Here’s an open thread to follow what’s going on tonight in Ferguson, Missouri, with a fervent hope that peace will be restored.

But you can almost smell Jim Hoft’s eagerness for more violence in #Ferguson. The right wing blogosphere has been disgusting beyond belief today, validating once again my decision to run screaming away from them years ago.

Today was no exception.

Photography is not a crime. Reporting is not a crime.

The police in Ferguson are treating both as such.

Last March, a Euharlee Georgia ROTC cadet was gunned down in his doorway when he opened the door. The person who knocked was a female cop looking for his dad. The cadet was holding a Wii remote that he had just been using to watch a movie.

They changed the school year here to have a 2-week break in the fall, another 2-week break at Christmas, and another 2-week break in the Spring.
Then there are the “snow days” that are built-in.
So, school starts in early August and, if extra snow days don’t have to be made up, the kids get out at end of May (before Memorial Day weekend).

Hmm, I just spent the past hour & a half or so googling, trying to figure out the shirt & pants colors and arm patch emblems for all the police uniforms we’ve been hearing about because it’s really hard to tell one from the other.

So here’s what I got:

St. Louis County PD - Light brown or white shirt (white may be for higher rank); brown pants with light brown vertical stripe on sides; SWAT team gets decked out in cyborg-like military gear or camouflage; they are by far the most aggressive looking ones—see Google Images for uniforms:

The Super Power building was actually new construction, started circa 1998. In the meantime, Scientology itself has shrunk considerably and a lot of old timers have split. Plus Scientology is now the butt of late night comedians’ jokes.

Someone just got shot, according to CNN - still needs to be confirmed. Police surrounded the car with guns drawn.

CNN - police just reacting on a hair-trigger, with overwhelming force. It’s really interesting to hear their harsh criticism of the police.

Jake Tapper - some demonstrators were putting barriers in the road, a young demonstrator held a sign telling the police not to enter, someone threw a bottle, and then the police fired stun grenades and tear-gas.

I don’t know if I see an exit strategy here. I don’t know how either the protesters or the cops will back down in the next few days. I imagine that eventually someone will — probably the responsible protesters (i.e. the non-looters) and the press — but it seems to me the police will simply then move in and clear out the stragglers once nobody is looking.

I dislike that analysis of the situation, although I’ve seen it multiple times before.

What people aren’t saying (but some of them probably do understand) is that this isn’t just about one man who shot one kid, it’s about an entire system that devalues black lives and which is violently enforced by the police.

That’s the reason that the police are overreacting here — they KNOW what it’s about, it’s bigger than just Brown and Wilson. It’s about all of them, every crooked or not-crooked-but-looking-the-other-way one of them, and if Wilson goes on trial then the whole system does. And they can’t allow that.

But has anyone ever been killed by a water cannon? Two kids in Turkey (12 and 15) have been killed by teargas canisters fired into protesting crowds, within the last couple years. The 15 year old was in a coma for 6-12 months before dying.

They shouldn’t be using any of these, but I do wonder if water cannon would be safer. Lord knows it’d be quieter than the LRAD.

I should note in advance that this is more of a clinical comment with an observer’s distance than what my feelings of the actions on the ground actually are.

To assume that what has happened is 100% under Johnson’s control is to assume that all the intel he is getting from forces under his control is accurate, and that all the people reporting to him are ones who want to see a peaceful end to the confrontation, instead of recovering some image from the black eye they have received in the media.

All it would take is even just one unit reporting false intelligence, backed up from silence from others, for Capt. Johnson to be put in a position where the rules of engagement (because there are rules, even if we are unaware of what they are) dictate that he must allow the police to respond to with force, even if that force is non-lethal. It doesn’t mean those reports are accurate, but I’m pretty sure that the rules dictate that in situations where the outcome is uncertain the balance must come down on the side of preserving officers’ lives.

And now he’s in a situation where some of the people he is commanding probably resent the fact that he has been elevated to a command position, where their previous behavior has been described as inevitable. Maybe some of them want to play with the toys. Maybe some of them are racist. Maybe some of it is just the “us versus them” mentality that I’m pretty sure most cops struggle with from time to time. Who knows? All we can see are the results, which is that this a giant fucking clusterfuck and it really will take, I believe, removing the currently involved police departments from the ground and allowing them time to cool tempers.

Smoke cannisters are designed to heat up significantly once fired to prevent people from just picking them back up. You only have a safety window of a couple seconds after they fire or risk serious burns

So far I have yet to see one picture of a thrown molotov exploding into flames. Even with all the cameras there and the thousands of images from Ferguson I have seen. Have I just missed them all?

Starting government press conferences with sectarian prayers is not only horribly offensive and blatant pandering, it’s also among the least of their multiple offenses against the Constitution and common decency.

The ACLU has their hands full with the more pressing matters which means they won’t get called out on this, which means they will continue to do it, which means it will become de facto standard for police trying to cloak themselves in religion in the future.

