Did Michael Brown’s Friend Dorian Johnson “Recant” His Story? No, He Did Not

Another lie circulated by the right
US News • Views: 53,626

A rumor began circulating through the third-string wingnut blogs two days ago that Michael Brown’s friend Dorian Johnson, who was with Brown when he was gunned down by officer Darren Wilson, had “recanted” his account of the events and admitted Brown did attack Wilson in his police car.

Before this bogus rumor ends up on Gateway Pundit, as so many bogus rumors do, here’s a definitive refutation posted tonight on Twitter by Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery, citing Johnson’s attorney:

It still may end up being touted as fact in the right wing blogosphere because that’s how they roll, but here’s the truth, for the record.

Yeah. The truth really doesn’t matter to those people.

2 Shvaughn  Aug 21, 2014 1:17:29am

Again, the question is, if this is how they treat the media when the cameras are rolling and the nation (or even the world) is watching, how do they treat black people all the time when there are no cameras?

Police could have issued a full and comprehensive report of the incident, but they had no interest in letting the facts get out, they just want a trickle of information/disinformation that will keep such a buzz around the hornet’s nest that nobody can get close to finding out what actually happened.

I am not interested in any speculation beyond what is known and confirmed about the incident: a policeman shot an unarmed young man at least six times.

I found an article there, and it described a “CT” that Brown didn’t steal the cigars. As an example, they linked to Lew Rockwell’s site, where a blogger cast doubt on the theft. I found it interesting, because usually I expect the Rockwellites to follow the “racialist” vector.

I follow several arts and crafts pages on facebook. Early this morning after everyone was asleep (of course) someone hit up one of them with links to conservative tree house because the woman who runs that page had linked to something in support of the people of Ferguson. Using words like “thug”, “criminal” and “animal”. The page owner hasn’t seen it yet, but seriously? You have to shit on a craft/decorating page?

It’s happened before this mess too. On quilting and sewing pages, leaving links to some nonsense from the usual suspects. FFS, there’s no escaping this shit. It’s CRAFTING and SEWING .I’ve had to unfollow at least a dozen “friends” and other liked pages since the cops killed this kid.

I swear, this shows me precisely why I consider my dog a better friend than almost any human I know.

This is adorable. Nick Gillespie over at The Daily Beast thinks that blah people are going to flock to libertarianism after the police fuckery in Ferguson:

The Libertarian Moment in Ferguson

Indeed, what Ferguson demonstrates is how tightly related abstract concerns libertarians have about the government’s power and the very real-life fears of police harassment that many African Americans have really are. So too are other issues of interest to both groups, ranging from school choice to sentencing reform to occupational licensing. As these sorts of newly recognized common causes filter through the culture, all sorts of new coalitions and possibilities can come to fruition.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) pressed for increasing aid to moderate rebel groups after meeting Syrian opposition leaders in Turkey Wednesday, warning that delays would “fuel the growing danger” to U.S. security.

McCain said pro-Western Syrian forces were fighting a “two-front war” against both Syrian strongman Bashar Assad and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a Sunni militant group that has captured huge swaths of both countries.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Events in Ferguson were quieter than they’ve been over the past few days. The rain that fell last night helped a bit. There were fewer people out, fewer arrests, and while the situation is tense, things seem to be evening out.

There’s political posturing as a the MO House Speaker, a GOPer, criticized Gov. Nixon (a Democrat) for his handling of the situation, and also called for a special prosecutor to be named. The Speaker is right, Nixon has been all over the map and a special prosecutor should be named.

Fundraising for Officer Wilson has now grown to close to $100k but he remains in seclusion with nothing but the occasional leak to right wing outlets that include Hoft that can’t be substantiated by any media outlets. There’s been no independent confirmation of Wilson’s injuries, let alone the claims that he was nearly knocked unconscious (which if true would be evidence that he could use to show that he feared for his life and would legitimize his use of deadly force).

Police blocked access to the County Courthouse where a grand jury was seated yesterday to begin looking into the Brown case. That’s quite troubling - the courts are supposed to be freely accessible to everyone seeking redress. It’s not just the grand jury case that’s going on there. There’s routine business that gets conducted, but the police once again showed a heavy hand.

That’s where we are.

Oh, and there’s this:

Guess Keene NH (which is a really picturesque college town I’ve had occasion to visit) hasn’t given up their own armored vehicle, even though they were mercilessly mocked for having one to protect their pumpkin festival.

Also, it’s funny but Heritage is claiming that a bunch of the gear that the Ferguson PD and STL County Police used wasn’t from the 1033 program that transfers military gear from the Defense Department to local law enforcement. I’m not sure which is worse - that they did get some items from the 1033 program, or that they decided that they needed this stuff and procured it elsewhere. In fact, it would seem that it’s even worse - because they didn’t have to even justify the purchases under even the lax request requirements under the 1033 application process.

