Rebels turn away OSCE observers

Rebels have turned away the OSCE team at the crash site, Harriet Salem (@HarrietSalem) reports for the Guardian in Grabovo.

She says the OSCE delegation has been turned away without being able to inspect the site. A unit of heavily armed rebels blocked the 30-strong team, cordoning off a large part of the crash site. The inspectors retreated after an hour-long stand-off.

AIDS conference attendees on downed Malaysian jet

SYDNEY — Researchers and activists heading to an AIDS conference in Australia were on the Malaysian jetliner shot down over Ukraine, news that sparked an outpouring of grief across the scientific community.

Among the passengers were former president of the International AIDS Society Joep Lange, a well-known researcher from the Netherlands, and Worth Health Organization spokesman Glenn Thomas, based in Geneva.

[…]

A precise number of passengers who were bound for the conference could not immediately be determined. The 20th International AIDS conference starts Sunday in the Victoria state capital of Melbourne.

Ugh.

Another example to the world that Russia is still not open and ready to join in with the west in how things are done. Putin is going to come out of this looking even smaller than he is physically.

5 months after the Winter Olympics and any good feelings he gained are all being wiped away. Hopefully some how the Russian peoples take this as a sign it is time to get Putin out. If that can even be done, as I don’t know how things work politically in the New Russia.

That would entail direct Russian military complicity in the downing of MH17, and if an investigation reveals that, well……things could get interesting at that point.

Even though it may well have been an accident, nonetheless, things could get dicey for Putin real fast at that point.

There’s no doubt that it was an “accident” in the sense of not intending to shoot down a civilian airliner. The fact is, though, someone deliberately fired an anti-aircraft missile that killed 300 innocent people, and that isn’t going to end well no matter whether it has official Russian backing or plausible deniability.

I dont think anyone has suggested that shooting down a passenger plane was a deliberate goal. However, the firing of the missile was intentional and most likely had some measure of Russian support.

Reagan and KAL 007

True, the president’s nationally televised address on Sept. 5 was full of strong rhetorical condemnation: Reagan called the Soviet action “monstrous,” “murderous,” and “born of a society which wantonly disregards individual rights and the value of human life.”

But little action followed. Reagan demanded an apology to the world and continued a number of sanctions — but he decided not to end grain sales to the USSR or to suspend arms control talks. George Will argued that “the administration is pathetic…. We didn’t elect a dictionary. We elected a President and it’s time for him to act.” The Manchester Union-Leader editorialized that “if someone had told us three years ago that the Russians could blow a civilian airliner out of the skies - and not face one whit of retaliation from a Ronald Reagan administration, we would have called that crazy. It is crazy. It is insane. It is exactly what happened.”

Even at the height of the Cold War, however — and keeping in mind that the flight had departed from the U.S., with dozens of American passengers, including a sitting member of Congress - Reagan told a National Security Meeting that “we’ve got to protect against overreaction. Vengeance isn’t the name of the game.”

Reagan was right. Allen West is wrong and he is nuts.

Wojtek

Wojtek (1942-1963; Polish pronunciation: [ˈvɔjtɛk]) usually spelled Voytek in English, was a Syrian brown bear cub found in Iran and adopted by soldiers of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish II Corps. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, Wojtek helped move ammunition. The name “Wojtek” is a diminutive form of “Wojciech”, an old Slavic name that is still common in Poland today and means “he who enjoys war” or “smiling warrior”.[1]

Reagan was right. Allen West is wrong and he is nuts.

Slightly OT, but here’s another case where Ronny Reagan did nothing after a United States Army Major was shot by Soviet guards and left to bleed to death while on an official military liaison program:

At a subsequent meeting between General Otis and General Mikhail Zaitsev, the commander of Group of Soviet Forces Germany, General Otis made it clear that the U.S. Army believed that Nicholson’s murder “[was] officially condoned, if not directly ordered.” Following this, a Soviet diplomat was ordered out of the U.S. and the U.S. canceled plans to jointly celebrate the 40th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe with the Soviets.[6] The incident was also the first major foreign policy crisis faced by Mikhail Gorbachev as leader of the Soviet Union. The relatively muted U.S. response drew criticism from various sources, among them George Will.[1]
