Beyond my skillset. I typically only listen with one earbud (audiobooks while working/driving, need one ear free) so they’re still somewhat usable for that, but…

Third fucking pair. And I know he does this, so I’d covered them up. But he found the one wire and worked that and just fuck.

You’re right, nothing will spoil a friendly neighborhood gathering like a good rainstorm. In fact we in SE Alaska would be happy to send them some rain clouds. We’ve had over 20 INCHES of rain since the first of June!

Sorry to go off-topic so early, but let’s bet on the race of the driver, shall we?

Posted from the last thread:

One of the wheels fell off.

This happens to me all the time:

cnn.com

Granted that the driver may have been a complete nut job, but really? A three year old child is dead? You might want to direct your fire at the guy with the gun.

I guess I’ll wait on clarification, but I’ll bet on the cops blaming the death of the child being shot by her father, rather than the cops shooting the shit out of the vehicle.

I connived my way into having the same locker both junior and senior year (really nice location) and still forgot the combination multiple times.

Granted, nobody actually closed their locker door at our school.

Don’t have the Tweet handy but some of the media asked to be allowed to go where the protesters are but police said no. They’re being kept in their “free speech zone”. For a while the police had larked their armored vehicles to block reporters view. Apparently they finally moved it based on it being all over social media.

51 austin_blue  Aug 16, 2014 11:09:36pm

Government entities may make reasonable content-neutral restrictions on the time, place, and manner of a speech or assemblage, even in a traditional public forum. This action directly affects the rights of assembly, since a government entity may restrict the time and place where an assembly may take place, as well as the manner in which the assembly occurs. The restrictions must be reasonable and narrowly tailored to meet a significant government purpose. The government entity must also leave open ample channels for interested parties that wish to communicate.

I’m not sure if the actions tonight in Ferguson meet these strict limitations. The gaspers will, of course, applaud.

Smoke? Are they trying to escape from the Bismark? Police departments don’t use smoke. It obscures their fields of fire. Smoke is a defensive tool used by folks who want to withdraw from a disadvantageous battle situation.

Cops don’t use smoke. It gives them no advantage in any situation. That report is a baldfaced lie.

They’ve been getting criticized for days for their liberal use of tear gas, so I guess tonight they’ve decided to start lying that it’s “smoke” so that they can convince the press that they’re just trying to scare protestors into retreating. That that’s not tear gas they’re dumping in people’s front yards, it’s harmless “smoke” that hurts no one.

So the smoke was just a smokescreen to tell the press “Nah, it was just smoke”

91 jaunte  Aug 16, 2014 11:34:57pm

“…Many types of tear gas and other riot control agents have been produced with effects ranging from mild tearing of the eyes to immediate vomiting and prostration. CN and CS are the most widely used and known, but around 15 different types of tear gas have been developed worldwide e.g., adamsite or bromoacetone, CNB, and CNC. CS has become the most popular due to its strong effect and lack of toxicity in comparison with other similar chemical agents. The effect of CS on a person will depend on whether it is packaged as a solution or used as an aerosol. The size of solution droplets and the size of the CS particulates after evaporation are factors determining its effect on the human body.[9]

The chemical reacts with moisture on the skin and in the eyes, causing a burning sensation and the immediate forceful and uncontrollable shutting of the eyes. Effects usually include tears streaming from the eyes, profuse coughing, exceptional nasal discharge that is full of mucus, burning in the eyes, eyelids, nose and throat areas, disorientation, dizziness and restricted breathing.”

Well, that’s a plausible story. If you have the number of outsiders that Ferguson has seen every night since the shooting, you’re bound to have rival gangs running into each other. Once that started happening, it was only a matter of time before someone got shot.

Idiots handling that spent casing. Geez.

141 lawhawk  Aug 17, 2014 6:40:03am

There are multiple law enforcement agencies involved in policing in Ferguson. So it’s not surprising that depending on which police is interviewed, you’d get different answers. That isn’t just the function of a fog of the incident, but of the multiple agencies involved.

This uncertainty plays into the law enforcement hands too. They get to claim they’re not firing tear gas, it’s some other agency.

And I’d wager that the county police are the ones firing tear gas, while others are firing just smoke grenades. Based on their prior activities, this would be consistent.

Nothing that the police has done justifies the violence by rioters both to persons and property.

Nothing that the rioters have done justifies the excessive force by the police on peaceful demonstrators, let alone the journalists and those reporting on the situation like Alderman French.

Last night, one person was shot, and there were seven arrested. The person shot was not by police. The shooter is still at large. Police need to find and bring this person to justice. That’s their job.

Another incident involved someone firing on a police car. That person was also not apprehended.

Police need to find and bring that person to justice as well.

It’s not their job to be judge, jury and executioner.

That’s what happened with Mike Brown. To Officer Wilson’s knowledge (and this is based on the most current Chief Jackson statement), the only thing that Wilson knew was that Brown was walking in the street. Jaywalking - which is a quality of life crime, not a capital offense. That’s what initiated the fatal encounter.

