Of course, Cruz has worked on all that stuff by blathering about it to the wingnuts and not actually doing any real work.

Maybe he can sponsor a bill to disband the Special Olympics. That’ll show those whiny babies.

Great work, Gus, as usual.

Let this be a lesson - always screenshot tweets like these, because when they’re exposed the weasels will try to hide them.

95% of my deleted tweets are for freaking typos, they end up as tweets anyway.

Someday Twitter will allow us to edit tweets. Someday. Right?

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

CBS 5 Investigates rolled hidden cameras during a membership drive for one of the country’s most secretive and controversial organizations. Lobbyists and state lawmakers mingled over steaks and drinks in a private room at the Valley’s exclusive Donovan’s Steakhouse.

The American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, put on the event. The organization advocates for limited government, federalism and free markets.

Can you imagine the reaction if Obama did that? It would be the “proof” they’ve wanted that Obama is a secret Hamas sympathizer. Really, Bibi and his government and his American wingnut friends are really not helping the situation at all. Bibi really screwed the pooch big time by making Avigdor Lieberman his foreign minister. It’s honestly the equivalent if our president had made someone like John Bolton SoS which I have no doubt would seriously have been considered had Romney won.

What this story tells me is that Cruz and his staff actively look at reasons to get upset at the Obama administration. Katy Perry concert at the WH. Oh I can’t be bothered to look at why that may be happening. I have to channel up the fake outrage because my boss is a pathetic little turd whose only real ideology is that he hates President Obama and wants to ride that all the way to the Republican nomination in 2016 and god forbid the White House himself. Maybe if Cruz actually had a real ideology, this kind of thing wouldn’t happen but nope he and his people have to just focus on anti-Obama hatred that they’re willing to spit on a concert for the Special Olympics and they don’t even have the decency to admit that they fucked up, they just delete the tweets and act like nothing happened.

Because Charles, conservatives will believe anything as long as it’s making a liberal or someone they despise look bad. It doesn’t have to be true or even close to true, it just has to smear a liberal. So Pelosi who is far from a Hamas apologist as you can find in Congress is smeared because David Horowitz hates her and the conservative morons on Twitter eat it up because they want to believe the worst about her. We saw it when that asshole Breitbart tried to make Shirley Sherrod look like a bigot. We saw it when that bastard O’Keefe made it look like ACORN was okay with prostitution. Even if one accepts your premises, your conclusion still doesn’t follow. Maybe they did nothing because they were a part of the chaos, money-hungry opportunists? Putin surely was such guy. Look up the corruption scandals in SPb when he was being accused by Marina Salye and others of basically stealing.

Your claim does not make sense because 1. the people who were making decisions back then are not the people who are in power now. Putin would have remained a nobody if not for Sobchak (a democrat), who supported the promising young guy despite his KGB past when he had nowhere else to go.

2. Because the people who are in power now were “determined”/”chosen” by many historical contingencies, not through any plan, much less a long range one. Everything could have been very different. Or even the same, but with entirely different personages.

3. Because the Russian history in the 1990s didn’t work acc. to any plan, nobody even suspected in 1990 what would happen in 1992, much less 10-20 years later. Nobody in his right mind could have had such a plan back then.

This claim might be good for a Chuck Norris joke, but it simply doesn’t work with the people and circumstances as they were in the 90s.

Nope. Rudolf Pikhoya has written some really valuable books, summarizing the period 1945-2005 (with the 2000-2005 part being very weak, but with a great summary of the fall of USSR and the causes leading to it). But I don’t think any of them have been translated.

171 Dr Lizardo  Aug 1, 2014 4:11:15am

Some good news; Uganda’s anti-homosexuality law - the most recent one - was struck down by the Constitutional Court there on a technicality. Apparently, the law was passed without a quorum.

Human rights activists say they expect politicians like the bill’s sponsor, MP David Bahati, to try to pass it again, but they think the chances he’ll succeed are slim. Re-passing the law would require starting the legislative process from the beginning, including committee hearings and receiving certification of its financial impact from the finance ministry. If the government of President Yoweri Museveni does not want the bill to pass again, the finance ministry could silently kill the bill simply by withholding certification.

