Russia Today’s Sara Firth Resigns Over MH17 Coverage

Another of RT’s propaganda babes bails out
Media • Views: 38,307

Another one of Russia Today’s “correspondents” resigned today: Russia Today Correspondent Sara Firth Resigns Over Coverage of Ukrainian Plane Crash.

Firth, who joined the channel in 2009, told BuzzFeed that she decided to resign from the Kremlin-funded news channel because she felt it was “disrespectfully” attempting to pin the blame for Thursday’s Malaysia Airlines disaster on the Ukrainian government.

“When this story broke I ran back into the newsroom and saw how we were covering it already and I just knew I had to go,” she said.

“It was the total disregard to the facts. We threw up eyewitness accounts from someone on the ground openly accusing the Ukrainian government [of involvement in the disaster], and a correspondent in the studio pulled up a plane crash before that the Ukrainian government had been involved in and said it was ‘worth mentioning’.

“It’s not worth mentioning. It’s Russia Today all over, it’s flirting with that border of overtly lying. You’re not telling a lie, you’re just bringing something up. I didn’t want to watch a story like that, where people have lost loved ones and we’re handling it like that.

“I couldn’t do it any more. Every single day we’re lying and finding sexier ways to do it.”

Uh, well, yeah. Good on Sara Firth for finally doing the right thing, but let’s face the facts: anyone who willingly goes to work for Russia Today knows what they’re getting into — the agenda is not exactly hidden — and they do it to advance their careers, truth be damned. These sudden attacks of conscience look more like belated concern for their own reputations.

I imagine most of RT staffers are eager hacks who got laughed out of getting real journalism jobs and are just so happy to be “in the business”, they willingly parrot what ever they’re told. Whenever one of them notices they’re nothing but a dupe, its nice, but you have to think “Well, duh. What took you so long?”

And yet it’s still amazing to me to see people who consider RT a legitimate news outlet and now blatant Kremlin propaganda.

Maybe they just don’t want to see that.

Weren’t the nutters screaming yesterday about the State Department saying nothing about the 23 American victims?

So they basically made up the 23 Americans dead, then got outraged over it

Even if there were 23 Americans, DOS would contact all the next of kin before releasing the names to the public.

For sure. Even if 23 Americans had been booked on the flight, the State Dept would make damn sure to track them down and verify that they had been on the plane at the time before issuing a statement

Actually, I think that claim originally came from the Ukrainian Interior Ministry:

The nationalities of those murdered doesn’t mean squat. Even if there were 100 Americans on board it wouldn’t make the tragedy any greater than it already is.

Well, did you hear that the White House put out a photo of Obama talking on the phone with Vlad, and Obama’s sleeves were rolled up? That was done to make it look like Obama was really working hard—I mean, really taking it seriously. His sleeves were rolled up while on the phone with Putin! From WaPo today:

RT distinguishes itself from many U.S. media outlets in its willingness to address staff defections. Anna Belkina, RT’s head of communications, sent these words, among others, about Firth’s resignation:

Sara has declared that she chooses the truth; apparently we have different definitions of truth. We believe that truth is what our reporters see on the ground, with their own eyes, and not what’s printed in the morning London newspaper. In our coverage, RT, unlike the rest of the media, did not draw conclusions before the official investigation has even begun. We show all sides of the story, even if everyone else has already decided which side is to blame.

When the Erik Wemple Blog read that statement to Firth over the phone, she short-circuited for a moment. “Oh my gosh, it’s amazing — what is the right word for it even? That’s what’s so crazy about RT, this idea that they have about versions of the truth. They took an eyewitness account and blamed the Ukrainian government” very early, she said. “It’s all about pointing fingers for them and manipulating the truth.”

Key Graf, which should warm the heart of John Wheaton, who was quoted:

Well, actually, as John Wheaton notes in his reply at LGF,
Yes, it is entirely your fault, because nowhere in your article do you point out that BCFS was planning to renovate the facility, which would mean all the “luxury resort” amenities would be gone. (Hint: the Palm Aire is a 3-star tourist hotel, NOT a resort.) No, instead, you implied (falsely) that the immigrants were going to be housed in a luxury resort worth $50 million, paid for entirely with government funds. That’s certainly what your screaming headline would lead the casual reader to conclude.

