Wednesday Night Jam: Nickel Creek Live at NPR

Nickel Creek was made to sing and play around a single microphone, so a Tiny Desk Concert seemed inevitable. All it took was a reunion tour — celebrating 25 years of Nickel Creek — to make it happen.

All three of the band’s remarkably talented core members have been to the Tiny Desk before. Chris Thile is a veteran, having played the Tiny Desk with friend and guitarist Michael Daves, then later in the same year with Yo-Yo Ma and others in a project known as Goat Rodeo. When The Decemberists performed a Tiny Desk Concert, Sara Watkins was there to play her fiddle and sing. Her brother, Sean Watkins, was also at the NPR offices earlier this year with the marvelous singer Tom Brosseau.

The trio, backed here by bassist Mark Schatz, has no equal. Nickel Creek has been doing this on and off since its members were kids, and what blows me away is the comfort and ease with which they navigate their instruments. That skill, and the creative force behind it, is a joy and a thrill to witness. —BOB BOILEN

Wow. Chris Thile’s solo in “The Elephant in the Corn” is a jaw-dropper.

Chris Thile actually MAKES A MISTAKE at 3:53. And Sara Watkins gives him the side eye.

He’s human after all.

Just realized I also have the Goat Rodeo tracks on my computer. I’ll have to give that another listen later.

One of the great things about being a sound guy for a band is getting to see the interaction between band members live. Other people don’t always pick up on the subtle clues, but you can tell when someone notices a mistake.

So did I at a club in Houston called Numbers. The place is a Houston legend; has hosted so many acts before they made it big. I think the gig I saw was a warmup act for the first Lollapalooza tour. The cost was $12 (!!!!!!!!), and I still remember it like it was last night.

How a Chicago bluegrass band rocked Nigeria’s music scene

Disclaimer: I took bluegrass lessons as a kid. So when my friend Ethan Zuckerman wrote a fantastic blog post recently about how and why a Chicago bluegrass quartet ended up doing a cover version of a Nigerian song called “Chop My Money,” I needed to investigate for myself.

I can’t stand the crap they have on the radio today. I love Tool, Portishead, Front242, Skinny Puppy, Massive attack, stuff like that. Then there’s the softer stuff, Tori Amos, Indigo girls, Sia. Oh, and I can’t forget the 80’s bands, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Oingo Boingo, etc. Those are just some of my favs.

I hear you. Yes, I’ve considered it, but never got around to writing the code. If I did something like that for comments I’d want to have some way of showing the comment if people wanted to see it anyway, so it’s not a simple thing.

It’s on the to-do list.

yep. Something like a spoiler tag that says “click to see really low rated and annoying/ignorant comment”.
Or something to that effect.

43 Charles Johnson  Aug 27, 2014 6:19:00pm

And the problem with hiding down-dinged comments is that other people might have quoted it by the time it gets hidden, so it would still be visible in their replies. It’s not a simple issue.

44 Charles Johnson  Aug 27, 2014 6:22:07pm

One way to solve it would be to do away with the “quote” feature. But that would be a big change.

Well, of course Chief Belmar thinks everything his department did was appropriate. And they’d probably do it all the same way again.

He doesn’t even recognize that he’s part of the problem.

Belmar added that the St. Louis County Police had a responsibility to mitigate the threat of “serious crimes” and “certain terrorist events.” In practice, though, he said the equipment is used in armed barricade situations and, occasionally, in executing search warrants. He said he never anticipated he would ever use it against demonstrators.

“I never envisioned a day in which we would see that type of equipment used against protesters. But I also never envisioned a day in 28 years that we’d see the kind of criminal activity spin out of peaceful demonstrations,” Belmar said.

Responding to questions from The Huffington Post and other reporters at St. Louis County Police headquarters, the chief said he had no regrets about some of the more aggressive tactics used in Ferguson this month, such as releasing tear gas on the crowds.

“Our choices were to rip, wade into the crowd with nightsticks and riot sticks. Like I said before, in my 28 years I’ve seen the damage they can do — they’re not temporary damage, sometimes those injuries are long-lasting,” Belmar said. “I felt like after 20 years of law enforcement experience — I’ve been tear-gassed perhaps two dozen times. It’s a chemical agent, it’s not pleasant, but at the end of the day there aren’t any long-lasting effects. So we’ve talked a lot about optics, the optics of nightsticks, dogs and other things like that.”

