Steve King to Obama: Please Don’t Make Me Impeach You Over Immigration

Careening toward a constitutional crisis

Yes, folks, the Republican Party is threatening the President again over immigration; this time it’s far right Rep. Steve King on Fox News Sunday, saying “none of us want to do it” (yeah, right) but if Obama forces them into it they’ll have no other choice but to start impeachment proceedings.

Are we actually going to witness the spectacle of a gang of old white men trying to remove the first black President from office — over immigration? It’s looking more and more like they’re actually going to go for it. I’m only surprised it took them this long.

“None of us want to do the thing that’s left for us as an alternative,” King explained. “But if the president has decided that he’s simple not going to enforce any immigration law or at least not against anybody except the felons — which essentially he has done already, this is a broader group of people — I think Congress has to sit down and have a serious look at the rest of this Constitution, and that includes that i-word that we don’t want to say.” The Iowa Republican added: “And I only say that now because I want to encourage the president, ‘Please don’t put America into a constitutional crisis. Please don’t do that. There’s too much at stake in this country to be decided that you can take over the Constitution and write it at will.’”

“You’re saying that if he were to do that, impeachment would be on the table?” Wallace pressed.

“I think then we have to sit down and take a look at that,” King insisted. “If that’s not enough to bring that about then I don’t know what would be. We’ve never seen anything in this country like a president who says I’m going make up all the immigration law that I choose.”

All the more reason for the President go through with it. Either the GOTP will actually go through with impeachment proceedings and pretty much nuke their chances at winning the Senate, or they’ll back off their threats and their base will have their heads.

Heads I win, tails you lose.

So what is this “I word” that they don’t want to say? It can’t be impeachment because they are saying that over and over and over.

I would ask Rep. King what, exactly, in the President’s immigration policy constitutes a “high crime or misdemeanor” that is the threshold for impeachment. And if he so much as THINKS the word “treason” I will open an epic can of whup-ass on the lot of them.

11 Lidane  Aug 3, 2014 12:30:32pm

I find it interesting that prior to 1992, only one president had ever been impeached. Now BOTH Democrats elected POTUS in the last 22 years are the subject of impeachment blather.

And yet the last Republican who held office, and who arguably committed ACTUAL crimes in office, got off scott free. Hmm.

No way they move until after the midterm elections, if they win control of the Senate in November then they are absolutely going to go for it.

As we saw with Bill Clinton, Republicans are perfectly capable of coming up with a legal justification for impeachment, even if they have to invent it.

The “lying to a grand jury” over a freaking blowjob justification for impeaching Clinton was the flimsiest of flimsy excuses, but it was all they needed.

What we’ve got here is… failure to communicate. Some men you just can’t reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it… well, he gets it. I don’t like it any more than you men.

Didn’t Boehner just say that Obama need to take action via an EO? Which is it?

Oh, and Rep. King, you do know that in housing/processing unaccompanied minors, Obama is trying to enforce the immigration laws on the books. Idiots.

Pretty much. They’d spent six years whining about AMERICA HELD HOSTAGE (El Rushbo’s tagline during the Clinton years) and spent millions on a special prosecutor to find something — anything — to impeach Clinton for.

The irony is that as soon as he got impeached, Clinton’s poll numbers went UP, not down. Hell, Bubba could have run in 2012 and won 300 electoral votes against Mittens without breaking a sweat.

19 b_sharp  Aug 3, 2014 12:37:38pm

Am I weird in demanding more specificity from the complaints against Obama?
I’ve asked which portions of the constitution Obama has ignored but all I get is some generic hemming and hawing or an imaginary threat to people’s rights. I guess Obama is about to take away rights and that’s enough to impeach.

It was complete weaksauce. I remember watching the spectacle of Clinton’s impeachment in amazement. The best the GOP could come up with was that he lied about a blowjob and that it was somehow worth removing him from office.

They have even less to go on with Obama, but they’re determined to impeach him anyway. It’s insane.

They have to fund the government before the midterms. That’s going to be enough of a circus.

I hope they DO impeach him. I want every single GOP primary candidate next year to be forced to go on record about it. That should give Reince some agita.

Well, that’s nothing new. Andrew Johnson was impeached for “violating” an act of Congress that was later ruled unconstitutional by the SCOTUS. The only time in the country’s history when impeachment was actually pursued for real crimes was Nixon, and he resigned before they could even be voted on by the full House.

Think what’s more glaring is not the people who have been impeached and over what, but those who haven’t. As Charlie Pierce has noted time and again, the only reason the press didn’t descend on Reagan with the ferocity they did Nixon was the belief amongst many journalists that they didn’t want to be responsible for another “failed presidency.”

What it really boils down to is they’re angry. They’re angry that, rather than being cowed into submission by the idle threats, the President has instead thrown them back at those issuing them and helped his party raise money off them. So now they’re trying to go for the “mushy middle” by whining that the President’s lying about their intentions.

It’s like something out of a fucking movie, the villain who’s been so busy trying to sabotage the hero is now whining to the authorities that he’s the victim because his plans have backfired.

There is no question that the gop has been calling for impeachment, except among wilfully blind partisans. Just another gop attempt at revisionist history.
