Jim Hoft’s Unsourced Claim That Officer Darren Wilson Had an “Orbital Blowout Fracture of the Eye Socket”

A few problems in the dumbest man on the Internet’s narrative
Wingnuts • Views: 303,667

The entire right wing universe (including Drudge Report) is now screaming about this post by, yes, the Dumbest Man on the Internet again, claiming that anonymous sources told him officer Darren Wilson suffered an “orbital blowout fracture to the eye socket” in a struggle with unarmed teenager Michael Brown: BREAKING REPORT: Officer Darren Wilson Suffered “Orbital Blowout Fracture to Eye Socket” During Mike Brown Attack | the Gateway Pundit.

It’s possible that someone did leak this information to Hoft, but I’ll remind my readers that Jim Hoft is probably the single most dishonest right wing blogger on the Internet as well as the dumbest, with a very long history of distorting facts and completely making stuff up to push his far right, often overtly racist agenda.

And there are some things to consider about Hoft’s claims this time as well, before lending them credibility they probably don’t deserve.

Here are the symptoms of an orbital blowout fracture:

The most common symptoms are bruising, tenderness and swelling around the eye; redness of the eye; double vision, ordiplopia (seeing two images at the same time); numbness of the cheek, nose or teeth; nose bleeds (epistaxis) [See figure 1].

Symptoms that typically indicate a more serious injury are pain on eye movement, double vision, air under the skin around the eye, and numbness of the cheek/mouth/nose on the side of the injury. Severe trauma may cause facial bone fractures, injury to the eye itself, and injuries to the skull/brain.

In the video taken by an eyewitness immediately after the shooting, officer Darren Wilson is seen walking calmly around the body with no signs of discomfort or injury, even though by this time he would have been in very serious pain.

YouTube

Also, no ambulance was called for Wilson, and no first aid was administered by other officers, which seems odd if he had indeed suffered this type of serious injury — or any injury at all.

And there’s more evidence that Hoft is trying to pull a fast one again; here is the original image posted at the AAPOS site, showing a CT scan of a blowout fracture (on the left), compared to the image posted at Gateway Pundit by Hoft (on the right):

Original example CT scan (L), compared to altered image posted by Jim Hoft (R)

Notice the difference? In the version posted by Jim Hoft, the text at bottom right that says “UNIV OF IOWA” has been crudely erased. Caught you, Jim.

Was Hoft trying to mislead his readers into thinking this was the actual X-ray (or CT scan) of Darren Wilson? His text does not make it clear it wasn’t Wilson’s CT scan — and the words “UNIV OF IOWA” have been blacked out, quite deliberately.

If Hoft’s intent was to mislead, it worked. All over Twitter and right wing blogs, the wingnuts are raving about “Darren Wilson’s X-ray” that shows a fractured eye socket — but this is just a generic example image of an unknown person’s CT scan.

Time will tell if Wilson is going to claim he had this type of injury, but nobody should take Jim Hoft’s word for it.

And one more point while I’m at it; Hoft writes:

This comes from a source within the Prosecuting Attorney’s office and confirmed by the St. Louis County Police.

If that’s true, it’s highly disturbing that the St. Louis prosecutor’s office and the St. Louis County police department are leaking information to a far right hateblogger known for his unrelenting dishonesty, who uses a white supremacist hate group as a source.

It’s not just this leak — it’s the whole incredibly unprofessional drip, drip, drip from the police department of information that would seem to exonerate the officer or somehow justify shooting an unarmed man. It not only keeps the story going, especially for those on the right, it continually angers those who had supported Brown’s right not to be executed.

An absolutely terrible way for “law enforcement” to act, blatantly building their own case to the court of public opinion in the most manipulative way.

I find it strange that Wilson has broken his silence and is sending texts to his good friend Jake Shepard and none of the texts mention an orbital blowout fracture of the eye socket. In the texts, Wilson seems most concerned with his and his son’s safety. Shepard expressed his support for Wilson in a CNN appearance.

