I don’t think the Guardian’s editors fully appreciated the bizarre disconnect between these two pieces on today’s front page.

I see I happened to refresh just as a new thread went up.

OT, but I’m in the middle of moving across town this week, and my Internet won’t be transferred until Friday. Meanwhile, my bedding will be moved tomorrow. I’m thinking about setting up an air mattress at the old place until the tubes are relocated.

I will take this opportunity to again tell my Todd Starnes story:
While in the throes of fundamentalism (I got better), I had the opportunity on several occasions to interact with Starnes when he was at Baptist Press, the propaganda arm of the Southern Baptist Convention.

I cannot point to a single example, but I can say that the overall impression of everyone in our office who came in contact with Starnes was that he was a shit-weasel. This was back in the 1990s. I see he’s become even more of one since then.

“[Community Standards]…10 no-no areas for Facebook users: violence and threats, self-harm, bullying and harassment, hate speech, graphic content, nudity and pornography, identity and privacy, intellectual property, phishing and spam and security.”

I think this may qualify as a statement about ‘self-harm.’

This is one reason why I don’t necessarily diss Perry for his new glasses thing. I now need bifocals, but I hate them. So I wear regular strength contacts and reading glasses as well. I’ve tried several different styles, and have found a couple I like. The beauty of reading glasses is they don’t cost much if you don’t like them (~$10 for a decent frame).

I’m in sort of that boat. Have a plastic lens in one eye (cataract surgery), and see a golf ball at 200 yards with it. Other eye is about 20/400, so I wear a contact in that one. A set of $7.00 WalMart “half eyes” reading glasses handles everything out to arms length. I’ve actually got a couple of pairs of safety glasses for the shop with readers built in. about 10 bucks a pair.

Jack White is absolutely right - the Black Keys did blatantly steal the White Stripes’ style.

I beg to differ! (Kidding…but there may something to it, as I’ve always wondered).

There was a two man, drums and guitar band here in Columbus a ways back before the White Stripes called the Bassholes. Saw them a couple times when a friends band (V3 - Jim Shepard) was the main act and the Bassholes opened.

Here is a Wiki page on the main dude, guitarist Don Howland. I was sort of surprised how much info on the ‘net there is about them.

The Bassholes had a thing, no doubt. But the thing that made the White Stripes so cool is that they were so completely incompetent at playing their instruments, but somehow made it work amazingly well. They sucked, but they were awesome.

See, I don’t think they sucked as much as all that. Jack White has shown remarkable growth in his style over the years. Sure, they probably started out sucking, but they grew, and Jack White, at least, seems to continue to do so. Meg White (according to a recent Rolling Stone piece) appears to have become a hermit. What a waste.

I mentioned my friend Jim Shepard and his band V3 up thread. Sadly Jim took his own life back in ‘98 at 39. He had had a contract with Rick Rubin and Onion records. After one record he was dropped. And I think he took that as his one last chance to make it in the music biz…and he never really got past the disappointment. He was known for his low-fi, but very unique sound.

Allow me to drop a couple tunes on you…both from Photograph Burns - Onion Records…recorded in my basement studio back in 94-95 on a 8-track Otari. I do it in memory of him. He was a great music friend and some of the bands I was in got to open for him around Ohio State and other Columbus locations. Mentioning him made me sad and so I had to dig these up. I think you will like them.

The first video (End of the Bar) has the album cover image, the second (American Face) is of him at Staches with his lovely Framus Akkerman guitar. He could get the best crunchy sounds out of that guitar, with nary a pedal. Sometimes getting into Robert Fripp territory, using usually a small amp about ready to blow up and miked.

There was that!

I like raw tunes. Play that way myself to a degree. I just wish I could get the guys I was working with to polish off a CD we were doing so I could share. Sometime I’ll see if I can post up some of an older CD we did too…but I can be shy about my own stuff.

One thing I can say, the bands I was in (drummer, songwriter, vocals) never got laughed off stage…and often we did command attention. Nothing like creating music and playing live! Never did much cover either. Almost all original. All for the love of it.

Now I am working with the last member of our long-time Friday night band and doing really simple stuff, with what I hope are good lyrics.

