Why It’s Pointless to Reach Out to Gateway Pundit for Comment on His Bogus Claims

A very nasty piece of work
Wingnuts • Views: 29,413

I’ve had several people approach me on Twitter this week (all right wingers) and angrily tell me I should have asked Jim Hoft for comment on why he deliberately altered that now-infamous CT scan image to conceal its source.

So just for the record, I’m going to point out that I have indeed asked Hoft directly, several times, to comment on this and other debunked claims he’s made, and he simply never answers — in fact, he usually just spews dim-witted insults at me, like this:

But his associate, who uses the Twitter handle @ProgsToday, did engage with me (in a manner of speaking) about this altered image two days ago. Here’s what happened (I recommend scrolling to the bottom and reading up, to get the full flavor of the nastiness):

Clearly, neither Hoft nor whoever’s behind the @ProgsToday account have any intention of answering a direct question like this. With these weaselly, sarcastic responses, we can only assume it’s because they have no answer, and that they absolutely did intend to mislead and trick their readers.

And as I’ve previously noted, it worked. You can find that altered stock image posted all over fringe right wing blogs as “Darren Wilson’s X-ray,” and this false claim even made it into Ann Coulter’s latest column.

UPDATE at 8/24/14 4:49:31 pm by Charles Johnson

Here are my previous attempts to get Hoft to comment on his use of a white supremacist group as a source, including an offer to publish his reply unedited. No answer.

Charles, didn’t you say you’d met the progtoday guy before? How closely tied is he to Hoft? Seems like I wouldn’t want to tie myself up in someone else’s stupid fight.

But, the key is….let everyone on the internet know just how much of a tool Jim Hoft (Dumbest man on the internet) is. Hit the message boards, make sure that when you print his name you add: Dumbest man on the internet.

It is the yoke that will stick to him.

Jim Hoft really, truly is a complete idiot. He doesn’t engage on anything because he can’t, and he’s dimly aware of it.

9 Charles Johnson  Aug 24, 2014 4:55:56pm

Hoft also knows that absolutely nobody in his target audience will ever hold him accountable for what he writes. And he’s being richly rewarded for the hatred he’s pumping into the political discourse - Drudge links are worth millions of hits.

Jim Hoft, the founder and proprietor of The Gateway Pundit, and Kyle Olson, the founder eagnews.org have joined forces in a new online project “Progressives Today.”

Many Americans who consider themselves left of center have an antiquated sense of today’s Democrat party. This is not their father’s Democratic party. Democrats today are controlled by, and answer to, the most radical elements of their party. Yet, with cover generously provided by the mainstream media, progressives are able to push their influence in the shadows. And they have no shame.

Progressives Today follows and publicly exposes the radical elements of the institutional left. It will be the go to resource for all elements of the progressive movement through old school investigative journalism. We will cover their conferences with undercover reporters, we will interview their leaders, we will follow their writings, teachings, social media presence. Our goal is to finally hold the left accountable for their radical opinions, their destructive policies and their dangerous anti-American agenda.

One of the goals of PT, in addition to simply exposing progressives, is to expose their views to moderates and Democrats so that a choice must be made. It is our strong belief that, Progressives Today will cause many on the left to re-evaluate their political alliances.

Yes, I know my folks listened to Rush Limbaugh, but they (rather ironically) taught me to respect my elders and respect the proper authorities. Bill Clinton was still the President, no matter how much I may have disliked his personal choices. ISIS / ISIL has also gotten help recently from the same Sunni Awakening Council members who did the bulk of the heavy lifting that Bush credited to his Surge. Unfortunately Bush wasn’t interested in ensuring that an inclusive, competent government was installed in Iraq, so the Awakening Councils and Sunnis in general became hugely alienated from Al Maliki’s dysfunctional crony bullshit regime.

Creationist idiots are going to be the death of this country.

I still remember how poor most British people were in the 50s when we lived there. In less than 40 years they have caught up and overtaken us, and they aren’t the only ones. I don’t think it is coincidence that the UK is one of the least religious countries in the world in terms of policy. Crazed fundies are free to spout their insanity there, but they have zero influence on society. Bio-science, the main target of of the superstition lobby in this country, has advanced by leaps and bounds in Britain.

Bush was interested, but Iraqi Shiite leaders weren’t and Bush didn’t have a way to get them to do things differently.

Your pollyanna revisionism is amazing. If Bush was interested in putting competent people in charge of Iraq’s transition then he never would have sent Bremmer, or kept him charge after he fired the Iraqi army. Bush’s administration was vetting the job applicants it sent to Iraq on the basis of their pro-choice bonafides instead of on their actual expertise in useful shit like logistics, civil administration and engineering.

