Report: Police Ran Over and Destroyed Michael Brown Memorial, Police Dog Urinated on It

Ugly
US News • Views: 35,939

The disdain with which the St. Louis County and Ferguson police departments view the black community of Ferguson was obvious with their massive militarized crackdown on protesters, but new details in an article at Mother Jones by Mark Follman shed light on why the community was so infuriated after the shooting of Michael Brown: Michael Brown’s Mom Laid Flowers Where He Was Shot—and Police Crushed Them.

Soon, police vehicles reappeared, including from the St. Louis County Police Department, which had taken control of the investigation. Several officers emerged with dogs. What happened next, according to several sources, was emblematic of what has inflamed the city of Ferguson, Missouri, ever since the unarmed 18-year-old was gunned down: An officer on the street let the dog he was controlling urinate on the memorial site.

The incident was related to me separately by three state and local officials who worked with the community in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. One confirmed that he interviewed an eyewitness, a young woman, and pressed her on what exactly she saw. “She said that the officer just let the dog pee on it,” that official told me. “She was very distraught about it.” The identity of the officer who handled the dog and the agency he was with remain unclear.

Candles and flowers marking the spot where Brown died were soon run over by police vehicles.

The day brought other indignities for Brown’s family, and the community. Missouri state Rep. Sharon Pace, whose district includes the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, told me she went to the scene that afternoon to comfort the parents, who were blocked by police from approaching their son’s body. Pace purchased some tea lights for the family, and around 7 p.m. she joined Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, and others as they placed the candles and sprinkled flowers on the ground where Brown had died. “They spelled out his initials with rose petals over the bloodstains,” Pace recalled.

By then, police had prohibited all vehicles from entering Canfield Drive except for their own. Soon the candles and flowers had been smashed, after police drove over them.

This account is partly confirmed by St. Louis alderman Antonio French, who took a photo of the crushed remnants of the memorial:

Sounds like another police department in MO may need to be disbanded. What a bunch of ugly thugs.

14 lawhawk  Aug 27, 2014 12:13:19pm

The federal investigations can’t come soon enough for both these agencies.

And the sad part is that this is just the most visible incident. How many other agencies do the same or similar things without the glare of media attention that Ferguson has managed to generate.

But remember, the Supreme Court said racism is dead.

This is a police department that needs to be disbanded just as surely as the department that Wilson previously belonged to was disbanded.

And the city council and mayor ought to see the boot as well. They’re ultimately responsible for the direction Ferguson’s police department has taken.

Why do we need a vote to remove ISIS from Iraq? Last I checked, the AMF is still in effect. The President can deploy however many troops and materiel he likes to Iraq and tell Congress to go soak their heads.

If anybody’s noticed I’ve been posting very lightly, the main reason is that I’ve still got residual problems from my accident earlier this year. I’m continuing to get medical treatment, but it’s really sapping my energy and, most of all, making me near-permanently grouchy. So as well as not having as much to say as usual, i’m trying to avoid snapping posting while in pain because I don’t want to be overly harsh or mean or whatever.

On topic:

It is sad, but true, that the lessons we learned during the Civil Rights era have been forgotten. Don’t confront the community, co-opt them through engagement.

I think that the fear that the white political power structure has of black people in the US is getting to be insane, and that it’s systematized and institutionalized more and more. You can hear this in the speeches by GOP politicians, a great belief, a terrible fear of black vengeance.

Black people, of course, don’t want this bloody vengeance, they just want a fair shake.

I live in a rural neighborhood. We hear gunshots and fireworks all the time (and yes, from a decent distance, firearms and small-caliber fireworks sound remarkably similar). If a guy rattled off a whole clip’s worth of bullets, I might look out my window to see if it was a chain fireworks box, but otherwise not give it a second thought.

61 KerFuFFler  Aug 27, 2014 12:30:26pm

I think the blatant disrespect for the Brown memorial was just a part of the overall strategy to provoke the community to riot. Once there was rioting, the police were counting on public opinion shifting in their favor since “those people are so unruly and obviously require violent police interventions”. They hoped riots would completely overshadow Brown’s death.

You got a full head of manufactured outrage building. Don’t let it go to waste. Frankly this whole concept is silly. What did anyone suppose was going to happen to flowers laid in the street? But let’s not stop there. the police can’t be the only ones who drove done that street. Save some anger for everyone else who drove down the street. Re dog peeing? What’s the radius of the memorial site? Ten feet? Fifty Feet? Who’s job was it to alert the dog to where the no peeing boundary was?

frankly, i don’t even know why they bother to build churches and synagogues. what’s to stop dogs from taking a crap on the altar?

First, the street was closed to all vehicles except police cars. Thus, the police could have driven around the memorial, if they had to drive on the street, if it had actually been necessary.

Second, what Obdicut wrote in No. 67.

Sure they can.

So now you know more about my dog than I do?

Now why exactly are they trained to pee on command for police purposes? comedic highlights.