I vaguely recall that the Gideons encourage people to take the bible if they need one, though.

Yeah, stage fright but also apparently some social anxiety as well. This was based on Jack White’s interview, so it’s all we have to go on. I know Partridge had stage fright. At least he kept producing some great music, just not touring.

Jack White played in Milwaukee last night.

Jack White’s Monday night concert at the Rave’s Eagles Ballroom reportedly was the fastest sellout in venue history: about 3,500 tickets gone in seven minutes flat.

So naturally, excitement was high — higher, perhaps, than the stifling temperature in the room. But the person who seemed most thrilled to be there Monday was White.

Bursting on stage and taking a swig from a bottle in the shadows, White jumped up and down, his mad-scientist mane flailing in the cool blue light before the rumble of a distortion-dipped jam that segued into a pounding “Icky Thump” from White’s breakthrough duo the White Stripes.

Sounds like it was a great show.

We went to this fantastic seafood restaurant and mom and her hubby weren’t as enthused as we were and brought most of their food back to the hotel. Where, after they fell asleep, the wife and I took their food and ate it ever so quietly in the bathroom (I called it the bathroom of shame).

That’s why he was crying about not being able to come home because he was afraid he wouldn’t get a fair hearing, right?

The 3rd leg of Nashville’s economy Music (1st TN State Gov, 2nd Insurance) is still vibrant, but for the last 30 or so years, folk making music in Nashville realized that they don’t have to be on Music Row to make hit records.

It may sound hokey, but for an historical introduction to Music Row, maybe take the $30 Studio B tour (it’s more than just Studio B), or walk Broadway from 5th Ave (the Ryman is on 5th) Tootsie’s is on the corner, down to 2nd Ave up to Church and back down 1st Ave.

Stop by the Ernest Tubb Record Shop, 417 Broadway. See if they have a copy of “Steel Guitar Rag.”

You’ll see cutoffs, cowboy boots, & along 1st Ave, in addition to the honky tonks & blues clubs, some Nashville pre music row history.

Or go to the Country & Western Music Museum. It’s an interesting place. A couple of years ago, they did a retrospective on Jimi Hendrix.

There’s also the Frist (Sen Bill & Tommy Frist) Center For The Visual Arts at 919 Broadway. Some good exhibits there.

RBS can probably suggest some good downtown food spots.

It seems the residents of Donetsk - or at least some of them - are getting a little sick of the separatists BS. For me at least, the question remains; what if the majority of the residents of Donetsk tell the separatists, “We want you out of here - pack up your shit and leave, now”, what are the separatists such as Gubarev going to do? Will they simply ignore such a demand? Will they turn their guns on the residents of Donetsk?

An equally good question is how would the Kremlin react to such a scenario? I can imagine they wouldn’t be happy on one hand, but on the other hand, it’s also a way out for them - they can claim “the separatists overstepped their bounds and lost the loyalty of the people”; such a scenario would allow them to wash their hands of the entire matter by throwing Gubarev, Girkin, etc., under the bus and still claim some kind of moral high ground: Novorossiya failed not because of Russia, but because the separatists politically and morally failed and ‘lost’ the people.

Like I said, the Kremlin wouldn’t be happy about that - but they could still easily twist such a scenario to their advantage.

According to the Insect Museum of West China, an expedition to the outskirts of Chengdu in mid-July returned dobsonflies with 8.3-inch wingspans and “giant snake-like fangs.” Previously, the largest-known aquatic insect was the South American helicopter damselfly, which had a wingspan measuring 7.5 inches.

Very bad news this morning. My mother died suddenly about 3 hours ago. I will be out for a few days. She was 85 and outlived her own mother by just a year.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as I gather the family and we all say good bye to our mom, grandma, and great grandma.

I did when I was an avid reader of Chomsky, Pilger et al. But one needs to gain a broader perspective and not fall into the same dehumanising trap that fuels these conflicts. More freedom than America! Greenwald and Snowden said so!

Putin signs law that could end up blocking Facebook and Twitter in Russia

Russian president Vladimir Putin has signed a new law that forces firms operating web services in the country to store Russian citizens’ data there. As the law also makes it possible to block non-compliant services, this may be a precursor to a new wave of internet censorship.

