When I think about ‘sex’ and ‘conservatives’, I think ‘dysfunction’ and ‘misogyny’.

Nothing says raw sexual power like forced pregnancy. But I don’t know anyone who yearns for that.

Definitely serious. This is how Kurt Schlichter always talks.

I think not.

Ian McKellan has more sex appeal in his little finger than the entire wingnut assemblage. As a matter of fact, if by some twist of fate, he were to tell me that he considered me a handsome man, I’d probably start giggling like a little schoolgirl.

Take that, wingnuts!

Weirdly, I haved never, ever made a political assessment on the basis of fuckability.

I will never stop being confused by statements about “we have all the attractive people, they’re the ugly ones.”

I mean, if you’re using “would I fuck them” as your measuring stick for politicans and pundits, you’re using “would I fuck it” as your measure for single-serving microwaveable TV dinners.

I’m just now getting around to watching the “Cosmos” reboot with Neil deGrasse Tyson. I had been kinda resisting it because I saw the original series when I was a young whippersnapper, and I thought it would be a pale shadow at best. Culturally, we seem to be stuck in a cycle of remaking classics, and then “rebooting” the remakes, and remaking the reboots, which then get remade and rebooted. I was prepared to be underwhelmed. But in the end, it turns out that it’s a really good show.

A few months ago, I was about to set out, when I discovered my phone was completely discharged. My first thought was “Oh, man! Now I can’t go!”

My second thought was, “What did I do before cell phones? I rode.”

I rode.

True story:
MrBWS had a four-day weekend (no pay, but after working five-tens all summer, he didn’t care).
He spent all the weekend loafing, reading and watching the teevee (he doesn’t have teevee during the week, so it’s a treat).
Anyhoo…
He was getting ready to pack up and leave this afternoon but first went out to deal with barn chores and found out that the electric was out in the shop (we had horrendous storms pass through here overnight).
I’m sitting here minding my own business at the computer while he tried to figure out WTF is going on.
Suddenly, there’s a huge cracking snap noise and flame come flying out of one of the breakers in the circuit box. (That’ll wake ya up!)
Long story short…took him five hours to figure out where the problem was (the electric line from the pump house to the shop was damaged), replace the line and the now toasted breaker.
AND he missed out on the most delicious Moroccan chicken I made (but I packed it up for him to take with).
Oh, and sexy is the (union) person who can fix stuff like that on a holiday.

Happy Labor Day!

Habitat headquarters (Americus GA) used to give Alaska Habitat a ration of crap because their designs included attached garage space. That violated the ‘simple, decent’ standard. Alaska finally convinced them making cars warm up for 20 min was an ecological and economic brainfart.

There were electrical outlets all over Alaska, parking lots, you name it. When you got out, you plugged your extension cord into one of those outlets, and even at -40 the next morning car would fire up on the first crank and start blowing warm air out of the vents. If you didn’t have it hooked up, about the only thing you could do would be tow it to a garage (or the hanger) and let it sit for 24-48 hours to warm back up.

Most of the parking in Minneapolis and St. Paul is in covered garages. I was incredibly thankful for this when I still drove my diesel Rabbit. True, it’s still mostly open to the air and thus would get below freezing, but it wasn’t nearly as cold as parking outside and I never had troubles getting the old girl cranked up in the afternoons to come home.

Man. This crackpot in the previous thread is giving me a migraine. Why are all the wingnuts so freaking dense, and in love with idiotic conspiracy theories?

It’s an interesting conundrum: Are wingnuts more susceptible to conspiracy theories, or are conspiracy theorists more susceptible to becoming wingnuts?

Wingnuts have a more receptive public audience, are essentially bullies, and therefore are less afraid to speak out.

re: #234 thedopefishlives

Most of the parking in Minneapolis and St. Paul is in covered garages. I was incredibly thankful for this when I still drove my diesel Rabbit. True, it’s still mostly open to the air and thus would get below freezing, but it wasn’t nearly as cold as parking outside and I never had troubles getting the old girl cranked up in the afternoons to come home.

