshenko’s premature statement denying any involvement of his military was to say the least unprofessional. Let the investigations take place.

Interpol fugitive, alleged sex offender, wanted in Sweden.

Wanted on a material witness warrant. He hasn’t actually been charged with anything.

His friends have reported that he told them he did have an agreement with the Swedish prosecutors to return for more questioning later. His breaking of that promise is why they’re pissed off.

It’s really stupid of him. I’m not sure how Swedish law works exactly, and I do know their sexual assault laws are much stronger, but logic dictates that the case can’t be that strong or he’d already be charged officially. His reluctance to go back and answer questions after agreeing to go back and do so only tends to make him look guiltier than his actual legal position ostensibly indicates.

His publicly espoused fear of extradition to the US is just more of the same, and it’s so stupid. He’s letting the seemingly very thin odds both of an actual conviction in Sweden and of a US prosecution ever occurring keep him locked up as a de facto prisoner in that embassy.

Daily Show host Jon Stewart mocked Republican lawmakers on Thursday for talking tough in referring to President Barack Obama as a “tyrant,” but never following up on their repeated insistence that he should be impeached out of fear it would only push more of the electorate against them.

“That’s how you know all this talk of tyranny is bullsh*t,” he said. “When your main concern when you’re deposing a tyrant is how it will affect your party’s chances in the upcoming midterm elections, that’s not tyranny.”

What made the latest round of GOP trash-talking interesting, Stewart noted, was that it seemed to stem from “word sausages” from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), who referred to the increase in undocumented immigrants from Central America as “the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ‘No mas.’”

“If I may, it appears ex-Governor Palin has finally finished with mangling the English language, and has moved on to making Spanish incomprehensible,” Stewart explained. “She’s like a serial killer of language. Or whatever the opposite of a Rosetta Stone is.”

So, perusing Teh Twitters this afternoon, I came across this RT from our friend Prudence:

The link points to an editorial in Investor’s Business Daily, which riffs off a report by ABC News. As you can expect, the IBD editorial plays up the “OMG! Alien-borne diseases! We’re all gonna die!!” angle, while completely ignoring the latter half of the ABC report saying there’s really nothing to worry about. The doctors have things under control.

“My biggest concerns are with the health of these children,” said Richard Besser, ABC News’ chief health and medical editor. “They are victims going through incredibly stressful circumstances and some will have health issues that need to be treated. Some come from countries that don’t vaccinate against pneumonia or meningitis. They need those vaccines. Some come from countries where it is flu season. They need that vaccine, too. The big health risks are among these children, not to our communities.”

Yup. And anti-immigration groups have used the same language against the Irish, the Jews, the Japanese, the Chinese, Eastern Europeans … you name it.

The fact is, even according to the sensationalized ABC report I cited, these children are not carrying any diseases into the US that present an imminent danger to the health of American citizens. Most people have a greater chance of getting sick by visiting a friend or loved one in the hospital.

Alarmists painted immigrants—children included—as disease-ridden job stealers bent on destroying the American way of life. And they’re still at it. On a CNN segment about the current crisis of child migrants from Central and South America, Michele Bachmann used the word “invaders” and warned of rape and other dangers posed to Americans by the influx. And last week, National Review scoffed at appeals to American ideals of compassion and charity, claiming Ellis Island officials had a strict send-‘em-back policy when it came to children showing up alone.

They didn’t. Not then, and not now.

A while back while arguing with a RWNJ on a different topic, I found this gem of a page:

Nazi racial ideology was religious, creationist and opposed to Darwinism

A couple of quotes which will send chills down your spine:

“The liberal epoch brought enormous desolation in the church domain. This was precipitated by its many pseudoscientific beliefs such as evolution. […] The tragic thing about the spiritual history of the last hundred years is that the churches have made the liberal materialistic outlook their own. […] Thus the Darwinian era was able to create enormous confusion.”

— Alfred Rosenberg, NSDAP ideologue

“We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit … We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past years.”

