Watch Live: Press Conference With Gov. Nixon and Highway Patrol Officials in Ferguson

US News • Views: 23,138

[Live event concluded…]

That was quite a scene. The news is that Gov. Nixon is declaring a state of emergency and imposing a curfew, from 12 midnight to 5am. He said nothing about releasing the incident report for the shooting, or the autopsy results for Michael Brown.

The audience was very incensed, and there were many angry interruptions. I don’t know if they intended to take more questions, but Nixon was clearly rattled, and beat a hasty retreat after just a few minutes.

I don’t think this helped very much.

So far, so good, Nixon.

He actually can’t do that, I don’t think. Although the state’s attorney general likely could. Is that an independently elected position in Missouri?

I am imagining Bill Clinton at that podium. The difference between an extraordinary politician and an average one like Jay Nixon is so critical at a moment like this. Nixon doesn’t have this crowd. Johnson mostly does. Clinton would own it.

Will the curfew be enforced on the white side of town?

Except the Rambo wannabes weren’t enforcing a curfew. They were encouraging chaos. I don’t see where a curfew of midnight to 5 a.m. is a bad thing in a situation where idiot looters are showing up after midnight to smash shit.

Didn’t realize the time, should have checked before opening my mouth. I figured it would be another dusk to dawn deal. My mistake.

Part of my reaction was also due to the fact the Gov ignored Ferguson for like four days before he got off his ass and did something.

Understandable. When I first saw “curfew” I was thinking the same thing, but then Johnson mentioned the actual hours in the press conference, and it seems like not a substantial burden on free speech, protests, etc.

We’ll see.

I need to take a break from some of this. Someone on FB posted a video of a black man supposedly telling other black people to knock off the looting. Haven’t watched the clip, but it’s sourced from toprightnews.com.

Maybe I’m wrong, but based on the description of the video and the name of the site, I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of where they’re coming from.

Also, the woman who posted is a nice person, but critical thinking ain’t exactly her strong suit. She’s Goth conservative, for what that’s worth.

41 goddamnedfrank  Aug 16, 2014 1:51:02pm

LOL. Angela Merkel’s hypocrisy is finally coming to light.

German secret agents ‘eavesdropped on phone calls’ by Hillary Clinton and John Kerry

German secret agents intercepted one of Hillary Clinton’s phone calls while she was US secretary of state and also listened in to a call by John Kerry, her successor, it emerged this weekend, in an embarrassing reversal of the spying scandal that blew up when it was revealed last year that America bugged Angela Merkel’s mobile phone.

Mrs Clinton was on a US government plane when German intelligence services overheard her call and, against their own internal protocol, stored it, intelligence sources told German media.

The intercepted phone call took place in 2012 between Mrs Clinton and Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general, who had just returned from negotiations in Syria and wanted to brief her, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported on Saturday.

Der Spiegel also claimed that agents from the state intelligence services listened in on a phone call by John Kerry, the current US secretary of state - and that Germany has been spying on its NATO ally Turkey since 2009.

Looks like her Pollyanna routine was a bunch of cynical horse shit.

I don’t know. I think Johnson handled himself well, and the reasoning behind the curfew was explained pretty much. I didn’t get to hear Nixon at first, but he’s obviously out of his league. Like I said above, we’ll see how well this plays out later tonight. It’s obvious this situation isn’t going to go away for a while.

Bottom line is if this had been a white kid in a white neighborhood, this would be being handled completely differently. When was the last time you heard of an unarmed 18-year-old white kid getting gunned down in the street by a cop and left there for hours, then MRAPS & snipers being brought in to stop demonstrations, the shooter cop being whisked out of town, etc.

I can’t recall ever hearing of something like that. The people of Ferguson might be black & underprivileged, but they’re not deaf, dumb and blind.

Sometimes ABL lets her mouth get ahead of her brain.

The looting didn’t start until late in the evening last night, after midnight, IIRC. If the community really cares about the businesses in the community, as well as having their say, they would retire at midnight and be done with it.

