It’s simpler than that. The money and the base of activism against immigration and against immigrants comes from White Supremacists.

Yeah, sorry, thought I was commenting on a John Oliver piece about the prison system.

Point is, these people do not want a humane solution, even if that were a cheaper alternative, and they are certainly not willing to finance the comprehensive and far-reaching reforms we need to solve this humanely.

That looks a bit like a tall tale. If not, quite unprofessional, tho figuratively true:

Biden told the magazine about his 2011 visit with Putin, who at the time was prime minister, and said he found himself just inches away from the Russian leader.

“I said, ‘Mr. Prime Minister, I’m looking into your eyes, and I don’t think you have a soul,’” Biden told the magazine. “He looked back at me, and he smiled, and he said, ‘We understand one another.’”

My guess. Biden’s opening salvo for his foreign policy bona fides on his 2016 aspirations due to (from the article) Biden’s assessment is in stark contrast to that of former U.S. President George W. Bush, who famously said after his first meeting with Putin in 2001: “I looked the man in the eye … I was able to get a sense of his soul.”

The French and other EU countries have to be careful how they handle this stuff in the interest of community relations but it does need to be dealt with. Leaving this stuff unaddressed creates political openings for FN and other right wing nationalist parties. It’s a tough balance.

Not long ago I might have shared that sentiment but it’s unrealistic. The French need to handle this in a way that doesn’t end up pissing off a lot of young radicalized men who might be motivated to take out their frustrations in more drastic measures. Especially with lots of young men returning home from wars in Syria, Europe could have a huge problem on its hands.

Luap Nor has taken the great leap into Alex Jones territory, albeit with a huge dose of pro-Putin propaganda too.

While western media outlets rush to repeat government propaganda on the event, there are a few things they will not report.

They will not report that the crisis in Ukraine started late last year, when EU and US-supported protesters plotted the overthrow of the elected Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovych. Without US-sponsored “regime change,” it is unlikely that hundreds would have been killed in the unrest that followed. Nor would the Malaysian Airlines crash have happened.

The media has reported that the plane must have been shot down by Russian forces or Russian-backed separatists, because the missile that reportedly brought down the plane was Russian made. But they will not report that the Ukrainian government also uses the exact same Russian-made weapons.

They will not report that the post-coup government in Kiev has, according to OSCE monitors, killed 250 people in the breakaway Lugansk region since June, including 20 killed as government forces bombed the city center the day after the plane crash! Most of these are civilians and together they roughly equal the number killed in the plane crash. By contrast, Russia has killed no one in Ukraine, and the separatists have struck largely military, not civilian, targets.

They will not report that the US has strongly backed the Ukrainian government in these attacks on civilians, which a State Department spokeswoman called “measured and moderate.”

They will not report that neither Russia nor the separatists in eastern Ukraine have anything to gain but everything to lose by shooting down a passenger liner full of civilians.

re: #54 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

This latest round of fighting has both sides pushing for extreme measures. Israel doesn’t look like they’re going to stop short of eliminating Hamas operations in Gaza, while Hamas isn’t going to surrender unless all of Gaza is in ruins.

Both might get their wish. The butcher’s bill with be high.

And here’s the thing. Every time you think that Israel will have made a huge gaffe media-wise, or killed a large group of civilians in one go, Hamas will not only cheer the deaths, but will then drop even more missiles on Israel. Anything Hamas gains from the Israeli missteps are automatically given right back with their own horrors inflicted.

I also suspect Israel is also more united in dealing with Hamas than they have in a long time - the rocket attacks against Israel have done more to unite Israelis against Hamas than the political maneuvering in the Knesset. The same dynamic could work to Hamas benefit,

Or, the death and destruction could be used by the PA, Fatah, and Israel to finally separate Hamas from power. I just don’t think they’re capable of doing that.

It shouldn’t look good. The goal is to inflict as much pain and damage as possible until international pressure builds enough to make them stop. Hamas isn’t a real threat to Israel by itself. Yes, they’ve got hundreds of unguided rockets. If they had the ability to actually target specific sites, and their rockets were killing Israeli citizens on a regular basis, the current death toll in Gaza would be in the thousands as a real threat would face a retaliation that wouldn’t even pretend to care about collateral damage.

The real victims here are the Palestinian citizens and the Israeli soldiers who are getting killed in this conflict. Hamas, Netenyahu, they can go fuck themselves or go fuck each other for all I care. All they want is to wave their dicks around and kill as many of the “other” as they can. Bastards.

Interesting day today… Had a class scheduled that could very charitably be described as DataBase 101 (This is what a database is, this is a what tables are, this is how a integer and a float are different. Really basic stuff).

Private class, just say a very very large company. As they introduced themselves one thing became clear, most had masters in IT systems, many years experience and most were admins / developers in a particular (Not Microsoft) big data system I’ll simply refer to as “TS”.

What they wanted was an intro to MS SQL, with a focus on day to day ops / maint / disaster recovery. Lucky I’ve got a class like that in my repertoire, but it’s a 5 day class, and they had only scheduled a 3 day one.
Lucky the decision maker was there in the room, he and I conferenced with the sales rep who handles their acct, and I told them the truth.