Despicable.

Again, all of it doesn’t matter as far as the perspectives of a court case are concerned (as long as the decision is out of their hands, e.g. if it’s decided by a SP). Whether the witnesses were influenced is for a jury to decide.

If that doesn’t highlight the disconnect between law enforcement and community, the black/white racial divide, and tensions that continue to be intensified due to heavy handed police tactics, you haven’t been paying attention.

When former NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly calls you out for heavy handed tactics, you’ve gone too far. Kelly initiated stop and frisk, oversaw a department that had more than its share of officer-involved shootings, including Sean Bell, and yet the city isn’t a powder-keg of racial violence ready to go off at any moment. Part of that is because the Department is more proactive in getting information out to the public, is more responsive than it has been to these incidents, and has been held accountable by courts and prosecutors. It isn’t perfect, but it’s a whole lot better than the system in place in Missouri.

Right now, the best bet for a prosecution is a civil rights action against Wilson and the Ferguson PD for violating the rights of Mike Brown. And that’s not a sure thing either. It’s a whole lot tougher than trying to prove homicide (murder 2, manslaughter, etc.) by a cop because of the leniency cops have in carrying out their duties and responsibilities. Add to that a local prosecutor who all but looks the other way when police are accused of wrong doing, and you’ve got a stacked deck against Ferguson getting the justice they seek and deserve.

The response to protests was to break out the military gear. That only added to the list of grievances by residents against a police force stonewalling against releasing even basic details of the shooting and the officer involved.

Today is both S-L-O-W and interesting at work. Since this is basically a call center, folks are split into teams. Last week I was on a team with two other people. They’re both gone now, since they both got new jobs, and I have a lot to think about.

On the one hand, they need me to keep this CRM campaign going since they don’t have anyone else selling it right now. I just got every contact and every lead from the two people who left, including some leads that were starting to develop into potentials. The company are also starting to do what should have been done months before I ever got here — namely, focusing their efforts and getting a better sense of the client demographics for the CRM company and best target industries to go for. I got an info dump yesterday of a bunch of documents and videos and client lists from my boss for me to read and I’ve got a training meeting today and some strategy sessions to figure out the next moves.

OTOH, they don’t pay me enough for this shit. The base pay is hourly and works out to barely 2/3 of what I’d earned in base pay at my previous gig. There are no commissions, just performance bonuses. There is no overtime. They will only pay for 40 hours a week, so anything I do outside of that would be free. Coming up with a comprehensive strategy and game plan to really get this campaign going would take longer than 40 hours a week, especially since I’d also have to balance making whatever insane number of calls they want me to make in a day.

Basically they expect miracles but they don’t want to pay for them. Blah.

Breitbart News reporter Kerry Picket was arrested late Monday afternoon by a Missouri State Trooper and released several hours later with an apology from the arresting officer and his lieutenant.
The State Trooper initially said that Breitbart News, a credentialed media outlet, could not walk directly to a media staging area on West Florissant Avenue and would have to take a detour.

However, a detour did not exist for pedestrians. As Picket began to walk toward the staging being blocked by the Trooper, she was handcuffed with plastic-ties, with my hands behind her back and told to get on her knees.

Picket was later searched and had to give up my belongings from her person. Picket was hauled off in a St. Louis County Police Truck and was on the verge of being booked.

Picket was released when it was discovered that the trooper misunderstood directions from his superiors and was told to not allow vehicle traffic through but to allow foot traffic through. Both the arresting officer and his lieutenant apologized to Picket, who was then released.

So, let’s break this down to component parts.

A credentialed journalist (from Breitbart) tries to cover the report and follows the official directions.

Officers don’t follow the very directions that were given to journalists, and arrest/detain the reporter.

Only after a couple of hours, the reporter was released with apologies.

Let that sink in.

You’ve got a police force (comprised of multiple units from multiple departments) engaging in policing a civil disturbance, and they’re not even consistent on what they’re doing. They’re arresting reporters who are complying with the law enforcement rules, which are already onerous, all while continuing to crack down violently on protesters some of whom are coming from outside Ferguson like moths to the flame to pour gasoline on an already volatile situation.

If the police can’t even get this part right, now imagine what the community thinks of a police investigation into one of their own killing an unarmed black guy. If you were wondering why the violence keeps getting ratcheted up every time the county police come calling with their armored vehicles, there you go.

This is a police force that is out of control, and can’t even follow the rules that they initiated.

So, when you wonder why there’s a curfew, pre-curfew, double-secret curfew, and no one knows what’s going on or why the police are running through the streets with their armored vehicles to disrupt the protests, there you go.

It’s a clusterfuck, courtesy of an out-of-control police force.

And that the unrest that followed was just endemic to the black community, which is always looking for an excuse to grow violent and unruly.

There is no reasoning with these people, we can only hope to limit the amount of damage they can do.
