Here Is Your “Big Romney Comeback” Story of The Week

Please proceed, Governor.
Politics • Views: 26,092

I first became aware of the “bring back Mitt” movement among establishment-type Republicans last month when Politico gave the world The Case for Mitt Romney in 2016. This was authored by definite partisan (a former Romney staffer and fellow private equity guy), but appeared in a not especially partisan outlet. This seems to be becoming a pattern.

Last week, The Washington Post published As Democrats avoid Obama, Romney is in demand on the midterm campaign trail. This is obviously not a place where one expects a GOP slant, but this story was written by former National Review Online scribe Robert Costa.

Now today we have the UK’s Telegraph (a conservative bent, but among the largest non-tabloid papers in the country) with Could Mitt Romney ride to the rescue of the Republican Party?. This week’s partisan author is Matt Lewis of The Daily Caller. The story includes a Pat Buchanan quote, complete with a thoughtful plug for his new Nixon book.

Of course, the next one of these stories to reconcile itself with the fact Romney was busy last summer making sure everyone understood he never really wanted to be president in the first place will be the first.

I’ve been saying it for a while now…and I’m pretty sure I stole this from Charles Pierce, Mitt Romney’s pitch for the 2016 nomination should be “I’m Mitt Romney, bitches, and I’m the only thing you’ve got”, followed by dropping the mic and kicking the podium over.

Our reaction, of course should be: “Please proceed, Governor”

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results each time.

Romney being considered as GOP pick for President in 2016 displays the essential insanity of the party these days.

5 Kragar  Aug 9, 2014 11:52:26am

I’m sure Romney has a binder full of reasons on why he’d choose to run again.

Jennifer Rubin, doing her best to prove that statement wrong; as well as embarrassing the WaPo in general and herself in particular.

Summary: She’s not saying ‘those people’ are always late; but ‘those people’ are always late…

If the Post pays that brain surgeon six figures a year, it’s not much of a stretch they’d promote this idiocy.

I find Romney too much of a bully to want him anywhere near the White House. We have a tough enough time being a mouse living next to an elephant that we don’t want it to roll over on us.

13 Mattand  Aug 9, 2014 12:00:40pm

You know the best part about Romney running again? The fact the guy would probably get his ass kicked a second time, and still refuse to write a concession speech before hand.

He seems to be doing just that. He doesn’t need to say “I’m the only thing you’ve got” though, the GOP seems to be saying it.

All they DO have is Mitt. A complete and thorough display of the sad sack GOP party. They can’t even get someone that appears to not be carzy to run.

And I know damned well how Romney’s people are gonna market this turd sandwich.

They’ll point out that Reagan ran for the GOP nod in 1976, and didn’t get it, so they’ll make a similar analogy in Mitt’s case. Even though he grabbed for the brass ring and didn’t make it, he’ll still be a “Reaganesque” figure.

You just watch.

The Presidency in a way is a job where if a guy want’s it so bad… He is the wrong guy. It’s just our elections are democratic, but the campaigns are a dysfunctional mess.

It’s sort of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t for the GOP; if they nominate Romney, the wingnuts will probably stay home, and the GOP loses. If they nominate one of the wingnut faves, they still lose, because that candidate would turn off the rest of the country aside from the wingnut base.

Lose-lose.

So Stormfront found this…

DNA Analysis Shows Native Americans Had European Roots.

…and the white supremacists have latched onto this with weird theories about how Native Americans were therefore all descended from white women captured during the destruction of early viking settlements or something. Also, hurr derp, that means that there was no genocide of “Native Americans” because they were really just Europeans with extra dark tans.

Arrgh…trust those guys not to bother to actually read the article they are discussing…

…Now a team of scientists led by the Danish geneticist Eske Willerslev has analyzed the boy’s origins and discovered that he descends from a Siberian tribe with roots tracing back to Europe. Some of the boy’s ancestors are likely even to have lived in present-day Germany…

I think this is it exactly. He does not, in fact, have any intention to run ever again…he is just looking to rehabilitate his image and point out to the world that he was “right” about Russia being “our number one geopolitical foe”.

Let’s say he was right. What exactly would he have done differently? Boycott the Sochi Olympics? There is certainly no chance in the world he would have ever authorized the US military to assist in the defense of Crimea or eastern Ukraine. No. Chance. At. All.

I love how one of Romney’s campaign managers had connections to pro-Russian Ukrainians and he himself sent his kid to Moscow right before the election.

Speaking of Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists, it looks like they’re in a bit of trouble, if this story is indeed accurate.

Ukrainian forces have seized a key town and are surrounding Donetsk, the largest insurgent-held city in eastern Ukraine, a top rebel commander said Saturday.

The statement by Igor Girkin, a former Russian special services officer, appeared to be a significant admission by the rebels that Ukrainian government forces are gaining the upper hand in the four-month-old fight.

He said the town of Krasnyi Luch, which lies on one of two main roads between Donetsk and the other rebel-held city of Luhansk, “has been taken by the enemy.”

“The Donetsk-Horlivka group of the fighters of Novorossiya is completely surrounded,” he said on a rebel social media page. Novosrossiya, or “New Russia,” is a term widely used by the rebels for the eastern area that seeks independence from the government in Kiev. Horlivka, where rebels and Ukrainian forces are also fighting, is 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Donetsk.

That’s apparently right from Igor Girkin himself.

American politics is primarily, as an activity, carried out by a few hundred thousand professional lobbyists and contractors who ring DC, gather outlandish salaries (compared to the menial residents of DC proper), whose purpose in life is to steer billions of dollars through Congress to the benefit of their masters.

Everything else is theatre, put on for the purposes of selling commercials on TV.
