ZOMG, Hamas Hangs Young Kids on Fence to use as Human Shields!

Or, people will believe ANY damned thing

Filed Under: People Will Believe ANY Damned Thing

So I was going through my emails & Google Alerts, surfing around the web, checking out the trends in the Twitterverse, etc. and I came across this:

Confirmation Bias?

Now I don’t even remember where I originally saw it, but as far as I can tell the current outrage was started by fraudulent ex-terrorist & terrorism expert turned Christian, Walid Shoebat, who posted it yesterday on his blog (screenshot). It was also on many of the hater blogs, most linking back to Shoebat.

Automatically assuming that anything originating with Shoebat or any of the other so-called “counterjihadists” is most likely an intentional misrepresentation designed to pander to people’s fears and trigger thier confirmation bias, I decided to go poking around to see what I could find out about it.

At first I was a bit miffed, but the more I read the descriptions of it on the hater blogs and wingnutty, fear mongering tweets like these, the more absurd it became until it began to seem downright comical. Granted the little boys look terrified and I feel sorry for them, but the breathless claims that this was definitive PROOF of a Hamas member (some even claimed it was the boys’ father) hanging kids up as human shields on the side of a building was just too freaking bizarre and I had to LOL.

Really? I mean, seriously—you actually believe that they’re literally going around attaching kid-shields to the sides of buildings by hanging them off window gratings like Christmas stockings pinned to a fireplace mantle? Not only that, but that some Hamas guy is actually letting someone take pictures of it?? And why isn’t the IDF taking photos of it to push back against all the bad PR they’ve been getting?

The stupid, it burns.

All you can tell for sure from the photo is that the kids are clearly in distress. There’s Arabic graffiti on the wall, but that doesn’t prove squat—they could be in any number of countries. Also, how do we know the guy isn’t taking them down, not putting them up? Look at his left arm and the left foot of the kid whose collar he’s holding—it looks like he’s holding the kid around his legs and trying to lift him up so he can take him down. But hey, if you think all Arabs/Muslims are heartless, violent savages, then nothing is too much of a stretch, I guess. *SMH*

How did the kids get up there in the first place? Who in the hell knows? I sure don’t and I’m fairly certain Shoebat doesn’t have a clue either, but anyone who’s ever had kids knows they can get themselves is some crazy, (seemingly) impossible predicaments. If it was what he’s claiming it is (and what so many are repeating like a battalion of inane wind-up dolls), then why isn’t it in major newspapers? Why is there no date, time, and exact location? Why isn’t the photographer taking credit? Yeah, I know, I know: Because [insert wingnut conspiracy theory of your choice].

Anyway, last but not least I searched for the image on Google Images to see how far back I could find references to it. Most of the results were from Facebook, so there’s no telling where it originated. I gave up at the 2001 reference to “The Rapture Is Imminent!” (Bad crazy, don’t go there,)

Google Images Results

People snark about “Pallywood”, but they rarely mention the amount of photographic misrepresentation that also flows in the opposite direction.

UPDATE at 8/2/14 6:33:55 pm by CuriousLurker

H/T to Gus and his Google-fu for finding a copy of the photo that dates back to December 2013, pretty much proving that it has nothing to do with the current conflict in Gaza. Thanks, Gus!

UPDATE at 8/5/14 10:28:52 am by CuriousLurker

H/T to Sergey for finding a copy of the photo posted to Facebook in June 2011. I now consider the claims that the photo is related to current events in Gaza to be definitively debunked. Thanks, Sergey!

Indeed. *sigh* But I have to admit that now I’m super curious about what really happened… How in the hell did they end up hanging there like that? They could’ve been strangled to death SO quickly. As the mother of a son who managed to survive to adulthood, all I can say is: Yikes! O_o

Ha! That was exactly what I was thinking—either older kids bullying them, or a bunch of kids playing some game that didn’t go as expected.

5 Flavia  Aug 2, 2014 5:00:37pm

The reason it looks like he is hanging them up instead of taking them down is that there’s no logical way they could have fallen onto THAT part of the fence.

Yeah, I searched for the provenance of this photo, too. I couldn’t find it.

My first thought the second I saw the pic, well before I saw the context was that an adult was saving a couple of little kids from the pranks of older kids.

No, but someone else (like older kids) could’ve put them up there. We also can’t see the ground so there’s no way to know if they might have climbed up on something that toppled over. I’m sure there are other possibilities I haven’t thought of as well, but believing that the guy is a member of Hamas hanging them up on a building as shields strikes me as batshit crazy, especially when the guy who’s pushing the photo is a known fraud. It’s absurd.