— The Speeches of Adolf Hitler, 1922-1939, Vol. 1 (London, Oxford University Press, 1942), pg. 871-872

Although the block article does have a slight anti-Christian bias, it paints a good picture of the convergence of religion and politics in the Third Reich, and how the Nazi’s co-opted Christianity to do their horrible deeds. The co-opted version even had a flag:

The Flag of Deutsche Christen, Nazi-coopted version of Christianity

I have gotten quite some bit of “that is a lib lie” “that’s cultural marxist propaganda” “that’s gay propaganda” and worse responses from wingnuts when posting select quotes from the article in a chat, showing how the rightwing ideology matches that of Nazism in terms of hatred of atheism, creationism and anti-evolutionism.

And I’m sure the rabbit hole goes much deeper if anyone is willing to do the research.

What I find most chilling is that they engage in dehumanizing rhetoric much like the Nazis would. That’s something I refuse to do myself. I hate the RWNJs and what they stand for but I can and will not deny someone their humanity. So it naturally makes me ill to see people from Middle Eastern Muslims to immigrants whose sole crime is simply trying to make a better life for their families called vermin, parasite, etc.

I am hesitant about this, but sometimes when I observe the wingnuts in the US, what they say, how they behave… It is so familiar for me, I’ve seen it all before.

I come from Finland, which paid deerly for siding with the Nazis during WWII. Many of us learn from an early age to recognize fascism in whatever guise it may come. And it wasn’t longer ago than October last year our special forces had to deal with one of many surprises the nasty Nazis left behind when we ran them out of our country.

… “The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored because it cannot survive their being repeated” …

— Justice Robert Jackson, Opening Address for the US Prosecution, Nürnberg trials.

Wise words indeed. Maybe it is time to acknowledge that what walks like a duck and talks like a duck very likely is a duck, and call the wingnuts out on the monster they are trying to revive.

We know from several instances in 20th century history that it does not end well, and in an nuclear age, we as a species might not survive the mistake of letting the monster wake up again.

American Christians (and, truthfully, Christians the world over) don’t want to acknowledge the religious overtones of the Nazi ideology. They’d rather pretend Hitler was a Darwin fetishist and paper over the fact that the Roman Catholic church actively aided the escape of Nazi war criminals. It’s a black mark on our record that we don’t own up to it and come out in opposition to the way the Nazis twisted our religious beliefs to support their horrific actions.

Christie voiced his support in response to a question from an attendee at a meet-and-greet event in Marion, Iowa, where Christie was campaigning for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R). The Democratic research super PAC American Bridge caught the exchange on video.

“Do I support the Supreme Court decision in the Hobby Lobby case? I do,” Christie said, according to the video posted by American Bridge.

“Do you support Hobby Lobby’s position on birth control for its employees?” the attendee pressed.

“Well I just said I support the case, so if I support the case and they support the Hobby Lobby—” Christie said before moving on to greet other attendees.

Greets and saluts from the gloriously sunny NYC metro area. It’s a wonderful morning here, in stark contrast to the events unfolding half a world away over the past 24+ hours in both Gaza and Ukraine.

While Israel’s ground incursion into Gaza to deal with Hamas has been expected (though I thought that they’d hold off), the ongoing incessant rocket attacks by Hamas against Israel required the Israeli government to take further action despite the fact that Hamas has done very little damage overall.

The situation in Ukraine, however, was a bolt from the blue. The downing of the Malaysian jet took everyone by surprise, but it’s no surprise that the Russians and Ukrainians are both playing the event in their ongoing propaganda war against the other. Russia is busy claiming that it wouldn’t have happened had Ukraine acceded to separatist (and Russian demands), all while Russia essentially ignores 20 years of border integrity between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainians, meanwhile are pointing the finger at the separatists who have been fighting against the government in Kiev.

Now, the world mourns the loss of AIDS researchers who were on the way to a major conference along with more than 200 others who were disinterested parties and were not involved in the fight.

The questions that have yet to be answered are numerous, including who actually fired on the plane, how they obtained the weapons capable of downing the jet at 33,000+ feet, and whether this signals a new and more dangerous phase in the fighting in Ukraine all while bringing the risk of an open fight between Russia and Ukraine even closer to a dangerous reality.

