Glenn Greenwald Retweets “If Obama Were Consistent He’d Bomb Israel,” Then Deletes It

Hiding evidence of raging bias
Weird • Views: 32,496

If you’ve followed Glenn Greenwald’s work at all (and you aren’t one of the acolytes who rush to excuse anything he says or does), you’re probably aware that his criticism of the United States is relentless, at times bordering on pathological, and today at the Intercept he’s published another one of his trademark “everything the US does is wrong” pieces: U.S. “Humanitarian” Bombing of Iraq: A Redundant Presidential Ritual - the Intercept.

The purpose of his screed is to attack the Obama administration’s limited airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq. These airstrikes are intended to degrade ISIS’s ability to attack American advisers, and also give cover for humanitarian airdrops for the Yazidi people, who are under quite explicit threat of genocide from the Islamist militants.

Greenwald, however, alleges that the Obama administration has hidden motivations for this military action, and that it simply cannot be for humanitarian purposes because the US “does not oppose tyranny and violent oppression in the Middle East.”

So what would Greenwald suggest instead of airstrikes against ISIS and humanitarian support for the Yazidi people? Well… nothing. He makes absolutely no constructive suggestions to deal with this serious problem. As far as I can tell, his solution to the threat of genocide against the Yazidi is to simply let it happen, because the US is unreservedly evil and driven by unspecified conspiratorial motives.

But as unhinged and unhelpful as Greenwald’s criticism of the United States may be, there’s one other nation on Earth that arouses even more ire in him: Israel.

And he inadvertently provided an excellent example of this raging antipathy today, when, right after denouncing America’s limited bombing plans, he retweeted this twisted comment (hat tip to Tommy Christopher for pointing it out):

A screenshot, in case it goes missing:

That’s right; the guy who says bombing and military action cannot possibly solve anything and should always be condemned, retweeted a comment that Obama should bomb… Israel. A jaw-dropper, indeed.

And interestingly, Greenwald then immediately used the “Undo Retweet” function to delete his retweet, within minutes. Did he realize he was uncovering something ugly about himself by echoing this comment, and delete it to hide it? We can only speculate, but the fact is he did try to hide it.

Tommy Christopher was the one who actually noticed that Greenwald’s retweet had disappeared, but by digging into the replies for that comment about bombing Israel I discovered proof that Greenwald had indeed retweeted it.

First, people replied to Greenwald’s retweet, which caused his handle to be included in the reply along with the original tweeter’s handle. For example:

And shortly after that, someone else tried to retweet Greenwald’s RT of the original, and got an error — because it had been deleted at that point.

It’s a very revealing moment in Greenwald’s non-stop crusades against the United States and Israel. His bias utterly blinded him to the implications of what he was doing — and when he did realize those implications, he tried to conceal that he’d echoed this awful comment.

Glenn’s an attention whore. Twitter just happens to be his outlet of choice. If he couldn’t get the attention he seeks there, he’d quickly find something new, like the comment section of a blog or a BBS.

If Texas ignores the rules and refuses to write a plan to implement them, the EPA would have to step in and write a plan for the state.

Texas also ignored a 2010 federal rule requiring new industrial plants to obtain greenhouse gas permits. The EPA took over, leading to years-long delays for permits, which caused industrial interests to blame the state for its decision.

The state has not won any of its lawsuits against the EPA rules, though they have cost taxpayers about $350,000, the Tribune said.

re: #7 Charles Johnson

And bothering to point out that what Israel is doing doesn’t meet any established definition of genocide wouldn’t help either. They’re pathological in hate of Israel (anti-Semitism optional).

People throw the term genocide around with reckless abandon - often directed at Israel, even though Israel is not systematically murdering a specific race, ethnicity, or creed. You may hate that they have occupied territory claimed by the Palestinians (lands previously held by Jordan and Egypt in fact from 1948-1967). You might hate the harsh policies put in place that limit Palestinian movement in and out of Palestinian-controlled areas, or that the Israelis have claimed lands and built security barriers.

But that doesn’t equate with genocide. No way. No how.

You do find some Israelis calling for the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank/Gaza, but those Israelis are pushing policies that got Kahanists banned from Israeli politics and labeled terrorists by the Israeli government.

