Twitchy: “Jew-Hating Bitch Pelosi” Says Hamas is a Humanitarian Group (A Lie)

Wingnuts • Views: 44,805

Exhibit A

A screenshot:

CNS also reported as Pelosi: Qataris Have Told Me ‘Hamas Is a Humanitarian Organization’ which is more accurate.

What Rep. Nancy Pelosi really said with context:

PELOSI: Well, we all — war is a deadly thing. And I have many Palestinians who live in my district and I am hearing them regularly about how their families are affected who live in the region. It’s a terrible thing. But let me just say that any missile that comes from someplace has a return address. And if Israel is responding to that address, then that’s a shame that the Palestinians are use — are rumored to be using children and families as shields for their missiles.

Should we all try to, first of all, avoid conflict, the Hamas initiated this. So again, this has to be something where we try to have the two-state solution, that we have to support — we have to support Abbas and his role as a leader there. We have to support Iron Dome to protect the Israelis from the missiles. We have to support the Palestinians and what they need. And we have to confer with the Qataris, who have told me over and over again that Hamas is a humanitarian organization, maybe they could use their influence to…

(CROSSTALK)

CROWLEY: The U.S. [thinks they’re a terrorist] organization though, correct, do you?

PELOSI: Mmm-hmm.

CROWLEY: Yes.

PELOSI: We’ve had that discussion.

As you can see Nancy Pelosi did not say Hamas is a “humanitarian organization,” only that the Qataris see them as such. This is also the same perception of Hezbollah being seen as a “humanitarian organization” in many parts of the Middle East. There’s no getting around the reality of such perception whether we agree with them or not. When we negotiate treaties, cease fires, etc, we are given such conditions whether we agree with them or not. The same was true during the Cold War in our negotiations with the Soviets and other communist satellite states.

I happen to not think they are a humanitarian organization and in fact a terrorist group as listed by the State Department. That said, if we are to negotiate with Qatar we can’t get around their own perception regardless of how we think.

It is also important to note that Pelosi states that Hamas is responsible for this latest conflict and relates strong support for Israel.

Factcheck Conclusion

Pants on fire.

Nancy Pelosi on Israel - Wikipedia

Pelosi reaffirms that “America and Israel share an unbreakable bond: in peace and war; and in prosperity and in hardship”. Pelosi emphasized that “a strong relationship between the United States and Israel has long been supported by both Democrats and Republicans. America’s commitment to the safety and security of the State of Israel is unwavering,…[h]owever, the war in Iraq has made both America and Israel less safe.” Pelosi’s voting record shows consistent support for Israel. Prior to 2006 elections in the Palestinian Authority, she voted for a Congressional initiative disapproving of participation in the elections by Hamas and other organizations defined as terrorist by the legislation. She agrees with the current U.S. stance in support of land-for-peace. She has applauded Israeli “hopeful signs” of offering land, while criticizing Palestinian “threats” of not demonstrating peace in turn. She states, “If the Palestinians agree to coordinate with Israel on the evacuation, establish the rule of law, and demonstrate a capacity to govern, the world may be convinced that finally there is a real partner for peace”.

During the 2006 Lebanon War, Pelosi voted in favor of Resolution 921 on the count that “the seizure of Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah terrorists was an unprovoked attack and Israel has the right, and indeed the obligation, to respond”. She argues that organizations and political bodies in the Mideast like Hamas and Hezbollah “have a greater interest in maintaining a state of hostility with Israel than in improving the lives of the people they claim to represent”. Pelosi asserts that civilians on both sides of the border “have been put at risk by the aggression of Hamas and Hezbollah” in part for their use of “civilians as shields by concealing weapons in civilian areas”.

In September 2008, Pelosi hosted a reception in Washington with Israeli Knesset speaker Dalia Itzik, along with 20 members of Congress, where they toasted the “strong friendship” between Israel and the United States. During the ceremony, Pelosi held up the replica dog tags of the three Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah and Hamas in 2006 and stated that she keeps them as a “symbol of the sacrifices made, sacrifices far too great by the people of the state of Israel”.

Pelosi Statement on House Resolution in Support of Israel’s Right to Self-Defense
By: Nancy Pelosi
Date: July 11, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the House passed Congressmen Steve Israel and Tom Cole’s bipartisan H.Res. 657 by unanimous consent earlier today:

“With Israel’s citizens once again under assault, our bipartisan resolve to stand by Israel is firm and unwavering. I am pleased the House acted unanimously to reaffirm our support for Israel’s right to defend itself against unprovoked rocket attacks from Hamas.

“No family should be forced to endure constant threats to their lives or the persistent fear of rocket attacks. We call on Hamas to cease their attacks on Israel and stop endangering Palestinian civilians by using them as human shields.