Once again, following the law, how does it work? Law enforcement edition.

Oath Keepers and other law enforcement nitwits think that they can unilaterally pick and choose what laws to enforce, even on firearms.

While the position of sheriff is not found in the U.S. Constitution, it is listed in state constitutions. Nearly all of America’s 3,080 sheriffs are elected to their positions, whereas state and city police officials are appointed.

Lewis and other sheriffs, and their supporters, say that puts them in the best position to stand up to gun laws they consider unconstitutional under the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms.

“The role of a sheriff is to be the interposer between the law and the citizen,” said Maryland Delegate Don Dwyer, an Anne Arundel County Republican. “He should stand between the government and citizen in every issue pertaining to the law.”

When Lewis was president of the Maryland Sheriffs’ Association, he testified with other sheriffs against the state’s Firearms Safety Act (FSA) before it was enacted in 2013. One of the strictest gun laws in the nation, the act requires gun applicants to supply fingerprints and complete training to obtain a handgun license online. It bans 45 types of firearms, limits magazines to 10 rounds and outlaws gun ownership for people who have been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.

After Lewis opposed the bill, he said he was inundated with emails, handwritten letters, phone calls and visits from people thanking him for standing up for gun rights.

These law enforcement officers purposefully misunderstand the law; they are not carrying out their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution. They are choosing to ignore laws duly passed by state legislatures and the federal government.

These are people who see “States’ Rights” as too oppressively generalizing: individuals should have the right of negation of laws they disagree with.

Which is why every individual needs firepower in order to protect and enforce their choice of laws and rights.

Hannity is concerned about following due process. For Wilson. Not so much about Brown. Yet Brown’s the one whose due process and equal protection rights appear to have been violated by Wilson.

So, while Wilson’s rights should be protected going forward, the DOJ can only try and claw back some of Brown’s rights post-mortem.

Fox’s Keith Ablow: “Something Is Deeply Wrong With The Psyche” Of Ferguson Residents

Fox News medical contributor Keith Ablow wrote that there is something wrong in the minds of Ferguson residents who reacted to the shooting death of 18 year-old Michael Brown by a police officer with protests.

In an August 20 opinion piece posted on foxnews.com, Ablow opined that the psyche of Ferguson needs to be investigated following the unrest that erupted after Brown’s killing. Ablow suggested that the community’s reactions were racially motivated; accusing the residents of presuming “the moral depravity of whites,” which they would not have done if the teen was raped or killed by a black police officer.

Religious conservatives urge people to stop taking ‘ALS Challenge’ because it kills babies

The ALS Challenge is a viral movement that hopes to spread awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — also known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease” — by having individuals record video of themselves being doused with a bucket of ice cold water and posting it on social media. It has led to a dramatic increase in donations to the ALS Association — from $1.9 million at this time last year to $31.5 million this year.

But as McCullough pointed out, this money will be used to fund embryonic stem cell research, which “means that children are created and at their earliest stages of life they are destroyed so that the stem cells (from usually the base of the brain) can be harvested to perform tests with.”

re: #200 Bulworth

It’s a viral thing. Someone with ALS suggested it as a challenge to friends, and it’s ended up netting the ALS Foundation something like 20 times their normal charitable receipts for this time of year ($40+ million versus $2 million).

As of Thursday, August 21, The ALS Association has received $41.8 million in donations compared to $2.1 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21). These donations have come from existing donors and 739,275 new donors to The Association.

The ALS Association’s mission includes providing care services to assist people with ALS and their families through a network of chapters working in communities across the nation and a global research program focused on the discovery of treatments and eventually a cure for the disease. In addition, The Association’s public policy efforts empower people to advance public policies in our nation’s Capital that respond to the needs of people with ALS.

I used to rag on Kaine, but I think he’s a lot more down to Earth and a lot less full of it than Warner is.

My problem with Warner is that he goes around touting his business success, which mostly stem from buying up cell phone frequencies back in the ’90s after he was responsible for drafting their regulatory framework. (Congress got so sicked of people squatting on frequencies they ended up changing the licensing system so that anyone who wanted a license to a frequency had to prove that he had the money to use it, but by then Warner had already cashed out.) He also goes around talking about his business experience and success while Governor, but no one will call him on that VITA monstrosity which he created.

A couple months ago he was on WTOP talking about the Veterans Administration scandal and he kept going about “data management” and other consultant babble until one of the hosts got sicked of it and said something similar to, “Senator, the problem isn’t ‘data management’ or whatever other technobabble you want to throw out. Darth We’ll Be Greeted as Liberators! says what?