“Someone will try,” said Nicholas Opiyo, one of the attorneys who argued against the law before the Constitutional Court. “I don’t think it will come back immediately. It will take some time. But the dynamics here change quite rapidly and it might not come back at all.”

The speed with which the court moved to reach a ruling had many speculating that it was acting on orders from Museveni to dispose of the legislation. The court wasn’t scheduled to take up the challenge to the law until September, but then abruptly announced last week that it would begin hearings this Wednesday. It began hearing arguments despite the objections of the representative of the attorney general, Patricia Mutesi, who may still appeal the order to proceed to the Supreme Court. But if political pressure had been put on the court to strike down the law, the same pressure could likely be used to get the attorney general’s office to quietly drop its efforts to uphold the law.

Reason why this doesn’t matter: Even if true, Hamas would know this would ratfuck the ceasefire. It was still an event that would nullify the ceasefire, and they knew it.

THe only other excuses are the metaphysical ones, basically that Hamas et al. are no longer rational actors after having been oppressed for so long.

CNN is running an under picture banner with the IDF saying that there was a suicide bomber attack less than a hour after the seize fire was supposed to have started. Though if there was a kidnapping of a soldier just before the seize fire that pretty much would kibosh it as well.

CNN is running an under picture banner with the IDF saying that there was a suicide bomber attack less than a hour after the seize fire was supposed to have started. Though if there was a kidnapping of a soldier just before the seize fire that pretty much would kibosh it as well.

Those are related events.

The Hamas timeline says this attack happened at 7, before the ceasefire. Which is possible, but still basically irrelevant because they’d know that it would fuck over the ceasefire. There are some events that, if you do them right before a ceasefire, are obviously going to bust it. If Israel had rocketed a bunch of Hamas officials right before the ceasefire, nobody would think Hamas should keep to the ceasefire. Likewise, Hamas kidnapping an Israeli soldier right before the ceasefire.

The Israeli timeline says the attack happened at 9:30. If that’s true, this was after the ceasefire.

But again, it really doesn’t matter: Taking actions right before a ceasefire of this magnitude shows no commitment to actual peace, just a kind of rules-lawyering that’s despicable.

Typical GG. Doesn’t want to recognize that if the West Bank and the Gaza Strip want to be treated like sovereign nations — they have to start acting like one. Or, and he’ll probably say, they are one that Israel fails to recognize, then they are open to getting invaded since they have been launching rockets and attacking an adjacent nation.

It’s still a mess. But you can’t start making those sorts of claims without applying the full set of intentional conventions to *both* sides.

re: #165 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Your claim does not make sense because 1. the people who were making decisions back then are not the people who are in power now. Putin would have remained a nobody if not for Sobchak (a democrat), who supported the promising young guy despite his KGB past when he had nowhere else to go.

People like Putin were not the ones in power back then, they were the low-level operatives in charge of implementing policy.

They saw their chance: when the leaders declared a putsch against Gorbachev, people like Putin said “Yes sir, we will obey orders!”.
The sclerotic, mummy-brained leaders, not used to anything else, assumed that their orders would be carried out without question.

But the lower-echelon people saw which way the wind was blowing and quietly let the upper-echelon leaders make fools of themselves.

The chaos that followed allowed the lower ranks to consolidate their power.

In 1992, I recall asking a colleague, a low-ranking member of the Communist Party, why he did not give up his party card, as his party was clearly consigned to the scrap-heap of history.

He gave me a steely-eyed stare worthy of Putin and simply said “Myi pobedim”. (We will triumph)

Now I know what he meant.

To me, the breakup of the Soviet Union and its attendant decay appears to have been exactly what you might expect from the collapse of a totalitarian (albeit one making attempts to liberalise) government. Without even the very appearance of a monolithic power structure and with the country now effectively split into bureaus vying for influence, wealth and outright power, the question of the ex-Soviets and the status of Russians living there must’ve taken a back seat. Perhaps the only conscious decision made to not contest the issues you raise is that the state lacked the power to project its designs. Plus the degradation of civil society might more be considered a sign of public exhaustion at living under a dysfunctional apparatus suddenly finding itself being led by officials who no longer had the same prestige and now lacked direction as well.
Maybe Russia now has some kind of leverage within its old sphere of influence due to the unresolved issues of the ’90s but they look rather incidental and Putin, I’d consider more of a product than an engineer.
My ignorance wins out here, I’m afraid but that’s my take.