Putin also signed a law on Tuesday to ban repeated street protests. On Wednesday, telecoms regulator Roskomnadzor also clarified an upcoming requirement for bloggers to abandon anonymity, saying they would only need to do so if they receive a Roskomnadzor notice. This law will come into effect on 1 August.

I believe the plan now is to open a bunch of casinos in Crimea to drum up tourist business. The Crimeans have always considered it a family-friendly place, and aren’t too thrilled about this. Seems the Russian response to that is “you’re free now, so sit down and shut up.”

re: #215 Pie-onist Overlord

Let’s see. Hamas has used ambulances in the past to navigate Gaza in order to carry out attacks. It uses launch sites in close proximity to hospitals, schools, and other civil buildings, including using apartment buildings to launch attacks against Israel.

Israel is within its rights to defend itself from attack. It also has a responsibility to minimize the effect on civilians. That puts the two goals at odds with each other, particularly when Hamas seeks to maximize civilian casualties at every opportunity - including refusing to accept any and all ceasefire agreements all while extending attacks deeper into Israel, including near Ben Gurion airport.

It’s that move that may have been Hamas’ fatal undoing. The attack, and subsequent move by airlines and then the FAA to stop flights in and out of TLV, gives Israel the rationale to go and finish off Hamas - disarming it once and for all. Of course, Hamas can read into this that the attacks succeeded beyond their wildest dreams by causing significant economic harm to Israel, so they’ll pursue more attacks of that kind.

Each side read into the FAA decision what they want - but Israel holds the stronger hand because even the EU is calling on the disarmament of Hamas and other terror groups in Gaza - although they don’t spell out who will do it (and knowing the EU, it doesn’t want to be them) or when this will happen.

Greenwald likes to play the moral equivalency card, but there have been thousands of attacks against Israel - each one with deadly intent in this current round (but there have been rocket/missile attacks from Gaza every month except one since the 2012 ceasefire was in place). The only difference is that Hamas needs to get lucky to inflict casualties with its mortar and rocket attacks, while Israel can more easily inflict casualties on Gazans and Hamas.

He further ignores the decades of abuse heaped on Palestinians by their own Arab neighbors - like when Egypt, TransJordan and Syria and Lebanon refused to resettle the Palestinian refugees after 1948, and instead locked them into camps from which they stoked the flames of hatred for use against Israel. Or that Transjordan and Egypt didn’t help found Palestine with the territory they captured in 1948 - the West Bank (including West Jerusalem and the Old City) and Gaza by allowing the Palestinians to determine their futures for themselves.

He ignores the fact that Israel was able to make peace with Egypt and Jordan, which included land returns, but Gaza was specifically excluded because Egypt didn’t want to deal with the extremists there (and that’s a rather prescient move - sticking the mess with Israel).

IOW, Greenwald ignores facts, the history of the region and the Palestinians own efforts to scuttle peace with Israel. It doesn’t diminish Israel’s own steps that make a peace deal more difficult, including settlements but I’ve always contended that settlements are housing and housing can be sold/transferred as Israel has done twice - once in the return of Sinai and then with the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza. The Israelis forcibly removed Israelis from those settlements and they could do it yet again in the name of peace, but Hamas has shown no willingness to accept a peace deal with Israel. It’s always a ceasefire with an eye towards the next conflict. That, plus their constant acts in carrying out attacks against Israel is the textbook definition of an interminable conflict.

He’s imitating China in many ways. Originally, users of China’s Twitter clones, like Sina Weibo, could register anonymously, with just an email address. The government stopped that a few years ago, requiring everyone to register with their real names and their national ID number. (It’s the same process for getting a cellphone number, which means some businesses accept your cell number as a form of ID.) Then, after Weibo users began to report news events — like train wrecks — and shoot video of corrupt police and government officials doing corrupt things, the government put a different control on netizens. Any weibo user that has more than 5,000 followers or any post that gets more than 500 hits will be investigated. Officially, this is to control the spread of harmful “rumors” which disturb the harmonious society of China.

The Great Firewall of China is well known. The government blocks Google now, to add to a growing list of mostly Western sites. Certain words and phrases are blocked from Internet searches and Wikipedia searches.

