Exposing Gateway Pundit’s Dishonesty: He Altered a CT Scan Image to Trick His Readers

Scheming fraudster is busted
Wingnuts • Views: 65,508

Here’s another follow-up to my article about Jim Hoft’s dishonest tactics in promoting his bogus claim that officer Darren Wilson suffered a fractured eye socket in a purported struggle with teenager Michael Brown.

As I pointed out in the earlier piece, Hoft posted a stock image of a CT scan of a fractured eye socket, but apparently erased the words “UNIV OF IOWA” from his copy of the image.

Well, thanks to LGF readers @franklinftw and @loveheylola, I can now remove the word “apparently” from that description, because we have proof that Hoft (or someone who works with him) did indeed alter that CT scan, almost certainly to mislead people into believing it was an image of officer Darren Wilson. (And he was successful in fooling many right wingers, including Ann Coulter.)

A cached version of Hoft’s page at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine captured at 18:08:39 (UTC) on August 19th shows that when Hoft first posted the image, it did contain the words “UNIV OF IOWA.” Here’s a screenshot of the Internet Archive’s cached version:

Zooming in on the CT scan, we see the words “UNIV OF IOWA” at bottom right:

But an hour later, at 19:19:19 on August 19th … hey! What happened to the “UNIV OF IOWA?”

That’s right, folks — in that hour between the first capture and the second, Hoft crudely blacked out the words “UNIV OF IOWA” and reposted the image, in a pathetically obvious attempt to hide the true source of the CT scan.

A closeup view of the altered version:

Not only has Jim Hoft’s story been shown to be false by CNN, we now know he deliberately misled his readers into thinking this was a CT scan of officer Darren Wilson by altering the image.

Jim Hoft is busted. Exposed as a fraudster. He should apologize and retract this post, but I know he won’t — because that’s not how the Dumbest (and Most Dishonest) Man on the Internet rolls.

Obviously this will mean the Right Wing will abandon him in droves and destroy his reputation utterly.

Yeah… not holding my breath on that.

It’s been a big day for Jim:

Stupidest Man On Internet Proves Michael Brown Autopsy Is Complete Fraud

Doktor Zoom:

Most importantly, he [Parcells] is not, and has never claimed to be, the lead investigator in the Brown autopsy. In a follow-up comment, Parcells also insists that he has always worked “under the strict request and guidance of a licensed pathologist.” We wonder if Mr. Hoft is in the habit of screaming at dental hygienists, “You’re not a dentist!”

That Fox News used this information and treated it credibly tells us everything we need to know (and already did know, I guess) about them. Pure right wing propaganda outlet. They have the same level of journalistic integrity as SMOTI. In other words, zero.

Hat-tip to Backwoods_Sleuth, a first peek at the incident report for SLCPD relating to the Brown case. Don’t hold your breath, it’s very short. Two pages, barely.

But some very interesting questions in those two pages - the biggest one to catch my eye is why did it take Ferguson Police Department 30 minutes from the shooting (and we know backup was on scene by 12:04pm) to call for investigators from a separate police department?

8 lawhawk  Aug 21, 2014 5:09:00pm

Purposefully misled readers. Lied. Dishonest.

Take your pick.

Because Hoft maliciously introduced this in order to make people think that Wilson suffered a serious injury from his encounter with Brown, giving him the excuse to blow Brown away.

The reality is quite different. The injury wasn’t anything like what Hoft alleged and then outright claimed as fact.

But instead of retracting or clarifying that the scan wasn’t Wilson’s he went the opposite direction implying that it was. Attempting to remove details about the scan seals it.

Yet, it was such a bad hatchet job on editing that he left so many identifying features that it’s a blatant image grab from the AAPOS site. Right down to the Fig. 2 in the lower left corner, and all the other scan details, including the diamond pointing at the fracture on the scan.

Jim Hoft is a dishonest and malicious little man. Who also owes more than $3,000 for losing his bet to Wonkette. And still hasn’t paid up.

I was rapping to Party Up at my cousin’s wedding. According to Jim Hoft, I’m a thug.

19 lawhawk  Aug 21, 2014 5:14:26pm

And like that, Hoft’s already on to the next “breaking” event:

wow. Brown liked rap. Even had a misogynstic tinge to his lyrics. Ummm…. Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines anyone?