The Israelis are no more guilty of genocide than Hamas is of wanting the Israelis to commit genocide. No one wants that. 1800 fatalities is awful, but it also shows some restraint in a population of 1.8 million embedded by Israel’s self-avowed enemy.

I do admit that I had a big wince reading the story in the NYT about the IDF using 155s as counter-battery fire in the immediate area of a UN designated haven/school. A 155 mm howitzer has a CEP (radius of error) of well over 50 meters. It is in no way a precision weapon. So when three of the shells came down on the school, there should have been no surprise on the Israeli side. That was a pretty major fuck up. Not smart.

Militarily, you are wasting shells. Politically, you are feeding your enemies red meat.

Genocide. They keep using that term. It doesn’t mean what they think it means.

It’s become a catchall and go-to phrase for anti-Israel sentiment that explodes across the net when violence ratchets up between Israel and Hamas.

Used properly, genocide can and does describe events ongoing in the current day. The ISIS attacks against Yezidi and Kurds - threats of conversion or death (and mostly death, ethnic cleansing, and other assorted atrocities) are a textbook definition of genocide.

That’s it. Other recent genocides include the Rwandan genocide. The Darfur genocide.

Libertarians think being consistent is more important that being in touch with reality. They think their philosophy is the most consistent, and therefore the best. It’s easier to achieve consistence when that bothersome ‘reality’ is not a factor. And valuing consistence so highly lets them undervalue humans and other inconsistent things, like reality.

Another example of recent genocide:

Since 1996, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC; Congo) has been embroiled in violence that has killed as many as 5.4 million people. The conflict has been the world’s bloodiest since World War II. The First and Second Congo Wars, which sparked the violence, involved multiple foreign armies and investors from Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Chad, Libya and Sudan, among others, and has been so devastating that it is sometimes called the “African World War.”

There’s a Genocide Convention that most countries are signatories to, and even then, there’s little impetus for anyone to step in and stop genocides in progress. Didn’t happen with Congo, Rwanda, Darfur, etc. And it doesn’t address democide, which is politically motivated systematic murder, ethnic cleansing, and elimination of a group - which can describe Assad (father and son) in Syria, or Saddam’s acts against the Marsh Arabs in Iraq.

It’s why the UN and other diplomats are so circumspect in defining actions as genocide in diplomatic circles, because it would mean the Convention kicks in and the UN would have to act.

And here’s the Convention’s definition of genocide:

genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

re: #88 Charles Johnson

Man. There is so much cognitive dissonance going on about Israel and Hamas. It’s a black hole of human awfulness.

Charles, it’s one of those situations where *everyone’s* ox is being gored, to some degree. Hamas has gotten the Israelis to make some stupid decisions in the fog of war. Hamas’ decisions have been stupid from the get-go.

There have been a grand total of two civilians killed on the Israeli side of the wire by over three thousand rockets fired from Gaza, plus one from a mortar round. Picture after picture comes out of Gaza of dead and maimed children. It’s a no-win fight for the IDF, but they have to fight. It just sucks for everyone.

Situation Normal, All Fucked Up.

To be fair, Charles, Israel vs. Palestine has been bereft of sanity since the state of Israel was formed. The Internet, however, has made it so much easier for people to feed their confirmation bias into a veritable giant.

One kitten eats much slower than the other two, so we take her and her plate into the other room so she has a shot of getting her full serving.

She Who Must Be Obeyed is rehearsing tonight up in Georgetown, at Southwestern University, with a modern dance troupe (Sophianetta) for a piece by by Robert Patterson (Garden of the Goddesses). Nine short tone poems in various ethnic music styles (for the various Goddesses) using flute, harp, and percussion. The musicians will be included in the dance blocking. Neat concept, with performances already scheduled in Georgetown, Austin, and Houston starting in January.

So I’m baching it tonight. It’s still oppressively hot outside. Odd that one of the things about climate change is that it just doesn’t cool down at night as much as it used to. Humidity increases before temperatures drop and holds the heat in. We just might hit a low of 78 tomorrow morning before spanking up to 102 tomorrow PM. It’s still 92 out there right now, and it’s almost 10 pm here. Ick.

For the next 2 days they will sit at the entryway of whatever room I’m in and just “MEROOORRRORRR” (‘meizer cats) at me. When I get up, talk at them, or in any way try to interact, they will walk off. About Sunday evening they will be in the mood for snuggles and head noogies.

