The Incredible Hulk King-Size Special #1 - October 1968

Arts • Views: 35,667

Featuring an anatomically exaggerated cover by the great Jim Steranko, here’s the first “King-Size Special” (which means it cost 25 cents instead of 12 cents) of Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk series, published in October 1968, purchased by a younger version of me at a small grocery shop on Kaimuki Boulevard and then sealed in a wooden box for 45 years.

My curse is that I read everything. The story was set in South America, and featured Lockjaw, the giant alien bulldog creature.

Eh, not as interesting as a Giant-Size Man-Thing. And comicwise, I’m a Donaldist myself. I’d love to get the Donald/Scrooge comic collections Fantagraphics publishes but they are so damned expensive. Why, you’d have to be some kind of tycoon to own them, like someone with seventeen fantasticatillion dollars or something.

On an unrelated matter, I gave plasma today because I am not a rich man and wanted money. They filled me full of holes, asked me a million questions, hooked me up to a nightmarish machine…

I am in Lviv, Ukraine, and there is a definitely a war on, and not just in the east. Yesterday someone fired an RPG at the mayor’s house; luckily, he was in the country with his family. The mayor of Kremenchuk was killed the same day. A general mobilization has been called.

Life away from the war zone is stressful, and has been since last November. People are on edge, worried about a possible Russian invasion. These sorts of events, and the bomb scares we’ve had lately (pranksters or terrorists, no one knows) don’t help.

This war has backfired on Putin; rather than dividing Ukrainians, it has united them into a real country. It is the youth who are moving the country forward; they consider themselves European, hate Putin, and now all things Russian.

It is reflected in the kitsch and souvenirs; in the market here you can buy Putin door mats (to clean your dirty shoes on) and Putin toilet paper. Putin Huylo t-shirts are quite popular. Flags—Ukrainian and UNO—fly everywhere. And pretty much everything that can be painted yellow and blue has been, including fences, benches, light poles, tractors, and city name signs.

Every town has a memorial to the martyrs of the Maidan and the war dead. People bring flowers, light candles, and weep for our lost youth. Fuck Putin, fuck those Russians who blindly follow him, and fuck his western supporters and enablers (that’s you, Ron Paul and Steven Cohen)!

Eternal Memory to Heroes (Lutsk)

The war is also an enormous shell game. Lots of plausible deniability, whenever some atrocity happens , it is always put down to “rogue elements” who are said to be acting on their own behalf.

I grew up there, it was really a great place to grow up. In the 60’s and 70’s, it was pretty much a bedroom community for the valley(think aerospace). In the mid 60’s we’d hear a low rumble and everything would shake for about 20 seconds. An earthquake? Nope, testing the Saturn-V rocket engines.

I must say, the US really dropped the ball on MH17. Despite the meaningless “military intelligence” press conference we still don’t have the American satellite photos of the Buk, of the launch, or other relevant data. If you say A, say B. The very fact of the American failure to provide evidence is now used by conspiracy theorists.

Just speculation, but perhaps with the international community by and large already pointing the blame at the Ukraine rebels, and by extension their Russian backers, and by extension again, Putin, the US gov’t doesn’tsee the need to make any proof public as opinion is already against the Russians

In such a case they had better kept their mouths shut, because at first making such claims and then failing to prove them only carries water for pro-Putin forces. At least the Russian MoD provided some satellite photos and alleged recorded flight path/radar data, no matter how doubtful they may be. Now the pro-Putin folks are simply laughing at the US claims.

Also, nobody is waiting for anything UN, it has already taken place, and the US had nothing original to say.

Dirty undies spoiled Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s plan to blow up Christmas Day flight from US to Amsterdam

A MAN who tried to blow up a transatlantic flight by detonating explosives in his underpants failed because explosives had become “degraded” after he wore the same underwear for two weeks, it has been claimed.

Known as the “underwear bomber” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was caught trying to blow up a plane on Christmas Day in 2009 en route to the US from Amsterdam.

The plane made an emergency landing in Detroit after the bomb failed to go off, instead causing a fire which left Abdulmutallab with burns to his groin.

US officials traced the bomb plot to al Qaeda and at his trial the 25-year-old Nigerian called the bomb a “blessed weapon” to avenge the mistreatment of Muslims.

John Pistole, head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), told the Aspen Security Forum this week that the explosive device failed because of the length of time Abdulmutallab wore his underpants.

Pistole said “The bomber had had the device with him for over two weeks.”

Asked if this meant the bomb had become damp, he replied: “Let’s say it was degraded.”

My guess is that, it is moronic because that should be one of the first things you learn about explosives, don’t put them in damp places. It’s also moronic because that should be changed more frequently than bi-weekly as a part of regular hygiene.

