GOP on Thursday: WHY WON’T OBUMMER LEAD ON IMMIGRATION AND DO SOMETHING?

Obama today:

“House Republicans, as we speak, are trying to pass the most extreme and unworkable version of a bill that they already know is going nowhere, that can’t pass the Senate,” Obama said in a hastily-announced afternoon appearance in the White House press briefing room.

“They’re not even trying to to solve the problem,” the president complained. “This is a message bill….just so they can check a box before leaving town tomorrow.”
Obama said that if Congress doesn’t pass additional funding to deal with the influx of child migrants and families from Central America, he’ll have to act on his own to try to address the situation.

wiki

As John Yoo points out, the term “hostis humani generis” and the peculiar status of the “enemies of mankind” that it conveys continues to be relevant up until the present day. However, the only actual extension of “hostis humani generis” blessed by courts of law has been its extension to torturers. This has been done by decisions of U.S. and international courts; specifically, in a case tried in the United States in 1980, Filártiga v. Peña-Irala, 630 F.2d 876, the United States 2nd Circuit Court ruled that it could exercise jurisdiction over agents of the Government of Paraguay (in their individual capacity[8]) who were found to have committed the crime of torture against a Paraguayan citizen, using its jurisdiction under the Offenses Clause[9] of the Constitution of the United States, the Alien Tort Claims Act, and customary international law. In deciding this, the court famously stated that “Indeed, for purposes of civil liability, the torturer has become like the pirate and slave trader before him hostis humani generis, an enemy of all mankind.” This usage of the term hostis humani generis has been reinforced by the ruling of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the conviction of a torturer in Prosecutor v. Furundžija,[10][11] marking its acceptance as a peremptory norm, part of the customary international law, held as jus cogens, applying erga omnes, upon any and every state and human individual without exception or reservation whatsoever.

CNN sucks so bad these days so…
Credible view of the conflict or not?

This time, Gaza fighting is ‘proxy war’ for entire Mideast

This is unprecedented in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict,” says CNN’s Ali Younes, an analyst who has covered the region for decades. “Most Arab states are actively supporting Israel against the Palestinians — and not even shy about it or doing it discreetly.”
It’s a “joint Arab-Israeli war consisting of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia against other Arabs — the Palestinians as represented by Hamas.”

As the New York Times put it, “Arab leaders, viewing Hamas as worse than Israel, stay silent.”

Most Arab states are actively supporting Israel.

One of the outcomes of the fighting will likely be “the end of the old Arab alliance system that has, even nominally, supported the Palestinians and their goal of establishing a Palestinian state,” Younes says.

Surprising news from the Eric Garner case in NYC…

The medical examiner has ruled that the chokehold by a police officer on a Staten Island man last month caused his death.

Eric Garner’s July 17 death has been ruled a homicide, Medical examiner spokeswoman Julie Bolcer said Friday.

His death was caused by the “compression of his neck (chokehold), compression of his chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police” and asthma, heart disease and obesity were contributing factors, Bolcer said.

re: #116 Aunty Entity Dragon

Not a single officer will be discipined. NY taxpayers will pay a seven figure sum for his death. Police spokesmen will claim that NYPD officers played it “by the book” and would do it exactly the same tomorrow.

Until brutality and wrongful death judgements come out of police budgets, Not. One. Fucking. Thing. Will. Change.

No, until we reform things like prosecutors being political positions, and until we change the culture of the US as it stands to ‘criminals’, things won’t change. Police departments and their conditions are the symptoms, not the cause, of the problems.