And what does Brown’s rap have to do with Wilson shooting him six times dead.

The answer…. drumroll: NOTHING.

It’s irrelevant to what Wilson did. Wilson shot and killed Brown in an encounter that should never have gotten to that level.

The focus should be on what Wilson did that day, why he used a firearm, and not on irrelevant items from Brown’s background.

Just as it is irrelevant that Wilson’s parents were divorced and that he was in a foster/guardianship situation when he was younger, the focus must be on what Wilson did, and how the encounter played out.

Hoft is being Hoft - maliciously engaging in smears.

re: #10 Backwoods_Sleuth

They were probably trying to figure out what the procedure was to deal with an investigation involving an officer-involved shooting. So, they called the county pd (an outside agency). That was actually probably the only correct thing they did in all this. But it has been a mess ever since.

28 Justanotherhuman  Aug 21, 2014 5:16:33pm

More kudos for Charles!

“Further, evidence posted by Jim Hoft to back up his claim was soon blown sky high by Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs when it was discovered that Hoft was using an Xray image that he claimed was the actual image of Officer Wilson’s injury which was supposedly leaked to Hoft, but in fact was an image taken from AAPOS website showing what an orbital blowout fracture to the eye socket looks like. Matt Drudge from Drudge Report heralded this proof as gospel, which then spread like wildfire across the right wing atmosphere like a match to dry hay.

Jim Wright explains why there’s nothing exceptional about American Exceptionalism.

This is part and parcel of The Big Lie we Americans tell ourselves. That one about our vaunted exceptionalism. Heh, heh, exceptionalism. Riiiiight. Exceptionalism isn’t even a real word, but then that’s par for the course. Tell me, America, what’s so damned exceptional about fearing the police? About living in fear of authority? What’s exceptional about armed troops in the streets? About armored vehicles and automatic weapons on the corners, in the playgrounds, guarding the schools and the store and the police stations? About blockades and showing your papers? What’s exceptional about being shot down without trial or due process? What exactly is exceptional about dead kids in the street? What’s exceptional about tear gas and rubber bullets - or lead ones for that matter? But then what’s so exceptional about an armed population? About citizens who solve their differences with pistols and assault weapons? What’s exceptional about racism and inequality and disparity and naked hate? What’s exceptional about crime and riot? What’s exceptional about the arrest and detainment of journalists and reporters? What’s exceptional about political division that verges on civil war? These things are all too common around the world.

Come now, tell me, America.

Compare the images from Ferguson, Missouri to Gaza, to Moscow, to Tiananmen Square, to Brazil, to any of a hundred supposedly inferior Third World places we see on our TVs every single day and tell me again about our great American exceptionalism.

If you want to be exceptional, America, then you have to be the exception. Q.E.D.

The events of Ferguson, Missouri over the last week are the norm in America.

Yeah, Johnny Cash. Willie Nelson. Pretty much every musician has written about drugs or alcohol (or both) at one time or another. Beatles. The Who. Zeppelin. They all did. And still do.

Then there’s the misogynistic song lyrics. Pervasive.

And all irrelevant to why Wilson shot and killed Brown.

Completely irrelevant. I find it particularly infuriating because this specific kind of stupid music-based character assassination requires an enormous amount of ignorance to be effective, and yet it seems to be effective.

If Steven Spielberg makes a movie depicting events that occurred during the Holocaust, nobody [who isn’t insane] thinks that the depiction of it equals advocacy of it. People don’t [usually] think Herman Melville really wanted to be called Ishmael in real life. But as soon as someone sets something to music, a lot of people think any expression uttered under musical circumstances is meant to be taken as a literal reflection of the day-to-day desires of the person uttering them.

From the fucking get-go, when Officer Wilson called in a shooting on his radio, there’s been deliberate cover-up of what actually occurred that terrible 9th of August. Hopefully the FBI report will shed some light on some of this, because the cops in St. Louis County are corrupt.

It’s complete bullshit.

I don’t blame Jamie or Adam for this, because they’re the “talent”, just as the Build Team was; I lay this squarely on the short-sighted heads of those at Beyond Productions and Discovery for this. As soon as the word gets out to the general populace about this, I predict a metric shit-ton of choice comments for the Beyond & Discovery folks about this.

