Sunday Night Jam: Los Lobos, “Short Side of Nothing”

Crows up on the rooftop, laughing out my name
Music • Views: 28,764

Here’s a great song from East LA’s own Los Lobos, performed live on eTown.

Dreams wash down the gutter
All my hopes in vain
Crows up on the rooftop
Laughing out my name

Here I am on the short side of nothing
Here I am on the short side of nothing

We danced all night as life stood by
We told another lie
Found a spot down by the roadside
There I closed my eyes

And here I am on the short side of nothing
Here I am on the short side of nothing
All alone, all alone
Can’t find my way home

Summer has come and the heat hangs low
No escape in sight
Sirens scream and lovers moan
Just like any other night

And here I am on the short side of nothing
Here I am on the short side of nothing
All alone, all alone
Can’t find my way home

David Hidalgo:

What guitars do you bring to a typical Los Lobos show these days?
I’ve been using a Fender Custom Shop ‘51 Nocaster Relic lately. When Los Lobos started out back in 1973, it was an all acoustic group. We were on a quest to learn Mexican folk music—the music of our roots, our culture—and little by little we started to incorporate electric instruments. These days I take my goldtop Les Paul and the Nocaster on the road. I feel that Gibson and Fender got solidbody electric guitars right the first time around, and guitars haven’t gotten any better.

One of the truly great bands.

So I already posted one of the Multnomah pictures, but while we were there and I was waiting for the husband to climb down from the top (see the mentioned fear of heights) I was fooling around with my long-exposures-no-tripod photos at the bottom when the sun came out.

Since the lens-flare proceeded to make good photos impossible, I played with it a little and then went back to the car, but here’s the post-processing on one of them, since I’m playing with photos.

If I could have cut down that damn bush…

I have absolutely no idea.

The husband had just Sherman Pass left to do of the trans-Sierras routes so we did that this trip to start, before finishing our drive of 395 in its currently-signed entirety (we made it to the Canada border on a previous trip, down to Pendleton, OR, and north from where it starts on I-15 to Susanville, CA, so it was just that section left).

As always, the bowling alley in Bishop, CA was lovely.

Drinks were Sad Kitteh approved.

Never say never. Their authority figures have lied to them so long, and with ever increasing scale and number of the lies, that they have lost the compass which tells them what lies they can get away with.

Which means that it is only a matter of time before the authority figures tell a lie which not even a hardened wingnut will believe, followed by a spate of lies of the same type, causing a significant number of wingnuts ideological framework to suffer a cascading failure.

I mean, it happened to Charles, so it will happen to others, what matters is the critical mass of lies which sets the landslide off.

Which admittedly can be very large for ERWNJ’s.

It may seem like beating a dead horse, but when dealing with deniers it’s important to have as much evidence as possible.

1. The AP journalists who reported seeing the Buk did this before the catastrophe, which means that their eyewitness report is independent.

2. Paris Match published yet another photo of the Buk on that specific truck (white cabin, blue line). The Buk itself is barely visible, but the phone number on the truck could now be read. So they found and interviewed the owner of truck and it turns out that it had been confiscated by … surprise surprise, the DNR thugs.

Meanwhile, Caribou Barbie has launched her own online subscription-based TV channel.

In a Facebook post late Sunday evening, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee announced the Sarah Palin Channel, an interactive, online network designed as an alternative to mainstream news media.

“This is a news channel that really is a lot more than news,” Palin said in a video introducing the network. “This is a community where we’re going to be able to share ideas and discuss the issues of the day. And we’re going to find solutions.”

The network will cost $9.95 per month or $99.95 annually for subscribers.

Sarah Palin will be laughing all the way to the bank; I have little doubt that there’s plenty of subscribers suckers out there willing to pony up to join the echo chamber.

Of course; nonetheless, it sounds like Sarah has come up with a great grift; even better than starting her own political party. She does have her hardcore contingent of true believers, and I’m sure the money will flow in, at least at first it will. Whether it grows from there is anyone’s guess, but I’m pretty sure she won’t be giving FNC too much competition, aside from those who think that FNC is ‘too liberal’.

Wingnut talking point of the day:

NO, if you actually read the article this talking point is based on “Right to work” does not increase worker’s pay.

The “higher compensation per capita” was calculated by adding up ALL THE MONEYS (salaries, dividends, capital gains, welfare, social security, all of it) and DIVIDING BY THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE STATE.

Since they threw the 1% into the mix, of course that’s going to in skew the results upward.

But since we’re talking about Michigan, the auto bailout created a whole bunch of white-collar, professional jobs for high pay since people with those skills are scarce., and also there are still a bunch of Union workers.

The “right-to-work” non-Union poor shmucks still make the lowest incomes in the state.