“Congress will continue to monitor this situation closely. Our hearts go out to all the innocent civilians wounded and killed in these latest hostilities on both sides, and we continue to hope and pray for a swift and peaceful conclusion to the conflict.”

UPDATE at 7/29/14 9:36:03 pm by Gus

We now find Twitchy backtracking on their original smear of Nancy Pelosi:

Editors note: The original headline was intended to be a partial quote, partial paraphrase of a tweet from David Horowitz but it was clumsily written and misleading. It has been corrected.

Original Screenshot
Update Screenshot

You’ll note that it still maintains the original title of “‘Jew-hating bitch Pelosi’ says Hamas is a humanitarian group” from the first Twitter posting.

UPDATE at 7/30/14 9:33:41 am by Gus

And from Twitchy:

Note from the managing editors: The original title of this post did not make clear that it was quoting David Horowitz and we apologize. Twitchy does not endorse that kind of language in politics, and in fact, the site has a long record of condemning it on both sides of the aisle.

We regret that this post was published when a managing editor was not available to review and correct it, and again, we apologize.

In addition, the original headline misrepresented what Pelosi said. Here is the relevant portion of the CNN transcript:

PELOSI: Well, we all - war is a deadly thing. And I have many Palestinians who live in my district and I am hearing them regularly about how their families are affected who live in the region. It’s a terrible thing. But let me just say that any missile that comes from someplace has a return address. We have to support Iron Dome to protect the Israelis from the missiles. We have to support the Palestinians and what they need. And we have to confer with the Qataris, who have told me over and over again that Hamas is a humanitarian organization, maybe they could use their influence to -

(CROSSTALK)

CROWLEY: The U.S. (INAUDIBLE) organization though, correct, to you? [Twitchy’s transcript of this portion: “The U.S. thinks they’re a terrorist organization though, correct? Do you?”]

PELOSI: Mmm-hmm.

CROWLEY: Yes.

PELOSI: We’ve had that discussion.

They’re not the least bit concerned about truth or credibility - it really is just sheer malice at this point.

Conservatives have devolved into hateful, fearful people, with no interest in bridging any divide whatsoever. There are probably thousands of conservatives in the United States that honestly believe the only way to smooth out our political and social differences is through … ANOTHER CIVIL WAR.

I feel sorry for those kinds of people, not enough love in their lives.

7 Gus  Jul 29, 2014 8:53:30pm

Unreal. Especially if you read her statement on the “House Resolution in Support of Israel’s Right to Self-Defense.” Obviously it won’t meet the “kill them all” mentality of RWNJs but that’s clearly not the words of a person that “hates Jews.”

8 Charles Johnson  Jul 29, 2014 8:54:52pm

Also edited the headline - this should be front and center. Unbelievable.

Par for the course on the right these days.

The American right in 2014 has nothing to offer in terms of truth or credibility. They’re all about malice. It’s been that way for years, but it got turned up to eleventy in 2008.

but “who have told me over and over again” does a pretty good job of conveying a not dissimilar impression.

So according to @SooperDouche up there, the original headline was actually good because they were “just quoting” someone even though they gave no indication who they were quoting?

And the new headline is so much better? Is the story about the Pelosi interview, or is it about the fact that Horowitz tweeted some hateful and dishonest nonsense?

I’m sure they weren’t just looking for the flimsiest of reasons to inflame and incite by putting “Jew-hating Bitch Pelosi” in the headline.

108 A Mom Anon  Jul 30, 2014 5:04:47am

Normal, happy and well adjusted humans don’t do this crap. No need for it. Demonizing some “other” pulls apart communities, families and friendships. I worry about that more than I do most things. That’s the basis of any healthy and functional society, strong families and people forming strong communities. THAT is what will be our undoing, not some faceless “terrorist” or some imaginary threat hiding under the bed. They are scared of a caricature of the President and his family, of Liberals. It’s stuff they made up and the lies, each time they make the rounds, pick up more ridiculous bullshit. A garbage snowball.

I find it sad that no one loves any of these people enough to have intervened before the hatred caused brain rot.

Charles Johnson Vows To Take Legal Action Against A Mississippi Reporter

Conservative journalist Charles C. Johnson said Tuesday afternoon that he intends to sue a Mississippi reporter for defamation amid the ongoing fallout from the GOP runoff in the U.S. Senate race.

The audacious threat came after Sam R. Hall, a reporter for the Clarion-Ledger newspaper, published an article earlier in the day scrutinizing Johnson, who has offered a $100 bounty to his readers for any instances of plagiarism found on BuzzFeed.