He doesn’t care what the UN says. He doesn’t care what the media says.”

She concludes, “We are a country, we have borders, and Netanyahu enforces them. Why can’t we do that in America?”

Maybe because: 1) Mexico is a sovereign nation and bombing the border would be seen as an act of war, and 2) not everyone who comes here illegally is from Mexico?

Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or one of the other factions within Gaza? While the end result is the same it is worth considering that Hamas isn’t the only group in Gaza with armed fighters. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad has an agenda that includes pushing Hamas into confrontation with Israel as often as possible. I think that it’s also worth considering that Hamas’ leadership would be unlikely to negotiate a cease fire while simultaneously ordering actions that would immediately undo it. I am not in the least an apologist for Hamas. Hamas, like every other organization that has risen to govern the Palestinians, is largely reprehensible.

Both sides in the conflict are acting out the end of long series of very bad decisions stretching all the way back to the Ottoman Empire’s decision to ally itself with the Central Powers in WWI. That series of bad decisions has left neither side with sufficient will to enact a just and equable peace. I reserve my sympathy for those on both sides who are caught up in events beyond their control.

Also, it’s a distinction without a difference. If I was reading a WWII history book and it said that American forces kidnapped a German sergeant for interrogation I wouldn’t think it was weird or was implying it was an illegitimate military action. Nor if it said an American sniper set out to assassinate a German colonel. This sort of semantic bickering on Greenwald’s part ignores the obvious central truth: Hamas—or whatever group did this, which from Hamas’s statements looks like it was them—knew that this action would terminate the ceasefire.

It’s a “capture” if the soldier is to be held as a POW in accordance with Geneva Conventions, to be released at the end of hostilities.

I really don’t think the words are consistently used with that difference. Both capturing and kidnapping means you take the other person. Whether or not they’re treated as a POW after that is its own thing. But again, it’s a moot goddamn point on Greenwald’s part, a quibble, a distraction.

re: #271 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

If anything, I might think that ‘kidnap’ implied ‘by stealth’ whereas ‘capture’ might mean by main assault. But really, it’s a moot point. It was an action that they knew would terminate the ceasefire.

The bottom line is we’ll see a lot of people die over this soldier…mostly children.

So you think that Israel should, for example, no longer restrain itself and avoid civilian casaulties? That it shouldn’t restrain itself and not use torture? That Israel shouldn’t restrain itself and use indiscriminate bombing tactics?

Absolutely. Israel should restrain itself because restraint is the moral and ethical thing to do.

Torture? WTF?

After thousands of rockets aimed at civilians they should just take it. Israel is the problem, I get it. Thank you G Obdicutwald

They’re really not used with any consistency, it just so happens that the Israel-Palestine issue brings the etymologists and definition purists out of the woodwork. I understand that words are weapons in the war of ideas but to parse terms this finely is a way of changing focus and generating superfluous outrage.

Look, dude, words have meaning. If someone isn’t showing restraint, then they’re unrestrained. Abiding by, for example, the Geneva convention is ‘showing restraint’. If you say you don’t want Israel to show restraint, you’re saying anything goes, including torture. This is logic, and the English language, and shit like that.

Stop being a goddamn idiot and notice that everyone here is condemning Hamas for this, that I’m specifically doing that, and that all I’m saying by ‘restraint’ is that Israel should try to minimize civilian casualties and abide by the Geneva conventions.

If you think that Israel should minimize civilian casualties, then guess what: you think israel should show restraint.

Calm yourself down, take a deep breath, engage your logic center and stop being an asshole.

The situation remains the same as Lawhawk and I agreed on a few days ago: Both sides have to produce leaders that are capable of reaching compromise with each other and the political and temporal ability to enforce that compromise on their side.

Aside from things the two parties involved can do to make things more difficult, outside parties are doing a shitload to fuck this over, like the Arab states and Iran’s constant outpouring of antisemitic propaganda, the Dominionists support and encouragement for the Israeli far-right who want to see all Palestinian land taken by Israel, etc.

