And Now Jim Hoft Is Dishonestly Smearing Capt. Ron Johnson

The most dishonest man on the Internet lies again
Wingnuts • Views: 43,784

Yes, folks, as much as it pains me to do it, I need to write another post about the Dumbest Man on the Internet tonight, because he’s spreading evil racist lies again, about something that’s easily checked.

Jim Hoft’s latest ugly race-baiting post: Celebrated #Ferguson Capt. Ron Johnson Pulls Gun on Unarmed White Kids on Bikes | the Gateway Pundit.

Last week Attorney General Eric Holder met with Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson in Ferguson.

Johnson was celebrated for his handling of rioters in Ferguson, Missouri. (Slate photo)

Now there’s this photo of Captain Johnson pulling a gun on white kids

This photo was from the “Ride of the Century” stunt bikers event in 2013. There was No reason for a gun to be drawn. The kids were doing bike stunts and the highway was clearly already shut down at this point.

Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson gun drawn on unarmed white kids.

This is what Ron is doing around those that he deems as thugs! Ron fears bikers??

Yes, there was definitely a reason for Capt. Ron Johnson to draw his gun, and these were definitely not harmless “unarmed white kids.”

Here’s some information about the “Ride of the Century” that Jim Hoft isn’t telling you in his post about “unarmed white kids:” Ride of the Century Fatalities, Arrests: Michael Evans Clips Cop Car, Crashes, Police Say | Riverfront Times.

After days of increasing tensions between police and the Ride of the Century participants, two riders died in crashes over the weekend. Many others were arrested and cited for a range of violations.

Metro police yesterday identified the victim in one of the fatal crashes as Michael Evans, a 32-year-old Harrisburg, Illinois resident. According to cops, he was speeding with a group of motorcyclists at around 6:05 p.m. on Saturday near an unmarked police vehicle on duty by Elizabeth and January avenues in the Hill neighborhood in south city. The group of riders were allegedly traveling southbound — in the northbound lane.

Evans’ motorcycle clipped the unmarked cop car while attempting to pass on the right, according to police.

That’s why Capt. Ron Johnson pulled his gun on these people. This was a lawless, violent, anarchistic event, not simply some harmless “white kids” doing bike stunts, and it had been happening for years, getting worse and worse. Finally, after people started dying in these “bike stunts,” the police cracked down and put a stop to it.

And Jim Hoft lives in St. Louis, so he certainly knows the history of the “Ride of the Century.” This is nothing but absolutely blatant racist incitement.

This can’t possibly be a mistake. Hoft lives there. He knows what the “Ride of the Century” is about. This is deliberate racist incitement. He’s hoping to get picked up by Drudge Report again. And it might happen.

I’m getting tired of this semi-literate hack. But he must documented at places like LGF so we’ll have a trail of Dim Jim deception in the event one of his lies makes it to Fox News or the Washington Times.

I just had a lovely, long conversation with my favorite nephew, who is also a rock-ribbed conservative. While he doesn’t spend a lot of time on the internet, he did comment that he reads a couple of blogs “because I agree with them.” It didn’t strike me until later that I read blogs because I think I can learn something. In fact, reading stuff I just agree with is kind of boring if there isn’t something more there. Which is why I love it here…

Yeah, that’s the difference between the hyper right and…the engaged left.

I read a handful of different blogs/sites, and I don’t end up agreeing with all of them. On any given day, I’ll read something somewhere, be it a “front page” article, or a user-generated “diary” that I don’t agree with, but am happy I read so I have a different perspective.

I don’t want an echo chamber, I want ideas, and even if I end up agreeing with a lot of them, it’s the journey there that matters.

If I only wanted validation of my fears, I’d be a conservative.

I don’t think a lot of people cheering for Zimmerman or the police hate Blacks (or Hispanics, or most groups) as individuals, but they find the world a scary terrifying place and long for safety and certainty. If you can identify an outside threat (Them! Whomever “They” may be) and neutralize it, then your life will be less scary. Except that it really isn’t, because Blacks aren’t what is going to take your financial security away, and aren’t why you don’t get respect at work, or whatever.

In the picture Jim Hoft paints that’s irrelevant; What Hoft is saying is relevant is that Johnson is a [n-word] who says things Hoft doesn’t like and who has pointed a gun at white people. The circumstances of those things happen are less important to Hoft than the idea that Johnson is “uppity”.

