Awesome Live Concert: Austin City Limits: Nickel Creek

Austin City Limits is happy to announce a new taping with Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum Nickel Creek on August 25. The recently reunited Americana trio return with their first new music in nine years and for their third appearance on the show. Mandolinist Chris Thile (who also visited us with his band Punch Brothers), guitarist Sean Watkins and violinist Sara Watkins (who recently appeared with the Decemberists) came together as Nickel Creek in the late 80s when they were pre-teens, becoming a bluegrass sensation with a pair of albums released just a few years later. But the band truly came into its own with its Alison Krauss-produced third and fourth records, Nickel Creek and This Side, which helped forge its distinctive bluegrass/roots/pop identity.

Following 2005’s Why Should the Fire Die? and 2007’s Farewell (For Now) tour, the trio took a few years off to work on individual solo careers and side projects. 2014 brought the surprise announcement of a reunion and a new album, with A Dotted Line and its subsequent tour coinciding with the band’s 25th anniversary. And since we’re celebrating our 40th anniversary, who better than Nickel Creek to return for their third ACL appearance as part of our milestone season?

If you think black on black crime somehow excuses or overrides police brutality or excessive force by police resulting in a disproportionate and inordinate number of deaths of blacks, then you aren’t paying attention.

The people spouting off about the black on black crime purposefully want to ignore the statistics. They ignore the facts.

I get how HDR could enhance a scene, but it always seems overdone. It stops capturing the moment and becomes something else entirely.

But then again, my own style is to try and capture the moment as it happens, rather than getting the scene perfect (p-shop/HDR assist).

Speaking of chores…

I had some type of flu over the weekend (I’m assuming, not able to get to a dr) and my grandson had to take over for a couple of days, even missing out on OT work. No one else sick but moi—aching bones, feverish (but no fever registered), dry, tight throat, no appetite and dehydration-type thirst, with lots of hacking going on. So,, up this morning (it was a real quick and dirty flu) and my first chore was to clean the stove top (chicken soup boil over disaster under the element and beyond). Like most 24 yr olds, he has yet to perfect his domestic skills, but I couldn’t have done without him. : )

Just when you think a household isn’t a well-oiled operation, you find out differently. Dirty clothes, bedding, bathroom, and day to day stuff just waiting for me. Totally off-schedule for an organized, but not truly obsessed, neatnik.

Will someone tell me why dirty clothes in someone’s room will be dumped just short of the laundry basket?

Like 6 inches? : )

Yes, it is NEVER done right, because it isn’t right. It becomes an illustration not a photograph. I’m a big believer in as little post-process as possible. Let the picture breathe and speak for itself.

To me the problem with HDR is our brains can tell it’s off. Un natural. I found one good application for HDR, I was shooting Brazilian opals for a dealer. Tough shoot. Both focus stacking and HDR. All with polarized lens and lighting. it was the one time I had to go that far to get the image on my screen to get to the stone in front of me realistically. Something about that kind of opal found all the bad aspects of digital processing and artificial light.

I don’t read that statement to mean they are going to someone else’s house with those guns. What it means is that they can’t count on the police arriving in time to save them in the event of a home invasion, so they need those guns to defend themselves if needed. And I’d argue that is well within the meaning and intent of the 2nd Amendment.

That said, they should also have a properly stocked first aid chest as well.

I have no problem with HDR up to a certain point, as long as the goal is to capture an approximation of realistic human perception. The problem is that we frequently experience a certain amount of blown out highlights and no information shadows, and a lot of HDR photographers create a slightly flat scene in their attempts to maximize the histogram.

You also usually don’t usually want to drastically exceed the combined dynamic range of a human eye scanning a scene, which is typically limited to 20 to 24 stops. That’s a lot of dynamic range, but you only see part of that at any given time as your iris opens and closes, and your mind mentally stitches a gestalt image together, so it looks forced and artificial when a static image tries too hard to duplicate it, like an overly stylistic illustration. Some people like that look, but there’s a reason it strikes many people as unnatural.

Statistically those guns make them less safe. If you’re going to own guns, as I do, you need to acknowledge this. How they make you feel is irrelevant, and a really shitty basis for ownership. At the very least it’s incumbent on a gun owner to recognize the reality vs. their stupid subjective feelings.

There are other valid reasons for ownership, such as hunting or collecting, but the intelligent person knows those reasons come at a very real statistical increased risk.

I’m no fan of memes. Stupid oversimplifications. But as we talk about stats, the victim is always the first on the scene. Earthquake, bad laceration or break in by a sex predator, help comes later. So the sad truth is we are the first responders. just gotta keep it real not some fantasy of course.

That said, they should also have a properly stocked first aid chest as well.