Sigh. Payday. Most of the bills are paid and I have $35 to see me through the next 2 weeks. Isn’t working full time so you can run to stand still fun? Ah well. At least I got to see an old High School friend with her family (16 year old girl & 12 year old boy) tonight for dinner. Last time I saw her the girl was at 8 months in utero so it’s been a wee while

And now it’s about time to head out the door for another 8 hours at the desk. Take care lizards.

I live in a bedroom community a half hour away from the ski resorts, so it’s not as expensive as actually living in Vail proper (or Avon, the town below Beaver Creek). It’s still expensive nonetheless. Fortunately both of my employers pay me a living wage, so there’s that.

Thus an invasion under the auspices of the UN, and a quick defense o Kuwait and a withdrawal with UN sanctions agreed to, or a targeted bombing by Clinton, and the monstrous and incompetent invasion by Bush Jr., are all synonymous with Obama’s withdrawal and conscious, limited bombing to protect people about to be slaughtered — all this is the same, because America, yuck. re: #48 lawhawk

Late to the party, of course, due to those pesky time zones, but I’m going to stick my oar in here.

It’s true that only the fringe of Israeli society is calling for genocide or ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population. However, the political wing of that fringe generally holds the balance of power in the government. If the right-wing parties bolt, the government falls.

However the second, there is tremendous weariness amongst the non-fringe public. Every couple of years we find ourselves right back in the same situation, bombing the shit out of Gaza to stop rocket fire, killing civilians and taking international condemnation for it, and in general getting nothing more than a temporary respite. Granted the ultimate cause for that is the spectacular ineptitude and mendacity of the last 20 years of Israeli governments - but a lot of people, even nominal leftists, at this point would be so happy to see the problem go away they wouldn’t scruple the details too much.

And however the third - while what we’re doing may not constitute genocide (or it may, I’m not up on the nuances of the definition in international law) - it certainly constitutes war crimes: targeting civilian areas and collective punishment, in unambiguous effect even if not necessarily by intention. One can argue that these war crimes are unavoidable, given Hamas’ strategy (and necessity - where the else are they going to fight from?) of mounting attacks from populated areas. But unavoidable or otherwise, Israel is committing war crimes, in gross violation of our obligations under international law as an occupying power.

I’m willing to entertain the argument that there’s no way to defend ourselves in these circumstances without committing war crimes, but it gets on my last fucking nerve when my compatriots deny it’s happening, that without those evil outside agitators Hamas terrorists, our darkies Palestinians would be perfectly happy living the way they do.

re: #229 BadExampleMan

On one hand one could say - “Why does terminology matter, people are dying while you’re arguing about words!”. But terminology matters and different used terms also imply different consequences (legal or otherwise). Usually one deals a bit differently with “mere” war crimes than with genocide (although some massive war crimes, while they don’t fall under the strict definition of genocide, may reach the status of a genocidal massacre (though it’s not an official term) - e.g. the Katyn massacre).

Also, this is simply stupid and counter-productive to what the critics want to achieve, because it is exactly those who accuse Israel of “genocide” who invite the debate about words. E.g. Israel’s operation in Jenin was called “Jenin genocide” by certain figures, yet it couldn’t be genocide in principle due to the low numbers involved, and this accusation basically shifted the focus to the debate about words rather than about the particular war crimes (as detailed by HRW among others), which are always appalling on their own, even if they’re relatively few.

So now the DailyKos crowd and various such folks accuse Israel of genocide, even though Israel obviously lacked genocidal intent and thus the accusation won’t withstand basic scrutiny and those who made the claim will simply be discredited.

PS: This also reminds me of the shrieking mobs of Russian national-patriots who are accusing Ukraine of a “genocide” of Russians. I don’t have much doubt that the Ukrainian troops have committed some war crimes - even if sometimes unwittingly - due to the complex nature of urban warfare and lack of experience. But again, any claims of “genocide” in this case are specious propaganda.

The tactics of the Islamic State (ISIS) haven’t evolved to deal with a foe that has overwhelming air supremacy; look at the way they travel - in single-line vehicle formation, sometimes in parallel columns. This has been seen several times.

Their tactics and fighting strategy may well work against an infantry force, but they make themselves sitting ducks against an opponent that has an actual, heavily armed and technologically sophisticated air force. ISIS simply isn’t used to dealing with air power, and it is an enormous vulnerability on their part - one we can use to our advantage.

