You need to make multiple updings possible. Just for this, if nothing else.

For a little while there it looked as though the police were simply going to keep escalating their presence until something unfortunate happened. Glad they pulled back and let things settle down finally.

So far nothing worse has happened than a few random shots fired into the air (much earlier in the day) and a dumpster fire.

An 18 year old black kid (Michael Brown) in Ferguson Missouri was shot 8-10 times and killed while unarmed. Unsubstantiated rumor is that he was possibly approached by the cop for shoplifting candy or possibly just for walking in the street with a friend instead of using the sidewalk.

Police have not said a word yet, not one single word, so that doesn’t bode too well for this being somehow use of justified force. The police chief announced that there will be a news briefing at 10:00am in the morning Sunday.

Ugh, that sounds eerily similar to the Trayvon Martin shooting expect this time it was a cop instead of some douchebag neighborhood watch volunteer.

Lesser known civil rights event— Orangeburg Massacre

From wiki:

On February 8, 1968, approximately 200 protesters gathered on the campus of South Carolina State University (in the city of Orangeburg) to protest the segregation of the All Star Bowling Lane…

Police officers panicked when they thought they were being attacked (so they claimed) and fired into the crowd, killing three young men: Samuel Hammond, all-state basketball player Delano Middleton, and Henry Smith, and wounding 27 others.

Then Governor Robert Evander McNair blamed “outside Black Power agitators”, but subsequent investigations showed this allegation was without basis.

The ensuing trial, billed as the first federal trial of police officers for using excessive force at a campus protest, led to the acquittal of all nine defendants. (Cleveland) Sellers was the only individual imprisoned as a result of the incident. He served seven months in prison after a conviction for inciting to riot.

Sellers received a full pardon 25 years after his conviction, but he chose not to have his record expunged, keeping it as a “badge of honor.”

en.wikipedia.org

On my mind because Cleveland Sellers’ son, Bakari, is running for Lt. Gov. in South Carolina. The first time I heard Bakari speak, about four years ago, I felt like people must have when they first heard Barack Obama speak. He is really something.

Tyler Graves, a sprint-car racer and friend of Ward’s, told Sporting News in a phone interview that he was sitting in the Turn 1 grandstands and saw everything that happened.

“Tony pinched him into the frontstretch wall, a racing thing,” Graves said. “The right rear tire went down, he spun on the exit of (Turn) 2. They threw the caution and everything was toned down. Kevin got out of his car. … He was throwing his arms up all over the place at Tony for most of the corner.

“I know Tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars. When Tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car, the car sets sideways. It set sideways, the right rear tire hit Kevin, Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under it for a second or two and then it threw him about 50 yards.”

Looked like Tony did give him a little nudge in the corner causing the guy’s car to spin to the wall. But then for the guy to jump out and onto the track to point and run at Tony as he came back around was sadly letting his anger get the best of himself.

Does look like Tony blipped the throttle, maybe he honestly thought he had clearance. Maybe he was being an ass and thought it would just give the guy a hard bump and thereby “teach him a lesson.”

Sad end for someone only 20 years old. :(

44 ObserverArt  Aug 10, 2014 2:18:02am

Just woke up to see the story about Tony Stewart hitting a fellow driver. Stewart has had his anger issues on the track in the past. I am not saying it was on purpose, but it will be looked at very closely. People at the track seemed to think it may have been deliberate.

Too many times drivers get pissed and walk out toward the offending car/driver to shake a fist, toss a bird of throw a helmet or gloves. This hopefully will put an end to that.

RIP racer. Sad for everyone. Damn.

Good morning…

About the pics at the top of this thread: I watched “The Butler” last night. Pretty good movie. Forrest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey are both good in their roles. My only criticism of the film is that it had a Forrest Gump quality to it with regard to one of Whitaker’s on screen sons, who manages to be at the center of every major Civil Rights incident, riding the Freedom Bus, going to Jail with MLK, joining the Black Panthers, etc. Then I remembered the opening credits, where it read, “Based on THE true story.” (vs Based on a true story.) So while the butler did serve eight presidents, the story wasn’t about him, so much as civil rights during his employment.