The fact is that fear and disgust play a distinctly larger role in conservative than in liberal ideation:

The political differences between liberals and conservatives might run as deep as the brain, researchers suggest.

Scientists had previously found that some psychological traits were associated with certain political views. For instance, studies have shown that conservatives tend to be more sensitive to threatening faces, while liberals tend to be more open to new experiences… .

Cognitive neuroscientist Ryota Kanai of the University College London and his colleagues reasoned that such fundamental differences in personality might be seen in the brain. They scanned the brains of nearly 120 volunteers to investigate the idea.

The researchers found that volunteers who identified themselves as liberal tended to have a larger anterior cingulate cortex, a region of the brain linked with monitoring uncertainty, which could help them cope with conflicting information. On the other hand, those who identified themselves as conservative have a larger amygdala, an area linked with greater sensitivity to fear and disgust.

Yes, they are racists, but I’m betting they don’t recognize that they are, therefore an effective campaign to eradicate that racism will probably have to use a somewhat oblique approach. Just telling them they are racists when they know they like “Bob, the black guy at work” or whomever (you know the “good” members of whatever race we’re talking about) they will just think they are being unjustly accused.

Yep. For me it starts with the Philadelphia, Mississippi speech. He could have used that location to give a speech on unity and healing but instead he did what he did often. Needless to say I’m not a fan of Reagan and even less so of the mythology. I’ll take both Bushes, Ford, and even Nixon over him.

Zionist Entity is an old term some Arab opponents of Israel use, under the reasoning that to use its real name would legitimize it.

I read more about the Salvadoran death squads and the mass murder of a Baptist village that had been evangelized by US missionaries.

Jesus. Gang rape through the night by a army spec ops outfit and then everybody was gunned down in the morning. A couple of kids and some others made it out. When US news got a hold of it, the GOP on the Hill accused the reporters of being Soviet dupes and of having anti-American bias. The testimony was never even allowed in Congress.

About three years ago, forensic scientists went back to the ruins of the village and examined gun fire patterns in the walls and collected brass casings.

All American brass, with case numbers traced to shipments from us to the Savadoran army. Utterly unimpeachable evidence in a US court if it were ever entered…but nobody is going to.

For Scalia I’ll reply: He said he’d have dissented because Brown was in his opinion too vague and poorly written I think he’d have favored a better-done ruling overturning segregation.

That’s so cute, how you convince yourself that he’d have done something he very explicity said he wouldn’t have done.

There were reasons Earl Warren was so emphatic, in chambers, that it had to be 9-0. He didn’t want any room for confusion, yet here you (and Scalia) are insisting there’s room for confusion.

ST. RONNIE BROUGHT FISCAL SANITY TO WASHINGTON!!!

Reagan famously declared at his 1981 inauguration that “in the present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.” This rhetorical flourish didn’t stop the 40th president from increasing the federal government’s size by every possible measure during his eight years in office.

Federal spending grew by an average of 2.5 percent a year, adjusted for inflation, while Reagan was president. The national debt exploded, increasing from about $700 billion to nearly $3 trillion. Many experts believe that Reagan’s massive deficits not only worsened the recession of the early 1990s but doomed his successor, George H.W. Bush, to a one-term presidency by forcing him to abandon his “no new taxes” pledge.

The number of federal employees grew from 2.8 million to 3 million under Reagan, in large part because of his buildup at the Pentagon. (It took the Democratic administration of President Bill Clinton to trim the employee rolls back to 2.7 million.) Reagan also abandoned a campaign pledge to get rid of two Cabinet agencies - Energy and Education - and added a new one, Veterans Affairs.

In December 1981 soldiers of the Salvadoran Army’s select, American-trained Atlacatl Battalion entered the village of El Mozote, where they murdered hundreds of men, women, and children, often by decapitation. Although reports of the massacre — and photographs of its victims — appeared in the United States, the Reagan administration quickly dismissed them as propaganda. In the end, El Mozote was forgotten. The war in El Salvador continued, with American funding.

When Mark Danner’s reconstruction of these events first appeared in The New Yorker, it sent shock waves through the news media and the American foreign-policy establishment. Now Danner has expanded his report into a brilliant book, adding new material as well as the actual sources. He has produced a masterpiece of scrupulous investigative journalism that is also a testament to the forgotten victims of a neglected theater of the cold war.

