What the hell is going on in Missouri?
US News • Views: 30,842

Is this Afghanistan, or Missouri?

How can there possibly be any excuse for training weapons on people in a non-violent protest?

Ferguson is turning into the Gaza strip of Missouri.

The husband just reported a spam message advertising “how to survive a martial law takeover,” with the information behind a suspicious tinyurl address.

I told him what he really needed to worry about was marital law.

This really is the kinda shit you expect to read about happening in an authoritarian basketcase like Russia, not the US. I can’t help but imagine how many people in other countries are reading tweets about this and thinking “And these guys are supposed to be the beacon of freedom and liberty.”

That’s not public safety, or preventative. That response is a big F U provocation. I hate to think what tiny spark could set this off, such as an arrest of protesters for standing in the street.

22 Stanley Sea  Aug 13, 2014 4:58:37pm

The police have lost any semblance of protect and serve. This will take years to fix.

The fix is to disband that department and rebuild from scratch.

In the meantime-Photogs there—get clear images of the faces behind the guns and the officers in charge. Gather evidence.

I was listening to a BBC documentary on the history of soul music while reading here. The segment featured the late 60’s and the riots and closed with Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”? as I scrolled through the Twitter feeds on this post. This is sad to say, but none of this shocks me. The police’s actions - the reactions of the vile hate mongers - these are not new phenomena. Thank you, Charles, for staying on this story. I’m also thankful for the brave reporters and the city alderman who at this point are risking their lives covering this story. There are a few good people left in journalism.

And totally off topic Backwoods Sleuth, but I just saw your post downstairs and wanted to send you and your family prayers and hugs in a live thread. {{{Sleuth Family}}}.

For the record, I have several friends who are cops and they’re really cool people, but in times like this I always remember my grand da telling me in the 1960’s that “Just because 99% of them are assholes doesn’t mean the whole barrel is rotten.” I’ve told that story to my cop friends and they just nod their heads at that kernel of truth.

Come to think of it, I’ve related what grand da Patty said to dozens of cops over the years and they always nod, and not just the Irish ones.

So, local cops and BLM backed down when heavily armed white militiamen pointed all manner of firearms at them when they came a knocking on Cliven Bundy’s ranch for his multiple violations of federal law (trespassing and refusing to pay grazing fees).

Here, in Ferguson, you’ve got the St. Louis County police and the Ferguson PD aiming all manner of firearms at peaceably assembled black people who are protesting the death of a young black man from their community who was killed at the hands of a Ferguson police officer.

No, there’s no disconnect there at all. None at all. No stacked deck. No racial imbalance. No racial profiling. Nope. Nothing to see.

The MO governor apparently thinks this is all going swimmingly well, and that county and local police pointing their weapons at peaceably assembled citizens is acceptable behavior. Instead of calling on the PDs, especially the county police, to back off, they’re moving in like the very jack booted thugs that the right wing extremists think are coming after them.

And those same right wing nutters will say that not without the slightest irony given that they are racists themselves.

Actually, a few are mentioning the “police state” and freedom of assembly.

Reporters being arrested and a NOTAM banning overflights makes a pretty good case that the police there are imposing a police state. Cameras are now seen as instruments of criminality by the police in Ferguson. They got the guns.

re: #100 Lidane

I would not let any worries about teabaggers stop anything that needs doing. They can be hauled off to jail along with some police. Actually I think they would just stay home. This ain’t Bundy ranch.

Where the hell are all the “good guys with guns” who are supposed to be violently resisting and overthrowing the evil government? Oh, right, black people, I’m sorry.

I’m pretty sure the NRA sees the guys with the guns as the good guys. Matter of fact, they are such good guys they are equipment like an army of a small country.

I can hear Wayne La PU saying “Good job boys!”

There is at least one black Ferguson cop in photos. There are three total, I think (two are women IIRC).

It wouldn’t surprise me if they keep the black female officers in the booking room on matron duty and not out in the field.

119 goddamnedfrank  Aug 13, 2014 5:34:01pm

Generally, scoping a cop or game warden is considered a felony offense. It’s one of the things they teach in hunter safety courses. Why are cops allowed to scope unarmed protesters, how is that not a crime?

123 wrenchwench  Aug 13, 2014 5:35:00pm

The building I have my shop in was owned by a woman from the St. Louis area from the time she inherited it (her grandfather built it) until she died a couple of years ago. I didn’t know much about her untli she died and I read some obituaries and heard stories from her nephew, who inherited my building from her.

