Glenn Greenwald Smears Elizabeth Warren Using a Right Wing Attack Video

Nobody is pure enough for the Mighty G
Weird • Views: 40,345

Sometimes Glenn Greenwald does something that really brings out his true agenda — and it’s not at all related to helping advance progressive causes. The most important thing to Greenwald often seems to be simple sabotage of the democratic process, with smear tactics and ugly personal attacks the order of the day.

Today’s example is especially nasty, as Greenwald uses a video shot by a far right hatchet man to attack Senator Elizabeth Warren for not toeing his anti-Israel purity line.

This little eight second clip shows Warren walking to her next appearance at the Netroots Nation conference, when right winger Joe Schoffstall ambushes her to ask about Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Warren, obviously in a hurry, keeps on walking and doesn’t answer — and of course, the wingnuts who staged this hit piece claim she was “running away.”

The really ironic thing here is that Greenwald’s intent and the intent of the wingnut who made the video are exactly opposite. Greenwald’s trying to imply Warren isn’t pro-Palestinian enough, but the wingnut is implying she isn’t pro-Israel enough.

It’s quite amazing to see Greenwald, a purported hero of the progressive movement, attacking one of the most articulate and intelligent female voices for the progressive movement using the sleazy work of rabid right wingers — but it’s certainly not the first time Greenwald has aligned himself with the far right in order to smear and libel one of his many enemies.

By the way, here’s Sen. Warren’s official statement on Israel and Palestine: Veterans, Military Families & National Security | Elizabeth Warren for Senate

The U.S.-Israel Relationship and Middle East Peace

Since its founding more than 60 years ago, Israel and the United States have been steadfast, trusted, and reliable allies. I unequivocally support the right of a Jewish, democratic state of Israel to exist, and to be safe and secure. The U.S.-Israel relationship is rooted in shared values and common interests, based on a commitment to liberty, pluralism, and the rule of law. These values transcend time, and they are the basis of our unbreakable bond.

To me, it is a moral imperative to support and defend Israel, and I am committed to ensuring its long-term security by maintaining its qualitative military edge. Israel must be able to defend itself from the serious threats it faces from terrorist organizations to hostile states, including Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and others.

I am also a strong proponent of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which I believe to be in the interest of Israel and the United States, with a Jewish, democratic state of Israel and a state for the Palestinian people. The U.S. can and should play an active role in promoting a diplomatic resolution to the conflict that is agreed to by the parties, but I do not believe that a lasting peace can be imposed from the outside or that either party should take unilateral steps - such as the Palestinians’ application for UN membership - that move the parties further away from negotiations.

I am also deeply proud that Israel and Massachusetts are natural economic allies. Like Massachusetts, Israel has a real commitment and advantage in high-tech and innovative industries. There are approximately 100 companies in Massachusetts with Israeli founders or based on Israeli technologies - creating $2.4 billion in value and thousands of jobs for our economy.

As a United States Senator, I will work to ensure Israel’s security and success, and I will support active American leadership to help bring peace and security to Israel and the region.

That’s why Glenn Greenwald is attacking her.

I would appreciate it if more Americans would care about the Palestinians. Especially now that with all to settlement blocks, and roads that Palestinians in the West Bank can’t use. Along with restrictions on water use for Palestinians that don’t exist for Israelis.

Granted, because of the history of Deir Yassin, Couch Folkestone Bernadotte, and the Lillehammer Affair, I do have a harsher view of Israel, and I will admit that.

I’m taking that a different way. There was a time where news like this would have met with nearly unanimous screaming but that post is on the rec. list with lots of recommends. I haven’t delved to deeply but the Greenwald defenders look like the same crowd of paranoid, America hating, mouth breathing morons that one expect to see chime in, the overall tone is none too happy with Glenn.

I can’t understand why Greenwald has such a tendency to attack people who otherwise would be on his side and grow his audience rather than shrink it?