Putin’s import restrictions are such an incredible, incomprehensible own goal. If he’d wanted to actually hurt the West he would have targeted machinery, machine components and vehicles. Those are a much larger component of Russian imports from US and the EU, and they represent manufacturing categories that can probably immediately be replaced to a substantial degree by sourcing from China. Whereas not only is China itself a net food importer, but their quality and safety record severely undermines the reputation of what food products they do export.

A year or two of heavy machinery shortages would also be less likely to cause massive hardship to the average person, but a food supply shortage and price spike at the supermarket is guaranteed to piss everyone off. The thing is though, Putin seems like such a stubborn man that there’s good odds he’ll stick with this cluster fuck rather than to admit error and reverse himself.

Good Morning, Lizards. This will be long-ish, because what else is there to do at 8:00 on a Saturday?

It’s a brilliant morning here on the Island. I just came back in from letting Scout run the back yard, where he wallowed in dust and chewed sticks and did the things that puppies enjoy doing. He got the stitches from his neutering taken out yesterday, so I’m thinking he feels kind of liberated this morning, and he woke me just before 6 to let me know. Clown.

My wife is in Montreal this weekend at the ‘Heavy Montreal’ festival. I was originally supposed to go and photograph Twisted, but a gig in a lovely little theater on the North Shore came up, and the money was too good to turn down. She and a friend drove up yesterday, and she reports they were pulled aside at the border due to a combination of a brand-new passport (wife), a swarthy (Hispanic) travelling companion (a friend who volunteered to go to the festival in my stead), and a couple of New Yorkers crossing the border in Vermont. They did, however, arrive safely last evening. I miss her.

A fresh pot of coffee is on, and I plan to spend the morning tweaking amplifier settings and practicing acoustic guitar parts for tonight’s show on the nifty Martin acoustic I picked up a couple of weeks ago. There are worse ways to spend a morning.

A new meme that I’ve been meaning to post - Driftglass has started a meme called ‘Ran Paul’ to honor ol’ Messyhead’s bailing from the convo with the DREAMers this week, and they’re pretty funny. Examples here, here, here and here.

Okay. Coffee and practice. I hope everyone’s morning is as fine as the one we’ve got going here.

IDIOT OF THE DAY

Freshman Rep. Curt Clawson (R-Florida) came to his first day on the House Foreign Affairs Committee trying to lay down the law using his impressive experience of being the boss-guy everyone had to listen to in his private-sector job. He didn’t realize he was speaking to senior U.S. officials from the State Department and Commerce Department even though they were introduced as such by one of the chairmen. Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar were exceedingly gracious about the whole thing, I must say!

Logical, but again, this is a philosophical issue, and these can be looked at from various angles.

It’s just interesting to explore various hypotheticals, as philosophers (as well as jurists) are wont to do. For instance: whether the owner of a theoretical plant that was emitting carcinogenic pollutants some time ago, thus causing n provable cancer deaths m years later, is guilty of homicide in the same a) legal, b) philosophical sense (provided he knew he was going above the norm). (I would argue yes, but I don’t know whether the law agrees.) Or whether a president starting an unnecessary war under false pretenses, the murderous results of which were easily predictable, is guilty of mass homicide.

So I’m steeling myself and what little reserve I might have for a visit to the hospital today to see my friend who is dying. He’s still in a semi coma, they’re easing him out of that to move the vent into his trachea so he can be awake and talk to people. He doesn’t know the doctors have only given him a week to live yet. He knew back in April he was at stage 3, he doesn’t know he’s gone to stage 4 because he’s been in a medically induced coma for over a week now. I’m not sure how in the hell I’m going to walk in there and quietly talk to him and not completely lose my shit. The cancer has now spread to his entire chest cavity, his lymph nodes and they found a couple of small tumors in his brain. They never could treat his cancer because he was full of blood clots in his arms lungs, arms, legs and neck. 47 yrs old. Same age as The Husband. Fuck.

I swear, the next fool I hear whining about spending tax dollars on such foolish things as “fruit fly research” or anything related is getting a throat punch from me. Maybe I should just carry a big old science textbook around to smack idiots with. It seems appropriate at this point.

Later lizards, keep a good thought, lots of people are just heartbroken over this, I can think of no less that 50 people who are just devastated about this mess.