Washington Times: UN Condemns Israel, US for not sharing Iron Dome with Hamas

The United Nations slammed Israel for possibly committing war crimes in its fight against Hamas — and then backed that accusation by suggesting the Jewish nation ought to be sharing its Iron Dome defensive technology with the very terror group it’s fighting.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said to members of the media at an “emergency” meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council that Israel was falling short in its duty to protect citizens in the Gaza Strip from getting killed by its rockets.

“There is a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a manner that could amount to war crimes,” she said, Breitbart reported.

The Breitbart article is spreading on Israeli social media like wildfire … thing is I’m comparing between what they’re writing and what was originally written and covered by news websites (Ynet, Ha’aretz, etc), and there seems to be a notable difference…
Courtesy of Ha’aretz:
haaretz.com

Pillay said that she was appalled at Washington consistently voting against resolutions on Israel in the Human Rights Council, General Assembly and Security Council.

“They have not only provided the heavy weaponry which is now being used by Israel in Gaza but they’ve also provided almost $1 billion in providing the ‘Iron Domes’ to protect the Israels from rocket attacks,” she said. “But no such protection has been provided to Gazans against the shelling.”

Now, courtesy of BB:
breitbart.com

Among the UN’s long bill of particulars against the beleaguered Jewish state comes the almost unbelievable accusation that Israel’s refusal to share its Iron Dome ballistic missile defense shield with the “governing authority” of Gaza - i.e. Hamas, the terror group created to pursue the extermination of the Jewish state and now waging a terrorist war against it - constitutes a war crime against the civilians of Gaza.

Just because Hamas fires rockets indiscriminately aimed at Israeli civilian population centers without provocation and fires them from within its own population centers does not “absolve” Israel from its own legal violations, Pillay told reporters Thursday.

That last paragraph is one i can’t find a reference to anywhere.

Am I right in assessing that BB basically made crap up to make a bad thing look worse? Would really appreciate it if someone else could take a look and back me up on this (or prove me wrong)…

Stop the presses! A House GOP howler monkey had a lucid moment:

Top House Republican: GOP Can’t Sue Obama, Then Ask Him To Act On Border

A senior House Republican said Friday that his caucus couldn’t simultaneously sue President Barack Obama for perceived abuse of executive authority and expect him to act unilaterally to address the border crisis.

Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), a close ally of House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), was asked to reconcile the last-minute scrapping of border legislation with the House GOP’s lawsuit in an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“There was a contradiction yesterday that I’m still struggling to understand,” panelist Eugene Robinson said. “The leadership statement when the bill didn’t pass essentially said, ‘Well, but there are plenty of administrative things that President Obama can do and should be doing at the border.’ And that was a day after the house voted to sue President Obama for taking administrative action. So how does that square?”

Cole didn’t disagree.

Tune in later today when Tom Cole gets an earful from his base and declares that POTUS is a tyrant hellbent on unilaterally interpreting the law.

That’s actually good news. It is possible that the kidnapping was done by elements of Hamas cut off from command, or by unrelated elements. Even if that’s not the case, that they want to say that’s the case amounts to a repudiation of the event.

However, to re-engage the ceasefire they’ll have to produce the soldier.

Uh oh. Krauthammer is also having the same lucid moment as Tom Cole:

Charles Krauthammer is slamming the GOP for what he called a “ridiculous” contradiction after tabling legislation to tackle the border crisis within 24 hours after moving forward with a lawsuit against the president.

“It is ridiculous to sue the president on a Wednesday because he oversteps the law, as he has done a dozen times illegally and unconstitutionally, and then on a Thursday say that he should overstep the law, contradict the law that passed in 2008 and deal with this [the border] himself,” Krauthammer said Thursday on Fox News’ “Special Report.”

It won’t last. The GOP will find a way to make those Lego bricks fit if they have to pull out the Krazy Glue to do it.

Would you just sit inside and hope I went away and didn’t, by chance, hit anything important to you like your friends, family, sig other, etc? re: #340 Alyosha

Teukka! Now might be a good time to bust out one of your warnings of the clathrate deposits and how their release would be detrimental to our relatively comfortable existence. Your posts on the subject are some of the few which can actually frighten me and is salient given Alouette’s post at #323

Sure.
DISCLAIMER:
Author takes no responsibility for panic attacks and nightmares caused by reading this post.