What’s sad (to me) is his supporters in that DKos thread appear, in no way, to be the government hating crowd. They love him for Snowden and all else is forgiven. Some see him on a topic by topic basis vis a vis his work. Some feel as I do, that he’s a defensive, self serving schmuck who is ways part of the story, and there is no story without him being close to the center). But far too many give him a complete pass, excusing all the stuff they’d normally completely deride him over.

Nicely put. I believe that there are at least two factors in play. One is that apostates might feel obligated to prove that they truly have changed their views. The other is that if you act too liberal you don’t get heard whereas, there doesn’t seem to be anything too excessive for a conservative.

That is one of the reasons that I LOVE NPR. I really appreciate that they do 7-10 minute pieces on a story. It allows a degree of analysis, perspective and nuance that you don’t get in standard talk radio, where it seems to be the rule that no one piece can last more than 1 minute before we cut to 3 more commercials. The last time I found myself listening to AM talk, I found it so frantic and shallow that I became angry at the radio (yea, I know…)

If I’m being honest, I don’t like that part at all. But then, sometimes I put myself in Hamas’ shoes, and I guess I sort of appreciate where they’re coming from, so it’s tough. Of course, my kids hate it—they’ve actually told me that a couple of times. Oh, well, I guess I’ll give it a couple more weeks and see how I feel about it then.”

Some difficult facts confront our President in how to move forward with Russia. After all the chain of responsibility points straight to Vladimir Putin regardless of whether s separatist or a Russian pushed the launch button.

I am always happy to see a convert who takes a moderate position but boy, it is like some former alcoholics or smokers; they are almost insufferable.

Look at some former “liberals” like David Horowitz and Michael Savage.

Or…maybe it is just the $$$.

No, I think it’s something in the personality. I’ve seen the same thing many times with religion. Some of the strictest, most dogmatic and inflexible Muslims I’ve known have been converts who were previously just as extreme, only in the opposite direction.

One day a guy’s gang banger, a crazy drugged-out musician, a hard-drinking womanizer, etc. then you turn around and suddenly he’s converted and become a scowling bearded holier-than-thou salafi who’s critical of everyone, refuses to make even the briefest eye contact with women, and demands that his wife wear not just hijab, but also niqab, etc.

It’s… weird. It’s like they’re incapable of doing anything in moderation.

She may very well have known that this guy was a wingnut hitman. He was probably harassing people all day - it’s what they do.

Agreed. Completely. And likely, too. Warren is a sharp cookie.

One of the things Dems could improve on is optics. (I’ll set aside, for the moment, the Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don’t situation.). And the optics of saying what Gus suggested (while personally loving it), creates negative optics, as shown in the intent of titling this video “Warren Runs Screaming From Answering Questions!” (sic), trying to liken her to Scott Brown literally hiding in the bathroom from journalists.

I wish we could get people on the record of their positions and look at those positions from venue to venue (I caught Bush 2 in a major contradiction in 2000 from what was in his website to what he said to a group of women, which made me say No Way to him). But on any scale that would truly matter, that would require real journalists, not partisans. And everyone it seems these days, are partisan.

There’s a broken water main under the street right in front of my shop. OK, it’s actually next door. Took 20 minutes for someone from the city to show up. I’m pretty sure it’s making a big sinkhole under the pavement. When I saw the pavement go up and down when someone ran over it, I put cones across the road.

As somebody with some knowledge in the area (some academic, most of it very hard earned and personal), that is a very common trait in people with addictive personalities. There is very little middle ground, things tend to be viewed in “Black - White” terms. Often too the individual feels that they personally have little control over their life, their locus is more externally controlled rather than internally.

Someone once commented about AA that in many cases people are just substituting 1 addiction for another. (and that may well be true, at least in people who never progress well in their recovery)

Salted roads are very bad for bikes. I’ve seen aluminum spoke nipples crumble like a cookie.