Do let me know if you find that provenance from a reliable source. I’m sure the IDF would be relieved to have indisputable photographic proof of the use of children as shields.

One possibility. Pissed off parent. Maybe they were running in the road one too many times.

It probably was an innocuous event, that of course (because the Muslims) got spread far & wide.

Seriously, whatever the actuality - it’s being used to defame.

Parents and kids can be assholes and frequently are, no matter the culture.

This is why it’s so dangerous and irresponsible to jump to conclusions about photographs. It’s a tiny moment of time, with no context. You don’t know what happened before or after this slice of time.

But we should always be skeptical of those who use these fleeting images to promote their agendas.

Yeah, it really is impossible to tell what’s going on, especially since we can’t see the ground or the rest of the scene to know if there are more people around and see what their expressions & body language might say.

re: #87 Charles Johnson

Another possibility: he could be taking the kids down after they were hung up there by bullies.

Yeah, it’s hard to tell, but his (the man’s) posture doesn’t strike me as aggressive, and the kids have more of an “Oh crap, what have we gotten ourselves into?!” look than a “You’re a scary guy that means us harm, HELP!” look. And kids that young? If they were really terrified (of the man) I’d expect that they’d have wet their pants or something.

This is why it’s so dangerous and irresponsible to jump to conclusions about photographs. It’s a tiny moment of time, with no context. You don’t know what happened before or after this slice of time.

But we should always be skeptical of those who use these fleeting images to promote their agendas.

Yes, THIS! It’s really important because when you lie they can point to it and say, “See? We were innocent of it that time so….” If the deception happens often enough, people will start to doubt all images & stories coming out of there.

FWIW. From the Atheist Conservative.

Note: We were wrongly informed about this picture.

It is from an earlier time, and no one is sure whether the man is hanging the kids up or taking them down.

We apologize for our error. The deplorable thing is that it was all too easy to believe a Gazan father capable of doing such a thing.

Not a solitary clue other than that the graffiti is arabic, the people who made up this slander obviously did not have a clue either, they just made it up upon seeing the picture.

Could be from any number of middle eastern or Persian/Asian countries that use the Persian alphabet.

Yeah, FB wasn’t created until circa 2004, so it was impossible for it to have been there in 2001. As I mentioned in my response #24 to another poster, I tried to find out where Google pulls the dates from, to no avail.

I would never have accepted the image as legit anyway simply because of the most recent source (Shoebat) and the fact that it was impossible to very when & where it was taken and what the context was.

You’re correct that I did get a bit fed up with the uselessness of trying to track it down, but Gus saved the day with his discovery of it posted in that Arabic forum back in December of last year.

So, Guardians of the Galaxy was a lot of fun.

I’m certainly not going to spoil the movie, but I have no such qualms about the post-credits scene, which is a Giant Sized Man-Thing shout-out to slightly (*cough*) over-the-hill, long-in-the-tooth, long time Marvel Comics fanboy geeks like yours truly.

At the end of the credits, the final scene shows Benecio Del Toro’s Taneleer Tivan — a.k.a. “The Collector” — soothing his nerves after his entire “collection” has pretty much been blown to smitheroonies. Cosmo the Dog licks his face, and an offscreen voice says “Why do you let him lick you like that?”

Cut to the speaker, and it’s Howard The Duck.

But here’s the fun part: If you’re familiar with Marvel’s mythology, the scene really isn’t just a random joke. The Collector’s raison d’etre is to collect rare/unusual/one-of-a-kind objects, and Howard the Duck — an anthropomorphic duck from an alternate dimension — is the only talking duck in the Marvel Universe.

It’s a cool thing when the writers know the source material.

Excellent. I tried translating it in Chrome and it mostly seems to be people cracking jokes about it. It’s hard to tell sometimes because the auto-translators aren’t particularly accurate and you often end up with a word salad. It doesn’t help that there are lots of regional dialects and much of the Arabic you see in social media situations is colloquial.

Heh, I remember talking to some of the taxi drivers back in the day and them having a discussion about how in the Gulf region the word maqwa means “iron” (as in the thing you use to press your clothes), but in Egypt it’s slang for “ass” (or vice versa—it was a long time ago).

Hmm, according to Chrome the caption says:

Hi, my image has been used by the group in the social networking sites as a component of a Hamas children hang on the walls of houses so as not to bombard …. and went site nor Hebrew …

I can’t make sense out of the comments that follow

I guess it could be him. It’s hard to tell from the header photo on his main profile page (or “wall” or whatever it’s called nowadays) because the kids are much younger there and they’re smiling, and we can’t see the guy’s face in the other photo. That said, his build, coloring, haircut, and protruding ears seem to match—impossible to be sure though.