Jamie and Adam are the heart of MythBusters, but it just feels wrong that Tori, Grant, and Kari are gone from the show (technically, IIRC, M5 is Jamie’s sole proprietorship and everyone else, including Adam, are his employees and Beyond & Discovery’s contract is with M5, so the Build Team might not be completely out on their ears, but who knows)

Damnit, Discovery and Beyond, to millions of geeks, nerds, and a lot of other people, the entire MythBusters cast is like family; to me, it feels like what I’m sure the Beatles busting up felt like to those of that generation.

It fucking sucks.

“Well, did he deserve it?”

Judging by the way he was wandering around the crime scene, Wilson, apparently well known bully that he is, crossed the line and he knew it.
His buddies on the force knew it, but they told him it would be okay, and they had his back. This shooting was supposed to be quietly swept under the rug, and disappear. Wilson’s life and career is worth more than the life of some dead kid.
They didn’t expect witnesses, or this kind of attention, which explains the overreaction.

I’m, of course making assumptions, but it’s not like this has never happened before.

Mark Fuhrman (born February 5, 1952) is a former detective of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). He has written true crime books and hosted talk radio.

I’m going to post this here so folks can see a story that Jim Hoft and his ilk may use as an “OUTRAGEOUS OUTRAGE!!” story tomorrow or over the weekend. This article is a straight piece of journalism, but other versions of the story may well not be:

Huey P. Newton Gun Club stages open carry rally through Dallas (VIDEO)

A group of some 30 African-American gun rights advocates marched in South Dallas Wednesday evening to promote self-defense and protest police shootings.

The newly formed group, calling themselves the Huey P. Newton Gun Club after one of the founders of the 1960s Black Panther party, open-carried rifles and shotguns on their evening walk along Malcom X and Martin Luther King boulevards. The peaceful activists, clad in black, according to the Dallas Morning News, chanted “Black Power” and “Justice for Michael Brown” along their route.

“We think that all black people have the right to self-defense and self-determination,” said Huey Freeman, a march organizer. “We believe that we can police ourselves and bring security to our own communities.”

After announcing plans for the rally earlier this week the group began its march around 8 p.m. at a carwash on Malcom X Boulevard and wound through the neighborhood for about 90 minutes. Walking and talking to local residents throughout its rally, the group stopped at a restaurant and ate alongside a Dallas Police Department deputy chief and shift lieutenant who were already patronizing the establishment.

Image: hpn-gun-club-300x162.jpg

To be fair to Open Carry Texas (OCT) and Open Carry Tarrant County (OCTC), both expressed support for new open carry group.

As for me, I maintain my position that this sort Open Carry activity will long guns is counter-productive and unwise.

Good God, so what has the FBI been working with? His recollection as events as conveyed through oral testimony? There’s gotta be more here, like a video tape of him recalling events or something. Otherwise the DOJ would have been reading these dipshits the Riot Act publicly.

The fifth amendment applies to him too, he cannot be compelled to even make a statement much less put anything in writing if he chooses not to. Any lawyer would tell their client not to make any statements or fill out any reports in a questionable shooting where he might be charged. His lawyer is probably the only one actually talking to the police, prosecutors, or FBI at this point.

I was under the impression that he didn’t even get a lawyer until days after the shooting, when the FOP said they’d be providing him legal representation. Was there a union rep waiting at the station to tell him what to do, what not to do, and how best to avoid leaving incriminating evidence? I read on Gawker that maybe there should be a law that says if a man wants a pistol it has to be embossed in bright pink. That way, men’s stigma of the color pink would go away and if a madman starts brandishing his pistol in public, everyone can see the gun clearly and can get to safety quicker.

Any cop knows better to start with, they don’t need a lawyer to tell them to shut up and not fill out reports. You think they don’t talk about “what if” amongst themselves fairly often?

It isn’t like he has been hiding under a rock his whole career, police often get sued and have complaints filed against them. He already knew not to go on the record, especially if he had any doubts at all about the legality of the shooting.

Mya Aaten-White, Ferguson Shooting Victim, Says Police Have Not Interviewed Her

The bullet lodged against her skull, near the middle of her forehead. Aaten-White says it took doctors about a day to decide that it was safe to remove it. She says when she woke up from the surgery on Wednesday evening, August 13, the doctors and nurses told her police officers came and confiscated the bullet as evidence. As she recovered, she says, she waited for those officers to return and do a full interview about the incident.