Think about that. Jaywalking = fatal officer-involved shooting.

It goes to the nature of the police stops, and the racial disparity of the stops in Ferguson (in which blacks are much more likely to be stopped than whites, even though whites that are stopped have a much higher contraband hit rate - the MO AG statistics are unequivocal in the disparity).

One shooting and seven arrests would be a very slow night in a lot of communities. There are people in the area for whom the Michael Brown crisis is only distraction from their routine. Our joint task force flooded Homestead and Miami with police and military after Hurricane Andrew. One of the unexpected problems was that the storm and that response screwed up the ‘normal’ drug and other crime scenes.

The spice must flow.

In addition to the Sarah Palin pick, which is simply unforgivable, McCain has turned into a complete and total tool since his loss to Obama in 2008.

McCain is more irksome than most GOP tools because prior to 2008 McCain was at least occasionally capable of being useful. So McCain has deliberately embraced the dark side.

Transportation routes thru the Arctic are already negotiated, IIRC. US, Russia, China. It’s a major Paradigm shift, that the players are well aware of climate change. They are denying it for propaganda purposes. Keep the little people confused —create chaos —profit from it.

As much as YEC drives climate denial, the profit in climate denial is paying the freight for the spread of YEC. A neat feedback loop, there.

re: #202 Dark_Falcon

That’s not really true either, since the US-Soviet antagonism was not a major factor in the various 1960’s race riots. The USSR gloated about them, to be sure, but no one serious has ever suggested it played a role starting them (Birchers are not serious for purposes of this post).

DF, the Cold War describes a period of time (among other things) from the End of WWII to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. While there may be those who dispute this specific time period, this is what is true to in public mind.

So, from WWII to the CRA and 1960’s riots, my reference to Cold War Culture and fear rhetoric was an attempt to call to mind a whole host of images and memories from that time period. Hopefully to better communicate to the reader my feelings of Deja Vu regarding the current eruption of racial tensions in this country.

I was trying to highlight how the rhetoric doesn’t work this time around. As the public mind has two generations of experience with non-white people who have taken advantage of the opportunities afforded by the CRA.

*sigh*

Why do you guys hate John McCain so much? And don’t bring up Sarah Palin: That was 6 years ago and he couldn’t have known how destructive she’d turn out to be.

He’s a dishonest, mean little prick (and he was long before Sarah Palin)

rollingstone.com

This is the story of the real John McCain, the one who has been hiding in plain sight. It is the story of a man who has consistently put his own advancement above all else, a man willing to say and do anything to achieve his ultimate ambition: to become commander in chief, ascending to the one position that would finally enable him to outrank his four-star father and grandfather.

re: #224 EPR-radar

Even that won’t make an impression. We are talking about ideologues that typically embrace young earth creationism, after all.

Oh, that will make an impression, trust me.
You know, the methane clathrate deposits usually are sandwiched between the silt on the floor of the continental shelves, and the areas which are most vulnerable to pop are those at the slopes of the continental shelves.
When the methane in the clathrates is realeased, the structure collapses, and if a structure collapses at a slope, what is more than likely to happen?
An underwater landslide.
Nothing like a tsunami with minutes to no warning to grab peoples attention…
Especially if it happens repeatedly, which is likely because clathrates are notoriously pressure and temperature sensitive (it’s one of the main reasons they haven’t been utilized more for energy).
Cascading clathrate deposit pops wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Being completely and spectacularly wrong is business as usual for these people.

Until they are so wrong that so many get hurt that anything they have claimed or done will be called into question and calls for justice will become louder.

The leadership usually knows better, but is well paid to keep the rubes in line, and that will doubtless continue.

I think that actually will become their undoing, because once the feces begins to impact the air distribution apparatus, a closer examination of their activities will be done, which will deny them the ability to have been unknowing about the reality of climate change.

Two observations before I leave:

1. The big change for Republicans was a 6 point decline in “Supreme Being Guided”, all of which seems to have gone to “Humans have existed in present form”. This could represent simply the falling away from Intelligent Design theories.

2. Identification with both parties takes a major hit between 2009 and 2013. Though the 2013 survey spoke to 18 few people, 95 more people considered themselves to be “Independant” in 2013 as opposed to 2009.

If we’d been talking a black farmer, the BLM wouldn’t have waited years to respond to his refusal to get his cattle off public land. And they certainly would not have given him days to amass a militia to hold them off. All we need to know that’s a fact is to look at minority farmers out west who got the government boot in the ass without any fuss from the media.

I think Antonio French has been a great witness to everything that has gone on in Ferguson, and following his tweets last night, I got the feeling that there were some bad actors stirring things up after the curfew. From his late-night tweets:

“Too many young men talking about they’re ready to die tonight.”

“I can tell you firsthand that some of the people that remained tonight were armed. Were ready for a fight. And wanted to injure police.”

I’m still not sure how I fee about the curfew, but I will give some credence to the thought that part of the reason for it is to get the real protesters safely off the streets so they don’t give cover/get caught in crossfire with the bad actors who are there to cause trouble.