You are in my prayers and I have a similar thing to do today. I was called yesterday by my step mother to see my dad. She told me his is on oxygen and may be critical. I will walk over to the nursing home which is two miles from my house. Everyone of her friends says it is a couple of blocks and I should be there every day. They seem to forget that I walk a lot at my job and I need to rest at night and on the weekends. Plus I have to deal with my kid sister who is a total dictator. She wants to manage my life. Her idea of helping me is for me to turn over all of my money and possessions to her and she will meter it out to me as she sees fit. To her $.05 is more than enough for groceries. I prefer my accountant’s suggestion of $100 a week. And to top that off my dad wants me to “get along” with my kid sister.

Putin’s import restrictions are such an incredible, incomprehensible own goal….

My guess is that making things harder on the average person isn’t a bug, it’s a feature. It looks like a lot of people will buy that it’s the West’s fault (although certainly not all), and Putin doesn’t have any use for a middle class anyways. You need to buy off the rich and impoverish the rest so they’re too busy trying not to starve to make trouble. It’s the unhappy middle class that usually starts shit.

I believe it’s far more likely that Putin is at risk from a coup from his buddies than any sort of popular uprising, but he seems to have an irrational horror of more color revolutions.

I don’t know where this idea stems from. Everybody knows that Putin introduced these sanctions (as a countermeasure to the sanctions against banks and oligarchs). What people might say - at least at first - is that the measures are necessary to answer the West’s sanctions. It’s not the same as saying that it’s the West’s fault. It still presupposes Putin’s responsibility. And acc. to the most reasonable scenario once people feel that Putin’s sanctions affect them directly, they may as well turn against him - or continue to think - “OK, I suffer, but there’s no other way”. They will still know that it’s Putin’s decision. Now, one should never underestimate the stupidity of the masses, so it is possible that people will blame the West for these sanctions too, but I don’t understand those who think that it is either inevitable or most probable.

What people might say - at least at first - is that the measures are necessary to answer the West’s sanctions. It’s not the same as saying that it’s the West’s fault.

It is if you believe the entire situation was set in motion by the nefarious West, and poor beleaguered Russia is protecting herself and her own from the godless fascists who are butchering people left and right. I’ve got Russian family who get this stuff from Perviy Kanal every day and believe it.

I don’t think it will work over the long term either, since the rush from foreign adventurism wears off pretty quick and the economic pain lasts a long time. Plus, if you’re not Orthodox ethnic Russian, the writing’s on the wall. Up till now, the deal has been that Russians get to get rich as long as they keep their noses out of politics, and now Putin’s broken that deal.

My read is that there’s popular dissatisfaction but nowhere near enough to be a threat to Putin. My prediction is that if Putin loses power, it will be via a coup by other oligarchs that are getting squeezed, and if he’s shot, it will be by a Russian ultranationalist who thinks Putin’s sold out.

I disagree. What I wrote already presupposes this anti-Western attitude. A person can blame the West (for nebulous “everything”) and Putin (for these concrete sanctions) at the same time. When it comes to their bellies, “average folk” can suddenly begin thinking semi-rationally.

Up till now, the deal has been that Russians get to get rich as long as they keep their noses out of politics, and now Putin’s broken that deal.

This, however, is spot-on. And this is what I’m basically talking about. The Crimea euphoria will soon pass. Then we’ll see.

Thereby giving the show tons of free publicity even before the first episode had aired. You would think that they would figure out that getting the movie/TV show/book they are against onto the news and into the papers before its release was detrimental to their stated cause.

Texas could start allowing alcohol sales at gun shows provided they don’t allow live ammunition or let buyers take possession of their weapons at the events.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission announced the proposal Friday. It will hold a 30-day public comment period before any change is made.

The proposal also would require that firearms being shown for sale be disabled and not readily convertible for use.

No tritium. Just novak like plain sights right now. Down the road if I have the money to spare, then perhaps.

The slide release is a copy of the one used by the Norwegian M1914 licensed copy of the Colt sold by SARCO. Here’s a picture of the Kongsberg pistol:

Much more ergonomic than the traditional though it requires fairly serious moding of the grips. It’s like the slide release on a number of CZ75 clones like the Jericho.

Well, I mean, they cast a Barack Obama doppelganger as Satan. How much clearer do they have to spell it out? BLACK PEOPLE ARE EBIL.