Nobody said they were trained to pee for police purposes. My dog wasn’t “trained” to pee either. But after 1-2 years of telling your dog to “go potty” or whatever command you use they pick up on those words and know what to do. Since you don’t seem to know that I’m going to assume you’re completely fucking ignorant about dogs so it would probably be wise to cease speaking about something you know nothing about.

And another thing. Most likely the dog was a male dog and was unaltered. Unaltered male dogs tend to lift their legs and pee on things. Especially things that are sticking up from the ground. So another possibility is that the dog started to pee as they are prone to do and the handler did nothing to stop him. Just as bad in my book.

No you miss the point. In fact this is very very sad. It is sad that people are so committed to a narrative that they will believe anything all as long as it conforms to what they want to believe.

Speaking from recent experience, eh?

And so someone wants to sell the idea that the police in Ferguson are all so evil that they would intentionally desecrate a memorial and use their trained police peeing dogs to do so. Has never stopped this particular PD in the past from doing any number of things up to and including the murder of an unarmed kid a couple of weeks ago. So I think desecrating a memorial for the kid is pretty low on their list of evil and despicable acts.

I am trying to step back and take a deep breath about this, even try to consider the position of a lot of policemen who know they are risking a violent confrontation every time they stop to make a routine check, and especially when they respond to a call of an armed or potentially armed perpetrator.

But I see a circling of wagons surrounding this incident. And the frustration of being caught out and not able to just blow up a smoke screen and walk away fro the incident unscathed.

We want police to be able to have discretion to deal with incidents that can quickly turn violent. We want to give them the tools and means to avoid needing lethal force, but to give them the ability to do so when there is no other option.

But there’s a social compact involved. The law enforcement agencies are supposed to protect and serve everyone in the community - the public - regardless of color or creed. But we’ve repeatedly seen that police officers ignore the social compact and target some groups - singling them out for disproportionate searches, arrests, detainment, even though it’s evident that the police are doing so based not on probable cause but by race.

Rebuild and regain the trust? It’s possible, but it’s going to take a rethinking. Police cameras will help address some of the situations. It will help curtail some of the incidents that turn deadly - and shed light on whether a given incident involves excessive force and police brutality and those that are legitimate uses of force.

Some departments might balk at the idea, except that all the evidence points to the use of the cameras as reducing the claims of brutality and liability to the department for baseless claims. It protects the officer as much as it protects the community.

But cameras are only the start. Better policing also includes recognizing that breaking out riot gear and armored vehicles while a protest is still peaceful signals that they’re provoking an incident.

Empathy. It’s completely missing from every action by the FPD and St. Louis County police. That’s due, in part, because so few officers are actually part of (or look like) the community they’re policing.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

And so someone wants to sell the idea that the police in Ferguson are all so evil that they would intentionally desecrate a memorial and use their trained police peeing dogs to do so.

You really need to actually interact with living people, including cops. Better yet, listen to one or two in a cop bar after putting a couple of beers away and see what they really think and do.

Sure they can. Just like they do in Hollywood. Where it would be a valuable skill. Now why exactly are they trained to pee on command for police purposes? comedic highlights.

No you miss the point. In fact this is very very sad. It is sad that people are so committed to a narrative that they will believe anything all as long as it conforms to what they want to believe. And so someone wants to sell the idea that the police in Ferguson are all so evil that they would intentionally desecrate a memorial and use their trained police peeing dogs to do so. And they would commit these unholy rights in the full view of the public in the sure knowledge that none of the many witnesses or reporters wandering around would see it and record it. And you want to get your knickers in a self righteous twist of holy rage. And it is fucking great for hits. Amen.

You’re saying that the narrative is incorrect.

So, which parts do you disagree with: that the police apparently ran the memorial over, that a police dog pissed on it, that it was apparently done under cover of night?

If these are untrue, please educate us.

Good freaking grief.

Yes, it’s “perfect,” all right, after they autotuned every note of her vocal.

Actually, it’s total crap. I listened to about 20 seconds of it.

I don’t think they’re using “perfect pop song” as a compliment. In the very same paragraph they say this:

Swift has made a song that’s unrelentingly catchy and upbeat. That doesn’t make “Shake It Off” bad, but it certainly makes it vapid.

Is this the Piss Thread?
No the Piss Thread is in 12A
A Piss thread isn’t just contradiction.
It can be.
No it can’t. A Piss Thread is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
No it isn’t.
Yes it is! It’s not just contradiction.
Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
Yes, but that’s not just saying ‘No it isn’t.’
Yes it is!
No it isn’t!

Unless of course if he is on fire. Which I can imagine is a common occurence due to pants conflagration via misrepresentation.

re: #1 Kragar

Are they really this fucking tone-deaf or do they honestly just hate the people they’re supposed to serve and protect?

Yes! The hate runs deep.

Eh, he knows what he’s doing.

I’m just waiting for the inevitable “I’m not a racist” claim.

He can’t be racist, because he has “black friends”.

That there’s a clueless cocktail of derp with a strong twist of dipshit. Good job, Pete.

And, once again I failed to scroll down before posting.