The Neturei Karta (the nutters who protest in all the anti-Israel demonstrations) are the Jewish equivalent of the Westboro, but there are actually only a few dozen of them.

The Satmar are a very large Hasidic sect which some of the Neturei Karta belong to, but most Satmar are not NK.

I think Haredim should serve in the IDF (like my son) but since so many of them are fundamentalist wingnuts, does the IDF really need huge numbers of them WITH GUNS?

BTW not to disparage all Haredi Jews, I am Haredi and so is @JihadiJew.

re: #91 Backwoods_Sleuth

It was a June 2013 protest against changes to the Israeli mandatory service law that had previously excluded the Haredi from military service. They had nothing to do with protesting against Israel.

Of course, because the usual klatch of Neturei Karta nitwits up at the front row with their usual signs against Israel, the anti-Israel kooks will claim that the gathering was all about Orthodox Jews all being against Israel.

The airlines balk on upgrading their plane navigation systems so that they can do NEXTGEN, which would save everyone time and money in the long run for direct routing, but now we’re supposed to believe that the threat from flying through war zones (which doesn’t describe the US btw) is so bad that we need to install anti-missile tech on all civilian airlines.

Israel installed countermeasures on its flights, but that’s because those planes are the official airlines of a country whose citizens, property, and territory is under constant threat and attacks occur all too frequently. It’s not an insubstantial cost either.

In fact, Israel appears to have installed a system that got the FAA concerned because of a fire risk (flare system against infrared (heat) signature sensors). Another system is called C-Music.

Note too that the system that the Israelis have installed is largely to defend against MANPADs, not the system that appears to have brought down the Malaysian jet.

So those pictures of the place that the morons are posting are old then? If so, the first things to go to shit would be the pool and the spa areas. My husband does this stuff as part of his job, all it takes is a few days of not attending to a pool or spa properly and things go bad and become unsafe quickly. That doesn’t even take into account how well the buildings are maintained, which I’m guessing isn’t great or it wouldn’t be considered a crappy motel in the first place. Not to mention that the words “motel” and “luxury resort” don’t really match up.

Plus who pays for it. Airlines don’t want to - it takes up weight and maintenance time and reduces their profit margins further. So it would be a federal subsidy, further passenger fees, or something like that. And that’s assuming you find a worthwhile defense system that can handle a SAM system designed to shoot down cruise missiles and military attack aircraft.

So it boils down to emotional blathering in the heat of the moment.

Quite true. The El Al systems are primarily detector/jammers designed to counter simple infra-red homing missiles, primarily manpads but including some larger types like the Chapparal or SA-13. They would have no effect on a radar based system like the Buk/SA-11. Nobody is going to equip a civilian aircraft with radar countermeasures systems, even ignoring the exorbitant cost and security risk.
It is disturbing to see that a member of Congress is so ignorant about basic facts.

There’s a great piece over on Global Voices listing the various Russian explanations/dismissals of responsibility for the destruction of MH17.

http://globalvoicesonline.org/2014/07/18/russia-mh17-ukraine-crash/

Reads like they’ve been studying the wingnut playbook - deny, obfuscate, attempt to draw false equivalency when confronted with the evidence of wrongdoing.

Number 1 on the list:

“In that case, we didn’t do it.
The self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Aleksandr Boroday, was curiously unsure about rebel involvement in the incident:

К сожалению, цитата дня pic.twitter.com

— reeD (@reedmagofficial) July 17, 2014
Unfortunately, this is the quote of the day. [Caption reads, “If it is really a commercial airliner, then it wasn’t us,” Alexandr Boroday.]”

…but if it was another Ukrainian military plane, than it WAS us and is just further evidence of the imminent victory of our glorious cause.

It’s from a demonstration back in March against Israeli conscription.

They were in the wrong then, too.

The whole reason Israel gave those exemptions to talmudic scholars is because at the time there were so very few of them left in the world, their field of study needed repopulation. 65 years later, not a problem. (plus… 95% of them really aren’t very good at it.)