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is predicting that the beheading of American journalist James Foley is just the start of more violence if President Barack Obama doesn’t “deal with this crisis” in Iraq.

“The ISIS organization in charge is very much a threat to the United States, to our friends and allies, not just in the Middle East, but in Europe, and when you see them behead an American reporter, as they did today, that’s obviously a terrible development,” Cheney said Wednesday on Fox News’ “Hannity.” “But magnify that a million times over because that is what’s in store for the rest of the world if we don’t deal with this crisis.”

If you think the IRS was invasive with an income tax, and the reporting of employment taxes, just wait til they go to a tax that would require monthly or bi-weekly reporting and remittances. Administration would require more people, and auditing would require many times more.

Tax cheaters will try to cheat regardless of the tax type. Tax law is replete with examples of tax cheats for all kinds of taxes - sales and use, motor fuels, excise taxes, etc. If there’s a tax out there, someone has tried to evade it. The ways to cheat are endless too - from not remitting taxes collected (and bagging them as profit) to undercounting sales/revenues, there’s an endless variety of cheaters.

Fair Foul Tax simply shifts the tax burden on to those least able to afford it.

It’s not enough to compare the Ferguson protesters to Hamas. Ben Carson continues to flap his pie hole:

Ben Carson: Michael Brown Died Because He Lacked A Father Figure, Political Correctness

He told host Andy Parks that political correctness is distracting people from addressing “real problems” like teen pregnancy and “all of those kids who are born into poverty and will live in poverty and in many cases will end up without a father figure in their life and don’t know how to respond to authority and end up being killed like Michael Brown.”

Once more with feeling: the only reason Michael Brown died was because Darren Wilson was trigger happy and emptied his gun into another human being for no reason. That’s it. End of list.

re: #276 HappyWarrior

States have tried to expand the tax base, by starting to include certain services as taxable, but that hasn’t gone over well. And if you think the income tax code is crazy, now imagine trying to define prepared food - which is taxable in some situations, but not in others. It’s why there was a stink a few weeks back about whether a hot dog is a sandwich in NY. There’s all kinds of goods and services that have varying definitions and you’d need to standardize them in order to have a uniform tax collection scheme.

As it is, there are efforts to try and make uniform sales and use tax rules, but it’s a mess because not all states conform, and it’s up to each state to decide what to tax. Throw a national sales tax on top, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster (to say nothing of the states’ rights crowd who will complain that the feds are imposing their rules on “our” states’ rights to determine what to tax).

Italy has a small income tax, but gets the bulk of its operating cash from VAT. To make that work, they have a separate armed police force, the Guardia di Finanza. Those guys are totes serious about their mission, notoriously busting a baker for not collecting VAT on a pastry he gave to his daughter. They are hated.

Larger black market and barter economy. Make money less valuable, let the supply shrink due to being unused. And then re-enact the gold standard.

And the rest of the world howls in laughter as we destroy our own economy. Though they get hurt badly as well due to no longer being able to afford to import goods.

Plus having a bad foreign exchange balance or credit for getting raw materials starts putting pressure on to use other methods for getting materials.

The right wingers have exhausted their attacks on Brown for the moment, so they’ve switched gears to going after Darien Johnson

Johnson has revealed little about himself. He attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City for two semesters in 2011, but “wound up back here, struggling to find a job,” Bosley said.

During the summer after his first semester at Lincoln, Johnson was charged with a misdemeanor after giving police a false first name after he was arrested on suspicion of theft. He later pleaded guilty.

He was accused of stealing a package containing a backpack belonging to someone else from an apartment complex. When he was arrested in that case, he identified himself as Derrick Johnson and said he was 16.

An officer found a student ID card in his sock identifying him as Dorian Johnson. Johnson told him he was carrying a friend’s ID, but two Lincoln University Police Officers recognized him as Dorian Johnson. He pleaded guilty in circuit court to a misdemeanor charge of filing a false report.

He is wanted for failing to appear in Jefferson City municipal court to answer to the theft charge, court officials said.

Drudge links to a more inflammatory version that insinuates that Johnson lied about Wilson shooting Brown in the back - while law enforcement admits that Wilson did attempt to shoot Brown in the back, but missed.

The FairTax is a single-rate, federal retail sales tax collected only once, at the final point of purchase of new goods and services for personal consumption. Used items are not taxed. Business-to-business purchases for the production of goods and services are not taxed. A prebate makes the effective rate progressive.