So, with all that in mind, you’ve got conspiracy theorists already hard at work - one claiming that it was Ukraine that was the one who fired on the plane, thinking that they were going after a plane that was carrying Putin that was supposedly in the area.

Imagine my shock that Matthew Keys, Alex Jones, and Russia Today were among those involved.

I’m suspecting that NJ will be happy to see Christie gone, particularly in a failed WH bid.

From the WashPost this morning—

The West has charged Russia with sending increasingly sophisticated weapons into eastern Ukraine. As recently as Wednesday, when Obama announced stepped-up sanctions against Moscow, officials cited extensive surveillance showing new Russian arms shipments and additional Russian troops deployed to the border.

U.S. officials said Thursday that analysts at the CIA and other intelligence agencies were scrutinizing intercepted communications, satellite imagery and other information in an effort to determine who fired the missile that struck the Malaysian aircraft.

The officials noted that the conflict has been an area of intense focus for U.S. spy agencies, which have stepped up efforts to monitor communications among rebel units as well as aerial surveillance to track positions of Russian-backed forces and their weapons.

In the wake of the crash, officials said, U.S. analysts were working to retrace the path of the missile and reviewing signals intercepts for telltale reactions or admissions among separatist units.

I once made a pretty passionate speech to the admins at my son’s school about bullies. It’s not just the kid on the receiving end that is hurt. If the bully is allowed to continue, it damages who they are. Sometimes to the point where it’s either not repairable or the will to be repaired is destroyed. I’m a rape and domestic abuse survivor, I know all about escalation and how unhealthy it is. Of course my little speech wasn’t taken seriously, one asshole was checking his phone the whole time, but I said what I had to say.

Violence ISN’T HEALTHY. Period. For anyone. I’m an advocate for fighting back if you have to (in my case, a hammer worked pretty well), but even in self defense it has a negative effect. I also don’t buy that humans are just violent either. I’ve worked with kids as a teacher’s aide and preschool teacher. Violence is learned.

re: #296 darthstar

Yeah, that’s McCain.

Here’s an idea, however…..if indeed pro-Russian separatists did this - and I’m pretty damned sure they did - then put Russia on the US State Department’s list of ‘State Sponsors of Terrorism’.

That unhappy designation includes the following actions:

1. A ban on arms-related exports and sales.
2. Controls over exports of dual-use items, requiring 30-day Congressional notification for goods or services that could significantly enhance the terrorist-list country’s military capability or ability to support terrorism.
3. Prohibitions on economic assistance.
4. Imposition of miscellaneous financial and other restrictions, including:

Requiring the United States to oppose loans by the World Bank and other international financial institutions;
Lifting diplomatic immunity to allow families of terrorist victims to file civil lawsuits in U.S. courts;
Denying companies and individuals tax credits for income earned in terrorist-listed countries;
Denial of duty-free treatment of goods exported to the United States;
Authority to prohibit any U.S. citizen from engaging in a financial transaction with a terrorist-list government without a Treasury Department license; and
Prohibition of Defense Department contracts above $100,000 with companies controlled by terrorist-list states.

When the Russian government formally disavows the Novorossiya separatists and indeed, makes efforts to bring them to justice in front of, let’s say, the International Criminal Court in The Hague, then Russia will be removed from the list.

That should do the trick pretty nicely.

Some trigger-happy Russian thought he was shooting down a Ukrainian cargo plane and nailed a Malaysian Airlines 777 instead. Killed 298 people, including 23 US citizens (if the actual passenger list matches the ticket count). The Russian separatists initially admitted to shooting down a plane, but went on a Twitter deleting spree as soon as they realized they’d shot down someone else’s civilian airliner. Now Russia and Ukraine are pointing fingers at each other and it’s a whole big ugly mess.

re: #348 FemNaziBitch

Would someone be really nice to me (because it’s morning) and give me the skinny on the Malaysia Airplane downing?

