Stunning: Tea Party GOP Congressman Mistakes Senior US Government Officials for Foreigners

Rep. Curt Clawson (R-Florida) thoroughly embarrassed himself in Congress yesterday — and inadvertently revealed a streak of bigotry — by mistaking two senior US government officials for representatives from the Indian government, apparently because of their Indian names and dark skins.

It’s another moment brought to us by the Tea Party. This was Clawson’s first day on the Asia and the Pacific subcommittee, after winning a special election to replace Trey Radel, who was forced to resign after his conviction for cocaine possession.

Watch the video above for this unbelievably awkward yet very revealing exchange.

I thought Radel was South Carolina not Florida. Not to nitpick because this is really a what the fuck moment. Props for the officials for not going off on him and calling him out for the stupid moron he is. I stand corrected. Radel was Florida but man what a moron bigot this guy is.

Thursday was Clawson’s first day sitting on the subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. He was named to the full committee July 9. Subcommittee Chairman Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) promoted Clawson’s deep international business acumen and knowledge of four languages in welcoming him. “Our newest member of this committee, Curt Clawson … speaks four languages and all kinds of other great stuff,” Chabot boasted.

I bet he never did his homework for school, either. Too smart for that shit.

There is so much win in this article

The “we like sex” argument is a winning one, so why are so many people afraid to use it?

There’s no reason to be coy about any of this. Fucking is part of normal, everyday life. Sex is not special occasion behavior or only done for procreation. People have sex because they were sitting on the couch and were like, “Hey, we have 15 minutes.” Sure, it’s theoretically optional, but the notion that medical care only addresses the things we need strictly to survive is laughable to the extreme. If I screw my knee up exercising, the insurance company isn’t like, “No doctor for you, because you could have just sat on your ass from here until the end of time.” (Which is also an “optional” behavior that can cause health problems, so I guess no medical care for that either?) If I need an allergy prescription, my doctor doesn’t say, “Well, just stay inside all the time and you won’t have this problem,” even though leaving my house is, technically, optional. Same with vaccines. Insurance companies cover them even though being around other people is theoretically optional for a very simple reason: Health care is for people, and people do things, even if they could theoretically not do things. Indeed, the idea that sex is somehow exempt from medical care falls apart when you consider not just maternity care, but also things like STI testing. Incidentally, not having sex might also be a factor in health problems that insurance covers—god knows that undertaking voluntary celibacy for no good reason would probably create cause to rack up some mental health care bills.

Speaking of prejudice, I’ve noticed that a lot of RWNJ commenters pointedly include “leprosy” among the hazards supposedly presented by immigrant children. Given the enormous historical and cultural significance of this term, and the virtually non-existent risk, its frequent use points to a profound, almost atavistic, hatred and fear of the “other.”
It also makes me wonder which RWJN media shill is pushing this disgusting claim.

Bizarre as it seems, a large part of our population drive cars, use computers, and wear modern clothes; but think like dark age peasants.

I think what it is that a fair chunk of our country never accepted the Civil Rights movement’s goals. Yes, we celebrate MLK Day every January but it’s well to remember that getting that past Reagan’s desk wasn’t exactly easy, that Strom Thurmond was a sitting Senator into the 21st century, and I could go on and on. That’s not to say I don’t think we’ve improved as a nation when it comes to how we view people of different racial backgrounds; we have and I think continue to improve but there’s a loud part of the population that still lives in the dark on that.

In an intensely awkward congressional hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday, freshman Rep. Curt Clawson misidentified two senior U.S. government officials as representatives of the Indian government.

Obviously Obama’s fault for appointing Indian-looking people to the State Department. Or the fault of U.S. Civil Service system for hiring Indian-looking people. //

Back in TX there was another female Muslim taxi driver who wore hijab and was olive-skinned like me. She often got mistaken for a foreigner by passengers (as did I), but she’d just play along with it, accent and all.

I couldn’t do it because I could never keep a straight face.

Oh, I just remembered a story:

One day this man came out of the airport, walked up to the taxi line, took one look at me and started yelling, “Oh HELL NO, I’m not getting in the car with any gawt-damned Eye-ranian!! I’ll wait for the next cab!”

