As most of you know, I’m an aspiring poet. If may be so humble, I’m quite pleased with my latest work. Here’s a sample:

TYRANT

Sheets of cold rain pour down from the clouds,
covering the sullen, black dressed mourning crowds.
Row after row of fresh looking white crosses,
Has there been anything gained from these terrible losses?

It’s just one more ceremony, another farewell,
to more brave young men who couldn’t make it through hell.
You listen to the speeches and the notes of the dirge,
And through every moment, there’s not but a surge

Of emotion, of morals, of human expression.
Just an unstoppable combat obssession.
“It’s just part of the game” that’s what you say,

I understand. I volunteer with a small group at Church. Recently we had an unpleasant incident. The details are not relevant here, but suffice to say I saw some awful behavior from otherwise very levelheaded people.
Really makes me sad .

First time I ever heard of “roof knocking.” Kind of weird. I think there’s a time and place for wars sometimes but not in this case. Not within a civilian population such as Gaza. No matter how hideous Hamas and other elements might be. It’s horrible. Was looking at some images earlier. We can’t bring back the dead. And yes, many have brought up Syria as a comparison but the difference here is that it’s Israel. We expect this kind of brutality from people like Assad, but not Netanyahu.

When I heard that Avigdor Lieberman was coming back as Foreign Minister, it was a sign that the Israeli government was swinging very disturbingly to the far right.

Netanyahu is a political animal. Both sides to this conflict are using domestic politics as the fuel for their policies. Bibi was roundly criticized during cast lead for doing a half job and losing Israeli lives in the process. In the south, they believed their govt left them as sacrificial lambs without protection from the rockets. He won’t let that happen again.
Hamas which was deeply weakened politically such that they actually entered into an agreement with the PA recently. Hamas seized on an opportunity to do the one thing they know how to do. Fight. To surrender without substantial change to the blockade would be disaster for them.

The borders have already been more or less agreed to already with land swaps etc. It’s not really that contentious of an issue. What’s holding up the deal is ownership of Al Aqsa, right of return, capital in Jerusalem.

What we also know is that the Malaysia Airlines jet was brought down by a missile that was fired from the ground. But he did say, whether it was — this is a quote here — “whether it was the Russians themselves that pulled the trigger or Russian separatists trained by Russians, it’s all the same, and it all goes back ultimately to Vladimir Putin.”

So that is an indication that, based on somebody who has reviewed the classified intelligence assessments, that President Putin is responsible. And that is why we are coordinating with the international community on a response that targets Russia for their actions.

I don’t get how this is either an ugly or offensive generalization. Is the problem here that he’s saying “Russians” instead of the Russian govt./military?

Even the usage “the Russians” to mean “Russia” is idiotic (see the recent discussions about “the Palestinians” here), but Putin already is “Russia” in the political sense, so this juxtaposition is naturally interpreted as “Putin and the Russian people”, even if something else was meant.

Who they send to the negotiating table now would be up to them. if they want to send a mission that includes the PLO, Fatah AND Hamas then the ONLY way I would accept that (if I were an Israeli negotiator) is if Hamas amends their charter to recognizing Israel as a legit state

I agree. If there’s any hope in reforming Russia long-term, it’s in reaching the population. It doesn’t help when we play the group blame game. This guy is a brain scientist? Is he experimenting on his own?

Police told the newspaper that it’s not generally illegal to carry a semi-automatic rifle into the airport terminal, but Steinmetz was arrested because of “the way he was carrying it.”

The physician had bought a cup of coffee and then stopped in front of some gates in the non-secure area of Terminal Four, where he accidentally pointed the muzzle at a woman and her 17-year-old daughter.

The women told police they feared for their safety.

Steinmetz was arrested about 10:30 a.m. on two felony counts of disorderly conduct with a weapon.

He told officers that he had no other business at the airport besides buying a cup of coffee.

Because going to the airport is so much more convenient than the corner store.

This was a dry run. This guy will be in the news again soon.

My grandmother (then 10 years old) said the flu epidemic was the worst event of her life, which is saying a lot since she lived to be 105. Seven of her twenty-eight fifth grade classmates died, along with her teacher, a couple of cousins and many other people she knew. A lot of people thought it was literally the end of the world, that everyone might die within a few more weeks; as indeed they would have if the death rate had continued at its peak level. October 1918 still has the highest number of registered deaths of any month in US history, despite the population having increased 250% since then.
During some kind of flu scare a few years ago, in about 2010, some yokel media types contacted her and wanted to interview her about the 1918 epidemic. She was apparently the only person they could find who could both remember it and describe it coherently. It’s set in a fictional logging town, Commonwealth, Wash., during the 1918 pandemic.
The town tried to quarantine itself, but it didn’t work.

Since the ‘94 midterms, Republicans have accomplished the following:

• Two government shutdowns
• One impeachment, with a second being a real possibility
• Started a unnecessary war in Iraq that has massively destabilized the region
• Destroyed the economy by trying to fight two wars while cutting taxes
• Literally stopped working because a black man has been elected POTUS twice

And how have they been punished for their cravenness? By constantly being elected/re-elected to office. FFS, they essentially had control of all three branches of government from 2001 to 2007.

I’m sorry, I’m just tired of hearing how the GOP is Whigging out.

Because it ain’t going to happen.

Because a good chunk of Americans are too stupid or too idealogical to see how fucking crazy this party has been behaving since 1992.

I mean, look at the GOP now: unapologetic racism; guns; Bible trumps all; rape is not a big deal; women are second class citizens when it comes to their healthcare.

I do understand and agree with the sentiment that a loss in 2016 would be devesating for the GOP but a lot of people thought they’d have a serious decline after 2008 and we saw the 2010 midterms. Now it is true that the GOP has alienated a lot of important voter blocks in the mean time since but all it takes is voters with a short term memory and a simplistic GOP sales push. I’m cautiously optimistic frankly.