And yet, they brought out the dogs, and tear gassed people, and attacked and detained journalists covering events. So, tell me again about how the Department looked at the optics?

They never considered an option that didn’t involve putting the armored vehicles out there in the first place. Or the riot cops with the sniper rifles pointed at protesters. Or the riot cops who were aiming their guns at protesters for no cause.

But other than that, the county police did everything by the book.

Including producing a police report about the Brown shooting that includes all the pertinent details.

/just kidding - everyone knows that the county police have stonewalled on all the details and aren’t about to change their policies and procedures without federal intervention.

Those warnings from twitter and facebook are because they’re using HTTPS, and LGF doesn’t (can’t) on our main pages. When an HTTPS resource tries to access an HTTP resource, it throws an error to the console.

re: #44 Charles Johnson

One way to solve it would be to do away with the “quote” feature. But that would be a big change.

I just thought of what might be a perfect compromise, though it could be a nightmare to code - how about, after a comment receives over 10 downdings, the “reply” button remains, but the “quote” button disappears? At the same time the comment itself gets auto-spoilered, perhaps… (yes, I know that would leave previous quotes intact, but at least there wouldn’t be new ones)

It just breaks my heart to think about the little girl who accidentally killed her instructor with an Uzi. She trusted these competent looking adults to know what they were doing, and her parents were convinced it was safe. Now a man is dead and she will have to live with it all her life.

NEVER, EVER give an automatic or semi-automatic firearm to anyone who lacks the strength or experience to control the recoil, let alone to a small child. Loss of control on any one shot means that the next one could go anywhere, and loss of trigger control is all too likely when the shooter is startled by recoil. Novice shooters should always begin with manual action guns, preferably single shots.

What makes the Arizona shooting all the more amazing and tragic is that this is the second time in recent years that a child has killed someone while shooting an Uzi in a supervised environment. The child himself was the victim in the 2008 incident, after various fools allowed him to try to shoot a Micro-Uzi. The latter, of course, is harder to control than the standard version and is really a weapon for specialized professionals.

My gun culture was hijacked and I want it back. Acts of the most negligent do not define the rest of us gun owners.

No, Daniel, not every gun owner would give a full auto Uzi to a child, but the culture and system is bug fuck crazy to tolerate those who do, and it does tolerate them. The range where this happened has existed for years and is well known among shooters. It is not the only one.

To hit a similar level of negligence, one would have to stretch a bit. How about drunk driving school? (HT Onion) Open tryouts for the Blue Angels?
There are guns for the very young, not big caliber and not full auto. airguns, .22 maybe.

Just to illustrate the diff between what is proper instruction and what happened-How do you teach an experienced adult full auto? You use ten or 20 magazines. You as the instructor stand so close you can redirect the gun if needed. The first mag has two rounds. So does the second. Then 3 shots. Repeat until the 3 shots are all on the paper if not the exact middle. Then 5 rounds until that happens. See where I’m going?

Now everyone with a gun, or a range to run, or a training school trying to do the right thing has to live with the stain of that accident caused by negligence of the worst kind.

Ask 10 or 100 gun instructors certified by any of the organizations. or state authority about what happened. Contrast that with the “hold my beer while I do this” crowd.

The Uzi tragedies remind me of 7 year old Jessica Dubroff, the little girl who was killed in a hare-brained attempt to set an informal record for the youngest person to fly a plane coast to coast. That grotesque 1996 incident led Congress to intervene, passing a law that prohibited under-age persons from taking part in aviation competition and record setting.

The strength and basic insanity of the gun lobby will keep that from happening in response to the Uzi tragedies.

Horrified congress-person: “Hey, looks like there are people crazy enough to give machine guns to children. Maybe that should be against the law.”

Gun lobby: “TYRANNY! OVERREACH! MOLON LABE!”

I’d probably be fine in a sort of small space, as I’m not much of a collector (packrat), but with working at home, it’s nice to have a few different rooms to wander through when I’m avoiding work!