67 lawhawk  Aug 10, 2014 5:35:07am

Having just been in MO and the STL area, it’s all too easy to find history of slavery and racism. The Old Courthouse where Dred Scott was put on trial, and whose trial ended up changing the course of history and not for the better. Slavery may have ended with the Civil War (which the South lost, since they need reminding again), but institutional racism is alive and well (and the Conservatives on the Supreme Court need reminding every day given their ruling on the VRA).

Racism is alive and well in the US, and this shooting is yet another piece of evidence as proof. Unarmed black men can’t walk down a street without fear of being killed - by vigilantes like Zimmerman or law enforcement officers with loose trigger fingers. Armed white supremacists, insurrectionists, and extremist militia types who think they’re sovereign citizens can cow local communities and act menacing towards law enforcement with little fear of repercussion.

Unequal enforcement of the law is inherently racist.

Ummm… President Bush set the timetable in motion, and keeping US troops in Iraq was up to successfully negotiating a SOFA that would be acceptable to the US. No deal was ever concluded because Iraq refused to immunize US forces. So the US left according to the schedule set by President Bush.

According to wingnuts, the President could have secured a new SOFA that got everything we wanted, but he just didn’t care enough to negotiate for it. That if he’d really wanted our troops to stay, he would have found a way to pressure Maliki and the Iraqi parliament into accepting an open-ended American occupation. How do they know this? Because we’re still in Japan and Germany. That’s all the evidence they have that it can be done.

Watching CBS news, and they’ve got “Crisis in the MidEast” banners with a Palestinian flag that fades into an Israeli flag.

Memo to CBS. Violence and crisis in the MidEast is not distilled to purely Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

There’s a civil war in Syria. Violence ripping Iraq apart. Failed states in Libya, Yemen and Somalia. A failing state in Egypt. Don’t use graphics that are clearly misleading and wrong.

Those are all crises. And none have anything to do with Israel. In fact, several of those ongoing events have a higher death toll than the current Gaza conflict. By a factor of 100. 170,000 dead in Syria. ~1,700 dead in Gaza. But because Israel, the media attention is where it’s at.

For example, LBJ once asked one of his personal staff to drive his dogs to Texas (apparently the beagles didn’t like flying). The guy explained how difficult it was for a black man to find gas and hotels in the south, what could happen if he stopped to walk the dogs or let them shit by the side of the road, etc. This was news to Johnson, and had a major effect on how he thought about the Civil Rights Act and what he wanted included.

Yeah, I saw that. He must be getting nervous.

I wonder what he’s going to do? Is he going to go back to Russia if it looks like the gig is up, or will he stay and fight until his last bullet - which I imagine he’ll use on himself; I don’t think he’ll allow himself to be taken alive by Ukrainian forces.

I sort of wish he went back to Russia. It would be very exciting to watch what happens next. Can they allow the head of the terrorists simply live on as if nothing has happened? I suppose they could in some other situation, what with all the sanctions and such. But now that he has an enormous political capital among wingnuts… Would Putin allow it?

I suppose the probability that something happens to him on the Ukrainian territory is … pretty significant.

There is also this matter of executions on his orders. This is something that basically requires some legal response from the Russian side, even if the “military actions” were otherwise deemed legal.

I just really don’t imagine Girkin surviving this conflict. Either he’ll kill himself or he’ll choose to go out in a blaze of glory - maybe leading a “banzai charge” against a Ukrainian position or something like that.

Provided he’s not otherwise done in during battle.

Hoping to add a little more rain yet this weekend - after our significant surplus to start the season, this summer has seriously dried out, and now we find ourselves needing just a bit more moisture to put us over the hump into fall. It seems I missed quite a bit while I was in my little offline bubble last night. How go things in the war on derp?

I find this rather interesting; apparently Putin sacked 18 top-ranking officials, including some heads from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and others.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sacked 18 high-ranking officers from their posts, according to a Ukrainian news website.