Iraqis were treated like a back-drop as Washington’s famed Sofa Samurai and Think Tank Warriors magically remade the world. One anonymous Bush aide derided the “reality-based community” and insisted that the administration would make new realities for others to study.

The Bush administration sent 20-somethings vetted for their position on abortion to draft Baghdad’s traffic codes and other laws.

That’s Forbes saying this, not exactly a bastion of leftist thought. You really need to abandon this revisionist history whitewashing bullshit habit you’ve developed, because it’s become goddamned laughable. The fact is that Bush broke not only Iraq but destabilized the entire region, and had no deep interest in or realistic idea of how to fix his fuck up.

Church Targeted by Topless Protest Calling for Public Nudity Ban

COLUMBUS (Chris Vanocur) — A prominent member of an Ohio church recently picketed by strippers is now calling for a ban on all public nudity in the state.

Sunday, dancers from an Ohio gentlemen’s club protested at a church in Warsaw. Reportedly, this was because the church members had been protesting them for years.

Dr. Patrick Johnston is a member of that Warsaw church. After the protest by the dancers, Johnston posted this message on his Facebook page: “I am sick that women can legally bare their breasts to children and to married men against their will in Ohio.”

240 KiTA  Aug 24, 2014 11:52:43pm

re: #239 ausador

Finally, in his Facebook post, Johnston also writes, “The gay pride parade in Columbus is 500,000 strong - why? Because the women go topless.” As Johnston explained to us, “This is the only one where I’ve seen this level of nudity. San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C. I have never seen the kind of public lewdness i have seen in Columbus, Ohio.”

Er, wow, the level of delusion is pretty high in this one — but then again, I knew that when I saw “A Prominent member of an Ohio church.”

Saying that you have to be an atheist to accept evolution is like saying you have to be an atheist to accept chemistry.

If you insist on a literal interpretation of the Bible, then you have to reject almost all science - and logic as well - as the Bible contradicts itself in several places.

Good luck surviving in the modern world without the aid of “atheistic” scientists, engineers and technicians.

“The show needs more edge,” Turness told the Times, eyeing a return to a format of multiple journalists interviewing one guest. “It needs to be consequential. The aide said that guys like me were “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” … “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

1) Sex education is an attempt to get kids “hooked” on sex, which is apparently an addictive drug now. Right Wing Watch found this video from the Christian right group Alliance Defending Freedom that is attempting to scare people about a proposed sex education curriculum in Tempe, Arizona. Even though Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with the curriculum in question—-outside of being mentioned in its materials, accurately, as a place where one can go to receive sexual health care—- ADF is valiantly trying to imply that they’re the secret masters behind this sex education curriculum.

From 1984:

Sexual intercourse was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema.

…..

Not merely the love of one person, but the animal instinct, the simple undifferentiated desire: that was the force that would tear the Party to pieces.

…..

This one is particularly interesting—

What was more important was that sexual privation induced hysteria, which was desirable because it could be transformed into war fever and leader worship.

……

The terrible thing that the Party had done was to persuade you that mere impulses, mere feelings, were of no account, while at the same time robbing you of all power over the material world.

It’s kind of tough to believe Wilson’s side, when the FPD issues a blank report; the STL county police issues a similarly sparse report; and cranks like Jim Hoft are pumping out propaganda supporting Wilson by claiming he was nearly knocked unconscious and suffered an orbital blowout fracture - using a scan from 2007 to prove it.

But let’s assume that Brown assaulted Wilson and Wilson needed to arrest Brown for that and other charges, he could still have not resorted to lethal force - not when all eyewitnesses that have come forward indicate that Brown was surrendering when Wilson fired the fatal shot. There are any number of instances where armed assailants are captured by police without needing to resort to lethal force, including mass murderers, serial killers, and other armed assailants.

But because the police have botched/hidden the investigation from public view/scrutiny, they’re raising new questions about how they investigate cases, from the ordinary to the extraordinary and high profile. At each step, they reveal new levels of incompetence, and that doesn’t even touch on the disproportionate treatment of blacks in the community.

Defining words, yer doin’ it wrong —

Joseph Farah: Being Against Same-Sex Marriage Is A Sexual Orientation

Let me pose a hypothetical intellectual challenge: The law that forms the basis for the action against the Giffords in New York is a provision that bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Yet, isn’t that precisely what is happening to the Giffords? Are they not being coerced to accept and approve someone else’s sexual orientation? Are they not permitted to hold their own sexual orientation, one that acknowledges their God’s definition that marriage is a union of one man and one woman?

All the reports of Brown’s personal history and actions are red herrings to distract from the fact that an unarmed man was shot repeatedly and there is a glaring lack of justification for the act.

Pastor calls to imprison gays for ‘ten years hard labor’ with new constitutional amendment

In a video posted to his preachingpolitics.com website last month that was flagged by the Good As You blog on Monday, Pastor Michael V. Williams asserts that Christians have been “increasingly tolerant” of gay people over the last 50 years.