There are so many lousy QR skewers out there, it’s shocking. And Trek is recalling a fork because the dropouts break, then another manufacturer who used the same fork had to explain that it’s not the fork, it’s the skewers Trek was using with them. This isn’t the first time Griftwald has cited wingnut sources to smear Democrats.

He’s a big #BENGHAZI Truther.

For a full week now, administration officials have categorically insisted that the prime, if not only, cause of the attack was spontaneous anger over the anti-Muhammad film, The Innocence of Muslims.

***

To date, numerous people believe - as though there were no dispute about it - that Muslims attacked the consulate and killed the US ambassador “because they were angry about a film”.

As it turns out, this claim is almost certainly false.

***

To the contrary, most evidence from the start strongly suggested that the White House’s claims - that this attack was motivated by anger over a film - were false.

***

The Obama White House’s interest in spreading this falsehood is multi-fold and obvious.

***

If the killing of the ambassador were premeditated and unrelated to the film, then it vests credibility in the criticism that the consulate should have been much better-protected, particularly on 9/11

He adopted and trafficked in all the wingnut lies and smears on BENGHAZI.

At this rate, by the time Obama boards Marine One for the last time on January 20, 2017, Griftwald will be citing Stormfront.

Cracker is awesome — I’ve seen them in four different stages, and about to add a fifth to the list.

Never been able to figure out why they’re as, um, underappreciated as they are. Still, they’re a nifty cult band, and they’ve been around for over 20 years, so I guess something works (even if album sales don’t).

‘bents aren’t cheap. It’s a niche market in a niche market. Don’t know what Lightspeeds run, but a good quality (Bacchetta, Rans, Easy Racers) is going to start around 1700 - 2200 dollar range. Price can go WAY up for something that’s all CF or Titanium.

What Cannondale, Trek do in a week might be a year’s output for most bent makers

re: #75 CuriousLurker

One day in Berlin, an Indian friend, one of the Sufis from the Rabbaniya I went to and myself were walking down Kottbusser Damm and we came across three women wearing that full-on niqab; when we passed by, it was obvious they were ethnic Germans - you could tell by their accents - and they were converts. My Indian friend commented, “You’ll see that a lot with converts; it’s the ‘conversion effect’ and it’s pretty common, especially with younger people.” The Sufi replied rather drily, “You’ll find a lot of converts trying to outdo each other, especially if they led a wild life prior to their conversion; it’s a form of over-compensation combined with remorse over their prior behavior or attitudes.”

Interesting observations. I can say I didn’t see that much among the Naqshbandi, as they tend to focus less on external aspects and more on internal matters.

As a race fan (getting ready to watch the German Grand Prix on CNBC starting in a few minutes) I am saddened by the passing of James Garner. He was a racer at heart and ran cars in many series back in the 60s and early 70s. He along with Paul Newman added that Hollywood bling to the sport and helped make it more mainstream for many.

Oh yeah, McQueen too. Thanks for the reminder. Another lesser known actor racer type was Dan Blocker…Hoss from Bonaza.

But I wouldn’t go so far as to call McQueen more prolific than Paul Newman. McQueen was a decent driver. Many real racers that drove against Paul Newman will tell you if Newman had dedicated himself to driving race cars full time from a young age, he could have been a champion in the pro ranks. He did have several SCCA armature titles to his name. He was racing and winning in GT cars all the way up to age 70. And to IndyCar racers on the CART side of things…Newman was a God!

Garner didn’t drive so much as have cars entered in racing.

Edit: Newman-Haas Racing won many an Indycar title with Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell and Christiano DeMatta.

Not as busy on overnights so the burden falls mostly on the daytime folks

You’re going to get a racer facts fight from me! : )

McQueen wanted to do a movie about F1…but he never drove F1. Of course Jimmy Garner was the American Driver in the great ol’ 60s movie Grand Prix.