In a purging move by the embattled world leader, heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Federal Drug Control Service and the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation lost their jobs.

The dismissals, reported exclusively by Euromaidan Press, are said to have been carried out in secret.

While no official announcement appears to have been made by Mr Putin, reporters have posted links to the Kremlin’s official website - which can be translated into English - that show a list of staff “released” from their posts.

The move is understood to have been made on Wednesday, 6 August, but has not been reported in any of the mainstream media, either at home or abroad.

I agree to a degree. He was not interested in spending tons of money to fight stupid wars in countries where no one has ever won a damn thing.

But, isn’t having a hands-off policy as far as military (costly) a doctrine? It is a belief, a policy.

It seems the Republican idea of foreign doctrine is that Obama needed to clean up the mess that he inherited. That would be their doctrine.

Truthfully, I am so frustrated this morning by all the jaw flapping about everything, I really can’t think straight. I’m gonna stay on the sidelines and watch.

Russia’s Fast And Elusive TOPOL-M Ballistic Missile Is Scary As Hell

TOPOL-M Ballistic Missile

The giant TOPOL-M road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile is one frightening creation of mankind. It can hide in cities, forests, or even nuclear-attack hardened bunkers. It’ll travel at over 15,000 MPH while taking evasive action and pumping out decoys on the way to its target.

…The TOPOL-M missile was designed to penetrate an American anti-ballistic missile shield by leveraging high-speed, a relatively small infrared signature during its boost phase, advanced decoys (as many as ten carried on a single missile), maneuvering mid-course capability, and maneuvering independently targeted reentry vehicles, of which it can carry up to six, although they are said to carry just one operationally.

The missile’s high speed shortens the time anyone can react to it, and every second matters when it comes to ballistic missile defense. The rocket motors were designed for a short, very powerful boost stage so that American space-based infrared detection satellites (SBIRS, DSP) have less time to detect and track it. Its decoys make it hard for radar to adequately track the correct target, and its countermeasures are said to have been upgraded to fool infrared tracking systems, which are use for mid-course interception. The missile and reentry vehicles’ ability to dynamically maneuver outside of their ballistic track makes producing an effective kill solution, or even predicting the TOPOL-M’s target, problematic. All these features come together to make a missile that is probably outside of America’s missile defense capabilities today, and the sheer number of them that exists makes the idea of defending against anything but a limited barrage totally invalid.

There’s a quote that was posted here earlier that when you rev those cars on dirt, the rear end pitches right. Even if Stewart was just revving the engine to scare Ward, he should have realized how the car was going to react if he punched it.

I doubt he meant to kill Ward, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to put a scare into him and things went horribly wrong. But Stewart’s got real anger issues, IMO. He let it get the better of him last night, and behind the wheel of a race car is a bad place for that to happen.

I agree…. there just isn’t enough information yet. My understanding is that they (imagine the track, possibly NASCAR) has asked that if anybody had any footage to send it to them. I don’t in any way think that Smoke TRIED to hit Kevin Ward, the most likely possibilities are that

1. He was going to just throw dirt on him, and the car jumped / Ward moved down.

2. He didn’t see Ward, dark track, driver in black firesuit, did see him and tried to go around, but it was too late.

3. Had already started to gas the engine, car started to slip up the track, then he sees Ward, but it too late. (Sprint cars don’t have a transmission or clutch as such, they have a T-handle that runs to the rear differential and pull it in or out of gear, but no clutch or tranny. That means that they have to keep goosing the engine to keep it going)

Sprint cars don’t have spotters on the radio telling the driver what’s up ahead, so Stewart was going into the situation without the benefit of knowing the driver was on the track.

In any case, the lawyers and insurance companies are going to be busy for the foreseeable future.

But beneath my intellectualism and morality there is a bit of primal blood lust that wants to kill the bastards. String them up. Make them suffer as they made other people suffer. My people. Eye for an eye.