The inspectors, who all knew me quite well, just rolled their eyes and one of them went up to him and and calmed him down, said it was fine, he could take the next cab. He even opened the door for him.

The driver of the cab he got into smiled like the cat that ate the canary and the inspector was doubled over, LOL. Why? Guess where the driver was from…

One of my perennial favorite things about New York is the Dial 777 car service, which does business as “Tel Aviv Limo service”, with Jewish owners and managers, Pakistani dispatchers, Somali mechanics, and the drivers are mostly Sikhs or Iranians. It all works out but the one time I heard a three-way argument between a dispatcher, manager, and driver I don’t think anyone was actually understanding, or even listening, to each other.

That would make a great new style Taxi situation comedy show.

Back in the 80s, I was mistaken for a Russian guide at the Soviet American trade exhibit in Dallas. The aerospace section included a huge (5 foot) model of the R-7 rocket stack with the Soyuz spacecraft. Being somewhat knowledgeable about such things, I was explaining some of the features to a young friend. A nice Dallas lady came up and complimented me on my wonderful command of English, remarking that I had just the barest hint of an accent(!). Rather than embarrass her, I thanked her and remarked that I had been learning English since I was very young.
A few minutes later, I saw her and her male companion leaving the exhibit. I thought about running past them out the door while shouting, “ASYLUM! ASYLUM! I WANT TO DEFECT!”

As I stated earlier, that former friend is Libertarian. She has recently been engaged. Since libertarians are nearly always out only for themselves, how the heck do relationships work for them. It requires compromise, selflessness, and sacrifice. Things antithetical to Libertarianism. Seriously, how?

It’s a word that creates a strong emotional reaction in most people. I’ve been seeing a LOT of that flying around from all corners since this thing started, which is one of the reasons I’ve been pushing for accuracy in speech/writing.

Emotionally fraught words & phrases, stereotyping, group blame, etc. is all used to provoke knee-jerk reactions and shut down calm, rational discussion, which it does it very effectively.

Yes. I meant to read it sooner, but I just did it now. Nice Page.

My comment remains the same.

I think when people are figuring out how the world works, many times they will latch onto a set of beliefs which helps them cope. If you only look at what they’ve latched onto, and not what they were going through at the time, you don’t have a full picture. We can certainly generalize about a group of people who share a set of ideas, but it’s always risky to apply a generalization to an individual.

Minuteman Project Leader Accuses Religious Groups Of Acting As ‘Non-Violent Cartels’ To Aid ‘Covert Invasion’

Gilchrist claimed that “criminal cartels and non-criminal cartels, the do-gooders and people who want to save everybody in the world on both sides of the border” are using child migrants as “human shields, not in the sense of warfare but in the sense of ideological warfare between foreign countries and the government of the United States, the people of the United States.”

When host John Bachman asked Gilchrist what he meant by “non-criminal cartels,” Gilchrist replied, “I would say the religious orders, and it’s not only the Catholic Church, and there are the Protestant church or whatever, it’s several religious orders, it’s several individuals who have banded together to allow this to happen, who want this to happen, for either religious reasons or political reasons or ideological reasons.”

Florida Lawmaker Drafts Bill To Require Every Student To Watch Dinesh D’Souza Documentary

Republican Alan Hays, inspired after seeing the movie in theaters, said he now plans on introducing a one-page bill in November which would require all 1,700 Florida high schools and middle schools to show the movie to their students, unless their parents choose to opt them out. The documentary film is a conservative-spin on American history focusing on elevating the “essential goodness of America” while discrediting criticisms about American’s checkered history with civil rights and social justice. It’s not completely inconceivable for the bill to pass the Republican-controlled Florida legislature and be signed into law by Republican Gov. Rick Scott.

“I saw the movie and walked out of the theater and said, ‘Wow, our students need to see this.’ And it’s my plan to show it to my colleagues in the legislature, too, before they’re asked to vote on the bill,” Hays said.