I cannot believe something like the Ex-Im bank has the idiots in Congress in an uproar. WTF.

Export-Import Bank faces danger from all sides

The skirmishes on the left and the right underscore the growing political divisions that have emerged over a bank few Americans had even heard of only several weeks ago. With Ex-Im’s charter set to expire at the end of September, its supporters are struggling to narrow the opinion gap between businesses that rely on its financing for sales in risky foreign markets and tea party conservatives who see the bank’s loan, guarantee and insurance programs as a distortion of the free market and a form of corporate welfare.

With the government’s funding also due to expire after Sept. 30, Democrats have said they could raise the stakes by linking the bank’s reauthorization to a stopgap spending measure that would avert another shutdown.

If they shut down the government over this, I will be amazed.

My understanding of the real-world issues is that Koch is big enough not to need Ex-Im’s services, and getting rid of it would kneecap his competitors. Whether it’s because of this or some insane libertoonian fixation I don’t know, but that would be the effect.

Morning all. Looks like mild weather for the week and a cool intro into August.

Seeing the Los Lobo comments and music associated with this thread brings up a sad memory.

Back in the long-ago, 1987 or 1988 can’t remember exactly, the guys I played music with had an opportunity that popped up quickly to open for Los Lobos at a small club (Staches) on High Street just a few blocks up from Ohio State. Apparently the show came together quick and the owner of the club was looking for an opener and my cousin, our lead guitar player, knew the guy who booked the shows and got us the chance to do it.

But as with all bands, not everyone was on the same page at all times (if ever!) and our keyboard player said he couldn’t do it because it came up too quick and he hadn’t planned on it. A few days later he quit the band.

Yeah, we were bummed. Not that it would have been a launch to a big career…but it would have been a nice deal and helped us get a bit better known around town. Sigh.

I’d bet money that’s the only reason they’re on a crusade against Ex-Im. So many smaller companies rely on it to help them go overseas. It’s insane to target them for closure. Ex-Im is profitable, FFS. They make billions more than they spend. Why in the world would you target a successful program unless you’re trying to kneecap the competition so you can maybe acquire them?

Personally, I think that is the natural human state.

There are anomalies, such as the time we are now in, but overall democracy and freedom are too much work of the spiritual and intellectual nature to be popular. Neither the peasants nor the lords have to do much thinking or sacrificing under an authoritarian system.

People would rather strain their backs or their stomachs than their brains.

There’s a practical issue- the motor vehicle license plate is open and obvious. There’s no need for the law enforcement to stop the vehicle to check it against databases. The stop can happen, after the plate is run with the new crop of plate scanners since states require vehicles to have plates in open and obvious locations.

In order to run an individual’s firearm license, one would have to stop the individual to question them, obtain the license, and then run it (or the gun serial number) to see whether they’re legitimate.

re: #85 lawhawk

Yes. That’s exactly my point. We can verify that someone is a legal driver—or at least that the car is legal—very easily. We can’t do that with guns. Therefore, since the right to carry a gun around is one regulated by the state, having police be able to stop people with guns and verify the legality of the gun is completely reasonable.

re: #87 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

The only problem with this is the amount of dead cops we’d be seeing, when the Oppressed Gun Nut kills the officer for daring to question him about his gunpowder-powered Holy Relic that Jesus and Washington bestowed on him.

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG????

Why do I suspect that one reason someone suggested this is that if they do “opt out” that means that the following happens:
1) There is not any sort of salary increase, just that part of the existing salary is no longer withheld.
2) The employer is no longer responsible for any FICA amount at all - so an “opt out” is actually of benefit to the employer.

And in addition it looks like no serious thought is given to what happens to any low-income earners who fail to save on their own. They will be pretty much penniless and haven’t been putting into Soc. Sec. and thus would not be getting any benefits back out. I guess their families are expected to support them since otherwise they’d just be “moochers” on the public dime.

#YouMightBeAConservative if you laugh at French military prowess and ignore the cognitive dissonance when the French were roundly defeated by the Nazis in WWII despite having a military that had more tanks and planes than the Nazis did at the start of the war but think that a few guys with guns would have stopped the Nazis in their tracks.

The French are a bad example —remember the Maginot line?

That’s a hefty gestation period with very little to show for it. Typically a start up wants to put out as much content as possible because that’s what is needed to satisfy the investors and is necessary to build brand identity and product loyalty.

The Intercept/First Look is doing none of that. They’re ignoring all the typical metrics, and their publication schedule is irregular and one has to wonder just where all the money is going, because it’s not showing on the pages they’ve published.

I’m well aware of the Maginot Line. Strategy, tactics, and the material equipment that the French had during WWII shows the folly of claiming that a few Jews with guns could have stopped the Holocaust.

The French fortified their border, they had more of, and had more modern jets and tanks than the Nazis, and yet the French still lost.