But think how easy it is to do spring cleaning in a space that small!

It Is Never About Race: A Continuing Series

First of all, what white person gets frightened enough in a WalMart to call a cop just because a black man has a pellet gun?

Everybody, because it’s not about race because it’s never about race.

Also, what cop gets frightened enough in a WalMart to draw down just because a black man has a pellet gun?

Most of them, because it’s not about race because it’s never about race.

Also what cop shoots to kill in a WalMart because a black man is holding a pellet gun?

This one, because it’s not about race because it’s never about race.

Oh, you and your logic an’ shit.

How about this:

Don’t let children fire automatic weapons? Is that so tough?

Aren’t you required to demonstrate that you have standing in order to have a court hear a lawsuit? If so, I doubt that Missouri courts will find that being a self-promoting racist fuckwad from Mississippi confers sufficient standing on Charles C. Johnson to bring this action.

re: #225 ausador

The slowdowns and outages have to do with the routers that direct internet traffic. Some older routers have a limit to the number of other routers to which they can direct traffic. When that limit is exceeded the router may slow down or stop directing traffic. A number of ISPs recently pushed out lists that exceeded the limit so… They didn’t do so arbitrarily, there are arrangements that compel making the lists as long as they have become. It will take a while to implement workarounds and upgrades. I’ve found that pinging (Google “ping” for an explanation. It’s easy to do.) an unreachable site will enable me to reach it.

I understand that he kinda has a point but he tries to make it with a sweeping generalization that just isn’t true. I am already sick and tired of the asinine wingnut non-sequitur arguments that issues like these are mutually exclusive.

It is a straw man argument at its worst, you care about Michael Brown being killed but you don’t care about inner city gang violence. You care about global warming but not about this nations strangling debt. You care about healthcare for illegal aliens but not about care and support for our veterans.

The wingnuts pull this fallacy out of their bag of tricks constantly, the last thing we need to do is start copying them. “You care about terrorist threats but don’t care about gun regulation efforts” is not the argument we should be trying to make.

Found a nice little app to test the light in my grow rack. Light Tester on Google Play Store. It uses the photo sensor of your gadget to tell exactly how much light it thinks you’re getting.

Getting about 1.6k Lum/Sqft or 16.6k Lux at the “floor” of that rack, or about 2.7k Lum/Sqft or 30k lux where the plants are in their pots (~3-5 inches up). I can’t move them much closer as the taller flower stems are already burning up when they get up to the tippy top of the rack.

The light gets significantly weaker the closer to the front edge of the rack you get, due to the first ~2 inches of the rack not having lights directly over it.

Either way, that’s… not great. The ICPS has a guide on light here. If I’m running 15k-30k lux that does put me in Intense Light, though, which is what I need for my Sundews and Asian Pitcher Plants and the like.

These T5H0 lamps are about 8 months old - it might be time to replace them. They’re supposed to last longer than this but nowadays I can actually look at my grow rack, when I first got these I couldn’t look directly in there. In addition the ends are starting to blacken up a bit.

They’ve been running 16 hrs a day 7 days a week since then, though, so… Probably time. Need to turn that down to say, 14 hours a day instead, I think. Some of my plants like the Butterworts appreciate seasonal cues sometimes.

Going to test outside tomorrow and see what the porch is like during midday sun.

I remember that show. I was working at a local radio station in Houston at the time which will remain nameless, and some of my co-workers went to that gig. I had never, ever cursed a job so much as I did that night.

OTOH, I saw NIN & Bowie here in Austin that same year. And last year I got to see them do an Austin City Limits taping. This was my view of the stage:

Only been to one nin show, and it’s perhaps his most famous one of all. Woodstock 94. When you look at the lineup that came before and after (Metallica, Aerosmith) his set, and you realize he blew them away, you get some sense of what he was about. It was primal and the energy took over the crowd.

I’ve seen video of his recent shows, whether it’s lights in the sky or torsion, and they are an audio and visual tour-de-force. I just haven’t had a chance to see him on his recent tours due to scheduling. That’ll have to change. His shows are still mind blowing.