Facebook officially is blocked, and has been since 2009, but I’ve noticed in the last year an increasing number of my students and former students on Facebook. They use VPNs to “climb” the Great Firewall.

Politically, I’d put him somewhere between center and center-right. He likes the AKP, but he’s critical of some of their shenanigans as well.

But he also occasionally goes with conspiracy theories as well; he’s certainly a mixed bag. That being said, I’d rather spend time talking with him than with the absolute lunatics of ISIS.

I’m not sure quite what their thinking is. The reason why Russian soldiers wore masks in Crimea is pretty obvious: they were supposed to be locals, so when nobody recognized any of them it might have been a little too much to explain, plus with the amount of TV coverage people could have recognized them back home. (The sudden appearance of disciplined, identically uniformed, well-equipped people unfamiliar with the area didn’t exactly fool too many of the locals in reality.) I don’t think many of Putin’s Tourists (the irregulars who just waltzed over the border) wore masks much.

As for the rest of them, it will get you off the hook if you accidentally shoot Ivan from down the street in a drunken accident. Plus, all the cool freedom fighters are wearing them these days.

Chances of American children on the border getting shot because they “look illegal” have risen again:

Jim Gilchrist Announces Grand Vision for New Minuteman Border Patrols in 2015

The Minuteman Project’s “Operation Normandy” has been launched as of 1200 hours Monday, July 7. This event will dwarf the original Minuteman Project of 2005. I expect at least 3,500 non-militia volunteers to participate, plus uncounted groups of militias from all over the country.

If you are familiar with the Normandy invasion of France in 1944, then you have an idea how large and logistically complicated this event will be. However, there is one difference. We are not going to the border to invade anyone. We are going there to stop an invasion.

Our federal, state, and community governments have failed to address and fix this calamity. In the spirit of our nation’s Founding Fathers, it is once again time to bring unprecedented national awareness to the decades-long illegal alien crisis jeopardizing the United States.

Participation is open to everyone and there is only one rule: whatever you do, stay within the rule of law.

It will take 10 months to recruit, organize, and launch this event, and it will cover the porous areas of the 2,000-mile border from San Diego, Ca. to Brownsville, Texas.

D-Day: 1 May, 2015.

My ex loved Seagal’s movies. I’m sure I’ve exceeded the recommended maximum dosage of Under Siege several times over.

Confession: I enjoyed some of the earlier Seagal movies…but by the time of Under Siege I’d realized that he only had one script, and it was everyone else on the set trying to create a movie by acting around him. He was probably hell at set meals.

I’ve met Oktar; he’s an…..interesting….chap, to put it mildly. He catches a lot of flak from hardcore Islamists, largely owing to his rather liberal interpretations of Islam.

That, and he advocates secularism. And art. And music. Needless to say, the hardcore Islamists find that to be a big no-no. There actually was a genuine, bona-fide attempt a year ago or so to assassinate him by al-Qaeda. He was a primary target on their Turkish shit list. They accused him of being a Mossad agent as well as a Freemason (that last one comes about because he was made an honorary Mason by the Grand Lodge of Italy, I believe).

Huh? He’s promoted anti-Freemason conspiracy theories for years per Wikipedia.

Local news- A school caught fire, lots of smoke several buildings involved, nobody hurt. The news anchor says ‘But the REAL news is a drone was spotted over the fire.” The traffic/news helicopter then goes on to fly toward and use the super telephoto setup to show us…. A phantom R/C quad with some little cam.

At this point I’d guess that drone was being run by a very local hobbyist or a very bold news video company just wanting a good view and footage of the fire. One of these indy crews that chase fire/police dispatch orders.

Under Siege is not all that bad, plus it has a completely over-the-top performance by Tommy Lee Jones. The other variants all seemed to feature Seagal in another vessel (sub, train, etc.) doing basically the same thing, or he was playing a honest cop being suckered by bad cops, or just a good cop trying to clean shit up. Same character, different names, different settings.

His later ones have less martial arts stuff and more Seagal lumbering around trying to run. Since my divorce, I have not watched one Seagal movie and never intend to.

Meanwhile, Russian separatists are cheering that they’ve downed two Ukrainian fighter jets near where Malaysian Air 17 was shot down.