“The first text that Wilson sent to Shepard was on Friday after he spoke to CNN in a brief interview.”

“It read: ”Thanks buddy I wasn’t expecting that”. Shepard replied: ”No problem buddy, you deserve it.”

“Wilson replied: ”It means a lot thank you.”’

“The two then texted over the weekend and Darren explained that he cannot go out in public and that anyone wanting to reach him should leave their messages with the Ferguson police department.”

“On Monday Wilson texted: ‘The support is really keeping me going during this stressful time. Just stay safe. I appreciate all you have done’.”

Yes, but if you ask them if their actions are f*cking with the rule of law, they’ll say no and get angry that you asked them about it. In their minds, they’re just protecting one of their own and anything they can do to take the heat off of him is justified. Imo, if anyone is politicizing and racializing Michael Brown’s death, it’s Hoft and the rest of Mouthbreathers, Inc. A young guy was killed by police in Salt Lake City recently, but he’s of no concern to them, yet, they’re among the first to ask why some of us don’t get upset when a young white male is killed by police. There have been protests in SLC in regard to Dillon Taylor and Michael Brown’s deaths. We are concerned about any police officer gunning anyone down in the streets of America, but they will never admit it. Their primary concern seems to be to politicize these kinds of incidents and inject racism into them if/when anyone expresses an opinion other than the one they support. They’ve been very busy calling President Obama, AG Holder, Sharpton and Jackson, Sr. ‘race hustlers’ because they give a damn about our increasingly militarized police forces.

This is great, mike brown, the 6’4” 300 lb. bully that the CNN crowd just adores is coming off more and more as a typical urban thug. I said this when this story broke last week, what person believed a police officer just executed a black man for walking in the street? I don’t know if I should keep laughing or start crying for the direction our country has gone.

Frankly it’s highly disturbing that such a methodical procedure as an autopsy can be contorted to say that wounds might indicate that what “witnesses” said about Brown’s “hands being up” was correct. …when the 2 autopsies already conducted only indicate that he was shot from the front with his hands down. What does this mean for Officer Wilson come that federal autopsy? God it’s frustrating. ..they’re going to sacrifice our brother for the sake of politics….

This just reported,

Local St. Louis sources said Wilson suffered an “orbital blowout fracture to the eye socket.” This comes from a source within the Prosecuting Attorney’s office and confirmed by the St. Louis County Police.
Officer Darren Wilson suffered facial fractures during his confrontation with deceased 18 year-old Michael Brown. Officer Wilson clearly feared for his life during the incident that led to the shooting death of Brown. This was after Michael Brown and his accomplice Dorian Johnson robbed a local Ferguson convenience store.

I don’t think Captain Johnson should be praised for anything. He made inflammatory statements from the begining, made promises that he didn’t keep and should have never made (no armored vehicles, no arrests, no riot police, when things go bad we’re going to talk it out, etc), threw the officer involved in the shooting under the bus, threw cops in general under the bus, gave some ridiculous sermon where he inferred that his black son who dresses like a gang member was somehow in as much danger from the police as every other black youth, and blamed ensuing riots on the Ferguson chief releasing the video of Brown committing a robbery minutes before the shooting. As a police official, he failed by allowing his personal feelings/interests, biases and prejudices to interfere with how he communicated and made decisions. It all bit him in the ass and now he wants to start recognizing the hard work of the police officers who are working under his command. Obviously, everyone has the right to their opinion but please don’t be fooled by this apparent change in demeanor. He knows he needs everyone of those machine gun carrying cops and everyone of those armored vehicles to have his back. He sold out his oath and his loyalty to his cops and cops from surrounding agencies to curry favor with a bunch of thugs and community activist agitators, thinking they’d have his back. Now, he realizes he got sold out and he wants to come back home. Fuck that!