How many adults hurt themselves when they fire weapons they are not accustomed to ever handling, all for the sake of claiming that they’ve fired them. Youtube has tons of videos showing all kinds of incidents where the recoil sends people flying.

But yeah, it’s your constitutional right to firearms. It’s also your obligation to be safe with them and not do stupid stuff, like putting automatic weapons in the hands of kids who don’t have the capacity or capability to handle, let alone fire them safely.

I blame movies and TV for showing gunfight scenes where the bad guy holds an Uzi in each hand, or any type of handgun in each hand.

I normally despise CNN, but there was an article over there about this story and one of the firearms guys they quoted made a good point:

“It’s always the supervision,” said Greg Danas, president of Massachusetts-based G&G Firearms. “But you also have gun enthusiasts running businesses where they place firearms in the hands of the uninformed, whether they’re 9-year-old kids who are not capable or adults. It all stems from gun enthusiasts running businesses that require a level of professionalism and education. The unexpected with firearms is something that’s only learned through years of being a trainer, not a gun enthusiast.”

There’s a lot of truth to that. The range where this happened is designed for gun tourism, letting inexperienced people fire all these high grade weapons if they just pay enough cash. Congressman Paul Ryan has thoughts—-

“Obamacare will collapse”

Another highly contentious, partisan issue Ryan addresses in the video above is healthcare. Recent reports show that Medicare spending growth has slowed. The Congressional Budget Office said the financial crisis and the turmoil in the economy were not the reason for the slowdown, although the CBO was not able to identify specific factors that did cause the slowdown.

Congressman Ryan believes the slowing growth in Medicare spending is due to a “temporary aberration” that will not change the eventual fate of Obamacare.

“I do believe that you’re seeing artificial price controls hold down costs for now, but what actuaries tell us is: a lot of businesses who are in the healthcare providing business will go bankrupt and then we’ll have fewer providers,” he says. “So, I think the healthcare law is going to collapse under its own weight.”

Ryan advocates what he calls a “patient-centered” system that offers more freedom of choice in healthcare than Obamacare.

finance.yahoo.com

Meanwhile, until we are blessed with congressman Paul Ryan’s “patient-centered system”, the unconstitutional Obamacare trainwreck destroying are libertays is helping more people who need it get mental healthcare—

The Affordable Care Act has paved the way for a vast expansion of mental health coverage in America, providing access for millions of people who were previously uninsured or whose policies did not include such coverage before. Under the law, mental health treatment is an “essential” benefit that must be covered by Medicaid and every private plan sold through the new online insurance marketplaces.

The need is widely viewed as great: Nearly one in five Americans has a diagnosable mental illness, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, but most get no treatment. If the law’s goal is met, advocates say, it will reduce not only personal suffering but also exorbitant economic costs, like the higher rate of general health problems among those with mental illnesses, and their lost productivity.

Another bad apple plucked from law enforcement. Law enforcement needs to better police itself. That means ridding itself of the Oathkeeper nuts, the racists, the corrupt, and the bad seeds.

I suspect (and this is just suspicion) but the racists and bad apples in law enforcement are a lot like the people who drink and drive. They’ve been doing it for a long time before they’re actually caught.

Those that were caught on tape like those in Ferguson have been doing this kind of thing for a very long time. It’s only the light of the protests and videos of the encounters that have shined a light on their misconduct.

“Gun tourism” is a very good, and very alarming term. The parents are probably pretty uninformed themselves or they wouldn’t let their children anywhere near these places. They probably assume this kind of business is a great deal more regulated than it really is, that the operators must have all kinds of certificates and licenses and approvals to even own machine guns let alone rent them to people. In fact, the class 3 license for a machine gun does not have a proficiency requirement and there is not a whole lot of regulation otherwise. There is no sanctioning body other than various voluntary associations, including the NRA. Anyone can set up a firing range if they can get past whatever local and zoning requirements might exist. Most of these deal with the size, location, and safety factors of the facility and have little or nothing to say about the competence of the owners.

Why are there flags for Iceland and the Czech Republic there?