“I would ask every day while I was there,” she says, “‘Did anyone from the police department come? Have they called for me? Are they going to be here today?’ And nobody could give me an answer.”

Media reports have characterized Aaten-White’s shooting as a “drive-by.”
blogs.riverfronttimes.com

NBC:

A woman was shot in the head in an apparent drive-by shooting early Wednesday in the Missouri town wracked by protests following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer. St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said four to five black males apparently carried out the shooting on Highmont Drive in Ferguson, Mo., and fled in a car.

The Guns of Ferguson

Image: 76953879_453575526.jpg

This officer has a very well set up AR10, what appears to be a Knight’s Armament 7.62 SR25 with a 3rd party monolithic handguard and barrel, most likely free floated. Looks to be Harris bipods, Badger Ordnance charging handle, leather sling, and a U.S. Optics scope. The tripod is a Montrotto with a rifle rest clamped to the top. The canted Trijicon RMR and Inforce flashlight are rather puzzling on the other hand, devices meant for a close in fight wherein his rifle is a long range precision arm. Image from BBC News -

The BBC story is here. Note that all the officers seen here are county police and not Ferguson police.

Take the time to read the comments on this story. They actually have some useful tidbits. The Firearms Blog polices its comments quite well so there is no racism to be seen in the comments.

Mark Fuhrman (born February 5, 1952) is a former detective of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). He is primarily known for his part in the investigation of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman and his subsequent felony conviction for perjury. He has written true crime books and hosted talk radio.

While watching the OJ homicide trial, my father told me that that OJ would be found not guilty, because the LAPD was corrupt to the point of being incompetent.

More on Mya Aaten-White from Wonkette:

St. Louis Police Not All That Interested In How People End Up Shot, Apparently

She also retained Marwan Porter, a Florida-based attorney who specializes in cases involving police misconduct and personal injury. He’s in town now, and Daily RFT spoke with him yesterday as he drove to the Ferguson Police Department to try to obtain Aaten-White’s case files.

“We want to find out who and what agency took possession of the bullet,” he said. “We want to identify who was responsible for firing the weapon that ended up with a bullet being lodged in the front of Mya’s head.”

When we spoke with him several hours later, the story just got weirder.

“I’ve talked to both the St. Louis County Police Department and Ferguson…they have no record…no file number, no report,” he said. “They don’t have anything.”

Apparently they just don’t do paperwork in StL.

Jesus, the AR10 was a pre-Vietnam relic from the Eugene Stoner days. I had no idea it was back in production.

The 7.62x51mm chambered AR-10 in various guises has been back in production since the mid-1990s. The SR-25 the article speaks of is an evolved version of the AR-10 built by Knight’s Armament Corporation of Florida. It is the last design Eugene Stoner worked on before he died and is in service with the US Army as the M110. Since the adoption of AR-10 type rifles by the Army, demand for them has skyrocketed.

re: #369 Decatur Deb

Because a car of 5 or 6 young black men is going to shoot a black woman or into a group of black people who are protesting the murder of a young black man by a white cop. Then the bullet mysteriously disappears after an officer picks it up at the hospital and there’s no police report of the shooting anywhere.

We’re about the same age. I was 12.

That was the first summer we had the big screen rear-projection TV (at the unheard of size of 70”) and when the chase was going down I remember my dad calling all his friends from around the neighborhood to come over and watch. It was a big event in our house.

I’m a few (!) years older than that. I remember watching the white Bronco chase at my granddad’s in Tyler, Texas, the week before he died as a picture in picture with the Houston Rockets NBA finals series. (I was annoyed that OJ overshadowed the Rockets winning the finals.) Twenty years later (two months ago), almost to the day, I was watching World Cup soccer and sitting by my father’s bedside as he was dying. And yeah, I was aware of the irony.

Some designs have a really long life. Military and law enforcement have largely gone with double action or double action only handguns. But, world championship steel and speed shooters mostly use an evolved variant of the 1911 .45 100 plus years old and the very best for high speed competition in major power factor caliber. Not HK, or Glock. The old John Browning design still is a winner and a frequent home defense gun.