If they lived 30 min from any kind of police presence (including State troopers, county cops or Sheriff Dept deputies), then they’re way out in the boonies where an opportunistic “home invader” wouldn’t probably venture because they’d be pretty much off the radar for those types. If they’re living in a sparsely settled county, they’re more likely to be patrolled by sheriff’s deputies, and less likely to be targets of home invasions anyway.

Although someone who actually knew them and where they lived might try.

This county is small and it takes about 30-45 min to traverse from the east border to the west; and about 15 min from north to south (on the new 4 lane hwy). And that’s obeying the speed limit, which doesn’t restrict the police.

Not that it doesn’t ever happen, but—

“Robbery is largely a big-city crime. In 2006, large metropolitan cities experienced a robbery rate of 173 per 100,000 population compared to a national rate of 149 per capita. Small cities reported a robbery rate of 62 per 100,000 populations, while rural areas had a rate of only 16 per capita. Obviously, population density and the urban setting make a difference in the robbery rate and crime potential.”

re: #88 Aqua Obama

LIZARDS! Hear me! Remember that picture with the EAGLE and the AMERICAN FLAG, and the BUFF MANLY COP who is obviously some kind of MUTANT WINGED CREATURE?

So I found the artist’s website

hahahahahahahahahaha

That image… I’d really, really like to know who exactly the “them” are. Not, I suspect, giant ants.

99 Aqua Obama  Aug 25, 2014 8:03:36pm

Since there’s a tornado in the background of that picture, you’d think windmills would work pretty fucking good

30 minutes from help? So that means an AR-15s is going to help with that medical emergency? Or that in a home invasion that AR-15 is going to help in a close quarters fight?

Or the domestic disturbance that escalates into use of firearms. Yeah, those will get solved just great with AR-15s.

This is an outstanding point that should be more-often noted. A medical (or fire) emergency with longer response times is much likely (by huge multiples) to result in death or injury than any (imagined) risk from marauders with guns. Not to mention the enhanced risk from the need to drive more leading to greater rates for death or injury in a crash, which also overwhelms risk of death or injury be attack by intruders by huge multiples.

His wife and kids would likely be more safe living next door to me in my Chicago hood with lots of blahs and Mexicans - and without the the guns in the house.

Glenn Greenwald, still disgusting.

re: #96 Aqua Obama

I haven’t been to that site for a looooong time. Check out that new “Stand Your Ground” painting. Deep. And what is this, “Liberalism is a Disease”? Magnificent!

You tell them, John. Two CAN play that game!

Steven Colbert. Closet Liberal. You heard it here first!

Satan isn’t even a closeted Liberal. In fact, he’s flaming!

FUCK THE AMISH

He also gets history wrong with the picture of Obama playing a fiddle while ‘America burns’. While that image derives from the Roman Emperor Nero supposedly doing the same thing while Rome burn, what Nero actually did upon hearing the great fire in Rome was to put on a theater costume and sing a song called “The Fall of Troy”.

103 Mentis Fugit  Aug 25, 2014 8:08:28pm

What should we call this “style” of “art”? In execution and intent it seems to be a kind of homolog to Socialist Realism.

Hayes asks a good question, though one that is difficult for a politician to answer because the ease with which an honest answer could be willfully mischaracterized. My own understanding of the said aftermath owes heavily to fiction writer Jerry Pournelle, but I’ll put it in my own words:

In the end, all USN airstrikes, Iranian armored brigades, and Kurdish Infantry (brave and able as all those forces may be) can only buy time for the politicians and tribal leaders of Iraq to repair the political mistakes that left the nation vulnerable to ISIS in the first place. Armed force alone is not going to get rid of the threat posed by Radical Islamism, only political and cultural reform can do that.

CNN has a new recording of the shots.

That story is almost certainly bullshit too though, designed to exploit the Roman status of actors and entertainers as infames.

They just lit that kid up. The last few shots seemed to be aimed at him after he’d already fallen off the retaining wall and tumbled to the sidewalk.

He’s such a fan of Jon McNaughton that he doesn’t spell the man’s name right. Seriously, if you’re going to name-check someone, at least have the courtesy of spelling the name correctly.

(There’s a place here in Mesa where you can buy McNaughton paintings…originals. I don’t know if they sell any of the politically themed works.)

Sometimes its hard to tell what’s truth and what’s fiction when it comes to scandal stories. That was as true in old Rome as it is today.

This part is great:

Mitt Romney
As Romney has come forth as the Republican candidate for President of the United States, Barack Obama has settled in on his own election strategy. Since he cannot run on his economic record, he has venomously attacked Romney from every angle. First he appealed to pet lovers when the news was released that Romney once traveled with the family dog and his kennel strapped to the top of the car. This didn’t hold well when the public was reminded the Obama ate dog as a child.

You’ve got to hand it to him, he has wingnuttery down to … well, I was going to say “a fine art”, but it’s hardly that.