Hmmm…seems to me the soft approach has failed….several nights now in fact! I seem to remember during the Los Angeles riots in the 1990’s we had officers/deputies riding in squad cars 4 deep, with the back doors cracked open so everyone could get out of the car dynamically, and with a curfew in place, NO ONE WAS ALLOWED ON THE STREETS after curfew…NO ONE. So, that alleviates the issues with..
1. gunman
2. looters
3. Molotov cocktail throwers
4.. idiots standing around waiting to be led (stupid idiots are easily led, just need the right angry moron to stand up and say “let’s do XYZ”!)
5. morons standing around whining about getting tear gassed when they could JUST GO HOME FOR THE NIGHT. They’ve had ALL DAY for “peaceful protests”. EVERYONE knows the only protests that happen at night are NEVER peaceful…too many stats to back that one up!
6. any other morons too stupid to go home who insist they should be allowed to stand around and watch.

Let the NG clear the streets at curfew of EVERYONE. Mamby pamby handling of these “citizens” has gotten almost 2 weeks of this crapola with no end in sight. How many more officers need to get hurt? Frickin libiturd pacifist moron leadership has extended this nonsense out of sheer political correctness. Stay safe my brothers and sisters! Don’t get hurt because decisive leadership is lacking.

This x100.

What is certain in this case is not the details of the shooting —- it is the relentless and consistent effort by Ferguson PD to obstruct justice and make a just trial difficult or impossible.

These efforts by the Ferguson PD to screw things up have extended to taking actions (e.g., overly militarized responses to largely peaceful protests) that amount to inciting riots.

So we have the spectacle of a police department that would rather incite riots than do its job solely because doing its job might jeopardize one of their own.

If Darren Wilson had sustained an orbital blowout fracture, he would have looked like he’d gone a few rounds with an MMA fighter. His face would have been heavily bruised. He would’ve burst some blood vessels in his eye, making it bright red. His eye would’ve been swollen shut. He would’ve been dazed and disoriented.

re: #63 EPR-radar

Most commenters there apparently want to be Chief Kessler when they grow up.

What I found to be gob smacking unbelievable was that there were officers at Policeone willing to defend the disgusting South Carolina deputy who drunkenly assaulted and handcuffed a female soldier near FT Jackson after she rebuffed his advances (all on film) last October.

Others did call out the deputy, but most tried to denigrate the charcter of a female soldier who wanted to have dinner in peace and not be mauled by a drunk asshole.

“It read: “Thanks buddy I wasn’t expecting that”. Shepard replied: “No problem buddy, you deserve it.”

“Wilson replied: “It means a lot thank you.”’

I don’t think Wilson got hurt but he also likely didn’t start this dumb-ass rumor. I’d not be surprised to see that Dim Jim made it up out of whole cloth.

A good thing.

I just hope the people are realizing their real fight is in the political arena and as citizens they need to go out and work to get some control of their elected officials so they can work to get better things for their community. Like a police force that represents them for starters.

Indeed. Whatever the ‘Islamic State’ (ISIL) says it is, it is not a recognized government. Thus its non-combat killings of people are murder, not executions.

Execution is what the Iraqi government is going to do to most of the ISIL leaders or torturers it may capture. Only it’ll use a gallows and a properly measured drop for normally-immediately killing and far less gresome method of death.

Other Republicans lost in Illinois in 2012 because of gerrymandering (some of those loses will be put right this year, I assure you), but Walsh lost because he’s an asshole. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Training Academies, in 2002 there were 626 state and local law enforcement academies operating in the United States offering basic law enforcement training to individuals recruited or seeking to become law enforcement officers. These include

274 county, regional, or state academies;
249 college, university, or technical school academies; and
103 city or municipal academies.

According to BJS, the median duration of basic recruit training - excluding any field training component - was 18 weeks across all academies with a range anywhere from four weeks to six months. The average class size among all academies ranged from 21 to 32 recruits with larger academies generally having larger class sizes.

I believe almost every living ex-gov in IL is in prison. (I’m from IL. Grew up near DF, just left 3 years ago.) I just can’t imagine a GOP Gov now. They’re all completely nukkin futs. Because that’s what the baggers want. And as fucked up as our state politics is, a GOP Gov would be 1000x worse.