Johnson offered the reward after the former BuzzFeed viral politics editor Benny Johnson was fired over allegations of serial plagiarism late last week.

Good morning Lizards. Remarkably mild morning outside for late July here in Philadelphia. Just hitting 70F right now and the humidity is tolerable.

Construction site across the street is starting to dig a little deeper. They have piles installed and timber shoring around about half the perimeter right now, and are working on the completing the circuit. Some more concrete foundation has turned up and been jack hammered to pieces. One corner turned up a brick foundation as well.

Looking at the dig face it looks like so far they’re mainly digging in compacted earth - with a thin layer of gravel and about 4-6” of asphalt at the top from the former parking lot. It’s probably not that far down to bedrock though I expect.

Aircraft violates Swedish airspace

A foreign flight violated Swedish airspace on July 18, according to a classified report from the Armed Forces, reports the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet and the radio channel P4 Kalmar.
The plane was a government aircraft, an airplane that is non-civilian. The plane came from the east, straight across Gotland before it veered off to the south. Somewhat later crossed the Swedish airspace outside Oland. Altogether found the aircraft was in Swedish airspace for around 15 min and 210 km into it.
The plane had requested permission to pass over Visby, via Jönköping and then swerve to the south, but was denied passage by the Swedish traffic control, yet ignored the denial.
— Aftonbladet: Kränkte svenskt luftrum över Gotland

My $.02 is that is another Russian Air Force Nuclear bombing training run, and an obvious provocation this soon after the release of the Swedish hostage from pro-russian rebels.
We had a similar airspace violation a year ago, this time the nuke training targets were in Stockholm County.

I think that’s about right. Of course, how does someone get Hamas to relinquish power in Gaza to anyone, let alone Fatah’s Abbas? Hamas isn’t about to give up power and control in Gaza, nor is it likely to lose elections there that are supposed to be held by the end of the year. We’d likely see a repeat of the last Palestinian elections, with Fatah holding on in the West Bank and Gaza held by Hamas despite the crushing toll Hamas rule has had on the region.

The fight hasn’t gained Gazans anything but an ever higher body count, misery, and the destruction of homes, buildings, schools, and infrastructure, but Hamas still thinks they can outlast Israel. Israeli policy hasn’t been able to dislodge Hamas, and intensifying attacks in Gaza has only worsened Israel’s position in world media. Peres seems to understand this, but still comes up against the billion dollar question of how to dislodge Hamas.

No one else has figured this out either.

/2014 Republican party

The resolution, written by Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.) and Pete King (R-N.Y.), congratulates Francis on his March 2013 election and recognizes “his inspirational statements and actions.”

The seemingly innocuous resolution was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which hasn’t acted on it. The panel didn’t comment for this article.

The inaction and the lack of a white smoke signal from Boehner have sparked speculation that politics is at play.

Only 19 of the 221 co-sponsors are Republicans. The dearth of GOP members on the measure could be attributable to assertions that the pope is “too liberal,” according to a Republican backer of the legislation.

The source noted that Francis last year denounced “trickle-down economics.”

Some Republicans believe the pope is “sounding like [President] Obama. [The pope] talks about equality — he actually used the term ‘trickle-down economics,’ which is politically charged,” the GOP official said.

A bill to deal with the immigration surge at the border appears headed for procedural defeat in the Senate as lawmakers trade blame over their inaction on the crisis.

Days ahead of Congress’ five-week summer recess, Senate Democrats’ $3.5 billion emergency spending bill designed to help deal with tens of thousands of young migrants crossing the border illegally has yet to draw the necessary support to move forward. A vote in the Senate was expected Wednesday.

The inclusion of hundreds of millions of dollars to fight Western wildfires and provide aid for Israel’s defense hasn’t been enough to win over Republicans, who demand legal changes rejected by Democrats to return the young migrants more quickly to Central America.

You know if Obama is this gun-grabber that they fantasize him to be. He would have done something in 2009. Strong majorities in both houses. Of course, you point that out, you get a response and something you can”t totally disprove and it’s WELL OBAMA WOULD DO IT IF HE WANTED TO AND OUR ARMS ARE THE ONLY THING THAT PREVENTED HIM FROM DOING IT. Now, common sense tells you that’s nonsense but you can’t disprove it. You of course can’t prove it either. Really enough of gun hoarding. Maybe if gun nuts cared more about people than guns, we wouldn’t have as much problems with health care or education in this country.

No doubt and that also shows you that the founders that they claim to venerate weren’t so fond of people taking up arms against the government every time something people didn’t like happened. Even people like Patrick Henry and Samuel Adams supported the response to the Whiskey Rebellion by Washington. They like to scream NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION but the fact of the matter is they do have representation. The colonists had no say in the taxes levied on them by the British parliament. These people did and do have a say but they just don’t like the people that are there and I sometimes don’t either but doesn’t mean the current federal government resembles imperial Britain.