Word. When I moved into my house it was the first time I’d ever had a garage. It’s not heated but it’s SO much better than parking outside. I’ve never had trouble starting the car in the morning in the winter. I used to worry about it more after a day of sitting in the office parking lot.

The people who built my house apparently made a pass at insulating the garage, perhaps with an eye toward heating it. It was never finished.

It’s pure BS, especially given how thoroughly refuted the story has been. Hell, even if Darin Wilson is in hiding, if he had suffered such an injury it would not be hard to take and release to the press a photo of his face providing proof of that injury.

Heck, when a NYPD officer is involved in an incident and is injured, they will generally give some indication of the kinds of injuries sustained.

304 wrenchwench  Sep 1, 2014 5:44:13pm

Another study agrees:

People who avoid carbohydrates and eat more fat, even saturated fat, lose more body fat and have fewer cardiovascular risks than people who follow the low-fat diet that health authorities have favored for decades, a major new study shows.

The findings are unlikely to be the final salvo in what has been a long and often contentious debate about what foods are best to eat for weight loss and overall health. The notion that dietary fat is harmful, particularly saturated fat, arose decades ago from comparisons of disease rates among large national populations.

But more recent clinical studies in which individuals and their diets were assessed over time have produced a more complex picture. Some have provided strong evidence that people can sharply reduce their heart disease risk by eating fewer carbohydrates and more dietary fat, with the exception of trans fats. The new findings suggest that this strategy more effectively reduces body fat and also lowers overall weight.

If you are looking for a way to spend your hard-earned Bitcoin, take a gander at BitMags.com. bitmags.com is a new website that claims to be the “the first and only escrow-enabled Bitcoin firearms auction website where users can buy and sell guns and related items for Bitcoin.”

According to the site’s FAQ, Bitcoin is the only currency allowed. It will be interesting to see if there are enough Bitcoin users who want to buy & sell firearms online to support the BitMags auction site. At the time of this writing, there appear to be less than 20 auctions currently happening on the site.

Yeah, right. Middle class folks have empty refrigerators. I grew up in a middle class family. Our refrigerator was never empty.

Well, I’ll be honest: We’ve had an empty refrigerator fairly regularly. But that’s because Mrs. Fish doesn’t always go shopping on a regular schedule, so sometimes it gets a bit bare in there. Wanna know what the big difference is? We have a FREEZER. We can store all sorts of stuff (mostly meat, at the moment) that we otherwise would have had to buy on a paycheck-to-paycheck basis. That’s a middle-class luxury right there.

re: #310 Gus

I grew up very low middle class but am upper middle class (~10% now). When I was a kid, my did would not buy food until the day we were going to eat it. They couldn’t afford for me to grab a can of green beans, throw them into a bowl, and eat them because I was hungry.

314 thedopefishlives  Sep 1, 2014 5:52:30pm

For me, being poor is having to tell my wife, “If I lose my job, I have to be back at work within 2 weeks or we’ll be out on the street.” Being middle-class is being able to tell her, “We’ll have enough food to last, I have cash in a savings account to cover the bills, and we don’t have to worry about our cars breaking down or our roof collapsing.”

316 The War TARDIS  Sep 1, 2014 5:53:16pm

Sorry for being weird. I am having some other strains here.

The biggest one is job. Namely, I need another one, so I can save up money to go to Iran in January. Also one that is closer. But I have been interviewed in 10 different places, and heard back from none. I also need another job so I will be able to take a few more classes at OU. My mom’s grandparents said they would help with that, but I need to be better financially before that.

Also, the place I do work tends to have mean customers, and combined with some about of loneliness, it is causing frequent anxiety/panic attacks (according to my supervisor). I will run my hand through my hair as a nervous habit, and I will sometimes lose feeling in my left hand. Or I’ll feel like my torso is being squeezed, or even feel like something is grabbing and squeezing my heart. I suffer from chronic headaches these days.