“Whereas homosexuality used to be a felony in every state — referred to as sodomy — it has now been decriminalized, and homosexuality is allowed to be openly expressed in public,” he notes. “While Christians are becoming increasingly tolerant of homosexuals, homosexuals are becoming increasingly intolerant of us.”

“It’s time for Christians to resume obeying God and his word, and to re-criminalize homosexuality, outlaw it again,” the pastor continues. “The only way to do this and keep it beyond the reach of activist judges and unaccountable bureaucrats is to create a constitutional amendment.”

Williams’ proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution declares that the “United States of America is a Christian nation with Judeo-Christian ethics, morals, principles and values.”

And it decrees that the “practice of homosexuality in the United States of America and in all its territories and possessions, and in all its States, Counties and Cities shall be a felony punishable by ten years in prison at hard labor.”

Williams recommends that his viewers “incessantly” contact lawmakers until they agree to outlaw homosexuality.

Police say Grim wrecked when a dog riding in the Ford Explorer with him tried to jump out the window. (Can you blame the poor pooch, crammed in the back of an SUV with 30!!! chickens?) He was apparently on the run from law enforcement in his home state of Pennsylvania.
Upon inspection, police discovered that the Ford Explorer was carrying marijuana, improvised explosive devices, a large amount of ammunition and two “AK-47-style rifles”. When arrested, Grim told the police he is a “sovereign citizen,” one of the fastest growing home-grown terror movements in the US, according to the FBI.

If we’re going to go that route, how about indicating that Wilson was part of a police force disbanded because of rampant abuses, racial profiling, and bad conduct. That occurred within two years of becoming a police officer and before he joined the Ferguson PD.

Apparently not satire—

Earlier this week, the Chicago Cubs grounds crew experienced a disaster. As rain poured onto Wrigley Field, they were unable to cover the playing surface with a tarp in time. They were booed. The game was called. Because of the mismanagement, their opponents, the San Francisco Giants, protested the game after it had been called as a win for the Cubs. They succeeded. It was the first successful protest in Major League Baseball in 28 years, according to Deadspin.

But the whole bizarre episode was cast in a new light Thursday when the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Cubs had slashed worker hours to keep them under 30 hours a week to avoid paying health benefits under Obamacare.

Citing “numerous sources with direct knowledge,” the Sun-Times reported that the Cubs had sent home 10 grounds crew workers early the night of the Tuesday game that ended in disaster. And at least part of the reason, per the newspaper’s sources, is that the team has been trying to keep seasonal workers under 30 hours per week as the Affordable Care Act takes effect.

The law requires large employers to offer health insurance to full-time employees (defined as those who work more than 30 hours a week) or pay a fine. The rule goes into effect in 2015.

A spokesman for the Cubs, which are reportedly worth $1 billion and were the most profitable team in baseball in 2013, didn’t refute the claims when asked by the Sun-Times, but he denied personnel changes were responsible for the field tarp incident.

Gary Cass: ‘Every Mosque In America … Is An Armory Of Hell’

Gary Cass of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission was a guest on the right-wing Christian radio program “On The Way With Paul Ridgeway” earlier this month where he made his case that the Islamic radicals in ISIS are the true face of Islam and warned that every mosque in America is “an armory of Hell.”

Saying that “we have fourteen hundred years of history to know what Islam is like and what Islam does,” Cass called for military intervention against ISIS to be carried out “with ferocity, because that’s the only thing that the Muslim mind will respect.”

“But the truth is,” he continued, “every mosque in America, I say — and this is harsh words but I think I can back it up — is an armory of Hell.”

Same here. My wife isn’t ready to give him free run of the house just yet - especially when we’re not around to make sure he’s not getting into trouble.

We’re able to limit his movement at night to the bedroom and adjoining hallway. My MiL bought us a folding baby pen to fence him in when he was smaller, but even as a baby he was too strong to be held in by a plastic pen. We detached two sections of it and use it to close off the stairs when needed. For some reason he won’t just push it out of the way, even though he could do so easily. Good puppy.

In his review of “proofs” of discrimination like these Cass urged parents not to let their children watch Obama’s 2008 inauguration, the “most perverted [inauguration] in our nation’s history,” and he warned that God might destroy the nation’s capital because of it (apparently Ellen DeGeneres’s Christmas Special in 2010 was predicted to cause Armageddon as well). In a spirit of bipartisanship, Cass also attacked Glenn Beck for his Mormon faith, since Beck’s religious commitment is clearly and unambiguously a violation of Cass’s religious freedom as well.