Morning Lizardim.

To be fair, the creators of the show released the following statements about that controversy:

This is utter nonsense. The actor who played Satan, Mehdi Ouazanni, is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several Biblical epics - including Satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our President.

and:

Both Mark and I have nothing but respect and love for our president, who is a fellow Christian. False statements such as these are just designed as a foolish distraction to try and discredit the beauty of the story of The Bible.

They might be religious, and the RWNJs out there might have latched onto their program, but I don’t think that the creators necessary share the same views at the RWNJs.

We (Me & local LEO) do use the same range - the local free range (400 meters which is great when I bring the .30-06 Remington 700 along ;) ) But talking to some of them if I get a chance is not a bad reminder.

As for drills, I’ve been working through “Tactical Pistol Shooting” 2nd edition by Erik Lawrence and Mike Pannone which feels right based on my out-of-date army time. That said, I’d grab any serious drills you can share.

The third article is a Heritage screed, i.e. biased.
It also contains numerous claims in need of investigation. Many of those claims seem to be of the “I had a pro-P8 sign and something bad happened to me” variety. But correlation does not prove causation. The report relies on sources such as christianexaminer.com , which themselves lack citations.
Moreover, even if some of the actions indeed happened for the reasons alleged, while unfortunate, one should ask how they prove any sort of fascism, for the same sort of actions could be expected against people agitating against interracial marriages too. Would that be “interracial fascism” or something? No, it would only prove that it’s a hot issue, and this stuff happens when such issues are publicly debated.

1. Such a statement doesn’t by itself ‘abdicate responsibility for evil’, since humans are still responsible for the things they do when they fall prey to Satan’s temptations, and God holds them accountable for those actions.

2. Satan represents absolute evil, a malice against life and all that is good. the more malice a person carries with him or her, the closer they are to the Devil.

So I set out to research writing a page the other day based on some articles where white nationalists were praising Kim Jong Il and the DPRK (North Korea). I ended up getting sidetracked by the ridiculously widespread inferiority complex many white supremacists/white nationalists have towards people of Asian descent.

Perhaps it is a product of many of them growing up in a time when “Japan Inc.” seemed destined to buy up America wholesale?

Asians are openly acknowledged to be smarter, faster learners, better performing in school, etc, etc… They are also greatly admired for the homogenous nature of their culture and “racial solidarity.”

The only thing white people are acknowledged to be better at than Asians is “thinking outside of the box” which supposedly allows them to be better at inventing things. The belief seems to be that Asians can only copy and improve upon whatever the white man has invented first.

It is just such a startling contrast to these peoples opinions about all other races/peoples that it came as a bit of a shock. If anything I guess I learned that Kim and North Korea garnering some of these peoples admiration really isn’t all that far out of character for them.

Yeah, people pay lip service to “never again”, yet genocide seems to keep occurring on a fairly regular basis without much notable outrage from the “civilized” first world.

This time had better be different. In Africa, the excuse can be made that air power is ineffective over jungle and that boots on the ground is impossible because there’s just no way to keep non-African armies healthy in the teeth of the local diseases, so boots on the ground, even spotters, is also impossible. And the distances involved are too great, etc. etc. And anyhow, what happens in Rwanda is inherently a contained situation and isn’t going to affect world markets.

None of those excuses, good, bad, or ugly, applies this time.

If you haven’t seen the film The Wind Rises (風立ちぬ), it’s an anime by Hayao Miyazaki, and a fictionalized bio of Jiro Horikoshi. It’s quite good; a bittersweet film, but nonetheless extraordinary. Film critic David Ehrilch wrote, “While initially jarring, Miyazaki’s unapologetic deviations from fact help ‘The Wind Rises’ to transcend the linearity of its expected structure, the film eventually revealing itself to be less of a biopic than it is a devastatingly honest lament for the corruption of beauty, and how invariably pathetic the human response to that loss must be” and that sums it up quite nicely.

Despite how I respect others beliefs, I can’t argue from any position other than my own beliefs. If you want to clarify your beliefs within one of my arguments, that’s fine but I will return the favour by clarifying my thoughts in response.