The planes, both Su-125 jets, were struck in the vicinity of Saur Mogila, a town just west of the Russian border, said Aleksey Dmitrashkovsky, a spokesman for the Ukrainian armed forces. He said he had no information about the fate of the pilots.

But Bogdan Senik, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, said a witness reported seeing at least one parachute open.

Vladislav Seleznev, a Ukrainian military spokesman in the eastern combat zone, said the two fighter jets were struck by antiaircraft missiles when they were flying in the same vicinity as Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, which was shot down last week with 298 passengers and crew on board. He said a pilot was the only person in each of the two military planes.

There is no such thing as a production model SU-125. There may have been prototypes of the ground attack plane, but nothing was ever put in production. It’s far more likely that the fighters shot down were SU-25s, which Ukraine does have.

It also highlights the fact that the separatists continue to have the weapons necessary to take down fighter planes and civilian aircraft.

Likewise, if the people of Texas and of the rest of America wish to see our borders secured, our laws faithfully enforced and repel Obama’s illegal alien invasion, we’re going to have to bite the bullet and take individual action.

And so we independent units of the Bolinas Border Patrol and the Central Valley citizens militia are saddling up and marching to the border where we’ll be meeting up with our patriot brethren in Texas.

Ted Cruz is butthurt about HBO’s True Blood:

“Of all the places I never thought to be mentioned, HBO’s True Blood vampire show would have to be near the top of the list,” Cruz wrote on his Facebook page. “Sunday night, they aired a misogynist and profanity-ridden episode where Texas Republicans are murdered attending a ‘Ted Cruz fundraiser.’”

In an episode that aired Sunday, two vampires go undercover as Texas Republicans to attend a gala in Cruz’s honor at the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas, where they hope to track down a woman who helped introduce a disease that kills vampires. The gala quickly turns violent when a gang of thugs guns down the attendees in search of the same woman.

Fund went on to invoke arguments familiar to anyone who’s heard a conservative try to explain why Democrats are the real racists, reminding readers that Woodrow Wilson had a horrible record on race relations, that a larger percentage of congressional Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and that the late Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) was once a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

He only blithely alluded to Richard Nixon’s “Southern Strategy,” which, coupled with Lyndon B. Johnson’s support of civil rights legislation, helped cement a half-century of voting patterns in the old Confederate states: black voters flocked to the Democratic Party while white voters shifted to the GOP in droves.

Sadly, the result of the conversation was that the stances of leaders on both sides prevent anything moving forwards right now.

Bibi and the far-right nationalist hardliners that he’s allied with are not at all interested in an actual peace process at the moment, or to put it more fairly to them, they don’t believe it’s possible.

This does not, note, justify the use of indiscriminate violence by Hamas. That also isn’t going to move a peace process forward.

The job of an editor is to reduce verbiage and make sure the concept being conveyed is clear. Dropping crash doesn’t diminish the point being conveyed.

Substituting incident for crash conveys that we don’t know all the facts/circumstances. Crash indicates how the flight eventually ended.

Alternatively, commas added thusly would convey things much more clearly:

Dutch military plane, carrying victims from Malaysian Air Flt. 17 crash, landed in Netherlands.

It depends on where this particular tunnel was found. If it was found along the Egypt-Gaza border, then it would be for smuggling items in and out of Gaza so as to avoid the Rafah border crossing and Egyptian security. Weapons are among the items being smuggled, along with general contraband as well as people.

If the tunnel is along the Israel-Gaza border, then the purpose is meant to allow Hamas to infiltrate Israel so as to carry out attacks that couldn’t be done through the missile and rocket barrages. Those attacks include the attempts to kidnap Israelis, including soldiers patrolling along the border with Gaza.

You’ve got a million refugees from Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq and NGOs, the UN, and Jordanian efforts are quite overloaded. As that article notes, the refugees Jordan has taken in is like the US adding the population of Canada in one shot. It’s just not possible to provide adequate humanitarian care and services for all of them.

The solution is to grant assistance, which has been done, both directly to the Jordanian government, through UNHCR, and trying to settle down the conflicts in those neighboring countries so their refugees can return from where they came.