She was mayor of Ladue for 20 years. She tried to ban cohabitation in Ladue. She tried to make a resident remove a political lawn sign she didn’t like. That case went to the Supreme Court, where the mayor lost.

I told this to a customer who turned out to also be from that area. I told her the story from my landlady’s nephew about when he visited her and they went to the Shake Shack. Turns out my customer had worked at the Shake Shack, but said, ‘If they had known I was Jewish, I never would have been hired. That’s what Ladue is like.’

So I figure the reason those cops have to be so hard in Ferguson is to avoid and spillover to Ladue.

Yeah—Orangeburg was merely black college students, so whatevah//

I had never heard of it until I met Bakari Sellers, the son of the only person arrested at Orangeburg (Bakari’s running for Lt. Gov.) I’m not from South Carolina originally, and I’m guessing most of the “folks” around these parts don’t talk about it much, but after hearing Bakari tell his dad’s story, I started reading about it and was astounded that I had never heard about it. It was before Kent State, but as you say, the people killed weren’t white so…

BTW—his dad, Cleveland Sellers, received a full pardon 25 years after the fact, but turned it down.

The actions by the Ferguson PD and the county police will cost both tremendously. Who will end up paying?

The people who are currently having guns pointed at them.

Those who are responsible for this mess - the mayor, the police chief, and the county police chief aren’t going to pay.

This is the kind of legal inequity that badly needs to end —- some personal financial responsibility for those at the top would make a big difference.

I get the feeling that’s why there’s a decentralized command, with the Ferguson police chief not being in overall command of what’s going on in his backyard. If the people getting roughed up and arrested sue, then he can plead ignorance and say he had no idea this was happening. And with the cops purposefully concealing their faces and either not wearing name tags or having them concealed, they’re making sure no names can be connected with departments.

234 lawhawk  Aug 13, 2014 6:16:32pm

Where did the money come from for the county PD to have those vehicles we see prominently in the photos above? It came from a DHS grant.

The reasoning behind having those vehicles? This is rich:

The role of local law enforcement changed drastically after 9/11 with the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and a slew of new mandates designed to help such agencies deal with possible terrorist threats.

Belmar explained that these mandates meant the acquisition of lot of new gear over the past decade, but the county lacked a mobile home for all these items. The equipment truck was manufactured by Farber Specialty Vehicles and is designed to be exactly that.

“It gives us the ability to have 100 percent of our equipment with us if we were to encounter an active shooter, mass casualty event or even a chemical, biological or nuclear event,” he said.

The equipment covers a wide range of tools, including robots of various sizes, breathing apparatus, protective suits and instruments for the county’s “cut team.” It also can serve as staging center during emergencies.

“We can have it where the tactical operations team is, so we have a very small command post within the truck,” Belmar said. “It really gives us the ability to satisfy the mandate to respond as effectively as possible.”

The second vehicle is a “Bearcat” armored truck that has a unique feature. Attached to the roof of the plated body is a platform that can be elevated up to 17 feet, something that Belmar said no other law enforcement agency in the Midwest has right now.

“It allows us to put officers on the second floor of a building immediately, and we can get inside the fuselage of an airliner,” he said. “If we don’t have something like this, it’s going to make a bad day worse.”

The tough truck is capable of withstanding impacts from a .50 caliber machine gun and will be considered a regional asset, available for use by the St. Louis SWAT team and other agencies if necessary.

Nowhere does it say that the equipment gives them the right to point all that gear at unarmed citizens demonstrating peacefully. They are using gear that they got via a grant ostensibly to improve response should they be subject to a terror attack to crowd control.

This is by definition disproportionate use of force.

As always, CYA extends far beyond what any rational risk assessment would lead to. The police brass are legally and financially untouchable. Thus the only apparent motive for running this stupid circus in quasi black-ops mode is to make responsibility for this clusterfuck less clear.

This is pointless and self-defeating because the quasi black-ops by itself is going to badly damage the reputations of all involved.