The tanks didn’t make a difference.

The planes didn’t make a difference.

All the fortifications didn’t make a difference.

The Nazis still overran France. Yet the right wingers think that if a few Jews had guns, they would have been saved from the Holocaust.

The Nazis also made short order of the Polish as well. Heck, the Nazis pushed hundreds of miles into the Soviet Union and were at the door of Moscow and laid siege to Stalingrad and Leningrad and Kursk. Millions of troops, tens of thousands of tanks and planes and the Soviets just barely hung on to eventually begin the push back to Berlin.

The fact is that of the more than 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust, only about 110,000 were actually German Jews. The bulk of those genocide of the Holocaust were Polish and Russian - Jews living in territories overrun by the Nazis. Those were Jews living in countries that had actual armies, navies, and air forces.

That’s the point - entire armies fell to the Nazis, so to think that a few Jews with guns could have stopped the Nazi onslaught is ahistorical.

Boehner Op-Ed: I Oppose The Law I’m Suing Obama To Implement

Boehner revealed the political awkwardness of the lawsuit by reiterating his opposition to the law he intends to sue the president for delaying administratively.

“I oppose the employer mandate in the president’s health care law. The House of Representatives has voted to delay or eliminate it (and we will do so again if we prevail in court),” he wrote. “But it is the letter of the law that was passed by Congress and signed by President Obama. He simply cannot unilaterally rewrite it.”

Because suing POTUS over a law you don’t want enforced in the first goddamn place makes sense. WTF. If you’re suing him to implement the law then what the fuck were the 50+ repeal attempts for aside from fundraising off the rubes?

LIES! OBUMMER NEEDS SNOWDEN!

NSA: Less need now for Snowden deal

“As time goes on, the utility for us of having that conversation becomes less,” NSA Deputy Director Rick Ledgett said during an appearance Saturday at the Aspen Security Forum. “It’s been over a year since he had access to our networks and our information so the need for us to understand that greater level of detail is lesser and lesser.”

Ledgett was the first U.S. official to public discuss the possibility of amnesty or leniency for Snowden, telling “60 Minutes” in an interview aired last December that it was “worth having conversations about” such a deal if it could stem the tide of leaks. The discussion Saturday was framed slightly differently, focusing on obtaining a better idea of what Snowden copied from NSA systems and reportedly gave to journalists.

Ledgett’s remarks signal that lawyers for Snowden might have a weaker bargaining position over time. However, the NSA official also suggested that the damage Snowden did to NSA operations will also diminish with time because terrorist groups and foreign militaries change their communication methods from time to time anyway.

Wayne Allyn Root Accidentally Admits His Obama Conspiracy Theory Is Bogus

After spending years insisting that Obama was a complete ghost at Columbia — “It’s the story of the Manchurian candidate” — Root somehow continues to also assert that Obama did indeed attend Columbia where he studied how to destroy America from within.

In his ironically titled post, “I Can Put Obama At The Scene Of The Crime,” the conservative commentator says everything Obama knows, he learned at Columbia.

“It’s all according to plan - a plan Obama learned at Columbia,” writes the pundit who earlier suggested the president never attended Columbia. “Everything Obama does, and everything happening to the U.S. economy, all started at Columbia. The entire Obama agenda to overwhelm the system, destroy capitalism and murder the middle class was hatched at Columbia.”

It’s not a surprise. The value of Snowden’s stash depreciates rather quickly. Even when it was still fresh, many of the documents exposed were pretty old by Internet standards.

Add to that the time the forensics team has had to retrace Snowden’s actions, and it adds to pretty much nothing useful is left in his stash. GG & Co. must also know this, but could care less about Snowden’ts fate.

Either with open-carry, or concealed. It’s often completely possible to see that someone is carrying a concealed weapon, especially if your’e trained to look for it.

For the purpose of simplicity, let’s stick to CCW at least a moment. How often was stop and frisk coming up with false alarms? I think that was too often IIRC. A bulge in a coat can be many things.

That law depending on some very significant details of how it works on the street day to day could be a very good thing or just an instrument to discourage CCW. How well is that going to work with a black man with a CCW? Strike a fair balance and I’m in. Fail to do that and I’m not.

Open carry? I have mixed feeling leaning to allowing the stop and chat. Again I have a hesitation on how fairly that is actually done.

BarbWire Pundit Thinks Obama Is Bringing ISIS Members Into America

As I’ve written repeatedly, the American people-including African-Americans and other Blacks-are being replaced. Obama and the Dems know the onslaught is coming against them this November because of their never-ending attacks against us all. Too many people for the Democrats’ liking have awakened to the truth…as the polls now affirm. Therefore, it’s time to replace the current population in the US to incorporate non-English speakers who will vote for anyone who gives them free stuff; something in which the Obama crime syndicate excels. And don’t think that these are just children. Obama has already brought in hundreds if not thousands of MS-13 gang members and Islamists…including ISIS/ISIL members.