By the way honest question DF, what makes you think that the Illinois GOP isn’t through nominating people like Joe Walsh? Really party label aside. What gives you honest hope that these guys that are running this year aren’t jerks like Walsh? And again I hate to sound patronizing but the Democrats aren’t the only crooks in your state. Your last governor before Blago was a Republican and he’s a convicted felon. You can’t always talk about the crooked Illinois Democratic Machine when your state GOP produced George Ryan. Not a defense of the Illinois Dems but it’s dishonest of you to act like the Illinois GOP is some exemplifier of ethical values and the Illinois Dems are lacking it.Plus as discussed, your party hasn’t proven itself to be fiscal conservative.

And the reason I gave DF’s post the response he got is in part because I have asked him the questions like these before and never gotten an answer.

Ever.

Um, DF….if you haven’t noticed, but the Democrats have been the party of fiscal responsibility for some decades now.

Getting finances under control is a DEMOCRATIC hallmark. See California.

Can’t find the source right now, but it bears repeating:

Every Democratic President since Eisenhower has left office with a smaller deficit than he inherited.

Every Republican President has left office with a larger deficit.

Every Democratic President (except Carter) since Eisenhower has left office with a smaller unemployment rate than when he took office.

Every Republican President (except Reagan) since Eisenhower has left office with a higher unemployment rate than when he took office.

Results. They matter.

[Embedded content]

I was unfamiliar with that controversy of the day, so I google Harold Greene’s name looking for news coverage and WTF the Washington Examiner is calling bullshit on the RWNJs?

I was wrong. It turns out Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel did, in fact, attend the Greene funeral, a fact I should have known. Before sending out the tweet, I made a couple of perfunctory checks to see whether Hagel had attended, didn’t see him in the news coverage I read and passed on the information without further checking. If I had looked into it just a bit more, I would have seen, for example, a Stars & Stripes article that specifically mentioned Hagel’s presence. Once I saw that, I sent out two tweets correcting the mistake. (As for Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, it was true that neither had attended.)

The Davis tweet was another matter altogether. I did not pass it on, but it was included in the Legal Insurrection post to which I had linked. Davis stated definitively that Nixon had attended the Dillard funeral in 1970 and Bush had attended the Maude funeral in 2001, a “tradition” of presidential attendance that Obama “bucked” by ignoring the Greene funeral. As it turned out, none of that was true, and Davis, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who played an important role in the War on Terror and who today teaches law at Howard University, knew it when he wrote it.

Curious about what Davis had said, I looked for any sign that Nixon had attended the Dillard funeral. I went to the Nixon Library website, which has posted the minute-by-minute White House logs of Nixon’s activities. They’re very detailed; if Nixon had gone to the general’s funeral, it would have been listed. I looked through the month after Dillard’s death and found no evidence Nixon had attended. Likewise, it turned out Bush did not attend the Maude funeral.

washingtonexaminer.com
If Obama or Biden had gone, the RWNJs would be bitching that he was using the family as “shield” or that it interfered with the family’s mourning, etc., etc. ad nauseum.

cbsnews.com

The deputies on scene apparently were confused when they saw Winkler “lunging at the back of the fleeing victim,” LASD Chief Bill McSweeney told CBS Los Angeles.

Deputies shot Winkler four times and the other man was shot once. Winkler died from his injuries at a hospital. The other man survived.

(snip)

At some point, Winkler and the victim who had been stabbed managed to escape, only to be shot when they exited the building.

5 shots towards two men, one of which they thought was a victim, and the other a melee combattant. Why didn’t these cops deputies have tazers instead of guns?

Ethan Couch, who was famously let off from murder charges with a light sentence after pleading “affluenza,” may have gotten more than a debilitating case of privilege from his family: he may have gotten the criminality from them, too.

Couch’s father Fred was arrested in Fort Worth, TX Tuesday for impersonating a police officer. re: #351 BustersView

The junk is that Gateway has stealth edited the story numerous times as noted by Franklin above. Hoft posted unsubstantiated claims about a blowout fracture that are not corroborated by any other news outlet anywhere.