President Barack Obama plans to sign on Monday a long-awaited executive order prohibiting discrimination against LGBT people by federal contractors, and it will not include the broad religious exemption sought by religious leaders.

The Huffington Post reported on Friday that Obama’s order will add sexual orientation and gender identity to an existing non-discrimination order that covers race, sex and religion. A White House official confirmed the report to TPM. It will not include any general religious exemption for religious employers.

The order does, however, maintain an executive order by President George W. Bush that allows religious employers to prioritize hiring members of their religion, according to the official.

For fairness, the phlawless physicists at Mythbusters did their best to create a catastrophic decompression. Shots through the aircraft skin did very little more than make a whistle. IIRC, a couple rounds into a window blew it out, but even then the curved frame shape prevented a rupture. That produced rapid but survivable decompression.

Kremlin-backed insurgents now claim Malaysia Airlines plane was carrying corpses

The statements of Girkin posted on his Vkontakte page on July 18 appeared to be a lot more confusing.

According to Girkin, the plane’s passengers were already dead when the plane went down.

“I just talked to two people who were gathering corpses, both from Shakhtarsk (the city where the plane crashed) so they came to the spot only 30 minutes after the tragedy. I am writing from their words. They said many corpses were totally bloodless and looked like blood had clotted long before the catastrophe,” the leader of Russian backed insurgents wrote.

But hey, let’s not let facts get in the way here. Idiots.

Downstairs somebody posted the break down on the property, at the 4 million listed price the land was worth significantly more than the buildings. It strikes me as 4 million for that much building and facilities means that it must need some significant repairs and updating.

Oh right I agree completely. There is just a little reality check on a gunshot in a plane. They got pistols with real bullets, not tasers or rubber bullet guns. So if a marshal draws on a bad guy on a plane I’m on I’m way more afraid of the bad guy causing a crash than a bullet that exits the roof.

The most obvious thing missing from the Mythbusters experiment was harmonic effects and aerodynamic forces. Decompression of a static airframe on the ground can’t account for the effects of 500+ mph outside air speed whistling by the puncture.

You get a very low energy but totally annoying version of the problem in your left ear when driving a car on the highway and your passenger cracks their window. It’s like living inside a bass flute. Now scale up the scale of the problem by a few hundred passengers who suddenly need oxygen in a hurry and find their inner ears shot to shit from both the decompression and the following resonance completely fucking up their equilibrium. Even if the plane doesn’t come apart it’s one of the last place anybody wants to be.

Microsoft has made a number of big blunders since the release of Windows 7. Everybody in the industry (well, except for the MS fanboys) saw this coming.

Are corporate HR assholes still terrorizing their workforces with Who Moved My Cheese readings? That shit was my favorite.

We had a GM who was into that whole thing. He also had horrible inter-personal skills. He started off our monthly “all employees” meeting (there are only 40 or so of us” like this:

You all are the greatest group I’ve ever worked with. You guys set the standards the other centers try to meet. You guys are GREAT.

We all felt good for about 3 seconds, before he followed it up with:
And don’t forget, anyone of you could be replaced at any time.

Lets just say that sort of mixed message went over really well. We got the last laugh, about a year later, he and the sales manager did the ‘walk of shame’ with the owner after he fired them and escorted them from the building for falsifying sales invoices to meet goal.

Not sure what kind of pressure the airline industry can put on “him”. People will still need/ want to fly in and out of every major Russian city. The airlines aren’t going to suspend their flights. They will (or at the very least,, should) do what the FAA suggested to American carriers. That they avoid flying over/ near the areas of conflict.

Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.), who spent the weekend visiting Honduras and Guatemala with six other members of Congress, reaffirmed his belief on Wednesday that the ongoing humanitarian crisis along the southern border is to send migrants home—even though he found his host city too dangerous to go outside.