A ML flight was shot down over the eastern Ukraine - killing 295 people.

The Ukraine government says it was the separatists, probably with explicit or implicit Russian help.

The separatists, after crowing yesterday in tweets about downing a Ukrainian military transport at roughly that time, and saying they had an operational BUK system, deleted the tweets and claimed the Ukrainians did it since they don’t have a missile system capable of it.

The Russians say that the Ukrainians are responsible since it happened over the Ukraine. And, of course, that there is trouble in the region because they refused to roll over and let Russia occupy them without a fuss.

A ML flight was shot down over the eastern Ukraine - killing 295 people.

The Ukraine government says it was the separatists, probably with explicit or implicit Russian help.

Speaking of American Christians…not so Christ-like.

I was watching this show Who the Bleep Did I Marry? and this guy beat, raped, choked his wife and she finally had enough and he got jail time. CA requires her to pay spousal support - for which she got a “rape discount” in paying less than the norm, and took her case to Sacramento and got the law changed. But this is the woman hating, “Christian” take on it.

You’re the one that should apologize, you twat. You cost the city and local economy $50m, and forced a BAPTIST charity organization to abandon their good-intentioned plans of helping children in need.

I guess if you want a wingnut to care about you, you should remain a fetus. As long as you’re in the womb, they will literally kill to save you (How’s that for “pro-life”). But once you’re umbilical cord is cut, screw you, you nasty little free-loading brown person.

Americans Are Leaving Religion Behind and It Scares the Hell Out of the Christian Right

Take Fox News host Gretchen Carlson in an interview with WorldNetDaily, where she explained why she felt the need to participate in a Christian right movie called “Persecuted” that laughably posits that there’s some kind of attack on the right of American Christians to practice their faith. Carlson argued that Christians are being persecuted by not being able to foist their faith on others, complaining about “petitions at state governors’ offices during the Christmas season to put up a ‘Festivus pole’ - from the made-up holiday of ‘Festivus’ from the ‘Seinfeld’ TV show - next to a Christian crèche on public lands.” She also bemoaned the disappearance of crèches around town during Christmas, implying that her neighbors have an obligation to decorate for Christmas so that she and her kids feel satisfied that their beliefs are still dominant.

Yeah, it’s Paged.

You broke it. You bought it.

It was Gateway Pundit that claimed it was a $50 million luxury resort for illegals.

It was nothing of the sort. He and that guest “poster” implied and explicitly claimed it was a luxury resort - both in the headlines and text.

It was nothing of the sort. It was never going to be anything of that sort.

It was his dishonest smears that led DCFS to kill the proposal, along with the $50 million in economic benefits to the area. For all the talk about jobs, that dishonest smear killed jobs. Weslaco deserves an apology for this nonsense from Jim. They’re the ones who got screwed by this smear, along with the people who would have been served by this charitable group who has done good work across a wide range of missions worldwide to care for the needy.

I got into a long argument with a couple of Facebook wingnuts yesterday, and they completely refused to acknowledge that it’s kids we’re talking about here. To a person, they would only call them ‘illegals.’

I called them out on it repeatedly and told them that their refusal to acknowledge them as children was a dodge to mask their complete lack of compassion for children. It’s absolutely stunning to me that they are so blinded by their need to bash Obama that they completely dehumanize innocents, but I guess I should have expected nothing different.

Their indifference to the suffering of children is horrific, and they have zero claim to any moral high ground on this one. None.

Man, my gonads pulled up just looking at that. Obviously he was just letting them lie out in the open, letting the fuses, explosives and propellant deteriorate.

That was a disaster waiting to happen. A couple of those weapons are, I believe, incendiary bombs from WWII. An explosion would have spread thermite and white phosphorous all over the neighbourhood.

I’m glad the police got hold of this stuff. I don’t envy the Bomb Disposal people that have to clean up this mess.

There may very well (most likely) have been American AIDS activists and researchers en route to Melbourne. But, they also most likely would have gathered in/near California and proceeded to Melbourne that route. Doesn’t make sense to travel from the US to Europe to get to Australia