Yep, and before that he got himself elected governor of California by promising, among other things, that he would not institute withholding taxes in the state. His feet were “set in cement” on that. So when he needed the one time increase in revenue you get when you start withholding (this year’s revenue and next year’s both in one year,) he merely quipped that what you heard was the sound of that cement cracking.

Reagan’s indifference to urban problems was legendary. Early in his presidency, at a White House reception, Reagan greeted the only black member of his Cabinet, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Samuel Pierce, saying: “How are you, Mr. Mayor? I’m glad to meet you. How are things in your city?”

The church received national attention in the United States in August 2009, when it was reported that in Anderson’s sermon “Why I hate Barack Obama” he had been praying for the death of the president…

Anderson also told KNXV-TV that he’d like Obama to die of natural causes, as he does not “want him to be a martyr” as “we don’t need another holiday…”

Anderson told columnist Michelangelo Signorile that he “would not judge or condemn” anyone who killed the president.

Texas Megachurch Preaches the Power of Drones
Poor taste won’t stop this pastor
By Matthew Gault

The video opens on a birds-eye view of a city through a green tinted lens. An electronic user interface lights up the screen, an homage to the robot vision from The Terminator.

The camera pulls out to reveal the surveiller—an armed Predator drone. “Someone is always watching,” reads a menacing sentence floating below the death machine.

So begins a video produced by Pastor Ed Young and his Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas. It’s part of a teaching series Young devised to explain the unknowable mysteries of God.

“The Bible … says that God has all power,” Young explained in the second of three videos. “So I thought, why not put together a study and call it ‘Drones’ and talk about the attributes of God.”

You read that right. Young used the most terrifying and controversial aspects of drones—their ubiquity and potential for force—as a metaphor for God. Young is a powerful speaker and his theology is pretty standard for Texas. Baptist churches all over the state speak of God in much the same way.

But the drone metaphor is a terrible and disturbing one. It trivializes the big questions about a scary new technology and equates God with a weapon of war.

Everything is bigger in Texas. Even the DERP.

Suddenly Hispanics can be white in a conservative mind!

Critics say there’s a reason for the discrepancy in media coverage: race. Mr. Brown was black and the officer who shot him was white. Mr. Taylor wasn’t black — he’s been described as white and Hispanic — and the officer who shot him Aug. 11 outside a 7-Eleven in South Salt Lake wasn’t white.

Ride of the Century in STL wasn’t some one-off event. They’d been holding these events annually for years, and locals have been complaining since almost as long. Every year has been marred with vehicle accidents, unsafe driving, and the group that organizes it claims to have gotten 80 tickets in 5 years.

From 2011:

Drivers this week said they were startled by two things: the sheer size of the group — a thick swarm that often stretched a half-mile long — and its aggressive behavior.

“Every day you’ll see one of these fools dodging in and out of traffic, but to see dozens and dozens of these people doing it — it was absolutely mind-boggling,” Molina said.

Molina watched on Highway 40 as confused drivers to his right slowed, nearly causing a five-car pile-up. A motorcycle rammed into the rear car, the bike’s rider thrown about 15 feet in the air, Molina said. Another driver complained about the incident on an online forum, saying the biker lay still on the highway after being thrown.

The Highway Patrol has no record of the accident, but Vaughn confirmed the incident and said the biker was fine.

Hoft knows that these events go on every year, and that the police have been cracking down hard because of the myriad numbers of laws that these riders break.

These riders make Sturgis look like a walk in the park.

Though it must be said that was a pre-Godwin Godwin on Jackie Robinson’s part. Barry Goldwater was no species of fascist and many of today’s wingnuts would think him a RINO.

I understand why Robinson would say something like that, but he was wrong on that score.

It’s hard for me to reconcile some of the stuff which Goldwater said later in his career with his relationship with Brent Bozell Jr., suggesting the use of tactical nuclear devices in Vietnam, and opposing the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

153 A Mom Anon  Aug 27, 2014 4:46:08am

I notice something in The Racist Buffoon’s headline here too. He’s referring to white kids on bikes, like it’s a bunch of 10 yr olds riding their Huffy bikes down the road. Instead of what it really is, idiots on motorcycles who shouldn’t be riding in the first place because they’re a danger to the community with their lack of giving a shit. Because they think a motorcycle makes them Barney BadAss or whatever the hell.