Don’t know about Ireland, but I assume they might have had tourists from the Czech Republic in the past. People do own firearms here; the Czech Republic has some of the most liberal gun-ownership laws in Europe. I used to go duck hunting with my late father-in-law routinely - he was quite the outdoorsman, and people here do go hunting for wild boar and deer. People in rural villages are the most likely to own firearms, and it’s not hard to get one. You’ll need a firearms license to do it, and if you want to carry concealed, which is legal here, you’re gonna have to pass a proficiency test that’s the equivalent of what the cops go through here at the police academy, and you’ll need to score the same as a cop, as well as being able to field-strip and reassemble your handgun.

Yeah the gun fetish culture is really fucked up and then you combine that with attitudes apparently held by the instructor himself that only “Real men and women shoot”, you’ve got a recipe for tragedies like this to be common. Really, I too get wanting your kid to learn how to shoot for hunting and stuff like that especially if you’re a rural resident but you’ll never be able to convince me why a child should be handed an Uzi when that’s a weapon that quite frankly shouldn’t be allowed to be owned by a private adult let alone used by a child.

316 lawhawk  Aug 28, 2014 7:15:35am

re: #313 Lidane

Why was it necessary to even fire with live ammo? Wouldn’t blanks achieve the same purpose? She wasn’t about to start hitting targets. It was all about firing the gun.

Meanwhile, a NJ father whose young daughter is a competitive shooter had different advice - including limiting the number of rounds that could be fired at any time (why have 30 round clip, when 2-3 would do), and the “instructor” was in the wrong position - should have been hands over and directly above/behind the girl to prevent recoil.

Roberts said that when Shyanne does get the chance to shoot an automatic rifle, they’ll be following strict safety rules that Vacca clearly violates in the video.

First, Roberts said Vacca was standing to the side and slightly in front of the girl at the range, violating the “180-degree” rule in which instructors are required to stand behind the shooter and not within the 180 degrees in front of them.

He also should have been physically over top of her, and if not, at least hovering right above.

“What that would’ve done, as soon as she started to lose control, he could’ve immediately directed that weapon in a safe direction,” said Roberts.

He also said the automatic weapon should not have been fully loaded with a 30-round magazine. Whenever he starts out a student on a platform they’re new to handling, he starts out with one round, and then moves to two.

“You progress as you add rounds in increments,” said Roberts, noting if the girl in the accident had only three rounds, the magazine would’ve been empty before any could reach the instructor. “Absolutely no way would I ever allow, ‘Oh here’s a 30-round magazine, have fun. Especially with a novice, you have no idea what they’re capable of.”

But that’s exactly what these gun ranges do. They let anyone willing to pay a few bucks handle weapons for which they have no experience, and with instructors who aren’t licensed or trained as such and who have no idea of proper protocol other than collecting money from anyone willing to shell out for the privilege of firing these kinds of weapons.

We frankly have too many people in this country who value guns more than they do their fellow man. I hate to sound like a kumbaya my lord type but that just troubles me. I really do get why people want to own guns. My mom’s side of the family hunted. I get why people want to be armed in case an intruder breaks in. Hell I don’t begrudge someone who enjoys target shooting as a hobby but I just find myself troubled reading about people who own a small arsenal and whom are constantly adding to it. It’s a hoarding mentality. I really don’t think the Founders intended the 2nd amendment to be an excuse to gun hoard. And frankly while I am not advocating abolishing the second here, we do need to be aware that the second was written in a different time.

Speaking of machine guns, the World War I centenary continues apace. 100 years ago last Friday (August 22, 1914) , the French army suffered the worst single day’s casualties in its history with 27,000 (repeat, twenty-seven thousand) soldiers killed on that one day.
German casualties for the first 4 months of the war were over 600,000 killed, wounded, or missing.

Before the war there had been some debate in military circles about the real effectiveness of machine guns. They had been used with great success (ie slaughter) in colonial campaigns against hapless natives but some officers and analysts doubted that they would be of much use against disciplined troops. The first few days of the Great War ended that debate forever.

That poor little girl is going to have to live with this the rest of her life. I feel terrible for her but not at all for her idiot parents who thought it would be a great idea to teach their nine year old how to fire a military weapon.