Also, Johnson said in the presser that they wouldn’t use MRAPs or tear gas to enforce the curfew, but “communication.”

Yeah, I get the suspicion. I’m thinking people should see how shit goes down tonight before acting like it’s an affront to their free speech rights, etc. to have the curfew. Johnson’s tactics were solid Thursday.

I don’t think any of the community wants to see more ugly scenes like last night with the stores being looted.

How we’d cover Ferguson if it happened in another country

FERGUSON — Chinese and Russian officials are warning of a potential humanitarian crisis in the restive American province of Missouri, where ancient communal tensions have boiled over into full-blown violence.

“We must use all means at our disposal to end the violence and restore calm to the region,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in comments to an emergency United Nations Security Council session on the America crisis.

The crisis began a week ago in Ferguson, a remote Missouri village that has been a hotbed of sectarian tension. State security forces shot and killed an unarmed man, which regional analysts say has angered the local population by surfacing deep-seated sectarian grievances. Regime security forces cracked down brutally on largely peaceful protests, worsening the crisis.

and it goes on from there, worth reading the entire piece… Vox may not be great at actual news, but clearly they can manage satire just fine.

If the Governor had any brains he never would have issued a State of Emergency or instituted an official curfew. All that needed to be done was for the cops to announce that existing noise disturbance ordinances would again start being enforced throughout normal sleeping hours. That people could continue to gather and hold peaceful vigil for Brown, but that there had to be some modicum of respect for the community’s routine patterns of activity and people’s need to rest without being interrupted all through the night by crazy shit.

After a Cincinnati policeman shot Timothy Thomas in 2001 a curfew was imposed for 3 nights. Those of us who lived in neighborhoods with higher African American population complied. There were accusations that the more affluent white neighborhoods were not as constrained.

The first night half most of us were in the neighborhood Kroger picking up last minute necessities. I recall that everyone was very polite and courteous to each other. It was as if we were determined to prove to each other we could still be nice, considerate neighbors. Not a scenario “conventional wisdom” would have predicted.

We’re well beyond “existing noise disturbance ordinances” at this point. You have looters coming in, protesters protecting businesses throughout the night, and a noise disturbance is going to defuse that situation?

Honestly, I’m surprised someone (looter or protester) didn’t get severely injured last night.

I have no comment on the “state of emergency” part of it, but I don’t think a curfew is uncalled for at this point.

If they violate the curfew in mass, then those claiming that it’s lawlessness on the part of the community that is the problem seem vindicated. If they obey the curfew and nothing happens tonight, then again those saying the community is to blame seem vindicated.

101 Shiplord Kirel  Aug 16, 2014 2:27:00pm

This is pathetic, even for the Daily Mail:
Mother of policeman who shot dead Michael Brown was ‘a serial con artist who defrauded thousands of dollars from neighbors in stolen credit card scheme’

Attention Daily Fail! Wilson is not responsible for his mother. He seems to have trouble enough of his own anyway.

From the news and twit reports most of the looting was where there weren’t enough locals to prevent it. Curfew midnight to 5am just seems to give the locals a break, except for those coming and going to work.

I don’t know what they plan to do if that happens. I’m sure Johnson et al are working out contingencies.

It’s a clusterfuck, I agree. What’s your proposal instead?

What Frank said. Insist any protests after midnight be quiet vigils. Put it in community terms, not making the community the problem. Respect the anger and the pain. Walk with them. Don’t confront them.

This draws a line, and says anyone out past curfew is The Problem.

Speaking for myself, if Gov. Nixon wanted to get a curfew to be accepted by the community, he should have paired that with something that the community most likely desires —- e.g., unusual state and or federal oversight of the murder investigation, rather than insisting on business as usual on that front.

Not inviting pointless confrontation and drawing a temporal line in the sand. An official curfew is patronizing, insulting and offensive as fuck. Enforcing normal noise ordinances is something the vast majority of people would find eminently understandable and reasonable.