But because the fighting continues along its borders, this would be a Herculean task and not likely to be concluded anytime soon.

Yep. They can bring up 19th century political dynamics all they want and ignore that their party and ideology happily welcomed in Dixiecrats but the fact of the matter is since the 60’s by and large the Democratic Party has taken the lead on issues involving gender, racial, religious, and sexual orientation equality more so than the Republican ones. They love to bring up the unproved LBJ quote or that more Republicans voted for the CRA of 1964 but ignore that their very party nominated an opponent of the law for president that same year and pretty much every Republican presidential candidate has embraced some form of the Southern Strategy from Nixon to Romney.

You’d have to identify, locate, and target them. Hamas has gotten progressively more sophisticated in its tunnels, so finding them has been even more difficult.

The situation could be akin to the US experience in the Cu Chi region of Vietnam, where the Viet Cong built hundreds of miles of tunnels from which they launched incessant attacks and all kinds of technological efforts fell short of eliminating the tunnel threat until a combination of Tunnel Rats and B-52 airborne attacks with large bombs revealed the extent of the tunneling.

Now consider that the region in question in Gaza and adjoining Israel is heavily populated and used for agriculture (particularly on the Israeli side) making airborne bombing a non-starter since it would destroy the livelihood of Israelis on their side of the border.

The US provides significant aid to Jordan. Foreign aid signed into law earlier this year provided $360 million in civil aid, and $300 million in military aid to Jordan. The foreign assistance is also constrained by the sequester.

Should Jordan get more aid? Absolutely.

That report linked above also indicates that U.S. officials have noted that of the $1.7 billion in total U.S. multilateral funding for the Syrian humanitarian crisis, the United States has provided more than $268 million toward the humanitarian needs of Syrian refugees in Jordan.

Yes it was a serious question.

Can Israel not close off the entrances to those tunnels within their own borders?

The tunnel networks are quite extensive. IIRC estimates are that Hamas has spent $10 million building them up. It’s too risky to leave them with that much underground infrastructure. More info here: time.com

They pay taxes on everything they buy too, don’t they?

If they’re here in Texas, then yeah. Sales taxes on everything. Social Security and Medicare and all the usual deductions out of their paychecks unless their employer pays them in cash. No insurance so they rely on the ER for medical care if they need it, or on doctors that will look the other way and not ask too many questions.

But of course, they’re the ones taking advantage of the system. It’s not the employers who want (or in the case of agriculture, need) immigrant labor exploiting them that’s the problem. :-p

Cu Chi is basically a sort of national park in Vietnam now. I went there when I spent 2-3 days there at the tail end of the Malaysia visit. They’ve widened the tunnels a bit so that the tourists can fit through them better. And they’re (rightfully) proud of kicking the butts of those who carpet bombed farmers.

The picture I’ve posted of someone going in/out of a spider hole is from there. And there are identifiable bomb craters all about the area still as well.

Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is an excellent book, and yes….the Nazis were very much a lower-middle class phenomenon; as Shirer pointed out, white-collars workers terrified of sliding into the ranks of the working class, whom they considered themselves to be superior to.

544 Lidane  Jul 23, 2014 9:21:43am

Oh hey. Lord Monckton is flapping his pie hole again:

WorldNetDaily columnist Lord Christopher Monckton knows that Americans would rise up and demand President Obama’s imprisonment if only they knew the truth about “the genuineness of the ‘birth certificate.’” They would know this, he argues, if only the “Marxstream news media” (that’s a new one) would stop suppressing the findings of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s conspiracy-theory-driven “cold case posse.”

Monckton writes today in WND that the findings of Arpaio’s “investigation” into Obama’s birth certificate received “virtually no major news coverage,” thus letting Obama off the hook and suppressing the great work of “tea party citizens.”

He goes on to link media coverage of the birther conspiracy theory to reports about climate change: “[T]he voters are not given a fair selection of the facts on the climate, on the ‘birth certificate’ or on many other subjects where the ‘liberal’ majority in the news media simply refuses to keep them briefed. Herein lies a grave danger to democracy.”

It seems voters will miss out on Arpaio’s damning investigation, “unless they had been fortunate enough to read WND.”