I’ll confess my refrigerator looks like that middle class fridge, but it’s because I’m a single guy who has dozens of great pick-up restaurants nearby, a grocery store on my route home from work, and I never really learned to like to cook. I have the luxury of not having to go to the warehouse grocery store and stock up on cheap junk (although a snowstorm would have me subsisting on Cheerios and peanut butter sandwiches for a couple of days).

Tanfield Valley

Excavations in 2012 led by Patricia Sutherland, adjunct professor of archaeology at Memorial University in Newfoundland found evidence of medieval Norse textiles, masonry, and metallurgy. Pelts from Old World rats have also been discovered.[2] However, the Canadian government fired Sutherland in 2012 and prevented her from accessing her work because it didn’t fit with the government’s agenda for historical research, which was changed to focus more on British history; as of 2014, she has not been able to continue her research.[3] The CBC show The Fifth Estate featured the story in a January 2014 documentary titled The Silence of the Labs.

When we lived in St Paul the house we rented did not have a garage. My dad was the morning man on a local radio station and had to be at the station well before 6am. Every night during the winter he put a blanket on the hod of the car ad would go out and start the car about 2:30am. We had a 1961 Chevy Biscayne. Good times.

Just joking, since I actually find someone using a character from Gone With The Wind as a ‘yellow flag’. The book is quite racist (the movie less so) and affection for the story can sometimes (but not always) be a sign of racism.

If they did a remake of “West Side Story” today, the Jets would totally be a bunch of white racists. They were that even back in the day, it was just not so obvious.

It’s more complicated now. There’s black gangs, Hispanic gangs, white gangs, and multiracial gangs. You can have a gang war between any two of them, and sometimes a scrum with more than two.

Some of the best police work of modern times has been when Boston managed to negotiate a cease fire in a gang war. Neither warring party could trust the other, but the Boston PD was able to not just pose as, but be, a neutral third party that could to some extent enforce the terms of the peace agreement that was eventually reached. The murder rate in Boston dropped sharply and it’s stayed down.

90 weight is THE thing for the older Harley Davidsons.

Earlier tonight I had to run to the gas station and saw a couple of H-D’s outside. One was a fairly common modern Softail type of bike, though it did have ape hanger handle bars. The other was much more hard core.

Panhead. Kickstart only. Single FL seat. Hard tail. Ape hangers. Straight pipe exhaust. Black paint. Toolbag on the front that really has tools in it. Dude riding it looked the part as did his girlfriend riding the softail by herself.

After so many retirees on their new $15,000 HDs or Goldwings up here in tourist land, it was rather refreshing to see someone so old school. No kiddy bikes here, just old American iron that’s as obsolete as the old Triumphs I like. Yet it’s still banging away with that unmistakable V-twin sound.

I asked to take a picture of the bike because, as I told him, it’s been a long time since I saw a bike that old school in the wild. He was cool with it so I snapped a couple of shots with the camera i had with - my Canon 7 rangefinder. A manual focus camera from 1959 with a 50mm lens & BW film was just about as perfect a camera for the moment as was possible.

There’s a poem here somewhere, perhaps even a sonnet. I’ll have to ponder it over some whiskey and listen to a little Blue Oyster Cult.

401 Dark_Falcon  Sep 1, 2014 7:48:35pm

But now I’ve got something I need to post. Those living in the Austin, TX area should pay special attention:

Domestic Extremists Suckered Youngsters Into Gathering Intel on Police Officers

FBI suspects ‘sovereign citizens’ sent students to find out where cops live

Sovereign citizens groups are scary. For police officers, they’re violent extremists. Now at least one group of sovereign citizens duped young people into collecting the addresses of police officers and other first responders in Austin, Texas.

An FBI alert from the bureau’s San Antonio Division—obtained this month by the non-profit Web site Public Intelligence—details the creepy scheme.

Through late July of last year, small teams of “young individuals” combed through neighborhoods in Austin knocking on doors, according to the alert. When someone answered, the canvassers explained they worked for a fundraising group that helps students master public speaking.