I could teach the class they paid for, but it would not be a good return on investment. That I could pull something together on it, but I’d need to stop the class for about 3 hours so that I could pull together the resources and the people up-stream who had to make changes in the systems could react. It’s going to be a tiring next two days, basically teaching off the cuff on technical subjects. One thing for sure, I know that I’ll sleep well each evening. /tired-bitchy-steve

From a June 15-17 West Bank/Gaza public opinion survey that included face-to-face interviews with 450 Gazans. Note that this is being promoted by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, not exactly a “pro-Palestinian” outfit:

Gaza Public Rejects Hamas, Wants Ceasefire

A recent, credible poll shows that most Gazans oppose Hamas policies and leaders alike, and favor a ceasefire with Israel.

Today’s headlines are that Hamas has just rejected Egypt’s offer of a ceasefire with Israel and instead continues to fire rockets indiscriminately at Israeli towns and cities. Less known is a crucial fact: the people of Gaza are solidly against these Hamas policies. Indeed, by a very large majority, they oppose Hamas rule altogether. […]

Yes.

Israel is making many of the same mistakes England made in Northern Ireland…but times ten.
The British Army was consitently the best recuiter for the IRA. Break down some doors, beat the hell out of mom and dad in front of their 8 kids (Catholic family and all that) and then wonder why half of them become Provos 5 years later.

Hamas is getting much of their support simply because of the Gaza Blockade…hands down. When Israel made it an “all of us against all of them” proposition, Palestinian civilians weren’t left with much of a choice.

I just watched the interview of the American kid who was beat down in East Jerusalem two weeks ago Pretty much a standard police brutality case that you see here in America…but if this is at all typical for an Arab teen, then Israeli police are making enemies out of sheer spite and incompetence.

The kid American kid who got beaten was brought up along with Netanyhahu’s “telegenically dead Palestinians” that Charles mentioned upthread in this article in New York magazine about Israel losing the media war.

There’s also stuff like this that just makes you go, “WTF?” It’s a comment made during a broadcast interview by a right-wing Israeli scholar of Arabic literature at Bar Ilan University named Mordechai Keidar:

Keidar: “A terrorist, like those who kidnapped the boys and killed them, the only thing that will deter them, is if they know that either their sister or mother will be raped if they are caught. What can we do? This is the culture that we live in -” […]

Keidar: “I’m telling you, I’m talking about them, I’m not talking about what we can do or not do. I’m telling you what they live in. This is the only thing that deters a suicide bomber. If he knows that when he pulls the trigger, or blows himself up, his sister will be raped. That’s it. That’s the only thing that will bring him back home, to keep the honor of his sister. This is the culture of the Middle East. I didn’t create it, but this is the situation.” […]

972mag.com

I’m sure some Hamas members have said equally bad things, but this was a university professor. Despite him saying “I’m not talking about what we can do or not do,” there are those who would might take it as a suggested course of action, like maybe these guys.

Accidentally? With the gun nuts out in force, I bet one of them will be shot intentionally. I hate to say it, but truthfully, I can’t expect anything less.

Possibly The Devil’s Music!

i remember talking to this lab partner of mine from the people’s republic, when i was studying computer science in the early 80s

at that time disco was approved by the chinese state, but rock n roll was still the devil’s music

i was tempted to take him by a gay bar where at the time disco was the order of the day

Not sure why they’d be useful for anti-Islam bigots - the women are almost certainly Muslim, no? Just not under the boot of extremists.

The first pic could just as easily be from Peoria in the 1950s as Afghanistan…the second could be from lots of places. While there is no question whatsoever about the negative impact of religious extremism, those pics have been used so many times by so many people that are full of shit that I have serious doubt they are what they are represented to be.

181 simoom  Jul 21, 2014 6:36:19pm

Two defence analysts in London and a former military pilot who have studied the picture corroborated the claim by a local man, who said he had served in the military, that much of the damage was consistent with a missile strike.

Justin Bronk, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London, said: “The size of the shrapnel holes is consistent with what one might expect to see from an SA-11 hit. However, it is difficult to assess the total blast pattern with such a small fragment of fuselage.”

One former senior Royal Air Force officer who was shown the picture said he had seen similar damage on aircraft that had been hit by flying shrapnel from rocket attacks on airbases.

All three confirmed the part of the aircraft in the photograph was the port side of the Boeing 777’s cockpit. The former RAF officer, who flew fast jets, said that based on the evidence it would appear that the missile exploded in front and to the left of the aircraft.

I’m already expecting some Open Carry Texas or militia nutbar to shoot a kid that they think is illegal, but who turns out to be American and from the Rio Grande Valley. It’s inevitable.

If I ever had any indifference towards the GOP, it’s gone now. Permanently. Treating unarmed, unaccompanied children like an invading army that need to be repelled by force is the last goddamn straw. If anyone can still support or vote for these assholes, I simply don’t understand them at all. WTF.