Those outlets that are reporting this story are only repeating what Hoft posted. They haven’t independently confirmed anything.

That’s newsworthy in its own right.

Hoft’s readers are reflexively reposting and spreading this story across the web, seeing it make its way to Drudge, the Post, and other outlets without any independent confirmation.

That’s a blowout of a different sort.

Hoft is engaging in a malicious smear designed to give Wilson the reason to shoot and kill Brown - that he feared for his life, and that he suffered a serious injury.

It’s all meant to undermine the fact that Brown was unarmed and killed by Wilson and all the other witnesses who have come forward state that Brown was surrendering all while Wilson fired on him, including the fatal shot.

Morning all.

Going to be interesting day in Missouri as Attorney General Holder arrives to talk with the people of Ferguson and to kick off the Federal investigation into the Michael Brown shooting.

That means the RWNJs will be going crazy saying he is interfering, grandstanding, turning it racial…all of their usual crap.

If Dark happens to be around reading, I’d like to ask him if his hope for a Republican to fix the state budget means forcing the small county and city governments to pick up the slack or suffer the consequences of losing state monies?

Seems most states that have a tax-lowering, budget-balancing Republican savior is finding out the hard way that smaller governments are taking a beating to make the Governator’s books look good. Or, you have the Kansas phenom Gov. Sam Brownback’s cut, cut, cut and cut your knees off in the meantime.

Maybe Dark could provide an example of how this budget magic will work?

Okay everyone…get your ‘winger media Eric Holder hating helmets on. There is going to be shrapnel.

And the lack of a police report documenting the injury, and the lack of a report of an ambulance getting rolled to the scene. And that the cops don’t seem to be even administering first aid (barring the possibility that Ferguson police officers are particularly skilled in long-range psychic surgery and are, in fact, practicing this on their fellow officer in the photos that show them with their back to their supposedly wounded comrade).

But yes, no evidence. None at all.

Do feel free to continue your calls to ignore the shooting of a citizen in the street by one of that citizen’s sworn protectors. I’m totally sure the department’s rubber “good shoot” stamp internal review process will ensure justice.

Republicans fantasize about having the Brownback situation, where there is no opposition and they can cut without mercy…but when it happens, as it has in Kansas, and they see just how dreadful their policies are, they start crying, “Save us from ourselves!” and are now backing a Democrat to replace Brownback.

They’re much more effective as a minority party getting concessions from a Democratic (and reasonable) majority. They should embrace that reality.

I’m shocked. Shocked, that the percentages of people moving out of NY has remained relatively stable since the mid 1970s, when there was a sharp uptick (likely timed with the NYC and NYS fiscal crisis). That’s despite the claims that NY has become a tax burden to everyone and people are moving away in droves that are repeated ad nauseum.

Turns out that the uptick are to places that are a lot warmer, like Florida or Arizona and California, but every state has seen outflows increase over the years as we’ve become more mobile as a society. Even Texas has seen an uptick, as 91% of people stayed in the state in 1900 but it’s down to 82% in the most recent year. NY went from 79% to 61%, so there’s much more movement away. Florida went from 90% to 74%. Louisiana went from 90% to 71%. Oklahoma went from 85% to 65%.

Bucking the move away trend? Nevada. Nevada has seen an increase from 52 to 65%.

I believe it. The fact of the matter is “fiscal responsibility” in a Republican’s eyes is “cut social programs but don’t consider raising taxes because our wealthy donors will have a sad and don’t touch the defense budget even though we spend much more on defense than the social programs we claim caused the deficit.” Frankly, the tax and spend Democrat is a myth concievied by a party that lost the fiscal conservative debate years ago. Ironically the most fiscally conservative Republicans were ones like Ike and Ford who are now seen as RINOs. They also consequently would have never been beholden to a stupid no taxes pledge because they and their advisers understood economic reality. Today’s Republicans OTOH just think they can cut taxes for the very wealthy and cut social programs and that’s a good model for an economy.