If someone had told you a few years ago that Marvel would pass over some of the arguably more well-known characters in its library, such as Doctor Strange and Black Panther, and gamble a reported $170 million on a film starring a raccoon and a talking tree, you might have thought they were sniffing too much of Spider-Man’s web fluid.

How did they get all this money? I thought all the cash we send them is used for food, medical supplies, etc?

Security officials say the deal between Hamas and North Korea is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and is being handled by a Lebanese-based trading company with close ties to the militant Palestinian organisation based in east Beirut.

Hamas officials are believed to have already made an initial cash down payment to secure the deal, and are now hoping that North Korea will soon begin shipping extra supplies of weapons to Gaza.

“Hamas is looking for ways to replenish its stocks of missiles because of the large numbers it has fired at Israel in recent weeks,” explained a security official. “North Korea is an obvious place to seek supplies because Pyongyang already has close ties with a number of militant Islamist groups in the Middle East.”

Jeff was born in 1946, prime time for Vietnam service, but he didn’t get around to military service until 1973, when he joined the Army Reserve and deployment to Vietnam was safely off the table.

Which you can often get the money for from the people who you are buying from.

The people selling the weapons to you look good to their higher ups. “See the business we’ve brought in?”

The people lending the money look good to their higher ups. “This money will go to improving the economy in [country]. That’s good for our businesses!”

Since it’s two different parts of the government, who don’t communicate with each other, no one notices that it’s at best a wash. At worst it’s pouring fuel on a fire.

As my favourite author points out, “Armaments are a political necessity but an economic negative.”

Money sunk into armaments essentially disappears from the economy. Most of the stuff manufactured either destroys itself being used or is meant to be destroyed. At best it is sold as a remainder item for much less than it is worth.

One of the main reasons, in my opinion, that the Soviets lost the Cold War is the huge amount of their economy that disappeared into their armed forces. Something like a third of their GDP went into weaponry and an economy can’t handle a load like that. It meant consumer and capital goods weren’t being created and such a weak economy pulled the whole thing down.

Victory? My friend, you cannot win a war. There is no set definition of winning. One cannot both declare a war and then get to decide that war’s end. All of the parties involved must participate and agree (see the Japanese surrender in WWII - they simply said, “Enough with the nukes already, we quit, and we do so to protect our country from extinction.” Many people will say that the US won WWII, but where’s the trophy?

149 NJDhockeyfan  Jul 27, 2014 8:03:23am

Heckuva catch. This would have turned the conflict upside down if Hamas was able to pull this off.

Hamas’ mega-attack through Gaza terror tunnels exposed

Hamas had been planning a surprise attack where 200 fighters would have been dispatched through the dozens of tunnels dug by Hamas under the border from Gaza to Israel. The terror organization aimed to seize kibbutzim and other communities while killing and kidnapping Israeli civilians.

In total, thousands of Hamas terrorists would have been swarming across Israel, wearing IDF uniforms, which would have further complicated an Israeli response. Reports further indicate that Hezbollah may have planned to join the attack as well, opening another front in the north.

The source stressed that the current unplanned war with Hamas inadvertently thwarted a catastrophic event on an apocalyptic magnitude such as the Yom Kippur War, which would have ‘brought the State of Israel to its knees.’ The destruction of these tunnels takes away from Hamas a strategic weapon it has been working on and investing in heavily for years according to the source.

Each tunnel has arteries, veins, offshoots as well as offshoots of offshoots designed in intricate and complex arrangements. As one Israeli spokesman said, “There are two Gazas, one above ground and one below ground: an underground terrorist city.”

I’m suspicious of the claim.

An anonymous source in Israel’s intel makes an extraordinary claim of enemy intent. OK, I understand the need for anonymity, but the extraordinary level of the claim requires supplemental proof. And no, the tunnels aren’t them. The thousands of IDF uniforms these alleged attackers were going to be wearing would be a great example. The reporting yesterday (via AP,, I did a page on it) 1st stated that Israel offered a 4 hour extension of the (at the time) current cease fire, which Hamas answered by sending rockets Israels way

Shortly after it was updated that Israel was extending the truce by 24 hours

Both versions had Israel saying that despite stopping most air/ ground operations they would continue to seek out and destroy the tunnels

That’s the original IDF title, not mine. Send your strongly worded letter to them. There isn’t much of an actual military threat from Gaza. Except, famously, for the ceasefire that Hamas went along with in 2008, to the point of arresting dissident groups that were firing rockets and mortars at Israel.

Did you really not know about that?

Also, the phrase ‘that’s just the way it is’ is supremely pointless, aside from being eye-rollingly passive-aggressive.

Mini cease-fires are like TV timeouts in football. I can hear the coaches now…”Ahmed, your rockets are flying, but you’re not shouting ‘God is great!’ loud enough…I can barely hear you over the whoosh.”