Yes, the FairTax is fair, and in fact, much fairer than the income tax. Wealthy people spend more money than other individuals. They buy expensive cars, big houses, and yachts. They buy filet mignon instead of hamburger, fine wine instead of beer, designer dresses, and expensive jewelry. The FairTax taxes them on these purchases. If, however, they use their money to build job-creating factories, finance research and development to create new products, or fund charitable activities (all of which help improve the standard of living of others), then those activities are not taxed.

I don’t like bringing families into all of this. I don’t think it’s right. I read things about Brown’s mother, and all the other people involved, and because of that, I found this interesting and ultimately sadder. Wilson came from a very poor upbringing and his mother had her issues with the law (she received 5 years of probation for stealing and forgery [check kiting and credit card theft). I would have hoped that he might have had more compassion for people who are on the lower economic scale because of that upbringing.

All that said, how often does a person of color get 5 years of probation for stealing and forgery?

re: #335 Bulworth

Tax prebates work where you have regular repeating expenses/tax obligations. It’s often found in property tax situations. Vermont has a prebate for homesteads. You’re dealing directly with the taxing jurisdiction, and they have all the information and issue a prebate based on your information they have to date. You still have to apply, but there’s a process set up.

It doesn’t make any sense in a sales tax environment since you’re not likely to make the same purchases from the same place every time. It would require more invasive tracking of purchases and purchasers, than the right wing, let alone the libertarians, already complains about with government interference. It would be a total mess.

So what you’re saying is that the Fair Taxers and the libertarians have the same utopia in mind.

Oh, and another problem with the Foul Tax. Most every state keys their own income tax on the federal income tax. They conform to the IRC (Internal Revenue Code), adopting the provisions, rules, regulations, and other federal guidance - with state-specific changes based on state preferences (like not adopting bonus depreciation or capital gains rules or net operating losses). This would force all the states that currently have an income tax to either enact their own tax provisions - matching what the IRC previously had, or force the states to pick up a new tax regime that doesn’t match what these states have done for decades.

If you run a multistate business (you know, like the Microsofts, Kochs, Costcos, Walmarts, etc.), that’s the worst possible scenario since you have some measure of consistency when everyone works off the IRC as a starting point, but if all of a sudden you’re not forcing each state to compute their income tax differently, they’ll take different approaches, and leads to vastly more complicated multistate tax situations. Tax lawyers would love it because it would mean more business at the state tax level, but that’s about all who’d benefit.

And as I noted above, some states rely more heavily on business taxes than others.

The Communist “Attorney General” has finally come out and said it. His blackness trumps his responsibility to this nation.

If he were a member of the evil Caucasian tribe, it would be time to resign.

However, if you’re black in America…please feel free to stoke the flames of racial discord and bring the focus of all events to the racial forefront of everyone’s minds.

All the while supported by a complicit media, and all the while maintaining a zero liability stance under the leaky umbrella of righteous indignation.

It’s NEVER the black man’s fault, right Holder? It’s NEVER the black man’s RESPONSIBILITY either, right?

Just like how the black “man” in America takes responsibility for his spawn, right?

What an example the black man has set for future generations.

The blacks in this country are being sold out by their very own, just like 400 years ago.

Just blame whites, it has worked out VERY well for the industrious hard working black man thus far…no?

Keep up the good work, stay quiet regarding black on black crimes…YOUR PEOPLE are doing a great job wiping each other out.

Commies like you will put the KKK out of business.

Newsflash counselor, communism hasn’t worked ANYWHERE in this world, EVER.

And it will NOT work here either.

My test would be showing Obama doing something really outlandish and seeing how many believe it. It’s a form of confirmation bias believing what you want to believe because you already have your mind made up about the person in question. For example, if you were to tell the average FNC viewer that Obama’s favorite book was Mein Kempf, they’d believe it.

MR. RUSSERT: But what would do you?

REP. DeMINT: And it depends on how you shape that sales tax plan…(blah blah)

MR. RUSSERT: Will you have a refundable aspect for the poor?

REP. DeMINT: Well, I’m glad you asked that, Tim, because if just had a straight sales tax, it will hurt people.

MR. RUSSERT: But then you’re not abolishing the IRS. You need a bureaucracy in order to oversee and manage the refundability. ( Note: I remember watching this and Russert was really trying not to laugh in his face)

REP. DeMINT: …We could reduce the cost of taxes on every American. And, Tim, I just want to make it clear, I wouldn’t vote for any plan that came out of the House that raised taxes on lower income.

MR. RUSSERT: The personal income tax is a progressive tax, the more you make, the higher the tax you pay. A sales tax is across the board. It hits everybody.

REP. DeMINT: Not with refunds. And you look at the different plans. They all have exceptions or refunds to hold the poor harmless, and I would not vote for any sales tax plan that raised taxes on the poor or middle class or anyone.