Also, while Sturgis isn’t full of angelic law abiding citizens, the bikers there also don’t do stunts in the middle of big city traffic and get people hurt and killed. And then revel in being reckless and stupid. Drunk driving? Probably a few incidents, but it’s not easy to ride while hammered. Disorderly conduct? Yep, again, lots of drinking and people with a week of free time does that. But the bikers in Sturgis are a different breed than the ones in St Louis. The St Louis bikers would get laughed out of Sturgis. It’s primarily a Harley/custom bike/larger bike rally now.

What’s funny about Sturgis is a) the number of weekend warriors who don’t ride the whole way there but bring their bikes on trailers, b)the number of older white well off dudes who own Harleys (and Indians or other custom show bikes) and c) the lack of actual “motorcycle gangs”. There’s a few working class dudes there who own older bikes that need work every couple hundred miles, but mostly, it’s well off people going there now because your average working guy can’t afford a new Harley, let alone get 10 days off work to ride across country and back. It’s also redneck as hell, the whole vibe there is just weird, and after a couple of days the novelty wears off. There’s lots of beautiful country to see there and then farther west, why more people don’t take advantage of that is beyond me.

Usually our Anniversary tradition is to grill a London Broil, some corn on the cob & fresh tomato salad & a bottle of red wine, but a new steak house just opened so we have reservations for this evening.

A better way to look at him is as head of the stream of Republican out of which the Libertarians would grow. He certainly always opposed the theocrats.

But it’s hard to look at any of that generation and compare them to what the Teahadi have turned the Republican party into. I had a full blown Teahadi (beard and all) tell me in all seriousness that Bob Dole was a RINO. Sorry but that’s just ignorance.

Poor George Wallace (the comedian). I was Googling George Wallace to see what leaving Civil Rights up to the States, as Barry Goldwater would want, would lead to.

Honestly, I don’t know much about Goldwater. From the little I know, I don’t think he was a foaming in the mouth racist type but I think he was incredibly naive about just leaving stuff up to the states and I think Jackie Robinson was right to distrust him. The Nazi comp may sound a little Godwinsque but at the same time, we have to remember that Jackie was alive when returning African American soldiers from WWII were being lynched in the South(that’s why Truman decided to desegregate the military and to become a civil rights supporter.) So, yeah I do think that being African American in the South resembled many aspects of Hitler’s Germany for Jews. And he was certainly right to condemn a party that had once prided itself on Civil Rights that was running away from it. Robinson was no liberal but he was no conservative either in that he was blind about racial realities.

Congress granted a special exemption last December for Cushing to receive the award posthumously since recommendations normally have to be made within two years of the act of heroism and the medal awarded within three years.

Well, there’s also this (from the boston.com link):

The White House also announced that Obama will award the medal in a ceremony on Sept. 15 to two Vietnam War soldiers who also received the congressional exemption — Army Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins and Army Spc. Donald P. Sloat.

The award also will be given posthumously to Sloat, who was killed in action in Vietnam on Jan. 17, 1970, at age 20. Sloat, of Coweta, Oklahoma, picked up a live grenade triggered by a fellow soldier and used his own body to shield the blast and save his fellow soldiers.

Adkins, a veteran who served 22 years and has retired to Opelika, Alabama, plans to receive his medal in person. He was deployed three times to Vietnam with the Special Forces and is being awarded for actions in combat on his second tour, in 1966, when he ran wounded through enemy fire to drag wounded comrades to safety.

Exclusive Video: This Is How Police Treated Residents of the Apartment Complex Where Michael Brown Was Killed

Images of police officers using tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters this month have shocked the world, raising awareness of America’s increasingly militarized police forces, many of which are subsidized by the federal government.

While most of the photos from the Ferguson protests were taken on West Florissant Avenue, cell phone footage obtained by The Nation shows how the heavily armed police also made themselves known at Canfield Green Apartments, the neighborhood where Michael Brown was shot and killed on August 9. The video provides another example of the intimidation tactics so commonly used by law enforcement since the beginning of protests in Ferguson earlier this month.

Today is my wedding anniversary. Zedushka & I have been together 43 years. 9 kids, 37 grandkids. Through good times & bad (like the 1973 Yom Kippur War) but mostly good times.