Worse yet, her parents were recording her firing the gun. They thought it was cute and/or fun. They stupidly put their trust in an “instructor” who clearly had no goddamn idea what he was doing.

From the link:

Sam Scarmardo, who operates the outdoor range in Arizona where the instructor was killed, said Wednesday that the parents had signed waivers saying they understood the rules and were standing nearby, video-recording their daughter, when the accident happened.

“I have regret we let this child shoot, and I have regret that Charlie was killed in the incident,” Scarmardo said. He said he doesn’t know what went wrong, pointing out that Vacca was an Army veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pro tip: being a military veteran doesn’t automatically qualify someone to be a firearms instructor. Idiots. I’d ask if the gun range is going to learn anything from this experience, but I already know the answer.

Also, I have a lot of things to say about this bit, but I’ll settle for flipping a few desks instead:

Jace Zack, chief deputy for the Mohave County Attorney’s Office, said the instructor was probably the most criminally negligent person involved in the accident for having allowed the child to hold the gun without enough training.

The parents aren’t culpable,” Zack said. “They trusted the instructor to know what he was doing, and the girl could not possibly have comprehended the potential dangers involved.”

This is the problem. At what point do you look at someone who says he wants your kid to fire a machine gun and NOT think they’re insane? WTF.

Also, I have a lot of things to say about this bit, but I’ll settle for flipping a few desks instead:

This is the problem. At what point do you look at someone who says he wants your kid to fire a machine gun and NOT think they’re insane? WTF.

I suspect it’s going to be business as usual. Damn it though. It’s just so frustrating.

Would that be the gun humper lobby that is mysteriously silent all of a sudden?

One thing for sure. The NRA’s creative writing department must be having a tough time coming up with the proper response. That would be if there is a proper response.

Every national debate seems to turn on a one or two incidents that change a lot of minds. Are we seeing this Uzi/9-year-old the turning point in the gun debate?

I keep on hoping for a turning point but I am not optimistic. I’m deeply cynical about it all given the deep pockets groups like the NRA have and even more politicians they have under their thumbs.

I had noticed a strange thing going on with LGF a couple weeks back and now it is off the clock.

My Green Football that appears on the tabs is flickering big time today. I had noticed that a bit before, but it is really flashing at a five to ten flickers a second rate.

And today (right now) the stop loading “x” and the reload “arc” and the selector “hand” are all flashing at the same rapid rate.

It all seems to start after some time on the site, not right away. And once it does, it seems to mess with text entering.

I checked other tabs open and they are fine.

Anyone else ever have this occur?

I thought I’d mention it for Charles to consider. Gonna quit the site and come back to see if it clears.

Florida cops kill bystander, but charge suspect they were trying to shoot with her murder

A Florida man is facing charges of First Degree Murder after police in Orlando tried to shoot him but killed an innocent bystander instead.

Last week, officers were called to Vixen Bar to respond to reports that 23-year-old Kody Roach had discharged a weapon at the club.

According to an affidavit obtained by the Orlando Sentinel, a Taser was used on Roach when he was observed “pointing his right hand at the officers.” But the Taser failed to shock Roach because of his loose clothing.

And then, officers asserted, Roach reached inside of his waistband.

“In order to prevent an armed individual from causing harm to any members of the public or to any of the surrounding officers, Ofc. Sanguino discharges his firearm nine times striking Roach at least five times,” the affidavit said.

Officers later determined that Roach was holding an unloaded .40 caliber Ruger handgun.

I agree with you…but to a degree.

There is that old saying of the straw that broke the camels back.

To me situations add up and build up until you get to the point where people just say enough is enough. And that last straw can be something simple or lesser than the big things that have already been stacking up.

The other thing that might blow the lid off now is this happened to gun nuts at a gun nut shooting range. Sandy Hook happened to others. And I don’t say that to be flippant or deny the tragedy Sandy Hook was.

This sends a big message to the gun crowd, which is why the NRA may be having a hard time with how they are going to address it.

By the way, came back to the site, and the jittering and dancing icons are cool…at the moment.

And William Barnett-Lewis…you may be right. I think it does only happen in Chrome. I’ll keep an eye on that. I wonder what is up with Chrome? You’d think Google with their all their own coding, programming and tech these days would be better than this crap.