As to racing safety? The easiest solution to learn from instances like this is to stay in your fucking car until the safety vehicles arrive unless it’s on fire. And don’t walk into the middle of the track while 700hp drift rockets are flying by at highway speeds.

Also, drivers who do shit like this (get onto tracks, confront other drivers, throw shit at moving cars, whatever) should be penalized heavily in points or suspensions.

More important Israel is ‘the good guys’ and we’re on their side so we’re ‘the good guys.’

In Syria, there are no ‘good guys’ so we don’t get involved because then we might end up being the ‘bad guys.’

168 ausador  Aug 10, 2014 10:03:26am

Still not much info on what happened but apparently that “shoplifting candy” rumor was false, no mention of it now. How did a cop approaching two men for “walking in the street” end up with one of them shot multiple times? No real explanation for that yet… :(

A news conference was held simultaneously in a different building. There, St. Louis County Police Jon Belmar said the incident began when the officer encountered two men on the street near an apartment complex on Saturday afternoon in a predominantly black suburb a few miles north of downtown St. Louis.

Belmar said one of the men pushed the officer back into his squad car and the struggle began. Belmar said at least one shot was fired inside the police car.

The struggle spilled out into the street where the teenager was shot. Police have not disclosed his name, but family members say it was 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Shell casings found at the scene matched the officers’ gun. Belmar said the teen was shot multiple times, but it wasn’t yet known how many.

“It was more than just a couple,” he said.

Intellectually I agree with you. I am opposed to capital punishment, for many reasons, not least of which is that I am not a killer, and supporting capital punishment makes me one. It makes me no better than those I would condemn.

But beneath my intellectualism and morality there is a bit of primal blood lust that wants to kill the bastards. String them up. Make them suffer as they made other people suffer. My people. Eye for an eye.

Civilization is about subsuming those urges for revenge, and I do. But I’m not a saint, and they’re still there, down in the depths of my primitive soul. I can understand when others, closer to the situation, do not. Would I have strung up Mussolini myself? No. But I think I understand why those who did so did.

Going through the process of trial will also be much more of a deterrent than being lynched, as it will expose the defendants for what they are, the deeds they did, and not give them any “out” as to having been disposed of by the “fascists”.

re: #140 Rightwingconspirator

What is their typical speed under yellow? I’m not a sprint car fan, they look like barely guided missiles to me. It’s so easy for a guy to drift offline and then open wheels touch, chaos and ballistics take over.

Just getting back…working on wood stripping (still!).

Well, they were just given the yellow caution, so I imagine they were down to about 50-60 mph at the time and then they probably would go another lap to get down to about 40. The engines are so radical they probably would stall at anything slower.

I’ve always considered a dirt sprint car to be a fast tractor. They are very basic…just engine, rear end quick change, drive shaft, tubes, gas tank and some shocks and basic brakes. And those big ass staggered rear tires which are also part of what may have happened. The rears are considerably wider and taller on the right side.

Under power the damn things want to go sideways more then forward…a product of all that engine and short wheelbase. So your reference of ‘barely guided’ is a good one.

Well, there’s a hint of truth to it. The President has not really defined his presidency by foreign policy, unlike the last guy who spent all his time fucking with people half a world away and leaving the rest of us at the mercy of the banks. In fact, it seems like most every Republicans president since Nixon has defined his time in office by his exploits overseas.

That may be because if they did things at home it would be close to admitting that there are problems at home. Since America is perfect, in the so-called conservative’s eyes, there can be no problems at home.

Also, in the so-called conservative’s eyes, the rest of the world is imperfect and must be perfected. So they expend most of their time and effort elsewhere. Best of all if they fail it doesn’t make America less perfect. It’s ‘those people’s’ fault for not accepting American advice and aid.

I don’t doubt for a second that Stewart didn’t know he ran Ward into the fence and would probably know there’s a crash and ensuing yellow.

Also, the blue car the passed Ward before Stewart was running at a much lower speed and not sideways. Stewart was going faster than the other cars. I’m somewhat incredulous that he didn’t have some perspective on what was going on.