Usually our Anniversary tradition is to grill a London Broil, some corn on the cob & fresh tomato salad & a bottle of red wine, but a new steak house just opened so we have reservations for this evening.

Mazel tov! And many happy returns of the day!

“A man is dead and a little girl’s life is ruined,” Scarborough cried. “I say this as a father of an eleven year old girl. Who would an uzi in the hands of a nine-year-old girl? What is wrong with these people? What is wrong with this culture? What right is advanced by doing that?”

Well here’s hoping the 9th circuit takes the same approach and asks the same type of questions at next months hearings as the Judges of the 7th circuit did.

Judges chide state lawyers over gay marriage bans

Richard Posner, who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, hit the backers of the ban the hardest. He balked when Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General Timothy Samuelson repeatedly pointed to “tradition” as the underlying justification for barring gay marriage.

“It was tradition to not allow blacks and whites to marry - a tradition that got swept away,” the 75-year-old judge said. Prohibition of same-sex marriage, Posner said, derives from “a tradition of hate … and savage discrimination” of homosexuals.

I posted about the instructor being killed by the 9 year old girl who lost control of an Uzi yesterday, but now video emerges of the moments before the fatal shot.

The gun is bigger than she is. There’s no way she could ever safely control that weapon consistently. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

And now that it has, there’s a dead instructor (who should have known better) and a traumatized family, and the parents should have known better too).

Everyone involved, other than the girl, should have known better. The gun range saw dollar signs from a family willing to drop a few bucks to see and fire automatic weapons.

Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s right or prudent.

This wasn’t the first time something like this happened.

The answer isn’t to shrug and point at the 2d Amendment and say that anyone can and should be able to fire guns.

The answer is to make sure that people are old enough to understand what they’re doing, be able to have control over the weapon, and to limit access to these weapons that serve no purpose for a civilian population.

Crews find crash site in forest, suspect F-15 down

DEERFIELD A Washington, D.C., airport is reporting to police dispatchers that a military jet crashed in the forest near Deerfield this morning.

“I’m on location, with smoke, and we do have debris,” said a breathless responder on emergency radio frequencies at 10:04 a.m. “I got debris everywhere… I haven’t located anybody.”

Virginia State Police confirmed that they were notified at 9:06 a.m. of a plane crash. The crash site appears to be near the side of the mountain.

Other emergency crews were still looking for the possible crash site. It’s near Cold Springs Road, a fire road off Old Parkersburg Turnpike.

In a jet like an F-15, the pilot would have possible ability to eject before a plane crash. State Police is apparently trying to launch a helicopter, probably to look for a survivor.

There are ways to teach kids about guns at that age that don’t involve handing them an Uzi and hoping for the best. There are smaller caliber rifles that are made for kids so they can safely learn to shoot, or even hunt. That’s how my cousins learned to hunt, and those were the kinds of guns I was exposed to as a kid.

Putting an Uzi into a 9-year old’s hands should lead to some sort of charges for negligence and child endangerment. Full stop. Anyone who does that is an idiot.

Massive Military-Grade Weapons Caches in Arizona - P. 13

The police department in Maricopa County, Arizona
- led by the infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio - has a .50
caliber machine gun that shoots bullets powerful enough
to blast through the buildings on multiple city blocks.
That’s not all: the department has stockpiled a combined
total of 120 assault rifles, five armored vehicles, and ten
helicopters. This arsenal was acquired mainly through the
Department of Defense’s 1033 program, which transfers
military-grade weaponry to state and local police
departments, free of charge.

Maricopa County is not unique. According to our
research, law enforcement agencies in Arizona have
acquired a staggering cache of military weaponry,
primarily through the 1033 program, including:

Oy. I just found out that a client has been collecting money on a yearly drive for Breast Cancer Awareness for the past three years, using an unsecured form. I took the site over last year and this is my first go-round with this fund drive.

I just sent her an email explaining to her that this is not a good idea. She’s using a 501c to actually process the card info - I suggested that maybe we should ask them to set up a form on their site instead of the client’s company (or me!) facing potential liability if someone’s card info gets jacked.

Either that or collect all information except card info, and have the 501 get that info when following up with donors.

I hope she decides to go with one of my suggestions on this. Shit makes me nervous.