They’re more likely to get leprosy from armadillos. Those guys are moving up into the mid-Southern states.

Monday, I was driving along Davy Crockett Parkway in Southern Tennessee, and saw a dead armadillo on the side of the road.

“Remember the armadillo!”

And whatever you do, don’t kick them. They are hard.

Years ago I worked at a Corp of Engineers park on the Mississippi river (in Mississippi). I was a ‘ranger’ or at most park overseer during picnic time and helping the campers with whatever they needed, then locking up the gate at closing time. One night I was closing the gate and out jumps an armadillo. He was running from me, but doing it almost directly at me. I kick it as it was passing to let it know I could kinda protect myself. It was like kicking a moving rock.

re: #176 Charles Johnson

No odds on whether it holds to the 12 hours. I wouldn’t take them in any event. Not based on past behavior during the ongoing conflict.

Israel should use the opportunity to defuse the situation in the West Bank before that gets completely out of hand, but I don’t think they will. They see protests supporting Hamas as more proof that PA can’t be trusted, even though there’s no other alternative. Palestinians do feel for other Palestinians, including those stuck in Gaza even if they don’t agree with Hamas.

Hamas, which should quit while its behind, will use the opportunity to do what it always does - use the conflict to try and turn world opinion against Israel.

It does seem that some people seem to care a whole lot about the suffering in Gaza. Protests in Pakistan call for a day of mourning and end the siege of Gaza and Palestinians.

Curiously, there’s no mention of any such protests or rallies against the slaughter of more than 170,000 in Syria. In fact, that barely gets a mention these days, even though the fighting rages on there.

I’m not relating the two as a way to minimize Palestinian suffering or that Pakistanis don’t have a right to protest against Israel. But there is a double standard/blindness to the evil done by Muslims against other Muslims that takes the violence and slaughter to a completely different level.

Jeffrey Goldberg notes that some of this is due to natural interest and media access. It’s easy to get coverage of the violence in Gaza - whether from IDF sources (which have to check items after media blackout) or from within Gaza (subject to Hamas whims) whereas Syria’s Assad has clamped down on media access while he continues his bloody and brutal war against the opposition forces. You can’t report what you can’t see - and the ease with which you can view the ME conflict between Hamas and Israel means it gets beamed around the world while a sporadic reporting of events in Syria (or Nigeria or Yemen or Afghanistan) only hints at what goes on everywhere else.

The other thing is that we’re talking about the Holy Land - and that is something that has spiritual significance to quite a few people around the world - Muslim, Jew, and Christian. That further drives the media focus. Every action and reaction becomes magnified and reflected in the mirror of choice (pro-Palestinian, pro Israel, etc.).

If you’re opposed to the slaughter and killing, it shouldn’t matter who’s doing the killing and who the victims are. But instead of holding prayer vigils and calling for ceasefires and ending the fighting in Syria and Nigeria and elsewhere, there’s nothing but silence while those conflicts rage, but an inordinate amount of energy devoted to stopping the current Hamas-Israel conflict.

I am officially getting the fuck out of dodge from this new company. Screw these people.

Started last week. Worked all of last week and all of this week. My paycheck was just for last week. I started in the middle of a pay period so the HR drone told me that this check was just for one week. And the 40 hours I worked this week and that I will work next week won’t get paid until the 8th because of their fucked up payroll system. I can’t live like that. It’s unacceptable. I’m basically being asked to stretch one week’s pay for three weeks. Fuck that noise.

For all the things I could say about my last company, at least they paid me everything I was owed even when I started in the middle of a pay period. They just prorated my salary for the first check, but the second one was the full amount.

re: #186 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

Obdi, I don’t know if you’re still here, but I wanted to tell you something. I’ve had a really hard time wrapping my head around the concept of a Jewish atheist—it caused me all kinds of cognitive dissonance, y’know? I know Judaism has a culture just like Islam does, but since it’s neither a race nor a nationality and the culture is based largely on the religion it made my brain hurt to think about how one could identify as a Jewish atheist (I’d feel the same if someone claimed to be a Muslim atheist).