As usual, Colbert nails it:

“Some are rushing to judge this man as a violent, racist cop who gunned down an unarmed black teenager,” Colbert said. “But others are arguing that he’s a heroic police officer doing his job — by gunning down an unarmed black teenager.”

Also like some on Fox, including MediaBuzz host Howard Kurtz, Colbert said he thought all the media coverage is causing more harm than good in Ferguson. “It’s true. The presence of a camera clearly makes people behave recklessly because I don’t believe for a minute that Howie Kurtz would have floated the idea that journalists are to blame for the Ferguson violence if a camera wasn’t pointed at him,” Colbert said. “For his own safety, get this man off of television!”

Later, Colbert turned to the inevitable “national conversation on race” that will come out of this story. He wondered aloud why Michael Brown and other young African-Americans can’t be more like Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his supporters. “They were armed, they dared the cops to shoot them and nothing happened!” he said. “Just figure out whatever was different about them, and you’ll be fine.”

Which equals A LOT of dough
Estimated annual value of global criminal markets in the 2000′s
Cocaine: $88 billion USD
Opiates: $65 billion USD

By comparison, only $1 billion in criminal firearms markets.
That’s 153 times bigger than the criminal firearms trade.
- (And that’s only counting Cocaine and Opiates)

and you think that is a lot of money:

Trafficking in persons is a very lucrative business. This is illustrated by the most recent estimates published this spring by the International Labour Office which suggest that forced labour in the private economy alone generates US$ 150 billion in illegal profits per year. Two thirds of this figure (US$ 99 billion) comes from commercial sexual exploitation, while another US$ 51 billion are a result of forced economic exploitation, including domestic work, agriculture and other economic activities.

I hope he does add some of that biting wit to his interviews when he takes over late night. I don’t know how much of his wit is his or his writers, but I have a feeling a good portion of it is his own view on things.

And would it be cool to see him take on Hannity and O’Really and others in a straight up interview without the known shtick of Colbert Report.

Problem then might be no one will want to get on his show if he dices ‘em up too bad. I hope he finds the right mix.

A national Tea Party group hopes to annoy liberals by selling bumper stickers bearing the Cold War-era slogan “America: Love It Or Leave It.”

teaparty.net is protesting news that the Obama administration may sidestep Congress to draft an international climate change agreement by urging conservatives to antagonize Prius drivers.

The conservative group sent out a fundraising email urging members to “send those elected parasites packing in November,” reported the Washington Times.

“For the rest of the week, here is something you can do to annoy every Prius driver with an Obama sticker in the back window,” the group says. “For every donation over $3 this week, we have brought back a classic phrase to make it clear how you feel. Bumper stickers will not change the world, but everyone will know exactly how you feel.”

A body was found in Ein Kerem, and the family isn’t confirming or denying that the remains are those of a US yeshiva student who was studying in Jerusalem.

The announcement was made less than five hours before a planned press conference and prayer vigil at the Western Wall arranged by Sofer’s parents, Moshe and Chulda, who flew to Israel from Lakewood, New Jersey to aid in the search.

Desperate to find their son, Moshe offered a NIS 100,000 reward for information on his whereabouts on Tuesday.

Reached for comment Thursday regarding the veracity of growing reports that Sofer’s body was found in the Ein Kerem neighborhood near the Jerusalem Forest, a Sofer family spokesman said he would not confirm or deny the reports.

“We do not wish to make any comments at this time,” the spokesman said.

Moshe and Chulda Sofer had been updated by Asst.-Ch. Yossi Parienti of the Jerusalem Police on the manhunt on Wednesday.

He had gone missing after hiking in the area with a friend last week.

While they have yet to confirm that the remains are those of Sofer, police are investigating whether foul play was involved.

I heard an interview on CBC radio with the owner of the shooting range where the 9 year old was allowed to shoot in the fully automatic mode after firing one shot non-auto. Link to listen here, with a partial transcript.

Scarmardo [owner of the range] said his policy of allowing children 8 and older to fire guns under adult supervision and the watchful eye of an instructor is standard practice in the industry. The range’s policies are under review, he said.