Gun tourism is *absolutely* a thing. Whenever I have visiting Brits, one of the things all of them are eager to do is go to a range a shoot stuff. Then to go to a gunshop and goggle at the selection, that anybody can just pick anything off the wall and take it home… years ago they’d get a big kick out of seeing at K-Mart the ammo displays near the checkout counter, with chewing gum and magazines and other impulse items.

Zara Pulls Baby Top from Stores Due to Accidental Holocaust Imagery

Spanish clothing store Zara has removed a line of baby tops after anybody with eyes critics noted its sheriff star insignia looked a whole lot like the yellow Star of David many European Jews were forced to wear as identification by the Nazis.

“The garment was inspired by the classic Western films, but we now recognise that the design could be seen as insensitive and apologise sincerely for any offence caused to our customers,” a Zara spokesperson said Wednesday.

Actor and anti-vaxxer Rob Schneider: I have proof the CDC ‘fraudulently changed’ autism data

Can we just give these morans a deep cable reality show so they think someone will take their babbling seriously?

I don’t know how many people remember the show Andromeda which starred Sorbo, but on the show there were a race of genetically modified humans called “Nietzscheans”. Their whole philosophy for living was a combination of Nietzsche’s and Ayn Rand’s philosophy (one of the Nietzschean characters is shown reading Rand’s The Fountainhead, and one of the main space stations controlled by the Nietzscheans was “Fountainhead Station”.

As anyone can guess, the Nietzscheans were about as arrogant and self-serving as can be expected, and they rose up against the controlling central government in a rebellion. The rebellion didn’t last that long before it collapsed because the Nietzscheans couldn’t stop killing one another. But the damage was done and the central government collapsed too, ushering in a 300+ year long Dark Age.

Funny that Sorbo didn’t seem to pick that up from a show which he starred in and doesn’t mind parroting that Ayn Rand/Calvinism bullshit which he loves.

As in #346. You don’t want it lodged in your lungs or stuck through your skin. There is a cancer risk that is NBD because uranium, like most heavy metals, is toxic independent of radioactivity. It will save you from cancer by poisoning you.

After a fire, like in an armored vehicle that’s been attacked, the cleanup crews require decent respiratory protection and washdown facilities, like we didn’t do in Doha.

It was no surprise, then, that when some UK outlets of the Inditex Group’s chain of Zara fashion stores began to offer a handbag adorned with green swastikas at each corner in September 2007, consumers soon voiced vociferous complaints about the item:…

The company quickly withdrew the bag from its stores, saying it had not noticed the inclusion of the symbol and that its use was not a part of the design it had originally approved:

Zara, owned by the world’s second largest fashion retailer Inditex, said it did not know the 39£ ($78) handbag had green swastikas on its corners.

The bags were made by a supplier in India and inspired by commonly used Hindu symbols, which include the swastika. The original design approved by Zara did not have swastikas on it, Inditex said.

“After the return of one bag we decided to withdraw the whole range,” said a spokesman for Inditex, which has more than 3,330 stores in 66 countries.

394 Schadenboner  Aug 27, 2014 9:08:47am

I’d actually like to see some discussion of this. I think it depends on whether the seatback is considered part of the seat of the person facing it or the person who’s sitting in the seat front onto which the seatback is attached.

On the one hand, the stewardess doesn’t ask you “please return the person in front of you’s meal tray to its original position” when doing the pre-landing announcement so the pocket and tray on the seatback (at least) is pretty clearly part of “your” seat.

But, since the the recliningness of the seat is a built-in function operated solely by the person sitting in the seat, maybe the seatback “belongs” to the person sitting in the seat front.

I don’t travel enough to have a dog in this fight but the knee defender seems like a dick move, but having to stare at the snoring face of the person in front of me is, likewise, dickish.

TLDR: make airline executives fly coach.

So there’s a knock at my door, waking me up, and it was the park manager asking if I knew the guy who lived a few doors away. I can’t say I know him but I’ve seen him around and would recognize him. She asked if I would mind coming out to ID a guy who said he lived there. I threw on some clothes and see 3 cop cars out there. There was a guy in the back of one of them. “Nope, never saw him before. Definitely not the guy who lives in that rig.”