It’s odd to see this vintage gun in use in 2014 Ukraine, 70 years after the the Red Army used those rifles and many other weapons to finally expel the German Wehrmacht from the soil of Ukraine, but its 14.5mm rounds is still highly lethal and effective against many APCs.

I’ll have to check that out, thanks. When I lived in San Francisco, I spent a lot of time at the The Plough and Stars on Clement Street. One afternoon I was sitting at the bar reading Lady Astor’s memoirs when a rugby team came in and the bartender advised me to “stash the book.”

re: #257 HappyWarrior

Honestly, this is feeling less like Treyvon Martin which was terrible mind you but more and more like Mickey Schwermer, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman.

The pot-bellied copper shook hands all around,
And joked with the rednecks who came into town
And they swore that the murderer soon would be found
And they laughed as they spat their tobacco.

(Tom Paxton—Goodman and Schwerner and Chaney)

Well, sure, Rugby teams don’t cotton to “Readers”.

I was telling hte tour guide I brought up earlier about Yogi Berra being told about Dublin having a Jewish mayor and his response being “Only in America.” He loved that. I don’t know why but the brogue just makes one feel at ease. Everyone talks about the famous Dublin bartenders but their cabbies are just as nice. Always curious to know where you’re from and what you’ve seen in their city.

And while we’re talking about pistols, we have this lovely-looking Desert Eagle:

It fires the .50 Action Express cartridge or the always popular .44 Magnum. With a ‘Gold Tiger’ finish, its perfect for a fellow who wants to show sophistication in his choice of penis enhancement.

My nephew, who recently turned 21, is transferring to Emerson College in a couple of weeks. Anyone know of any good dive pubs in Boston? I’m from Worcester originally, but my knowledge of Boston is pretty thin.

Some sort of derringer? Or perhaps a Colt Defender?

Actually the Colt officers model. The defender came out later. I have both the steel and the very limited edition alloy frame models. If you followed early practical pistol sports the name Mike Dalton, Jeff Cooper etc. Anyway I bought the alloy frame one from Mike. He carried that as a reserve police officer in Sylmar for 20 years. He was very good to D_L and I with his tactical and speed shooting lessons.

re: #272 thedopefishlives

Yeah, I think that’s abundantly clear. Somehow I picture the conversation as follows:

“Hey, yeah, I shot some black kid to death out here on the street.”
“Well, did he deserve it?”
“He was in my way, so yeah, he did.”
“Okay, well, no need to file a report. Just lay low for a few days, we might have you leave town so be packed and ready to go. We’ll bring you back on with full pay when it all blows over.”

In the meantime, you should probably mow your lawn.

Test-fired a less pimped DE at the plant where it was made, in Nazareth. It made you glad to fire the 9mm Jericho.

Fuhrman’s been a semi-regular on Fox for years. They schlep him out whenever there’s a controversial murder.

Nice work if you can get it and don’t mind being on the same show as Sean Hannity.

The .50 DE is just too damned much gun. Hand cannon. One shot and then no control. Hard to concentrate with bleeding eardrums. Stupid combat weapon. Stupid weapon, period.

My grandad tried to teach me some, but i was to young to appreciate it. All that sticks is his pet name for me—Omadaun.

Have you ever read Brian O’Nolan, who wrote under the pen names Flann O’Brien and Myles na gCopaleen? Now there’s a writer. “At Swim-Two-Birds” is one of my very favorite books. I like everything he wrote.

And now to bed. Oíche mhaith agus codladh sámh.

My faith was so much stronger then
I believed in my fellow men
I was really so much older then
When I was young
When I was young

Half-cracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now.

He was just warning me that reading a book by a rich Brit aristocrat might not be a good idea around a bunch of Irish blokes getting their drink on. I kept on reading anyway, and the jocks couldn’t have cared less. Funny thing is, Lady Astor, née Nancy Witcher Langhorne, was from Danville, Virginia.

Webcite is good too. But a screenshot is the best way to preserve stuff like this, because they can get their pages removed from both Internet Archive and Webcite.

Can they remove them from peeep.us?
A screenshot is inherently unreliable, because it’s too easy to fake one…

Those two are easy enough to confuse but I always remember FM has the actual Irishman Dave King and DK’Ms leadsinger is actually of Scottish and German decent .

Dave King used to sing for a hair metal band called Fastway back in the day.