A mindset that is quite similar to those of the very police that are at the heart of the Brown shooting - both the STL county police and FPD officers have considered the communities they police to be non-human, and dehumanize them at most every opportunity - from the racial disparity in police stops to the use of excessive force to how they responded to peaceful protests with overwhelming force.

Not surprising. Not shocking.

It’s no wonder that his followers/commenters are grasping at every straw(man) and every smear that somehow explains away Wilson’s shooting of an unarmed black man.

You have to wonder if Hoft will next try to claim that Brown tried (and failed) to use the 5 point palm exploding heart technique on Wilson, and that’s why Wilson shot him dead.

- “Josie” contradicts several eyewitnesses, citing stuff she heard from Wilson’s wife, and instantly becomes considered a credible “witness.”

- Byers tweets that anonymous source within FPD says “more than a dozen” witnesses corroborate Wilson’s version of events.

- FPD releases “robbery” video, then immediately says it has nothing to do with the shooting despite it fitting “thug” narrative.

- And now, anonymous source within county prosecutor’s office says Wilson suffered an orbital blowout fracture of his eyesocket.

Anyone noticing a trend?

Coz that’s how they roll.

Well, we have Godwins and Gish Gallops, so maybe we need a Cheney Facts convention/tactic.

That would be the way Cheney got the yellow cake Iraq making nukes lie out to a sympathetic journalist who then reported it as an fact from an unnamed source (Cheney) and then published in the N.Y. Times, whereupon Cheney went on Meet The press and said “it has been reported” that Iraq had the stuff to make nukes.

I honestly think that racism is secondary (and for a percentage of GOPers). The #1 issue is Democrat. And no matter the Dem, it would be the same thing, only with less racism or sexism. Limbaugh wouldn’t change. Fox wouldn’t change. Levin, Beck, et al, wouldn’t change. They would just have on less thing to bitch about (race or sex). The Democrat part would remain the same as would all the outrage.

Baloney. The Dems will be the death of this state if they aren’t reigned in and them losing the governorship will be a good start on getting Illinois’ finances back under control.

Late hit on a dead thread, but I can’t resist.

The threat of losing to Republicans is useful to keep arrogant/corrupt Democrats in line. I have no illusions as to how one-party rule usually works out at the state and local level.

However, Republicans are simply incapable of governance. If a Republican officeholder is not obliged to pander to hateful elements of the GOP base, then he or she will be obliged to engage in big-business friendship exercises that, when legal, are usually just corruption made legal.

Sidebar on Sub-Orbital Fractures:
My 17 year old had that exact injury on Saturday. Riding in the back of an atv (no helmet), the driver turned sharply and the whole thing rolled over. My son flew through the air and hit a guard rail.

His face was cut a bit, red and a little swollen, but the ER was about to release him, thinking there was no need for a CT. He then blew his nose and the left side of his face literally inflated like a balloon. Then a CT and confirmation of a blown orbital.

Wilson, like my son, could have hung around the scene for quite some time before the fracture fully presented itself. Who knows?

What you DID insert yourself into was a conversation about Jim Hoft. His name is in the title of this article. There is a link to his blog in the article. His name is mentioned several times. Why? Because he made up a bogus story about an eye injury. You show up and defend the story. What are we supposed to think?

You know what? You’re right. I was rude and a little pissed off when I dropped the “homogeneous circle jerk” term on the thread. Sorry about that. (I’ve been wanting to use it for awhile ;) Anyway, I had spent 5 hours at the Emergency Room Saturday night and had some insight on how the injury sets up. My son, who had been in an ATV that rolled, had called me right afterwards and we had driven him to the ER ourselves. He had a headache and some blurred vision in that eye, but he was functioning. Once he blew his nose, however, and the left side of his face inflated like a balloon, they did a CT and found the fracture.

I have no idea if Wilson had the same fracture (or any fracture). I was just trying to shed more light on what an orbital blowout was like.

So, sorry about the comment.