[…]

So to recap: Tegucigalpa is too dangerous for grown members of Congress to leave their downtown hotel rooms, but a perfectly fine place to send an eight-year-old kid. (According to a press release, the congressional delegation did leave their hotel to visit an outreach center funded by the US government. They also met with the president and first lady of Honduras.) Meanwhile, not content with the results of Pearce’s investigation, a rival Congressional delegation, led by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), is en route to Central America now. We’ll see if they find it safe enough to walk around.

Until now, the Netherlands was among the European countries that were least inclined to challenge Russia. But in the wake of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 disaster, which claimed 192 Dutch lives when felled by a surface-to-air missile on Thursday, the Dutch government now faces pressure to toughen its position toward Moscow. Pro-Russia separatists are suspected of using a missile possibly supplied by Russia to down the flight. To do so, however, the Netherlands must reverse a policy that favored its economic interests over all other considerations.

Like many other European countries, the Netherlands depends on Russian oil and gas imports for much of its energy needs, but the Dutch case is particularly acute: No other European country had as high a trade deficit with Russia in 2012, and the Netherlands has also positioned itself as a tax shelter for Russia’s billionaires.

But after an attack that claimed a higher proportion of its citizens than the United States lost on Sept. 11 2001, can the Netherlands afford to maintain the status quo in respect to Russia?

Shifting energy politics may also play a role in Amsterdam’s response. The Gate liquefied natural gas terminal, located near Rotterdam, currently operates at just 10 percent of its present capacity. A large increase in maritime natural gas imports would help insulate The Netherlands from a drop in Russian supply. This, as much as satisfying the public thirst for justice, may be the main factor in shaping how Holland reacts to Thursday’s plane crash.

Russia has seriously shit the bed here. They were facing a grim economic outlook before the invasion of Crimea. Now after two rounds of sanctions they’ve gone and seriously pissed off not only a substantial export market and economic shelter, but pretty much the entire remainder of the European sub-continent and the nearly all of Oceania.

The damage from this epic level blunder and Putin’s colossally inept response thus far is like the calving of a gigantic ice sheet. The crack is there and the damage is now totally irreversible, all that’s left is the long, slow, inevitable slide into the sea.

Current plan is this:

She has a sister in NJ- I am planning to go to NYC around the second week of August. Meet her sister there while there for a small convention. I want to thank someone. (As an aside, I will want Lawhawks and CL’s help with stuff with this one later).

Then, her sister would come out her with her husband to meet me.

Then I go to Iran in January to meet her family, followed by her coming to the US to meet mine in June or July.

aaaand on that note, Dreher is melting down over Obama being expected to sign an executive order banning discrimination against GLBT people for federal contractors. The order will not contain a clause exempting religious contractors.

of course… This is tranny gay tyranny and it iz time fer Christians to use teh “Benedict Option” and go to our version of Galt’s Gulch!

theamericanconservative.com

Today, the president signaled his intention to refuse. And so Christian and other religious groups that receive federal money to do things like feed the poor will have to decide between Christ and Caesar. The march to progress continues. Traditional religious believers are pushed ever more fully out of the public square. Your president, speaking on behalf of your government, thinks you are too tainted by bigotry to be trusted with government contracts.

I’ve been telling y’all for years now that the advance of gay rights will come at the expense of religious liberty. This is a prime example. Note that the pro-Obama religious leaders weren’t asking Obama not to issue the executive order banning discrimination against gays in federal contracting; they were only asking for tolerance for religious organizations that serve the public good, but cannot for reasons of religious principle obey the new dictate. There will be no toleration. Error has no rights.

I have never seen a more determined example of chilice tightening, martyrdom seeking, self flagellating victimhood.

Snowden bombshell.

NSA contractors were into porn.

You’ve got young enlisted guys, 18 to 22. They’ve suddenly thrust into a position of extraordinary responsibility, where they now have access to all of your private records. Now, in the course of their daily work, they stumble across something that is completely unrelated to their work in any sort of necessary sense. For example: an intimate nude photo of someone in a sexually compromising situation, but they’re extremely attractive. So what do they do? They turn around in their chair, and they show their coworker. And their coworker says, “Oh, hey, that’s great. Send that to Bill down the way. And then Bill sends it to George, George sends it to Tom, and sooner or later, this person’s whole life has been seen by all of these other people. It’s never reported. Nobody ever knows about it, because the auditing of these systems is incredibly weak.