185 dog philosopher  Jul 21, 2014 6:37:25pm

commenter on another blog passes on this item, supposedly by a certain roger kaplan of the american spectator:

There is a way to deal with the children, teenagers, and adults who are crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico into the United States.

Shoot them.

It is simple. It is straightforward. It is efficient. It is politically,
strategically, legally acceptable. I am not sure about morally, but who
is sure about anything morally these days?

There is no law that says the Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona National Guards cannot be mobilized to protect the hundreds of miles on our southern border that are violated daily by illegal immigrants. Reports differ, but recent estimates have close to a hundred thousand entries since the beginning of this year, most of them, we are told, from Central American countries.

There is no law, and no political wisdom, that says
that if persons refuse direct orders to halt at a border crossing, you
cannot stop them forcibly. It is widely acknowledged the world over that
national sovereignty includes the right to defend recognized
international borders.

The sad thing is that Arab countries have a terrible track record when it comes to regime change. Like we saw in Egypt last year, millions of people take to the streets to overthrow a tyrant, and they do! But then who is waiting to fill the void? Sadly, it’s another tyrant.

10 years spent in Iraq “winning hearts and minds” (yeah right) and who’s in charge now?

The most stable regimes are the ones that are ruled by absolute monarchs.

Yes, but we (and other Western powers) have been meddling in their affairs for ages, including propping up their dictators, so it’s no wonder they don’t have a clue how to be democratic. Now, with groups like Hamas, ISIS, the MB, etc. it seems to me that it only complicates things as they’d need to not only overthrow a tyrant, but also be capable of beating back violent extremists (all while figuring out how to run a country and build a democracy).

That’s a pretty tall order, so they end up falling back to the absolute monarchs (or other strongmen types).

Setting aside the fact the astronomical cost of building a big ass wall along the U.S./Mexico border, it still wouldn’t fix the problem.

Even IF you managed to put up a huge wall the entire length of the border the migrants wouldn’t give up. They’d tunnel under it, launch themselves over it, blast through it.

Also, part of the border is made of, you know, a RIVER that’s kind of hard to build a fence through.

Thirdly, a considerable section of the U.S./Mexico border is on - guess what? - Private Property. It’s so hilarious these Patriot types have no problem locking and loading for a Nevada farmer but apparently wouldn’t give two shits if Uncle Sam shredded a few ranches to keep the brown people out.

In order to build an actually imposing fence along the US / Mexico border we’d need several times the concrete used to construct the Grand Coulee Dam. At the very least it would completely fuck up the natural migration of many land animal species, leading to further habitat loss and extinction.

Russian ambassador to Malaysia says Ukraine rebels did not impede investigation, did not shoot down plane.

[Lyudmila G ] Vorobyeva said the rebels were only armed with a “small portable air defence system” (shoulder mounted) that can go up to 5km.

“I am not a military expert, but that BUK missile system is very sophisticated that you need special training to operate it.

“The rebels did not have the book or qualification to operate it, but the Ukrainian military have it,” she said.

The mood survey at the news site indicate 66% of the readers responding were angry about the report. There’s no choice available for “Don’t believe a fucking word of it,” however.

According to reports, in the Prague district of Michle, about 4,000 people are without water currently; this was as result of a sinkhole that opened up and took out the water mains.

Looks like it’ll be our turn in the east of the country, if the meteorologists are right, by this weekend - torrential rains and thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday and Sunday. Some of the worst floods in the past in the Czech Republic have taken place here during the summer months.

This is an interesting piece over at the Telegraph; it argues that even if the EU doesn’t ramp up sanctions against Russia, in some ways, it’s sort of irrelevant, as US hegemony over the international banking and financial sector could still put a serious dent in the Russian economy all by itself.

Good morning Lizards. Another day starting in the low 70s and headed to the mid or upper 80s with light overcast. Humidity is relatively low.

Construction site across the street* is digging. They’re about 4-5’ down across most of the site and drilling holes for piles around the edge of the site. The four trees that shaded the one part of the block are gone. They are also finding old foundations and having to demolish old concrete and the occasional brick wall.

* - This site is about three times the size of the one nearby that the new apartment building was erected on. Roughly occupying the parking lot that had the mobile crane on it that I posted pictures of.

It is the morning ritual for at least one of them to sit on the ledge and watch the work in progress. Then again, they did that to watch the human staff units scurrying to work before the construction began.

I’m awaiting the demands for the offending structure to be removed once it grows tall enough to interfere with the afternoon basking in the sun.

I just went over to Wikipedia and looked over McCain’s career. He’s had a lot of help from family (father and g-father had serious USN connections). His 2nd father-in-law had the local Arizona political connections, including McCain’s initial job upon leaving the Navy.

And, overall, I’d say that John has been a borderline screw-up the whole time. Might be bad karma, but John has made more than his share of votes and decisions that were “bad” in retrospect. It appears that with age and seniority he has not gained wisdom.

I don’t even bother explaining that gold and silver only have value because we give them value, or why the gold standard failed decades ago. I just shake my head and move on.