As I recall, he said the age limit is determined by the insurer, who is affiliated with some shooting range association. I looked around a bit and all I found was an article where some flack said ranges set their own age limits.

Rule #5: “Force Leftists to Answer Questions. This is really just a corollary of Rule #4.” According to Shapiro, forcing the left to answer questions is like “trying to pin pudding to the wall - messy and near-impossible.” If Ben Shapiro can teach us how to pin pudding to a wall even some of the time, liberals have no hope.

Rule #6: “Do Not Get Distracted.” Just one page after the pudding analogy, Shapiro tells us that “Arguing with the left is like attempting to nail jello to the wall. It’s slippery and messy and a waste of resources.” If only he hadn’t gotten distracted.

It was winter when I was in Venice. Smelled great. I don’t go out at night much when I’m traveling alone, but I walked around at night in the fog in Venice. It was magical.

Have you run into Donna Leon’s Venice mysteries? She’s an American teacher who has lived there since the 80s. Taught my kid at the US airbase U Maryland extension.

Poor white people. Nothing worse than BARWW: Being Accused of Racism While White. It’s just as bad as real racism. Poor things.

You’ll like the cop’s wife, a communist contessa who teaches Henry James at the Italian university.

New post up at Stonekettle Station - Ass Backward Into The Unknown.

Love it. And he sums it up quite nicely:

The GOP is old and tired and bitter. They’re plumb fresh out of any new ideas and they’ve got no plan whatsoever. It’s just the same old obsessions, abortion, gays, guns, and Jesus. Bomb ‘em, bomb ‘em all!

They can’t even agree among themselves on the things they all agree on.

Now, you tell me, how are they going to run the country?

Look, I’m not saying the Democrats are great, but at least they’re going forward. Inch at a time and uphill all the way, kicking and clawing and howling at the moon - and that sure beats retreat any day of the week.

THIS. EVERY FUCKING WORD.

I’ve been saying this shit since I first voted in 1992. The Democrats aren’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re a goddamn sight better than the Republicans, who’d take us all back to the Dark Ages without a second thought.

OK—going to start reading there.

Jim Wright is one of the most cogent bloggers on our side nowadays. And he’s actually more of an essayist - he takes a while to make his point, methodically and sensibly. And he’s a really good writer, so even if he writes a long post, you don’t get bored.

Bonus: His resume makes it extremely difficult for conservatives to attack him. I’m so happy he didn’t hang it up when he was threatening to.

With all the wingnut whining about how bad America is, you’d think they’d be the first ones to leave it, ‘cause they sure as Hell don’t love it.

That would be my response too. Thanks.

Someone said something nasty in one of my Pages Posts and it got deleted before I had a chance to see it.

HA!

Thanks Charles.

Was it this page? If so, the comment wasn’t from pompous, patronizing peter (you can tell who made it by clicking the football avatar). I’m going to guess it was deleted due to being too colorful an expression of what fate should behall the puppy-kicker.

SO, I started the day with the intention of doing more research on Police Brutality and got sidetracked by info on the drug industry, law and stuff.

How is everyone?

Enjoying a nice non-humid relatively (80°) cool day. It’s great!

But, looks like we are gonna get stormed on starting late Saturday through Tuesday.

Yes, all Priuses have Obama stickers on them. EXCEPT for the three I’ve seen around here with Romney/Ryan and McCain/Palin stickers on them. Yes, it will just piss me off sooooo much. God these people are dumber than sandwich crumbs.

When the conservatives I know start that love it or leave it crap, I point out that I adore my kids, love them madly. However, when they fuck up, I don’t cheerlead them, I am critical of them. BECAUSE I AM A GOOD PARENT. I love my country, and I will be critical of shit that’s wrong BECAUSE I AM A GOOD CITIZEN. Not made up omgtheresablackguyinthewhitehouseweareallgoingtodie criticism, but legit things, like the condition of education, unfair labor practices, failing infrastructure, etc.

Dumber.Than.Sandwich.Crumbs.

I’m going to go pick up The Son for the long weekend. It’s a nice day for a ride into the country. BBL.

Why do you hate sandwich crumbs??? They come from a good home and do not hurt people.