Islam 99% (Shi’a 60%-65%, Sunni 32%-37%), Christianity 0.8%, Mandaeism and other less than 1%. note: while there has been voluntary relocation of many Christian families to northern Iraq, recent reporting indicates that the overall Christian population may have dropped by as much as 50 percent since the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime in 2003, with many fleeing to Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon (2010 est.)[5] The percentage of Christians has fallen from 6% in 1991, due to massive exodus - two-thirds of Assyrian Christians have fled to other countries in the Middle East, Europe, the USA and Canada.

Dear God Almighty:

One of the Ferguson police officers who arrested a reporter for failing to leave a McDonald’s earlier this month is being sued for allegedly choking and “hog-tying” a 12-year-old boy, the Huffington Post says. (The HuffPo writer who was arrested, Ryan J. Reilly, is co-bylined on the report.) The incident occurred when the officer, Justin Cosma, worked for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a lawsuit filed in 2012 in Missouri federal court, Justin Cosma and another officer, Richard Carter, approached a 12-year-old boy who was checking the mailbox at the end of his driveway in June 2010. … The pair asked the boy if he’d been playing on a nearby highway, and he replied no, according to the lawsuit.

Then, the officers “became confrontational” and intimidated the child, the lawsuit claims. “Unprovoked and without cause, the deputies grabbed [the boy], choked him around the neck and threw him to the ground,” it says. The boy was shirtless at the time, and allegedly “suffered bruising, choke marks, scrapes and cuts across his body.”

Cosma and Carter, the suit alleges, then accused the 12-year-old of resisting arrest and assaulting a law enforcement officer, charges that were not pursued by the county prosecutor.

Another Ferguson officer, Eddie Boyd III, left the St. Louis Police Department after credible accusations that he had pistol-whipped a 12-year-old girl and a boy who was a high school freshman, HuffPo reported last week.

I laughed but there’s laws in Virginia punishing “assault by mob” and “murder by mob”, both of which were initially enacted to charge anyone involve with a lynching, the latter of which was used locally a couple years ago to charge 8 people involved in the death of a teenager outside of a party.

Most of the ones involved in the case ended talking plea deals (e.g., one plead guilty to misdemeanor assault) in exchange for testifying against the others.

OK lizards…this is way OT but wanted to get your opinions.
It is probably trivial but it bothers me when things don’t “add up”.

Real Clear Politics has Ernst slightly ahead of Braley in the Iowa Senate race.

However, they are not including a Rasmussen poll conducted August 11-12, which has them tied at 43%.

Now, this does not affect the RCP Senate rating which shows this race is a toss up.

But I believe if the Rasmussen poll were included, it would change their “no toss-up map” from R to D in Iowa. It would also change the no toss up D/R seats from 48/52 to 49/51

I have emailed RCP a couple of times through their contact page to ask why the poll is not included, but of course, no reply.

Am I missing something here, or is this fucked up?

re: #479 Targetpractice

Why is it a binary choice always presented? That he’s either an angel or a “thug”? Can’t he just be a normal teen who did some stupid shit but overall was a good kid?

Aren’t most teenagers assholes and idiots on occasion? I know I was not always the paragon of virtue you see here today.

But white teens, especially if it’s an upscale neighborhood, get any number of warnings and second chances and “gentle” counseling. Underage drinking, smoking pot, trespassing, shoplifting, minor vandalism… the cops point out how easy it was to catch us, what the consequences could be if they wanted to be hardass about it, then grind the pot under their boot (pour out the beer, bring our parents to promise the homeowner we’ll clean up the grafitti or pay the store owner, etc)…

We walk away with no record, we grow out of it and become responsible adults and productive members of society, with “amusing” stories of our youthful indiscretions. Black kids don’t get those warnings and second chances, they get the hardass approach from the word go.

I’d be more concerned if Darren Wilson had a juvie record or not and that has nothing to do with the price of tea in China either.

Shuddup Chuck, get a job.

I agree with Frank Miller’s read of Superman, namely as a very naive boy scout who can’t see anything in terms other than “good” or “evil.” And that in so many ways describes wingnuts, as naive little shits who can’t see the world outside of their own internally consistent binary moral system.

Note to NYT: Angels are mythical.
It’s transparently manipulative to describe any human as “no angel.”

Here’s a few things Chuck Johnson ought to straighten out.

Truth: Something Chuck has never cared about.
Justice: See truth.
American Way (if that way is the CCC).

He was pretty much told not now, not never, no way—go away and do not darken our doorway again (I’m paraphrasing his turn-down letter.)

Ironic given Frank Miller’s raging wingnuttery.

Cornell West:

Obama is a Rorschach test. But at least West’s last characterization (centrist) is a bit more accurate than the far right’s “commienazi”.]

West had a perfectly good identity before he found it necessary to define himself in opposition to Obama.

Cornell West has become his own caricature.

re: #446 makeitstop

Good puppy.

Get a (expanding) door baby gate.
