Don’t Expect Much From ‘First Look Media’ for Several Years

A very relaxed publishing schedule
Media • Views: 24,136

Have you noticed that for all the promotion and hype and promises, there hasn’t been a lot of… journalism happening at Pierre Omidyar’s very expensive journalism project, First Look? Not to mention the weeks that often go by before lonely articles appear at Greenwald’s branch, The Intercept?

Well, Pierre would like you to know it’s no big deal, because it’s probably going to take years before they figure out what they’re actually doing over there. Yes, years.

I expect we’ll be in this planning, startup and experimental mode for at least the next few years as we explore how to become integrated into people’s lives in meaningful ways. During that time, we’re going to continually test new ideas and approaches to use technology and journalism to achieve our mission.

A quarter of a billion dollars in funding and no need for advertising income sure takes the pressure off. No rush, folks. I’m sure it will be incredibly awesome some time around 2018.

$250 million to sit around in the planning, startup and experimental stages for several years? How do I sign up for that gig?

There are entrepreneurs here in Austin who would kill for that kind of cash so they can bring their ideas to life now, but First Look is going to just wallow for a few years until they finally get it together? Pffft. Weak.

People, please… Pray that God cuts short the Obama presidency, and punishes all those who enabled it, and erases their foul works from the face of the earth.

We have sinned against the Lord, and this Regime has been imposed on us as a scourge. But now the tool used by the Lord boasts itself against Him, and takes His name in vain. We confess our sins, O God-now save us. Not for our sakes, but for your own holy name’s sake.

Rid us of these wicked, lawless rulers. Amen.

Speaking of…Yesterday a lizard, pretty good size at about 7-8 inches, got caught up in my bird netting covering my vegetable garden. I thought I had it clamped down tight enough to avoid something like this, but evidently not.

Anyway, when I went to water yesterday morning, this poor guy looked dead. He was all caught up in the loose mesh twisted several times around his neck. He was just hanging there, still. But as I watered I saw him move just a bit. Ran in the house, grabbed some sharp scissors and gloves and proceeded to slowly and carefully cut him loose.

Took several minutes and he was very still the whole time. Finally cut the last piece from his neck and he dropped to the ground and shot off like a bat out of hell.

I gotta go find some better; softer, finer mesh to keep the birds out.

True, Israel doesn’t have many friends but they have some business to attend to. I don’t think leaving the tunnels and rockets up to negotiated settlements is a realistic option for Israel. Hamas isn’t going to give them up in exchange for anything.

Hamas has kept to several ceasefires in the past.

That’s ALL she’s basing this on. I just told her if she doesn’t give her dog his shots he’s not coming to my house to play with my dog or I won’t keep him while she goes on vacation again. She hung up on me.

It never once occurs to people like this to do some actual science-y type research to see if it’s bullshit or not. Makes. Me. Crazy.

I think this boils down to having appreciation and respect for professions. Some of this appreciation has to do with compensation, yes. But other has to do with respecting the knowledge the other professions bring. I prefer to defer to the actual professionals in their fields to know what they are doing, or if they don’t, to have a better clue of what they are doing than I do. But some people, because they can do simple things, think themselves as instant experts and that they should have equal or more standing than those that have dedicated themselves to their fields.

Until we start to collectively shun these type of just-add-water instant experts on all fields, the overall situation won’t get any easier.

Update:

Added the last paragraph.

Shouldn’t they have worked out all the kinks, purpose of the site, et cetera, et cetera before they opened for business?

I’m no expert, but I’ve always heard small businesses, when they apply for a loan, have to work out all the A to Z details of their business before they’re approved for a loan.

Seems to be a matter of a rich guy with way too much money and time on his hands than he knows what to do with.

So Haaretz doesn’t know were the leaked documents that they received and then published (first) came from? Weird.
