The article also makes the point that this includes bills. When you don’t include bills (just credit cards and loans) the number drops to 5.3% on average.

However, since it’s based on credit sources that report, it’s not going to include things like payday lenders (or so it says).

Although. Seriously. The credit card is a bill. It is not free money, it is not a loan (or at least shouldn’t be treated as anything other than a short term immediate liquidity one).

Nope. I think Cracked had an article at some point on facts about debt and collections. We don’t have debtors’ prisons, so truthfully, the only thing they can do is wreck your credit history - and even then, you can eventually find someone to lend to you. They can’t force you to pay with any legal means.

Interestingly, if you pull up the actual report, they talk about the average amount of debt owed in collections and that is not concentrated in the South but instead fairly evenly distributed (possibly a little higher in the western states but the graphic is very different from the % with debts in collection).

Video of Hamas Raid Shows Why Israel Is So Freaked Out About Gaza Tunnels

To understand why these tunnels have become such a hot-button issue, one need look no further than a video released by Hamas by Tuesday, July 29. That video shows a group of fighters exiting such a tunnel and attacking an Israeli military installation. They appear to kill at least one Israeli soldier, though the combat footage is chaotic and not entirely clear. The fighters also make off with an X95 rifle, a sophisticated machine gun used by the Israel Defense Forces. […]

His “awards” are as follows: The Eric Breindel Collegiate Journalism Award. (Yes, he actually believes that gives him street creed. Really.)

The Eric Breindel Collegiate Journalism Award is presented to the undergraduate journalist, columnist, editorial writer or reporter who best reflects the spirit of Mr. Breindel’s writings: love of country and its democratic institutions as well as the commitment to preserve the freedoms that allow such institutions to flourish.

The award, which began in 2006, offers winners a cash prize of $10,000, as well as a paid internship of his or her choice at either Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal, or the New York Post. In addition, residential housing in New York City for non-New York residents will be provided for the winner for the duration of the internship position.

And a Robert L. Bartley Fellowship, and, well, that’s it.

re: #109 teleskiguy

Fucking unbelievable. The Senate voted Yay or Nay on eliminating the Federal Highway System? Ho. Lee. Shit.

From The Hill

The concept, commonly referred to by transportation observers as “devolution,” calls for lowering the gas tax that currently pays for most federal transportation projects from 18.4 cents per gallon to 3.7 cents in five years.

During the same time period, the bill would transfer authority over federal highways and transit programs to states and replace current congressional appropriations with block grants.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), who is the primary sponsor of the gas tax reduction proposal, said Tuesday that it would give states more control over transportation funding that they collect via their own fuel levies.

“Under this new system, Americans would no longer have to send significant gas-tax revenue to Washington, where politicians, bureaucrats, and lobbyists take their cut before sending it back with strings attached,” Lee said in a statement. “Instead, states and cities could plan, finance, and build smarter and more affordable projects.”

Lee has been pushing to eliminate the gas tax since 2013.

The vote comes as senators are scrambling to approve a new round of transportation funding before the Highway Trust Fund runs out of money next month.

Hell, since there will be only one company owning all the roads, eventually, the day will come where every vehicle has the equivalent of a taxi meter in it. It starts at a fixed amount every time you start it up and then charges you per mile and/or minute you travel.

If you try to avoid this the company has CCTV cameras at every intersection to track your movement anyway.

The government will be the bill collector as ripping off the company is stealing.

Then the rubes will wonder why they thought this was a good idea.

We already have an example of this here in Ontario.

Because pretty much anything CEOs do these days is aimed at shareholders, and shareholders don’t seem to care (anymore, if they ever did) about the long term health and sustainability of the company in the economy as a whole.

I am very, very familiar with the libertarian tech culture. Sadly. :(

I’ve got Jehad & Lara’s stream .

Seems quiet tonight so far compared to last night. It looked like something out of “Apocalypse Now” last night with flares floating down everywhere and explosions going off all over the place. :(

(I was watching the aljazeera stream) (currently off the air)

A lot of those people don’t even know what the word means. Which is really sad.

Nobody ever told them to STFU when they don’t know what they’re talking about.

yes, much more quiet tonight…last night was very intense. Jehad sounds exhausted. After being up all last night, he spent the day working on his generator and going out to take photos of the Al- Shojae’a neighborhood.

The children on both sides deserve the ability to grow up in peace, to have access to the opportunities to grow and thrive and move beyond this horrific conflict that has consumed their elders with no signs of stopping.

But I can’t believe either that the current environment is going to help them do that. And it breaks my heart, because my life here versus there is just an accident of birth.

Sometimes I really do need crap like this to remind me of just how good my life is/has been. Rough childhood? I didn’t have people shooting at me or blowing up my house with rockets.

No one there seemed to give it any mind. This group here in Texas just seem to have iron penis envy. What could possible go wrong.

Good night, Lizardim. Do not despair; all things come to an end. Even derp, even war, even the blood feud between Palestinians and Israelis. Just because we may not see it does not mean we may not or should not hope for it.

377 Gus  Jul 29, 2014 7:51:27pm

So, we have this.

CNS reported.

What Pelosi really said:

PELOSI: Well, we all — war is a deadly thing. And I have many Palestinians who live in my district and I am hearing them regularly about how their families are affected who live in the region. It’s a terrible thing. But let me just say that any missile that comes from someplace has a return address. And if Israel is responding to that address, then that’s a shame that the Palestinians are use — are rumored to be using children and families as shields for their missiles.

Should we all try to, first of all, avoid conflict, the Hamas initiated this. So again, this has to be something where we try to have the two-state solution, that we have to support — we have to support Abbas and his role as a leader there. We have to support Iron Dome to protect the Israelis from the missiles. We have to support the Palestinians and what they need. And we have to confer with the Qataris, who have told me over and over again that Hamas is a humanitarian organization, maybe they could use their influence to -

Oh hell. I completely forgot that yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. It was on that date, July 28th 1914, that Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The first shots were fired the same day. This followed a month of diplomatic back and forth over Serbian complicity in the assassination of Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28th.

A whole lot of 150 year anniversary Civil War stuff has been coming over the last few years, I’ve missed some milestones myself. One I do remember from last year was the 20th Maine taking Little Round Top at Gettysburg.

Next April is the 150 year anniversary of Appomattox Courthouse. That’s a pretty big one.

Pelosi Statement on House Resolution in Support of Israel’s Right to Self-Defense
Jul 11, 2014
Press Release

Contact: Drew Hammill

Washington, D.C. - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the House passed Congressmen Steve Israel and Tom Cole’s bipartisan H.Res. 657 by unanimous consent earlier today:

“With Israel’s citizens once again under assault, our bipartisan resolve to stand by Israel is firm and unwavering. I am pleased the House acted unanimously to reaffirm our support for Israel’s right to defend itself against unprovoked rocket attacks from Hamas.

“No family should be forced to endure constant threats to their lives or the persistent fear of rocket attacks. We call on Hamas to cease their attacks on Israel and stop endangering Palestinian civilians by using them as human shields.

“Congress will continue to monitor this situation closely. Our hearts go out to all the innocent civilians wounded and killed in these latest hostilities on both sides, and we continue to hope and pray for a swift and peaceful conclusion to the conflict.”