As few seem interested in saving their country-or even themselves-better think about how much ammo you have on hand. The ObamaGestapo won’t go against the criminal element, folks. They’re coming for those who follow the US Constitution and US law. That’s us…

Damn

Air strike at outpatient clinic at the main Gaza hospital and another at a Refugee camp.

No details, but casualties streaming in.

NBC doesn’t need details, they just go with whatever their first guess is. So far they have already changed the headline on their article twice. From Israel bombed the hospital and refugee camp, to Israel bombed the refugee camp but hit the hospital with a drone strike (“witnessed” by an NBC reporter), to…

Drone Strike? Israel Hits Refugee Camp, Near Main Gaza Hospital.

It is, but constituents are not exactly thrilled when they have a hard time getting or keeping health insurance, so they start complaining to their elected officials about the mess.

Of course, in true political fashion, said representatives will just find someone else to blame it on. Since Bryant is a conservative wingnut, he naturally blames Obama for everything that’s wrong with Mississippi.

I told my wife after I become naturalized I may run for governor someday. I’m still seriously considering it.

I’m not a fan of the presidential vacation memes. Many of the WH occupants hated being there because it was such a controlled environment. They’d rather go to Camp David or their own homes/ranches/compounds, if that was feasible.

They’re still working even when they’re away from the WH. Photo ops are just that. Photo ops - whether it’s clearing brush or playing golf.

The President gets his PDBs regardless of where in the world he is. He’s still apprised of world events.

But if these nitwits think that Obama’s taken too many vacations, where are their complaints about how Congress has only about 20 days scheduled to work between now and November. By my count, there should be about 60 work days. Even if you give off for all the Jewish Holidays and Labor Day and Columbus Day, you’d still have more than twice the number of days Congress scheduled. Who’s slacking off there?

So yesterday I downloaded the Red Alert: Israel app.

An alarm sounds every time a rocket warning is issued. It has been very disruptive and annoying, going off at very inconvenient times. Like while I’m bathing my girls, while driving, trying to read, meeting a friend…

But wait, that’s just an app with an alarm.

IMAGINE THIS WAS FOR REAL?!?!

Well for millions of Israelis it is.

The terror of a rocket landing on your home, or in your child’s bedroom is a reality that we - living outside of Israel - cannot fathom.

But the sad reality is, for all Israelis this has become routine.

Alarm just went off as I’m typing this.

11th Circuit upholds ‘Docs v. Glocks’ law in First Amendment challenge
A federal appeals court is allowing enforcement of a Florida law that prevents physicians from talking with patients about guns in their homes when it is irrelevant to medical care.

The Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday vacated an injunction that had prevented the law from taking effect and found in a facial challenge that the law does not violate the First Amendment. The Associated Press and the Daily Report (reg. req.) have stories; How Appealing links to additional coverage and the opinion (PDF).

The law says physicians should not ask whether a patient or patient’s family owns guns, unless the physician has a good-faith belief that the “information is relevant to the patient’s medical care or safety, or the safety of others.” The law also bans irrelevant gun information from being entered into medical records. Violation of the law, dubbed “Docs v. Glocks,” constitutes grounds for disciplinary action, and doctors can be fined or lose their licenses, reports the AP.

There’s a whole lot of wishful thinking in that piece, considering Hamas’ statements about long term aspirations. Gazans would certainly benefit from loosening the restrictions on movement, trade, and it would reduce the need to operate smuggling tunnels between Gaza and Egypt (though it would likely persist to avoid tariffs imposed on transactions). A wealthier populace could be less tolerant of the use of force that would devastate what could be built if a true ceasefire were operative. It could have a moderating effect on the radicalization that Hamas uses to stay in power.

What would Israel get out of this? Quiet along its most troublesome border, and it would let Israel devote more resources to other enterprises. However, it runs counter to current Israeli govt thinking about the strategic goals of Hamas and the need to contain that threat.

I’m sure the doctor’s ability to talk about Jesus with their patients is still massively protected.

Well he did bailout the auto industry, but all that did was create a bunch of YOONYUN & white-collar professional jobs. JUST LIKE HITLER!

Even with the auto bailout he was continuing a policy supported by his predecessor. As well as Ronald Reagan in the 80s, when Chrysler was bailed out. The notion that there’s some connection to Hitler or a fascist ideology is laughably absurd. Especially in light of bipartisan support for most of what’s labeled Hitler-like about Obama. It’s shit people imagine when their hatred of the president rules out anything else.

The Chrysler bail-out happened in 1979 (ehr, just like Hitler). /