Yeah, just stumbled across nudies. And then sent across to coworkers.

Again, this is on his say-so. Is this plausible? Yeah, it’s plausible. But server logs would track who is seeing what and when. Email/txts would be logged on the system, etc.

If this happened as frequently as he says, there’d be all kinds of records.

How come there’s none of that in his documents that he took? Where’s his evidence.

I’m reminded of how Manfred von Richthofen had a little silver victory cup made up each time he shot someone down:

After his first confirmed victory, Richthofen contacted a jeweller in Berlin and ordered a silver cup engraved with the date and the type of enemy aircraft.[d] He continued this until he had 60 cups, by which time the dwindling supply of silver in blockaded Germany meant that silver cups like this could no longer be supplied. Richthofen discontinued his orders at this stage, rather than accept cups made in pewter or other base metal

That reminds me of a stinker I just saw elsewhere.

353 Aunty Entity Dragon  Jul 18, 2014 4:47:03pm

Jesus, and I thought I had a bad few weeks…

John Cole at Balloon Juice has been trying to get into a rehab facility for alcohol.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to deal with addiction and get treatment in America? I have gold plated insurance, am comfortably middle class, and I have been going through sheer hell trying to get into a facility. It’s almost like you have to show up with a syringe full of heroin dangling from your arm and a crack pipe in your mouth to get anyone to take you seriously.

A while back, I went to my general practitioner and tried to get into a rehab facility. He was caught off guard and sent me to some place which was basically a level 4 detox facility (this meant nothing to me when I was first told it). Regardless, I had made the plans, packed my bags, gone to go be admitted, and the doctor there told me there was no way in hell he was admitting me because this was a place for court ordered detox of people who were in a far different place than me, criminal, and basically the people drinking MD under a bridge for 30 years or smoking crack rock and holding people up at gas stations. Basically, he told me that under no circumstances was this the place for me. I’d set aside the time for work. Showed up, got rejected.

Spent another couple months trying to get a place that was right, covered by insurance, and amenable to my time schedule. Found a place in Ft. Myers, Florida, and was getting ready to go, but then they flaked out on me and would never send me proof that my insurance would cover it. I’m not jumping into that kind of scam, especially in Rick Scott’s Florida. Not to mention, I sweat in a meat locker, and Ft. Myers in July sounds like my own personal hell.

So then I just said fuck it. I’m just going with the VA, even though I have private insurance. It’s close, veterans (who bitch more than anyone on the planet) consistently rate their care at the VA higher than civilians rate their hospital experiences, plus there would be a comfort level there because I was around folks I understand. Spent a couple days making arrangements with people at the VA in Pitt, they told me what to bring, packed everything up, and went, thinking I was making a big step.

Guess what. In 2003, under our favorite President, for whom I voted twice, they changed the rules of eligibility. Because I am comfortably middle class and have a retirement account, even though I am a veteran with a combat patch, I am not eligible because I have too much money. At this point, I’m just like, you have to be fucking shitting me.

My friend, mom, sister and grandpa are all very supportive of me in regards to the lady in Iran.

Congrats, let me go dig through your history but I know lack of a lady friend has long been something that has made your life feel incomplete and so I wish you good luck and happiness!

He is that way to everybody. I have had some massive fights with him online over GLBT related issues around Obama’s first inauguration and some hideous legal briefs Obama’s people in Justice filed to defend DOMA back in 2009.

Cole can be a serious dick (hell, I haven’t always been a rose myself). I don’t post much at Balloon Juice anymore, in any event, but I thought his experience here was worth relating. My mother-in-law had very serious addiction and mental health issues, and getting her treatment was utterly impossible at times in Georgia.

While having a psychotic delusion she snuck out of the house one night naked in December while we were visiting. Local police picked her up and brought her back, and then proceeded to chew my ass for letting her out. My wife and I begged the officer to arrest her for own protection, since that way she would at least be seen by somebody.

He blew us off and drove away.