He was the gentlemen driver (not a bad thing) with Peter Revson the fast guy (the racer who did drive and lost his life in an F1 car) at the 12 hours of Sebring (Fla) against Mario…not LeMans. You may be getting his part on the movie LeMans mixed in…a movie he was instrumental in getting made.

I love ‘em all, of course. And I’m loving the German GP right now. Lots of dicing going on in this one.

Yes, several times. It makes me very sad when it comes to Imola in 1994.

Senna was a hell of a driver…but in my opinion also a bit of a blockhead and he could be dangerous. Of course he is a god in Brazil to this day. Saw him race in many a US and Canadian Grand Prix back in the 80s

It’s funny how the human memory works; I was watching some of The Rockford Files episodes on YouTube, and one of the scenes takes place on Lankershim Blvd. - and for some unconnected reason, a memory came flooding back of Ernie’s Mexican Restuarant, which is also on Lankershim Blvd. The last time I was at Ernie’s was when I was 7 years old; that’s 37 years ago, but the memory came back as clear as day, including the name, which I’d long forgotten.

Ernie’s was my mom and dad’s favorite restaurant in all of Los Angeles and as I recall, it was quite good indeed.

Surely he never drove an F1 car. You have to be really really good before you can jump into even the worst car.

Not European Formula One races now were they? And that is what you hinted at. Most likely in SCCA races. Which is club racing…not professional level. No big deal…and I am not putting McQueen down. I am just making sure you get your racing facts in proper order. And that is a Formula junior car. Look at the engine…looks like a popper from a Mini.

Well, yeah. I mean, it’s the same demographic that will ignore all kinds of data that points to anthropogenic climate change because it stands in contradiction to their preconceived notions of a universe created solely for the pleasure of Mankind. To a large degree there’s a lot of faith riding on this. Climate change “Optimism” as they’re calling it now is more of the same. Yes, it’s changing; but, 1) it’s something that we can adapt to without having to make any changes because, 2) God will fix it either way.

My view is that the benefactors of faith are benefiting from the looming crisis insomuch as a general fear of major cataclysm, and distrust of or contempt for the science that warns us of said disasters, drives more optimistic personalities into the arms of theologies that preach a worldview that has the best interests of humans at its core. In many ways, it’s not their fault.

I am actually finding myself conflicted reading that. Perhaps some good will come of it, it almost seems like this individual is getting to a point where he is capable of honest self-examination.

Damn… I hate it when “Empathy Based Steve” makes an appearance.

The thing is, he doesn’t have to have changed his life for the worst “forever”. He could choose to do the hard work of examining his beliefs and changing for the better.

But if he just wants to cry about how “his country” is gone because there aren’t as many fellow xenophobic, hateful assholes as he hoped, then fuck him. And based on comments like “I am wore out trying to fight and make people take a stance” and “NOBODY GETS IT” I strongly suspect that’s the case.

I guess the strange feeling of sympathy I get from that screed is that this person was convinced that a revolution that would fix every grievance he had was at hand and that his deeply-held convictions would somehow be vindicated… and then nothing happened. By the sounds of it, he stuck it out too.
The actual sensation of malaise that I feel might be more ascribed to the knowledge that either he’ll become an embittered loner who ends off alienating anyone he comes across or worse, that he’ll interpret this lack of public activism for his pet cause to mean he must become the catalyst for change or whatever terrible action that might mean.

It doesn’t sound like he’ll give up the delusion at any rate.

re: #295 Higgs Boson’s Mate

Maybe I’m being too meta about it, but I think that many conservatives realize that their white-male-dominated world is irrecoverably lost. That realization drives them to nihilism; they’d rather have the whole works go up in chunks if they can’t be in charge.

This is exactly the problem. An electorate with no long term memory or sense of history doesn’t help, as they keep voting said nihilists into office.

RIP, Mr. Garner. When I was much younger I very much enjoyed “Maverick” because the show broke away from “Gunsmoke,” “Have Gun, Will Travel,” “*The Rifleman,” and the many other westerns where blasting people with your trusty firearm was the answer.