“Now go out there and hit the holes (tunnels) hard. Block those bullets like your life depended on it! And when you pass that rock(et), make sure it’s on target”

But weaponry is the world’s largest international business and no country believes they can do without it.

Odd, isn’t it, we have a president with a direct personal connection to two poor nations in the developing world, one who grew up a minority subject to the fear and loathing of the majority of his own native land, yet seems to have little concern for similar people here or abroad.

I’m not shocked. This is what careerism and the drive to power does to people’s minds. The President is a man of his class.

It’s frustrating to see so many people think the State Dept is some sort of independent entity with its own foreign policy agenda. The plan Kerry is proposing is the White house plan. Although State Dept has a hand in drafting it, they report to the executive. How well Kerry delivers Obama’s plan is the issue.

Simon Cowell under fire over IDF donation

British reality shows judge Simon Cowell is being virtually attacked these days by Pro-Palestinian activists over a $150,000 donation to the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) association.

The donation was made about a year ago during a Los Angeles fundraiser organized by Israeli-American businessman Haim Saban, who managed to raise some NIS 70 million ($20 million) to fund IDF soldiers’ studies and help their families.

Although it is considered a generous donation for Israel , it’s not such a big sum for one of the wealthiest people on television, whose fortune is estimated at more than $300 million

…As a result, Cowell began receiving images of dead Palestinian children on Twitter and has been accused of helping Israel invade Gaza.

One of the tweets said Cowell has “blood on your hands,” while another comment included a picture of a father holding his dead baby and read: “You donated money to Israel to do this. Now imagine this was your child.”

Someone else wrote that “Simon Cowell donated £100,000 to the IDF to impress his Jewish girlfriend.” Another comment accused him of taking orders from his “masters in Tel Aviv.”

I MAY (pretty certain) be adopting a 6 month old GSD mix that has the name of Freida. Freida reminds me of a certain unibrow artist and I hate the name.

So, If anyone has a suggestion for a good dog call name that is similar, I’d appreciate the input.

Baby name directories are not supplying anything on which the family can agree.

I liked Frauke “little lady”, but my kid said that sounded like “crazy german lady”. The obvious Frankie, Frantzie and Fritzi were also veto’d.

*sigh*

“Fartie”

is also not an option.

Is there some sort of requirement for being an RWNJ talking head that you have to be dumber than a bag of hammers? WTF.

Not dumb, just loyal to be the point of being inflexible and ridiculous.

A member of my family was named Freda. She always answered when I called her “mom”. :)

That goes for anyone arguing that the people of Gaza “elected” Hamas, for whatever reason. The majority may have voted for Hamas 8 years ago, but what’s happening now in Gaza is in no way an elected government.

Technically Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian elections with a plurality, not a majority, of the vote, 44.45%. They took a mere 40.82% of the constituency seat vote.

It’s potentially plausible that a majority of Gazans voted for them, but I haven’t actually seen this proven anywhere. Hamas did win the battle of Gaza that ensued the following year when we backed a failed Fatah coup against the unity government, as Bush was unhappy with the results of the ill advised elections he had championed.

Absolutely true.

I also think it’s totally facile to have ‘do you or do you not beat your wife’ questioning such as ‘is Hamas a terrorist organization or not?’

Because if Hamas is terrorist (yes) then Israel justified wholly, end of discussion.

Most of the ‘discussions’ about IP are really efforts to not have discussions in the first place. Greenwald plays his part - Israel sucks and all arguments revolve around here’s why.

It’s the same way that we in the USA! USA! USA! ended up with a lunatic majority in the House of Representatives.

Hannity’s escapade the other day yelling at a Palestinian to answer the question of whether Hamas was a terrorist organization or not is the other side of the coin from Greenwald.

They both represent large constituencies who contribute to stasis, not change.

Speaking of the lunatic majority:

“I think the House will come with a skinnied-down bill in terms of money,” Cornyn said. He also said he expected the House to incorporate a plan he has proposed with Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas to try to speed up deportation of Central American child migrants.

Many Democrats, led by Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, have opposed that plan, which would amend a 2008 law that allows child migrants from countries other than Mexico and Canada to stay in the country as their cases work through a backed-up system.

“My view is a solution beats no solution any day,” Cornyn said. “And nobody has offered an alternative, so I hope we will act.”

Cornyn and Cuellar are idiots. The answer isn’t sending these kids back to the hell they just risked their lives to escape. It’s listening to them and trying to find a place for them here as refugees. They’re children. They’re not cartel gangbangers.

There is a solution, you morons. It’s the request that the President sent you for more money to get judges in there to clear out the backup. Sending these kids back is not a solution, it’s avoiding the problem.

The GOP is all about avoiding the problem these days. They’re just going to pout and say no to everything until a white guy with an (R) after his name is in the White House again.

Freya perhaps? My one friend has been giving dogs deity names - they had a “Thor”, and have an “Athena” right now. All German Shepherds.