Anyway, as you may or may not be know, I’ve become of huge fan of Amos Oz and ran across this NPR interview with his daughter Fania Oz-Salzberger that also provides an excerpt from a book they wrote together called Jews and Words (both father & daughter are atheists). It’s an excellent interview and the book excerpt was good enough to make me run over to Amazon and buy it because I think they can finally help me get it, just as her dad helped me understand Israel & Israelis better and begin to wrap my head around the I-P mess.

I’m currently about halfway through Panther in the Basement, which I’m enjoying immensely. The kid in the book, Proffy, reminds me so much of Calvin from the Calvin & Hobbes comic strip with his imaginings about about him and his pals (Chita & Ben Hur) being “resistance fighters” (it’s set in 1947 Jerusalem, when the British were still there). It had me laughing out loud so many times. It’s also very, very touching and instructive about hating “the other”.

As soon as I’m done with it I’m going to read Jews and Words, then I’ll move on to his autobiography, A Tale of Love and Darkness. Anyone who has even the slightest interest in historical fiction, Israel, the I-P conflict, or just thoroughly enjoyable reading is missing out if they don’t know him.

Okay, that got WAY longer than I intended. Gonna go start that iftar cornbread now. Later, lizards.

One problem, though. Because I’m considered to be in the LA market, and the Dodgers only broadcast on their own network, I can’t watch the game even though I pay for the MLB package on Directv.

So while the Dodgers have made it impossible for me to watch them on their channel, they can also prevent me from watching them on the SF feed.

That sounds like ‘holdback’. Even the Feds pay that way. You don’t catch up until you quit/retire/die.

Usually five days here; our bi-weekly pay period ends at Sunday night at 2359, we get paid that Friday morning.

Watching a documentary on the “Ghost Army” in WWII. It was the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. They were artists, and regular troops tasked with deceiving the Germans by deceiving other units, They had inflatable tanks and guns, sound trucks to simulate an armored division moving, units that created masses of radio traffic.

Pretty neat.

Embarrassed to say I had to look it up. Torx. And yes, evil. They use torx head screws to put brake rotors on bike wheels, and when disc brakes first got popular, they’d include the Torx wrench with each bike shipped, because none of the bike shops had them.

Little know fact…. The classic Chefs Hat has a special tool to help it hold its shape. Both my grandfathers were classically trained chefs, I have a very old copy of Escoffier’s cookbook from one, and a hat from the other. I even have the tool. They are known as toque torque torx.

re: #297 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

Here, let me make up for it: Happy Feet was directed by the guy who directed the Mad Max movies.

George Miller’s had a pretty varied and successful career:

1979 Mad Max Director, writer
1980 The Chain Reaction Director (car chase sequences), associate producer
1981 Mad Max 2 Director, writer, additional editor
1983 Twilight Zone: The Movie Segment Nightmare at 20,000 Feet director
1983 The Dismissal (TV) Director, writer, producer
1985 Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Director, writer, producer
1987 The Witches of Eastwick Director
1987 The Year My Voice Broke Producer
1989 Dead Calm Producer, 2nd unit director
1991 Flirting Producer
1992 Lorenzo’s Oil Director, writer, producer
1995 Babe Writer, producer
1997 40,000 Years of Dreaming Director, writer, presenter
1998 Babe: Pig in the City Director, writer, producer
2006 Happy Feet Director, writer, producer
2011 Happy Feet Two Director, producer, writer
2015 Mad Max: Fury Road Director, producer, writer

Just for the record, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” is my favorite Twilight Zone: The Movie segment; John Lithgow chewed the scenery up on that one (another related tidbit: Richard Donner [Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, etc.] directed William Shatner in the original 1963 TV episode).

re: #217 CuriousLurker

One can’t be a religious Jewish atheist (i.e. a follower of Judaism who doesn’t believe in God), since it’s a contradiction in terms (there can also be no atheist Christians or Muslims). One can be an ethnic Jew who is an atheist (or a follower of other religion), just like there are Muslim Russians, Christian Arabs and Chinese Mormons. The paradox arises only because English has one word to describe two very different (albeit related) things.