*”The Rifleman” used to particularly annoy me. “That Lucas McCain is good with a rifle.” Shit, who wouldn’t be good with a rifle at a range of twelve feet?

So I’ve got company coming over for Sunday dinner later and while I was cleaning the bathroom, Blossom the Destroyer discovered the bag of green beans in the veggie basket. By the time I came back into the kitchen there were green beans all over the counter and floor, a number of them munched a bit. Think my guests will notice? :/

The majority of Republicans are frustrated. Sure, I get that. But everything shouldn’t come to a halt because you don’t control the White House. By the way, you better get used to that too. You won’t get that back by appealing to Old White Guys.

I mentioned a while back that unless they can do SOMETHING (e.g. impeachment), their “white man’s country” is going to have a two-term black president on the record forever, and that may be part of what’s making them so crazy.

And may I repeat what I also said before: BWAHAHAHAHA!

And here we have a nice link from an article he did with Car And Driver

C/D: When Maverick became a hit, did you buy a nice car?

JG: Couldn’t afford one! Even though Maverick was the top show on television, I was stuck in a studio contract that paid only a few hundred bucks a week. When I took my wife, Lois, to the premiere of West Side Story, I was so ashamed of my old heap, I had to borrow Natalie Wood’s Cadillac.

Good point. They are desperate to discredit Obama and they’re running out of time to do so. Having it in the historical record that you don’t have to a be a white man in order to be a two term president has them chorusing “What a world! What a world!”

It’s dispiriting to me that rather than examine why they can’t win a national election, or why they have to gerrymander and suppress the vote to get anyone else elected, they instead dig in their heels and choose to just break things.

Watching a documentary about William Boeing. A segment about how he got utterly screwed, perceived as a Walton/Walmart monopolist greedy bastard that did dirty secret deals to fly the mail.

Mr Elon Musk should take careful note. He has similarly misguided enemies as do a number of corporate heads.

Reminds me how the expression “pioneers get the arrows the settlers get the farms”comes from. The vendetta Howard Hughes endured. Will our day see the difference between a Walton and a Musk career?

Mr. Garner, a lifelong Democrat who was active in behalf of civil rights and environmental causes, always said he met his wife, the former Lois Clarke, in 1956 at a presidential campaign rally for Adlai Stevenson, though in “The Garner Files” Mrs. Garner said they had actually met at a party earlier. She survives him, as do their daughter, Greta, known as Gigi; and Mrs. Garner’s daughter from a previous marriage, Kimberly.

In the 80s, Kimberly would visit Chip’s studio in Nashville, as James and Chips were friends. Since I was approx the same age as Kimberly, I was asked to partner (keep an eye on her) with her as she visited people, other studios along Music Row, and various nightspots.

When asked why she visited Nashville, Kimberly said she liked Nashville as opposed to LA - Southern CA, as she could be herself, and not some movie actor’s daughter. Well grounded lady, didn’t realize she was Garner’s stepdaughter.

Like I said, he did get screwed, but he was still a fabulously wealthy man who had a very nice life after divesting himself from his aircraft company, and a very successful one, too.

I thought you were making a comparison between a guy like Boeing, Hughes, or Musk, all of whom have some technical expertise in the areas they founded their core companies in, and a guy like Walton, who just applied economies of scale and borrowed efficiencies from other people. The difference between the capitalist-inventor and just the capitalist.

I’m watching a documentary on MSNBC, “Underwater Dreams”, about a high school robotics club from Phoenix AZ at a national competition they went to in California (underwater robots) — all the kids are undocumented, none of their parents speak a word of English, they were the only high school team at the event, their robot is made from stuff they bought at Home Depot, they didn’t use powerpoint for their presentation, they handled leakage issues by sticking tampons in the problem spots…

They won 1st prize. 2nd place was MIT.