My arguments may sound anti-theist at times, but recognize that I view theists as a range of beliefs, from rational deist to careful IDist to OEC to raving creationist YECs. My comments are generally aimed toward the YECs because they are the ones most in the news and with the looniest ideas. They include people who can affect policy both in the US & Canada with affects the entire world.

I respect the beliefs of the rest even though I disagree with those belief systems and will speak of my own belief (disbelief) system. I have no desire to insult you, D_F, CL, or my wife. That won’t dissuade me from expressing my own opinions.

I once watched a hawk and a raven spiral up into the sky together, one right above the other, until they disappeared. A cross-species experience.

A raven is too big for a hawk to engage with so I guess a race to the sun is the best they can do.

I’ve noticed that the number of crows drops along with song birds when the merlins start teaching their young how to hunt.

And I’ve seen plenty of ravens raiding smaller birds’ nests to feed their own hatchlings. What goes around comes around. Nature red in beak and claw.

I was sitting on the can, er, contemplating one day sort of semi-watching the robin babies in the tree just outside the bathroom window. I heard the robins starting to panic and looked up to see a crow picking up a baby and flying away. The crow came back a couple of minutes later to get the other one. I threw the roll of toilet paper at the window to scare the crow but it came back a second later. I was actually upset that the crows got both babies.

In the 15 years we lived in that house only one set of babies made it to adulthood in that tree.

Looks like the dhikr at the Sufi Center Rabbaniyyah in Berlin should be pretty good tonight. It gets started officially in about a half hour or so. They’re warming up, but here’s a livestream.

I always enjoy watching it when a couple of starlings start giving a hawk a hard time. It’s like watching a WW2 film where the fighters are coming in against the bombers. They just keep swooping and harassing the hawk, and he can’t do much since they stay in tight to him

I’m not sure how common it is but we occasionally see ravens in with the crows during migration south in the fall.

I should add, these guys would be target numero uno for the ISIS wackaloons; ISIS regards Sufis as takfir, or apostates.

Because you know, we sing and chant and have drums and all that. Heaven forbid.

The small birds, especially the insectivores, are so much faster and agile than the hawks I’ve seen them peck the hawk’s head in flight. Pretty funny actually.

ISIS seems to have no scruples about murdering anyone who isn’t them. My Facebook has been positively blowing up about their vicious repression of Iraqi Christians.

You may have been thinking of me. I was in Columbus last week, but most of my of time was spent studying and putting out some fires. It was a good trip however.

Oops. You are right. Apologies to both you and Rightwingconspirator.

Sounds like you were busy. I think you said you were here teaching. Cool.

We had some Kingbirds nesting within site of the kitchen window this spring. I know there were at least three chicks at first, but only two made it to fledged out flyers. I think the other fell, but I’m not sure. The ravens harassed the nest but it was before there were eggs, I think.

Hmm, the Renew America site seems a little confused…

Is Facebook blocking RenewAmerica’s impeachment drive?

Hear what conservative leaders are saying about impeachment

Congressman: ‘We do have what’s called impeachment’

In the end, it will be impeachment or the ruin of America

Followed by:

Impeachment debacle underscores debasement of the Constitution

CHRIS ADAMO — In the past several weeks, the pervasive buzz around Washington has been about supposed Republican plans to impeach Barack Obama. Oddly, such talk comes almost entirely from the Democrats. Once again, Beltway Republicans are reverting to their standard role of playing exclusively on defense, in hopes that this attack will somehow blow over with minimal damage to them…

wrenchwench,

Thanks for the info yesterday evening regarding that video I had posted of the disgruntled Chicago African Americans put together by Rebel Pundit/Jeremy Segal. I did some more searching based on what you had found and he is definitely a Breitbart disciple. Dude has been in many dust-ups with his camera.

Very true. ISIS’ primary goal seems to be a “purification” of the areas under its control - that means anyone who doesn’t subscribe to their strict Salafist interpretation of Islam might as kiss their patootie goodbye.

The opinion of the Sufis I know is that the Salafi’s are agents of the devil. Wahhabis, too.

Even in Canada these companies only do the minimum to protect the environment so accident like this are too common. Money matters, wildlife not so much. Even when you link the wildlife to economics they don’t give a shit.

We always try. Should failure mean that we stop trying?

We did NOT try in Rwanda.

We did NOT try in Uganda.

And my point was and is that whatever the reasons for punting may have been, they don’t begin to work as excuses for the situation we now face.