That’s sort of gambling on there being more looting tonight, now that the curfew has been imposed. If the community obeys the curfew and the looters stay out of Ferguson, then the logical conclusion to draw is that the looters are from the local community.

Or the looters understand that they wouldn’t be able to hide behind a big crowd?

111 BishopX  Aug 16, 2014 2:38:08pm

It’s funny to think that over the last few days (since the staties showed up) the local police have been the ones living in fear. Once all their scary-long range riot gear was verboten they’re refusing to go anywhere Canfield Dr. in small numbers. Hence the non-response to the looting, and the attempt at a curfew rather than a regular patrol.

I wonder if that feeling has been an under-current of police/community relations for a long time in Ferguson, that the guns where the only things keeping the cops safe.

re: #110 Rev_Arthur_Belling

Indeed, looters have been exploiting gaps in the coverage, whether it be cops tied up in the neighborhood while looting went on elsewhere or forcing protestors to spread themselves thin covering too many stores.

If those who decide to remain out know that there’s a reasonable need to be quiet those who try to start shit and loot are not only going to stand out, but the community should be able to shame them and direct police towards the troublemakers much more effectively. Treating everyone who remains out as if they are a problem is a good way to become needlessly overwhelmed and create a riot out of a controllable situation.

I hope that after last night the police will be making more of an effort to keep outsiders from entering the area after dark. Once the curfew hits they probably wont be allowing anyone in without a verifiably valid reason period.

Still I see your point, the people inclined to think the worst of the community will not take that into account when assigning blame.

I think what has been so awful about the Michael Brown case is this:

The officer may very well have been justified. *Eyewitness reports aside for the moment.
The way this thing has been handled just reeks.
No official report of incident.
The piecemeal info.
The conflicting accounts by Ferguson police.
The timing of the release of the “robbery” video.
The heavy initial military style show of force.

All of this spurs distrust of everything. It is FUBAR.

*If the eyewitness accounts are indeed accurate, there is no justification whatsoever.

The thing is, if the evidence fit the cop’s version of events, then why spend so much time and energy concealing said evidence? Why avoid interviewing witnesses, one of the most basic post-incident procedures? Why keep the autopsy under wraps if it fits a scenario where Brown was the aggressor and the cop left with no choice but to use lethal force?

Nothing in the way the Ferguson PD has conducted itself gives me the impression that they are interested in the facts of this case coming out.

203 psddluva4evah  Aug 16, 2014 4:29:22pm

I’ve been out all day and I missed both the press conference and all the info on twitter.

From what I’ve caught up on and what I’ve read, I’m just so pissed. I’ll take the advice of the people on the ground like Alderman French and just be okay, but still. From what I could tell, basically you have the white governor, and the white head of the Highway Patrol, who both couldn’t handle their own darn constituents with any sort of understanding or consideration, so they have to get the Black guy (the awesome Capt Johnson) to speak to those people with any sort of compassion or empathy for them..

So they got him to explain to “his people” so maybe they’d take it a little better coming from “one of their own”. Capt Johnson’s body language throughout the whole press conference was uncomfortable!

Seriously though, it is a civil aviation violation the FAA has said that drones may not be used for commercial purposes.

(at least until they get around to writing regulations to deal with their use)

I am going to go with Antonio French’s wisdom about the curfew tonight. He has been there every day, doing everything right and good, and I’m sitting on my computer hundreds of miles away. I totally trust his judgment. (Not that he asked me, or needed my approval—I am just so very impressed with him on so many levels.)

And note the correct spelling on her sign!

And Mr. French is exhausted tonight.

Let’s say he did rush the officer. According to police, he was struck by bullets at 35 feet away. Witnesses say he then swung around and put his hands up. At that point, he was surrendering. Shooting him again and again was NOT necessary.

They can say all they want, what the officer did was negligent.
