British PM David Cameron gave a speech yesterday and all I’ve heard wingnuts do is swoon over it. So I looked it up and I’m unimpressed. While he’s raising their version of the Terror Alert system and proposing yanking British citizenship from citizens who go to fight for ISIS, he’s not saying much else. He all but admitted that there’s no set strategy for dealing with ISIS, but said in diplomatic terms that one is being formed and it will include a “military response.”

In other words, he’s another Tony Blair, a great speech makers who in reality isn’t saying much.

Reuters: Drought leaves up to 2.81 mln hungry in Central America - U.N.

(Reuters) - A severe drought has ravaged crops in Central America and as many as 2.81 million people are struggling to feed themselves, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday, though the region’s coffee crop has been largely unscathed.

The drought, which is also affecting South America, has been particularly hard on the so-called “dry corridor” of Central America, which includes southern Guatemala, northern Honduras and western El Salvador.

In Paso Robles, north of where I live, the wine grape growers have free water, since nothing they pump out of the ground is metered. Too bad for the Little People who live in the area and have had their wells go dry because of this. The winos, as we call them, are Entitled! California water policy is an absolute mess. There’s no control over how much water is pumped out of private wells, meaning that they can take as much as they can. There are major bottled water companies that pump from California aquifers too, including Arrowhead, Aquafina and Dasani.

Add to that the Colorado River compact that figured out state and Mexico water usage during a particularly wet period in the region’s history, and you’ve got more people relying on a shrinking pot of water.

It’s a recipe for serious trouble throughout the region and the greater economy since we get so much food from California and there’s no clear plan on how to better manage the water resources that are a common good without first addressing all the overlapping entities that are sucking from the shrinking aquifers.

re: #60 Skip Intro

That’s interesting. I know of a shooting range that has run wells since the 1940’s and had to put in meters.

The California Water Wars

By the 1920s, so much water was diverted from the Owens Valley that agriculture became difficult. This led to the farmers trying to destroy the aqueduct in 1924. Los Angeles prevailed and kept the water flowing. By 1926, Owens Lake at the bottom of Owens Valley was completely dry due to water diversion.

Nothing’s gonna happen because the “free market” cares not for the difficulties of the locals, it cares about its profits. In its mind, a major drought in the region is a business opportunity in itself, because it can just sell water from other regions at a higher price.

I’ve seen so many who’ve convinced themselves that there were looting and rioting every night since Brown’s death, that what’s happened in Ferguson has not been a peaceful protest but an unruly mob.

They have to believe it’s about anything other than race, because if they acknowledge that it’s about race, then they have to admit that they’re backing the cops for no other reason than the victim isn’t white.

But would be okay if it were a tan suit?

In a word, no, but I’m flexible about wakes. My basic funereal look is based on William Burroughs. I’ve gone to way too many funerals in the past few years; the least I can do is dress up for my late, lamented friends and family.

Oooh, Earth Shoes.

Yuk. Earth Shoes are the devil’s brogans.

I remember when those were extremely popular in Tucson in the seventies, along with Carlos Castanada paperbacks.

re: #79 De Kolta Chair

Sartorially speaking, I’m generally a hedonist beatnik bum, but I draw the line at attending a funeral sans suit and tie.

The funerals that I’ve attended have been majority non-suit affairs, People dress well but a suit isn’t standard.

That said, my younger sister died unexpectedly this spring (we found out she’d been smoking four pack of cigarettes a day and we already knew she and her husband drank a lot). My sister’s husband showed up for his wife’s funeral wearing the sweatpants and a hoodie that he wore to every family event. I haven’t spoken with him since.

They are Of A Certain Time.

They won’t be back because apparently they aren’t good for one’s Achilles tendons.

To each their own, but your sister’s husband was just wrong.

Sorry to hear about your sister by the way. That has to have been tough. I have five sisters and two of them are heavy smokers.

Sorry for your loss.

Thanks. She was the sister that we’d kind of lost touch with and liked to get her way by pitting people against each other when she was around, but she was one day shy of her 54th birthday when she died. Way too young.

Yeah, that’s a great idea, said nobody with a brain, ever. (bolding mine)

Last year, legislators allocated $900,000 to help Floridians find affordable health care through a new state-backed website.

Six months after the launch of the state’s effort, called Florida Health Choices , just 30 people have signed up. Another seven plans were canceled either because consumers changed their minds or didn’t pay for services…

Florida Health Choices administrators acknowledge they are off to a slow start. Their strategy is to seek new products and partners, and find out more about what consumers want. They’re even open to selling insurance for pets if it lures customers

Florida Health Choices was the vision of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio back in 2008 when he was speaker of the state House. He believed the state should operate a website that allowed residents to purchase affordable insurance…

One of my sisters hasn’t been heard from in almost thirty years. She was busted doing something and was sent to a CCC camp, where she met a guy who was a member of some pre-Vatican II pseudo-Catholic cult and just vanished.

Robert Cohen has posted some of his photos from today in Ferguson.

Also, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has a twitter account to notify folks of the presence of cake in the newsroom. Not always their own newsroom. Not always cake.

You always hope people can improve, until they run out of time. Yes, way too young.

re: #63 De Kolta Chair

Good question, but that list shows the Senate could use Mo’ Udalls.

Oh yeah, I still got it.

Mo Udall was the first Presidential candidate I “fell in love” with, way back in 19 mumble mumble.

During his tenure in Congress, Udall was best-noted for his championing of environmental causes. He was also known for his devotion to campaign finance reform and the welfare of Native Americans. He authored the Alaska Lands Act of 1980, which doubled the size of the National Park System,[2] as well as legislation to protect archaeological finds, enacting civil service reform, legalizing Indian casinos, and providing for the safe disposal of radioactive waste.

Yeah. My kind of Democrat.

Yeah. My kind of Democrat.

I interviewed Mo a couple of times for my high school paper. He was a bit too conservative for me, but he was very honest. There was no bullshit about Mo. What you saw was what you got. And he had a great sense of humor. I also met his brother Stewart a few times at fundraising parties, and he was also something else. Stu introduced me to governor Bruce Babbitt, who was yet another interesting Arizona liberal with a healthy sense of humor.