Being an admin on FB is a major PITA, and not easy. I run several small groups (Ukrainian-themed, not political) and have to deal with spammers trying to join, people making rude and nasty comments, and people trying to post political material. I take care of things, but FB is not my life, and I’m not on line 24/7 watching what’s going on. I was even off-line for 2 weeks this summer, so things got dealt with slowly.

If you want something removed, or find something objectionable, the best thing to do is to message the admin, not click on the “report” link. I have no idea what that does, but it doesn’t report to me. If you want to help out policing the site, write the admin and offer to do so; maybe they’ll make you a co-admin and you can share in the fun.

That being said, there is a reason all new members need approval in my groups. And I check their pages. The occasional nut or spammer gets by, but I’ve prevented several Russian Nazis and many spammers (Moroccan for some reason) from joining.

EDIT: I have co-admins in 2 of 3 groups, and the third is very specialist with not much activity, so it’s not like I abandoned things for two weeks. We were promised WiFi at the camp in Ukraine, and it was there when we signed the contract. When the telephone line went down, though, no one ever got around to fixing it……

A U.S. national may acquire foreign nationality by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. national may not lose the nationality of the country of birth. U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one nationality or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another nationality does not risk losing U.S. nationality. However, a person who acquires a foreign nationality by applying for it may lose U.S. nationality. In order to lose U.S. nationality, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign nationality voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. nationality.

From the US State Department

Belmar said at a news conference Sunday morning that a Ferguson Police officer had an encounter with two people. He says one person allegedly pushed the officer back into patrol car and assaulted the officer.

He says there was a struggle over the officers’ weapon and one shot was fired in the car. The officer then got out of his vehicle and shot at “a subject.”

He says the man suffered more than a couple gunshots, but “not many more than that.”

What a hopeful statement this is. That last part, sadly, has no bearing on reality, as racist shitbags have a tendency to see everyone who isn’t one of them as part of a great grand conspiracy to wipe them out. They usually claim that any guilty verdict handed to racists for acting on their deep beliefs is a “lynching” by “PC commie librul thugs”.

re: #203 dr. luba

From what I read, yes he can. The State Dept. discourages it, but apparently it can be done. Again, from State dept.

Intent can be shown by the person’s statements or conduct. The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy because of the problems it may cause. Claims of other countries on dual national U.S. nationals may conflict with U.S. law, and dual nationality may limit U.S. Government efforts to assist nationals abroad. The country where a dual national is located generally has a stronger claim to that person’s allegiance.

If memory serves, renouncing your US Citizenship consists basically of going to a US Embassy or Consulate, making a sworn statement and turning in your passport.

I would have figured that they would be out on the Sunday Talk Circus, I guess they don’t know how bad this could be, and are going to hold back. I’m sure that DimJim will weigh in before the sun sets today however.

Stewart running over Ward has gotten more MSM TV time this AM, in my unscientific estimate.

And this folks is why police need to wear contour cams on the uniform. The dashcam ain’t gettin it done.

I agree pretty much but there has to be a way to not use them at certain times. The Police unions don’t want them for multiple reasons some of which are valid objections. Personal privacy when they aren’t dealing with the public for one, getting witness statements and talking to informants for another.

But giving the officer the option of turning the device off when not needed means that some events will not be recorded either because the incident came as a surprise to the officer or because he…”forgot”…to turn it on. Any law mandating their use would have to include a way to shield their contents from random FOIA requests and fishing expiditions that would withstand constitutional challenge.

That’s an AP story. And notice who’s claiming the crowd yelled “Kill the police.”

St. Louis County police said a large crowd confronted officers following the shooting, yelling such things as “kill the police.”

Precisely. Nonetheless, I’m sure that wingnut crowd will be all over this in no time at all.

And I wanted to thank you for promoting my article yesterday to the Front Page. I was asleep when you did that, but it was the first thing I saw when I woke up today.