I’ve been fairly silent on this since I have little good to say about it. I’m distraught at innocents getting killed. I am disgusted with most of the rhetoric since it is the standard hate-filled crap that just renews the cycles of violence and empowers those that advocate continued violence, wastage, and killing.

I recognize at least in theory the motivations behind the actions by the parties involved, but generally don’t agree with a lot of the policies. It is a quagmire, and I don’t see any realistic solution leading to peace coming up in either the short term of a few years, or possibly even the next decade. It’s the definition of insanity, with a lot of people who simply want to peacefully live their lives caught in the middle.

During the ongoing civil war in Syria, it is possible to view Syrians bombing the crap out of each other from the Golan Heights inside Israel. There is a morbid curiosity to what is going on.

Those in Southern Israel have to live knowing that they’re in missile range of Hamas attacks, just as surely as the IDF can throw its weight against Gaza. They too are in the cross fire, if not now, then at some point in the future.

Given Israel’s small population, those watching may also have family members active in the current Gaza operations, and they’re watching knowing that their family is directly in harms’ way.

The biggest problem with the youth vote is disaffection from politics in general, which is partially because of the sabotage from the GOP to the government and country in general. But in general, the data shows that younger people are more anti-GOP than anything else. They may not get out and vote, apathy may be a problem, but that still saps the GOP’s base as the older generation ages out of voting and the younger takes its place.

Several years ago our AmStaff (RIP) had to have surgery on his leg.
In the 30 minutes it took to drive home from the vet’s office, he had chewed the Cone of Shame to shreds and started removing staples from the very long incision.
So much for post-surgery anesthesia lethargy…

I was supposed to put one of those cones on Austin when I brought him home from having stomach surgery, but I didn’t have the heart for it, just hoped he wouldn’t dig at his incision, which he didn’t at all. The biggest problem with the youth vote is disaffection from politics in general, which is partially because of the sabotage from the GOP to the government and country in general. But in general, the data shows that younger people are more anti-GOP than anything else. They may not get out and vote, apathy may be a problem, but that still saps the GOP’s base as the older generation ages out of voting and the younger takes its place.

Not just youth. I no longer watch politics on TV. I find it too loathsome; all gamesmanship, nothing remotely useful to any average voter. I hope kids stay involved via the web, but who knows.

House GOP cuts border funding bill

House Republicans will unveil a significantly pared-back emergency funding package of $659 million for the border crisis and are angling for a Thursday vote before Congress flees Washington for the August recess.

That figure is dramatically lower than the $3.7 billion that President Barack Obama originally requested from Capitol Hill to respond to the influx of unaccompanied children, primarily from Central America, at the Texas border.

It’s also a far cry from the $1.5 billion in emergency funding that was initially proposed last week by House Republicans.

Thing is, this proposal is essentially the same as all the other ones - the ones that failed. The wording is essentially interchangable, so the difference is that the parties must be sensing that there’s nothing to be gained from continuing the fight for now.

IMO, the Israeli strikes on the Gaza power station was overly harsh and doesn’t accomplish what Israel needs - which is to convince Gazans that Hamas is bad for their health. It reinforces the notion that Israel will collectively punish Gazans for the acts of Hamas. Media will pick up on this, and Hamas uses this in their propaganda, along with the body count.

But if this latest ceasefire effort holds, some Israeli and right wing pundits will think that this is what finally got Hamas to agree to a ceasefire, which is the opposite outcome from my view. So, the takeaway lesson for them is that hitting these kinds of targets will do what is necessary to stop the fighting.

I loved Camus’, ‘The Plague’. Metaphors aside, it was a keyhole into the kind of horror that is seeing loved ones die in such numbers that even the sensation of mourning is affected.

Thank you for that. We got through my mom’s funeral yesterday pretty well. It was cooler than usual, which helped once we got to the cemetery. My infamous brother Judas behaved more or less like a human being. I suspect someone took him aside and gave him the dire warning. I will never have to come face to face with him again. The other a-hole relatives were similarly well behaved. Decent people would take this for granted but this group has misbehaved before at funerals so precautions were in order.
I drove my Rolls-Royce rather than my usual Toyota and the obnoxious relatives seemed properly awestruck. Little do they know that I payed less than $13K for it three years ago. The reason for taking it was not to impress the goobers, though, it was because my mom really liked it and had asked me specifically to drive it to her funeral if I still had it when the time came.

Landsmark had already been knocked to the ground, losing his glasses and suffering a broken nose, by the time he got up with Kelly’s help and the famous picture was taken.[4]

The last time I was in Orlando FL, I drove past a used Mercedes dealer. I stopped to take a look because it seemed so odd that these cars had the prices painted on the windshields, but where I was used to seeing 750 or 1100, these prices were 48000 and 61000! I wondered how many people would drive up to a used car dealer and spend 40 or 50 k.

I had to take the RR to the dealer in Dallas to get the AC fixed a while back. I wandered into the showroom and checked out some new ones. I don’t especially like them. They have that heavy, squashed down, small window look so typical of luxury cars these days, as though the owners are trying to warn the peasants out of the way while simultaneously concealing their own identities. The inside is really over the top, resembling nothing so much as the waiting room of an upmarket house of ill repute. For their part, the window stickers generated enough shock to comfortably light such a house for a while. I can see an ultra rich hobbyist like Jay Leno dropping that for a car if it has significant historical value, but there is no way I would pay that for a new car. I could buy an airworthy MiG-21 for less, not that I would have any use for it. It might be fun to paint it up in Obama campaign colors and logos and jet around driving RW conspiracy dupes crazy though.