NRA’s ‘Everyone Gets A Gun’ plan: Kids must pass shooting tests to advance in school

“Just like we teach them reading and writing, necessary skills. We would teach shooting and firearm competency,” he explained. “It wouldn’t matter if a child’s parents weren’t good at it. We’d find them a mentor. It wouldn’t matter if they didn’t want to learn. We would make it necessary to advance to the next grade.”

Johnson also suggested that the government would have to “subsidize” the purchase of guns like it did with food, education, and health care.

“I mean, perhaps we would have government ranges where you could shoot for free or a yearly allotment of free ammunition,” he said. “Gun policy, driven by our need for guns would protect equal access to guns, just like we protect equal access to voting, and due process, and free speech.”

Johnson concluded by lamenting that even Second Amendment advocates “can’t fathom a world where we would treat guns as a need.”

To be honest, given that guns are around and so many idiots don’t know how to handle one safely I think people should take a gun safety course. Now I don’t think it should be a requirement in order to graduate but it’s not a completely bad idea. I had to take one in NY (hunter safety course which included gun safety) in order to get my hunting license and was raised in a family that owned fire arms. This was before the “ZOMG lock your guns up and hide them from your kids” craze and my father showed me how to shoot and safely handle guns and rifles.

I honestly think the “Hide the guns” mentality has done more harm than good because kids find the gun eventually and that’s when accidents happen. And don’t even get me started on adults and their irresponsible handling of firearms.

I guess he’d consider them ‘clean vermin’ if they had paid him to do his show.

NRA’s ‘Everyone Gets A Gun’ plan: Kids must pass shooting tests to advance in school

Yes, because being able to shoot is so pertinent to academic success. Seriously NRA just fuck off and find a better hobby than guns. Your obsession with these things isn’t healthy.

What word would you substitute for crash?

Disaster? Crime? Horror? Attack?

Is it still a crash when a plane falls apart in midair?

You know Ted, if you’re upset about you not getting gigs. Maybe you should stop sounding like a Nazi and stop calling people vermin. It makes you sound like an even bigger asshole than you already are.

That’s the thing. Is he calling the Tribe unclean vermin or the SPLC vermin? Maybe both.

Either way, he comes off like a Nazi. Really I’ve never seen anyone outside the Nazi leadership so obsessed with using dehumanizing rhetoric.

What are you hinting at Paul?

[snip]

They will not report that the missile that apparently shot down the plane was from a sophisticated surface-to-air missile system that requires a good deal of training that the separatists do not have.

Come out and say it.

Yet the separatists gleefully report on how they are bringing down Ukrainian fighter jets. So they are able to bring down a fighter jet with surface-to-air missiles yet don’t have the know how to bring down commercial jets with surface-to-air missiles. Gotcha.

re: #516 Killgore Trout

The reason why that pic is significant is because after the soldiers leave the owner of that house is going to return, take a pic of the tattered/destroy UN food bags and post it online claiming the Israelis are destroying UN food stockpiles. There’s even a decent chance a media stringer is going to come along and sell the pics to Reuters, AFP etc. That’s how this stuff works. The UN’s role in perpetuating/enabling to conflict is a separate issue. Have they returned the rockets found yesterday in the UN school to the terrorists who own them?

How do you know that, though ? That seems a remarkable statement - is there evidence of this going on ?

Some people believe that every single video or photo taken by a Palestinian showing Palestinian suffering of any kind is suspect/staged, regardless of whether it’s coming from a photojournalist or a civilian. If the person recording the image/video was Palestinian, it’ll be assumed they’re lying; if it was a non-Palestinian working for a news agency, then it’ll be assumed they were either sympathetic—and therefore in cahoots with, or duped by—duplicitous Palestinians.

The logic seems to be that since there have been occasions where something has been staged, cropped, or Photoshopped in the past, ergo everything is automatically assumed to be faked.

For example +972 Magazine posted this video clip early this morning. It shows no wounded or “telegenically dead Palestinians”, but it does show 4 minutes of terrified Palestinian adults & children trying to escape to escape their eastern Gaza City neighborhood during intense bombardment earlier this week. It was taken by a Palestinian media outlet, so it’s sure to be dismissed by some.
