Rep. Curt Clawson (R-Florida) thoroughly embarrassed himself in Congress yesterday — and inadvertently revealed a streak of bigotry — by mistaking two senior US government officials for representatives from the Indian government, apparently because of their Indian names and dark skins.

It’s another moment brought to us by the Tea Party. This was Clawson’s first day on the Asia and the Pacific subcommittee, after winning a special election to replace Trey Radel, who was forced to resign after his conviction for cocaine possession.