James Garner on Reagan:

Ronald Reagan wasn’t qualified to be governor, let alone president. I was a vice president of the Screen Actors Guild when he was its president. My duties consisted of attending meetings and voting. The only thing I remember is that Ronnie never had an original thought and that we had to tell him what to say. That’s no way to run a union, let along a state or a country.

And he also said:

Garner writes that he was asked to run for Congress in 1962 as a Republican, and “it didn’t stop them when I told them I was a Democrat. …They just thought I could win.” In 1990, Democratic leaders approached him about running for governor of California, but the discussion got to the issue of abortion and Garner says he answered, “I don’t have an opinion, because that’s up to the woman. It has nothing to do with me.” The conversation pretty much stopped there.

Mr. Freedom Fries says what?

House GOPer Opposes Suing Obama Because He’d Rather Impeach Him

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) thinks suing President Obama is a waste of time — he would prefer to head straight to impeachment.

Jones told The Hill that House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) lawsuit against Obama over his use of executive actions is merely “theater” and “a show.”

“Why not impeach instead of wasting $1 million to $2 million of the taxpayers’ money?” Jones asked. “If you’re serious about this, use what the founders of the Constitution gave us.”

The congressman said he will vote against legislation authorizing the lawsuit, which will likely come to a vote on Thursday. The House Rules Committee voted to advance the legislation last week.

While Boehner has said that discussion of impeaching Obama is a “scam,” a few Republicans have expressed support for impeachment.

Jones told The Hill that general lack of enthusiasm for impeaching Obama in the House worries him.

“That’s why the Republican Party is in trouble,” he said.

First rule of impeachment club is you don’t talk about it? Heh. They’re talking about it. All the time. The Democrats are only responding to the ongoing talk and concern that if they lose more ground in November, that they will have a real situation on their hands.

How about a mandatory national ID for all citizens and another one for legal resident aliens?

I’d like a straight answer to this simple question. “What gun policies specifically has Obama proposed that you find tyrannical and what makes these policies unique from past proposals?” or better yet an actual answer on why the NRA keeps on going back and opposing stuff they once supported. How about a mandatory national ID for all citizens and another one for legal resident aliens?

It would not only end voter ID issues, it would also be a necessary prerequisite for employment, renting a house, opening a bank account, getting a driver’s license, registering a child for school, receiving emergency medical care.

Any takers out there (out there out there out there….?)

Isn’t voter qualification still a state-level issue?* I expect any serious push for a national ID under the current administration would face a huge upcry from the state’s rights and drooling “Obama tyranny” crowd.

It was only a rhetorical question. Needless to say, neither the Right nor the Left would embrace such an idea, although it would be a simple and effective solution to a lot of issues.

Belgium calls for clear labelling of goods from Israeli settlements

Belgium has advised retailers to label clearly the origin of products made in Israeli settlements that are in occupied Palestinian territories.

The non-binding recommendation has nothing to do with the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, the economics ministry said, noting that Britain and Denmark already had similar labelling guidelines in place.

“It’s a non-binding advice to state on labels that products originating from occupied territories come from there,” a spokeswoman said. “We don’t see this as a sanction against Israel, but EU rules stipulate that consumers have to be informed of the origins of products.”

Please stop conflating Gazans with Hamas. Yes, they made a bad mistake electing Hamas but that’s not surprising. Hamas looked to the majority like a good choice at the time. Just as the GOP looks like a good choice to some Americans, although not a majority.

Many of those people who voted for Hamas are undoubtedly regretting it now. But what are they going to do? Hamas won’t stand for a change of power and will do anything to keep that power.

The people in Gaza are not entirely congruent with Hamas. It isn’t just that all of Gaza suffer for what Hamas has done.

Louie Gohmert Claims Central American Youth Are Lying About Violence

During a conference call last week hosted by GOP politician E.W. Jackson, Rep. Louie Gohmert dismissed concerns that young migrants are fleeing Central America due to drug violence, claiming that the children aren’t telling the truth.

“Texas and the United States is [sic] being invaded and we’re in danger,” Gohmert said, before alleging that most of the unaccompanied minors are lying when they tell border patrol agents that they are escaping gang violence in Central America and have been coached to make such claims. Gohmert said minors end up telling officers that “we were told to say that we were fleeing gang violence.”

The congressmen went on to say that “the penetration of criminals and terrorists across our southern border” represents a threat to the U.S. comparable to the threat of a nuclear strike from Iran against Israel.