The police had the guy out of the car and were handcuffing him when I took the boys out for their morning walk. By the time I got back about 20 minutes later, there were 2 more cop cars in addition to the 3 already there. What is this, the crime of the month? Asked the manager later and turned out it was just a grubby, seemingly quite inebriated, guy hanging around the park who doesn’t belong here. So 5 cop cars to arrest a vagrant? Must be a slow day.

Since we can hope that very few elementary school kids have actually fired Uzis, the fatality rate for those that try seems fairly high (100% of all I’ve ever heard of).

Ben Stein: Michael Brown ‘Wasn’t Unarmed. He Was Armed With His Incredibly Strong, Scary Self’

“The idea of calling this poor man ‘unarmed’ when he was six-foot-four, 300 pounds, full of muscles, apparently — from what I read in the New York Times — on marijuana, to call him unarmed is like calling Sonny Liston unarmed or Cassius Clay unarmed,” Stein said.

He went on to accuse Attorney General Eric Holder of leading a “lynching” of the police officer who killed Brown, alleging that the deaths of Brown and of Trayvon Martin were cases of a “very large so-called victim attacking a policeman.”

Remind me again why anyone takes this guy seriously?

O’Reilly asked whether “we have Asian privilege in America” after analyzing differences across racial demographics and observing the success of Asian Americans who have the lowest rates of unemployment and highest median incomes in the country.

Citing the intactness of Asian American families and the “emphasis” placed on education, O’Reilly suggested that these things aren’t emphasized in African American culture, which is why they aren’t as successful.

I’m not aware of any religion using the concept of Trinity except Christianity. Note, that merely worshiping “3 main gods” (e.g. Trimurti) doesn’t amount to Trinity. Trinity is 3 Gods = 1 God. Meh, 99% of modern Christians are mostly Unitarian with a streak of Arianism to cover the whole son of god/son of man thing. The vast majority of believers couldn’t even imagine, much less name, things like the various early Christological heresies. Nah, Arius won a long time ago.

I don’t know. If his feet won’t penetrate the water surface, can he get his hands into the water to retrieve the ball?

FFS, He’s God!

He’d send someone else.

Well, in “practical”-“analogical” sense I would argue that many, if not most, are poly- or at least henotheists, because that’s what worship of Mary & saints amounts to - I doubt lay people care about subtleties, they do see them as divine entities. (Plus the whole statues/icons/relics stuff).

I don’t know if I agree. When I was attending church (Methodist, 30+ years ago) it was still a regular thing to recite the Nicene Creed and sing about “God in Three Persons.” I can’t speak for how well people internalized those words, but they were quite current and quite Trinitarian.

Mary worship is an interesting & huge can of worms and I say that as a very catholic high church Anglican ;) I do love ikons though.

I love icons, though probably in a different sense than you. I find them fascinating as art objects.

Sit down with them and ask the to explain what that means and how it happens. I guarantee you that far more people will say that Christ was born of & after God (in one of the variations of Arius’ commentary) than not. One of Athanasius of Alexandria’s problems with the Nicene creed was that Arius and his followers _could_ say it without out conflict with their beliefs.

I have mostly that love of them as well. Not growing up with them in my worship is quite helpful in that respect. Nice as a meditation focus as well but still…

Please understand that I am not trying to be hostile here, but rather trying to get into a proper discussion: what makes Scientology vs. any other religion more or less valid than each other? I approach this from the angle of an atheist, to be up-front about it.

Fox circa 1950, why can’t we have Francisco Franco for 48 hours to deal with the communist problem.

Looks like it is time to repost these…

Communist JFK supports indoctrination of white children!

Nixon needs to stand up to welfare state, negro entitlements!

Not to defend the Catholic church, but I’ve never been required to pay a fee to enter a RC cathedral or attend their services.

The biggest difference between a religion and a cult is that a religion is happy for anyone and everyone to know what they believe, they’ll tell you as much about it as you’re willing to listen to. Cults have secrets; only members who’ve proved their loyalty and commitment are allowed to know most of the “beliefs”.

re: #504 sagehen

It’s true, when we’re talking about social aspects, CoS loses on points. But we’re talking about the validity of religious beliefs, and that is independent from the social stuff. In theory, CoS could be an unbelievably evil cult (in our eyes at least) and still be the one true religion.

And when one rejects both Catholicism and Scientology as valid worldviews, then they both contain tons of absurdities, etc.