I’m just waiting on the moment when a GOTP drops the N-bomb on a hot mic, live or in social media :(
I’m cynical, I know…

I’m genuinely shocked it hasn’t happened at this point. As goofy as this sounds, I think conservatives/GOTP types have enough discipline to know they can dog whistle as long as they want, as long they don’t go N-bomb.

Making vague comments about people based on race or religion gives right wingers enough wiggle room to go “What??? I never said that!!! You must be the REAL racist, since that’s what you think!”

As soon as they go with the blatant racial slur, their little game blows up in their faces. People who are naive/stupid enough to believe the whole “They never specifically used a slur” charade will turn on them in an instant.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said at a news conference that an officer encountered two people on the street near an apartment complex Saturday afternoon in Ferguson, a predominantly black suburb a few miles north of downtown St. Louis.

Belmar said one of the men pushed the officer back into his squad car and the struggle began. Belmar said at least one shot was fired from the officer’s gun inside the police car.

The struggle spilled out into the street, where one of the two people was shot multiple times. Belmar said the exact number of shots wasn’t known, but “It was more than just a couple.” He also said all shell casings found at the scene matched the officer’s gun.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said the man who was shot was unarmed.

Oh yeah, good catch. CNS merely titled it for maximum effect.

I’m sure CNS ‘journalists’ will be doing some crack fact finding on this story.

Saw a couple of tweets from people who were there last night that acknowledged that a couple of people in the crowd out of the hundreds there did yell that out at some point. People were hurt and angry and with many people protesting of course someone out of the group is going to take it too far. :(

But the news articles make it sound like the whole crowd was chanting it or something rather than it being a few isolated incidents. I notice the headlines are…

Angry Crowd: “Kill The Police”

and not,

“Police Officer Kills Unarmed Teenager.”

Our press sucks… :(

To me the solution there is that the footage (100% of patrol and interview/arrest times) would be blocked from any but limited uses. As in criminal, not civil. “Interests of justice” no human resources or annual reviews. Something like that.

Off to go see Guardians. Allegedly Vin Diesels best acting ever, lol.

And from most of the tweets from participants, they were chanting “No justice, no peace,” which makes a lot more sense (but, as it doesn’t fit the right wing narrative, will be deep-sixed by tomorrow for sure.)

Somehow, I don’t think they’d be at risk of being shot.

re: #128 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

Gah repetitive stress injury sucks. Back to icing and resting my arm.

If it’s related to mousing around on a desktop PC several hours per day, I have a suggestion: Make an arm/elbow rest that extends about 1.5 feet from the underside of your desk/table, preferably in a way that allows it to swivel a bit, left and right.

It can be as simple as a 1in x 3in x 3ft board, with a hook-and-eye attachment to the underside of a wooden desk or table. If computer table/desk is metal or glass, just glue a small block of wood to its underside first, and screw a hook (or eye) thingy into that.

Hints: Screw the eye (or hook) into the top side of the board, about 8 to 12 inches from the far end. That end will then press against the underside of the desk/table, but is free to move left/right.

Options: Glue a small block of wood or foam to the top side of your support board, at the far end. It should be about same thickness as the gap-space for the hook-and-eye suspension attachment, keeping board closer to level. Sandpaper the board to avoid splinters. Maybe attach some foam padding for your arm/elbow.

Some of the Butler’s interactions with Presidents are also amalgamated from other staff (although Cecil & his wife being official guests at a state dinner during the Reagan admin is a true thing).

In the 1960s, Otis Redding was driving his Cadillac from Memphis to Macon GA, and had car problems while traveling thru Mississippi.

Knowing full well that no white Mississippi garage mechanic would fix that Cadillac, if he knew it was Otis’s car - Otis convinced the mechanic how important it was to get “my master’s car fixed and home to him.”

R & B bands back in that day got into the car and drove straight thru with no unnecessary stops until the next show. If possible they “bicycled” two shows, one at 8-9:30 PM in one town, then on to the next show at 11 PM in the next venue.

re: #246 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

My first was with a glass table, but I didn’t even need a hook-and-eye suspension. Just slid my board between horizontal parts of the metal frame support structure.