In any event, the thread is what it is. People were engaging in some much-need stress relief by posting photos of animals (and other kids) stuck on fences and other odd places, not being callous about animal suffering. I would think that would be obvious even to the casual observer, especially considering that many of the posters are also loving pet owners.

No matter what it is, or where it is from, all I know is that if I came upon kids strangling on a fence, especially if I am a big strong guy, the first thing I would do would be to lift them both so they are no longer strangling. The boy on the left, that adult is done with him, he is now involved in hanging up the second boy. Anyone w a brain knows to lift someone who is strangling so although you are trying to be nice and loving, this is an image of an arab man hanging kids on a fence. I don’t care about the where or why of this image, but this IS an excellent depiction of the Muslim mindset. You can try to spin it differently, but your eyes really do see what he is doing.

Did you intend that reply for me? Forgive me if I’m missing something obvious, but I don’t see what he has to to with the tweet I posted…?

158 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator  Aug 5, 2014 8:28:30am
In July 2014, during the 2014 Gaza Conflict, Feiglin outlined steps toward “achieving quiet in Gaza.” His plan included attacking all of Gaza, its infrastructure and military sites, without regard to civilian ‘human shields’. After conquering and annexing Gaza into Israel, that portion of Gaza’s “enemy population that is innocent of wrong-doing and separated itself from the armed terrorists will be treated in accordance with international law and will be allowed to leave.” After becoming part of Israel, Gaza would be repopulated by Jews.[34]
On August 4th, 2014, the Daily Mail newspaper alleged that Feiglin had called for concentration camps in Gaza, ‘the conquest of the entire Gaza Strip, and annihilation of all fighting forces and their supporters’ and also for shipping the people living in Gaza across the world. [35]

About 20% of Israel’s citizens are Israeli Arabs. Feiglin was asked about Israel’s status as a “Jewish and democratic state” in a 2004 interview and stated: “Why should non-Jews have a say in the policy of a Jewish state?… For two thousand years, Jews dreamed of a Jewish state, not a democratic state. Democracy should serve the values of the state, not destroy them….”[47]

In a 2003 posting on the Manhigut Yehudit website (Hebrew version) setting forth a 20-point political program of his most important policy changes, Feiglin proposed replacing the Knesset with a bicameral legislature, whose upper house, which would control all “national affairs”, would be “composed exclusively of Jews.”

In his 2005 book “War of Dreams”, Feiglin wrote that his program was: “Israeli citizenship to Jews only [and] the immediate expulsion of any person of another people who claims any sort of sovereignty in the Land of Israel.”[50]

You can find places where we say the same things. You can also find places where we are different. I was in the army when Meir, Hashem yikom damo [may God avenge his blood], was [most] active, so I didn’t get to know him so well. But I can definitely say that the slogan “Kahane tzadak – Kahane was right” has proven itself many times.[57]

Well what have we here:

(if you go to the link, it’s to a facebook page with the very same photo being discussed in this thread. No wonder she’s all miffed about annoying facts and nuance getting in the way of her preferred narrative)

Why do you Obummer-loving, America-hating libtards always have to screw up the narrative with your stupid facts??

Feiglin is banned from entering the United Kingdom due to a decision by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, made public in March 2008, excluding Feiglin on the grounds that his presence in the country “would not be conducive to the public good.”[77]

re: #162 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Feiglin wrote an article in 2009 entitled “I Am A Proud Homophobe.”[92] In 2012, he wrote several posts on his Facebook page detailing his views on gays. “The gay pride parade isn’t about rights. It’s about forcing the values of the minority onto the majority, effectively locking the majority into the proverbial closet. Homosexual “rights” undermine the normative family, the foundation of our nation.”[93]

Yet he is a libertarian.

Libertarian in name only.

Moshe Feiglin’s page.

Nice. There’s even an asshole in his comments with a Kahanist logo as his avatar saying that since the kids are weapons one needn’t feel bad about “neutralizing” them. And that’s just in the first 50 of 347 comments.

Disgusting

The Internet has given voice to a lot of people with some very nasty repressed thoughts.
And they claim progressives are the emotional ones.

re: #160 Charles Johnson

You were very, very wise to run away screaming from the right-wingers when you did. It’s a pity that some of the people who were here during the process didn’t learn from your experience and are still choosing to support the worst of the so-called “fringe”.