In 1994 in Lexington KY, my Freshmen year of High School a Lexington-Fayette County officer shot and killed a young man named Tony Sullivan. Tony was hiding in his girlfirends closet in the housing projects, and was in the process of being arrested. He was comming out of the closet with his hands up, unarmed. A white officer shot him in the head and killed him. An investigation by the FBI would conlclude that the shooting was accidental. That didn’t matter in the immediate aftermath. I along with many other people that lived in the projects marched to City hall downtown. Community leaders and more importantly, the LEADERSHIP OF THE CITY AND THE POLICE FORCE, worked together to hear frustrations and to calm the situation. There were no sniper rifles drawn, no rubber bullets or tear gas. The Police did everything that law enforcement in Ferguson is not doing.

Lexington KY today is seen as a very progressive and accepting city. We have an openly gay mayor, and while there are still issues of racial divide here, the Police and Minority communities have built good relationships. Good amounts of the Police force are Minority/Female, including retired Chief of Police Beatty.

Seems hard to believe that for me, 20 years ago I was on the streets of my city after an unarmed black male was killed by a police officer, and things actually were in a better situation than they are now in how its handled.

Thanks for the link. A while back I looked into the Kent State shootings more closely, and the main impression that has lingered is that Kent State made a big impression because the people killed weren’t the kind of people ordinarily killed by police for protesting (i.e., they were white and not poor/homeless/mentally ill).

And do not forget the shooting was indiscriminate and harmed students out of the protest going to class and wondering what was going on. One was a ROTC student.

And, similar to what I fear in this case, there was a bad chain of command in the troops. It was legend a rogue Lt. was pissed at the guy flipping him off and ordered the firing. But, the commander claims they were not to shoot. Pass the buck, release an official report, sweep up the details and call it a day.

The point is, for all the right wing bleating about ZOMG TYRANNY POLICE STATE GUBMINT OVERREACH over Bundy Ranch, Hobby Lobby and any other number of things, Ferguson is the real deal, but because it’s black people being targeted, the right are cheering it on.

Hello Lizards! Been a long time since I’ve last logged in. Picked a hell of a time to do so.

As far as I’m concerned, the actions taken tonight by the local police to disperse the protests amount to police brutality, and definitely an excessive use of force (concussion grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets).

I get it. My uncle and cousin served honorably with the Indiana State Patrol. It’s really tough to acknowledge legitimate failings of law enforcement when there are people who like to jump on any little thing they can in support of their “fuck the police” mentality. re: #443 Jenner7

From the live feed, people were just standing there. Then all of a sudden, they start running, then you could see the tear gas. I saw no bottle thrown, no rocks, no cocktails, nothing to provoke this. Did anyone see the crowd throw anything?? Then, about 20 minutes later, they gave their last warning and starting with gas again.

I didn’t see any hostile actions in that video. Just a bunch of people standing in the street. It wasn’t even really an organized protest. A couple of people had megaphones, that’s all. The cops opened up with LRAD, followed by rubber bullets and what I assume was tear gas.

Just wow. I can’t imagine the Philly police behaving this way, and I’ve heard some real horror stories about them.

I’m sorry, but someone needs to step in stop this shit before more people get killed. Does the President have any power to deal with this?

Oh the irony. These are the same people who think health care reform means we’re on the way to Nazi Germany and cattle cars but here they are cheering arresting reporters and cracking down on dissidents. Have to say. I despise and depised the Tea Party movement that breitbart.com fomented. Think it a venom on our national dialogue even but not once did I hope that the police would not only repress but brutally repress that movement. But then again these are the same people who cried when Pinochet died.

Animals seem to just want to use the incidents like this as an opportunity to go out & commit more crimes….. I dealt with it for 30 years and can’t see it changing in my lifetime. The race card itself seems to be the cause of too many issues of this nature ! ……. Just keep our brothers & sisters in your prayers, they have a rough road ahead.

Anyone that wants to push the ‘race card’ has to be totally blind to not note that race relations have not been this bad in MANY DECADES.
So it would appear that having a “black president” was not a really healing or good idea.
OR one could take note since this asshat has taken office,HE has had very bad relations with the white race !.
He took sides during the Martin / Zimmerman case in Fla.
He took sides during the arrest of a “black professor” against a police officer.
He has taken sides in this incident [ NONE OF HIS BUSINESS ].
And with Sharpton on the scene ,it got worse = add the “new black panthers” to the mix and of course threats to the life of the officer, now we have a real party.
Sad that I was on marches during the 1960’s for the NAACP & CORE [ national assoc. of COLORED people = great name huh ? ] and we accomplished NOTHING.
Unless you call MUCH worse actions from young backs as a improvement ?.