Basically, clathrates are gasses (such as methane(CH4)) locked into ice. The clathrates’ ability to hold onto gas is very dependent on pressure and on … wait for it … temperature.
The most common gas locked in clathrates on this third rock from Sol is good ol’ CH4, wast deposits existing on the continental shelves as well as in the Arctic tundra (e.g. Siberia (yep, where the Yamal peninsula is)).
As global temperature rise, the clathrates ability to hold on to gas decreases, thus releasing methane into the atmosphere. Which is a problem, because as far as greenhouse gasses go, CH4 makes CO2 its bitch, because it is in round numbers 20 times as potent.
But if you thought all you would have to deal with was runaway global warming, think again. There are clathrate deposits on the continental shelves, which are not exempt from being released if things get a little warm and toasty.
And as fate will have it, the continental shelves have a lot of sediment, which, when stuff under it collapses as the clathrate pops, also will shift. Also, said sediment is not flat, it is mostly on an incline, meaning the shift will be great. Meaning there is a good chance of seeing a megatsunami up close and personal (see Storegga slide for an example).
But that is all of our problems, you say? Nope. Not by a long shot. Remember how I told you that clathrates were pressure as well as temperature sensitive? Simply put, one continental shelf clathrate deposit popping is likely to set off its neighbors closeby, be they under, above to the side of the popping deposit. Yep, you got it, cascading releases of CH4 clathrates.
And I will leave it to the reader to figure out what happens when you try to float a toy boat in a bubble pool set to maximum bubbles. And I also leave it as an exercise to figure out exactly how flammable CH4 is.

TL;DR When a climate scientist is says that “if even a fraction of the clathrate deposits on the continental shelves is released, we’re fucked”, he is making an understatement.

And just so no-one gets the idea I am making this up, and just how bad Ma Nature whipping her clathrate gun out can be:
Youtube Video

P.S.: Did I mention that a megatsunami originating on a continental shelf gives little to no warning time before it hits the coast?

Absolutely. This crap is not helpful

When Genocide is Permissible

Everyone agrees that Israel has the right to defend itself as well as the right to exercise that right. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has declared it, Obama and Kerry have clearly stated that no one could be expected to sit idle as thousands of rockets rain down on the heads of its citizens, placing them in clear and present danger. It seems then that the only point of contention is regarding the measure of punishment meted out in this situation.
I will conclude with a question for all the humanitarians out there. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clearly stated at the outset of this incursion that his objective is to restore a sustainable quiet for the citizens of Israel. We have already established that it is the responsibility of every government to ensure the safety and security of its people. If political leaders and military experts determine that the only way to achieve its goal of sustaining quiet is through genocide is it then permissible to achieve those responsible goals?

As House Republicans struggled Thursday to rally behind legislation to address the influx of illegal immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), a tea party favorite who has close ties to House conservatives, dismissed talk that he was partly responsible for the GOP’s stumble.

Defending his recent meetings with House Republicans, Cruz insisted that he was seeking fellowship with conservatives, rather than whipping against House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).

Yes, the image on instragram’s side should have the raw GPS coordinates in its EXIF data, but Facebook and other social media might assign a large area, including an area that might be in another country, to a certain town or village.

For example, I live in the northern part of my county here in Virginia, but my weather app on my Android phone will place me miles away in one of two other unincorporated communities in another county when I am at home.

If the coordinates are based off cell phone tower location, the margin of error is …not small. And I believe that Instagram will use the coarse location (AKA, based off cell towers) if the fine location (from GPS) is unavailable. It is tales like this that have turned hearts and minds in eastern Ukraine - where the Russian-speaking majority once welcomed a separatist uprising and Moscow’s backing for it - increasingly against Russia. In towns like Slaviansk, rebels have left behind a population disillusioned and angry. They’re still suspicious of the Ukrainian government forces they believed would kill them, but also disappointed by how a once-trusted Russia tried to manipulate their fears.

Why can’t people reTweet this constantly as THIS IS WHAT A TYPICAL JEW THINKS.

[Embedded content]

For the same reason they don’t retweet the kind, thoughtful things the millions of Muslims out there in the Twitterverse say. Twitter isn’t a good gauge of “what a typical _____________ thinks” anyway, at least IMO. From last year:

Twitter Reaction to Events Often at Odds with Overall Public Opinion

The reaction on Twitter to major political events and policy decisions often differs a great deal from public opinion as measured by surveys. This is the conclusion of a year-long Pew Research Center study that compared the results of national polls to the tone of tweets in response to eight major news events, including the outcome of the presidential election, the first presidential debate and major speeches by Barack Obama.

At times the Twitter conversation is more liberal than survey responses, while at other times it is more conservative. Often it is the overall negativity that stands out. Much of the difference may have to do with both the narrow sliver of the public represented on Twitter as well as who among that slice chose to take part in any one conversation. […]

pewresearch.org

Also, Twitter is a pretty small piece of the pie. As of earlier this month there are close to 650 million active Twitter users, while the world population is around 7.2 billion. That means opinions on Twitter represent those of less than 10% of people around the globe.

The world needs more peaceful, rational voices and fewer shit-stirring trolls, shrieky ideologues, demagogues, and fanatics (religious or otherwise).

No. It depends much on the web policy as much as how much arm twisting can the Web Team resist.

And it’s not that stupid: most higher ups give no damns to what’s best for everyone and only think what looks better for them, or their office.

Off the international topics — anyone have suggestions for places to visit or things to see in Tennessee?

Chattanooga

The Aquarium,,,, the Chattanooga Choo Choo,,, and there’s a “mountain” there that the name escapes me at the moment

Chattanooga is a neat city in the shadow of Lookout Mountain. So it would get my vote.

There’s also Nashville and Memphis - depending on your cultural and music taste; they’re also places to go in Tennessee with things to see.

But note that it’s 350 miles from Chattanooga to Memphis, with Nashville kinda in the middle.

re: #320 Pie-onist Overlord

We drove through Tennessee last year on the way to Alabama. Did not have time to stop at any of the attractions, but there is a lot of stuff you can do:

1. Jack Daniels distillery
2. Memphis (Graceland)
3. Nashville (Music City)
4. Civil War battlefields

Jack Daniels distillery is in a dry county - so if you visit - you won’t be able to sample it’s wares.

My route has me coming into the state from the northeast and zig-zagging through all three in order to take in various Civil War battlefields in addition to the three cities. Will be spending roughly a week in the state.

re: #325 Feline Fearless Leader

I already have six battlefields on the itinerary list (New Market, Chickamaugua, Stone’s River, Franklin, Fort Donelson, Shiloh). And at least a full day for both Nashville and Memphis. So I’m more looking at this point for the less obvious options, or maybe something particular in Nashville/Memphis/Chattanooga that shouldn’t be missed given the opportunity.

Franklin is a neat little city. Downtown is a good place to take a break, walk around and do a meal stop. There’s free parking at the courthouse parking garage. The garage even has electric charging stations.

Nashville has Ft. Negley Park, overlooking downtown Nashville.
nashville.gov But I’ve never been there. Next to Ft Negley is the Nashville Sounds Ball Parks. Good stadium, good baseball.

Not much on Civil War battlefields, so someone on LGF better versed could advise you better.

Good overview of Nashville music - Country & Western Music Museum (well done if you’re into country music). Should be able to find parking at Nashville’s new convention center, which is next door and occupies two city blocks.

Classical music in Nashville, Schermerhorn Symphony Center adjacent to C&W Music Museum

The mother church of C&W music, the Ryman concerts usually sell out quickly, so that’s usually not a option without purchasing a ticket well in advance.

My basic suggestion for Nashville is to take the $30 Studio B bus tour, C&W Music Museum, or start at 5th Ave N and Broadway (Ryman is on 5th), and walk downhill to 2rd Ave N, up to Church St, then down to the river and back on 1st Ave to Broadway. Plenty of places of all food and music flavors along this route.

If you’re inclined (pun intended Nashville is a hilly city), there is a Citibike stand at Broadway and 1st.