As part of their training—the teams explained—they needed to learn about the professions of the people they spoke with.

The canvassers were then awarded points based on the job of the person they talked to. Different jobs were worth different points. The kids carried yellow note cards that referenced the 15 jobs worth points and their value. The list included professions such as nurse, doctor and firefighter.

Police officers were worth 2,000 points, the highest value.

In exchange for points, the organizers promised cash prizes and scholarships. More cops and firefighters meant more money.

It’s healthy to criticize police abuses, but these assholes don’t want to do that: They want to attack and intimidate law enforcement in fulfillment of their anarchist fantasies.

Eisenhower forced the people of the town to see what they had been averting their eyes from. The loss of self-deception induced guilt so powerful in the mayor he killed himself.

There was no self deception, they all knew.

THIRTEEN years ago, researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum began the grim task of documenting all the ghettos, slave labor sites, concentration camps and killing factories that the Nazis set up throughout Europe.

What they have found so far has shocked even scholars steeped in the history of the Holocaust.

The researchers have cataloged some 42,500 Nazi ghettos and camps throughout Europe, spanning German-controlled areas from France to Russia and Germany itself, during Hitler’s reign of brutality from 1933 to 1945.

The figure is so staggering that even fellow Holocaust scholars had to make sure they had heard it correctly when the lead researchers previewed their findings at an academic forum in late January at the German Historical Institute in Washington.

“You literally could not go anywhere in Germany without running into forced labor camps, P.O.W. camps, concentration camps,” he said. “They were everywhere.”

What they lost was the pretense of self deception.

150 year anniversary milestones of the American Civil War are passing. 100 year anniversary milestones of The Great War have started passing. Now we are 75 years removed from World War II. Pondering that, I do come to a realization that humans these days are the most peaceful humans that existed. Sure, there’s atrocity, starvation, places like Syria and northern Iraq and North Korea. He wasn’t born mega-mega-limos&yachts rich, but his family was quite well off. He attended the most exclusive, expensive private school in Seattle; his mom arranged a rummage sale (you know rich people’s “rummage” is a bit nicer than middle-class rummage) to buy the school state-of-the-art computer gear, and blocks of time on the UofW mainframe, because her little boy was interested in computers.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen were 2 of the 4 kids in the computer club at that school; they had 20 hours a week on the most advanced computers in the country, every week, from 7th grade until they finished high school.

That tore the German nation down.
We saw the cattle cars it’s true,
And maybe they carried a Jew or two.
They woke us up as they rattled through,
But what did you expect me to do?

We didn’t know at all
We didn’t see a thing
You can’t hold us to blame
What could we do
It was a terrible shame
But we can’t bear the blame
Oh no, not us, we didn’t know.

The raw sexual power of Louie Gohmert!
The raw sexual power of Scott Walker!
The raw sexual power of Chris Christie!
The raw sexual power of Rick Santorum!
The raw sexual power of Bobby Jindal!
The raw sexual power of Eric Cantor!
The raw sexual power of Rand Paul!

Whew. I don’t know about y’all, but I need a shower.

That sounds like a satanic chant.

A lot of times it’s less than 140 characters.

Heretic!

Seriously though I usually have to struggle to fit whatever I’m trying to convey to the limit.

Sucks trying to RT me. :p

Though to come back to what we were talking about this morning, Bill Gates has less to repent for than did Andrew Carnegie.

Just saw this reply. He may not have killed people to keep his company on top but what he did to the technological ecosystem was pretty damn bad. I remember the days of “DOS isn’t done till Lotus won’t run.” and the games played to break OS/2 back when Windows 3.11 was an everlasting nightmare. No he doesn’t have, literally, the kind of repentance that Andrew needed to make but William Henry has his own need to light a few candles…

And those people make more money working for Microsoft than they otherwise would. Moreover, they aren’t subject to gross mistreatment the way factory labor often is in Asian nations. I therefore do not consider them exploited.

Ahah, I see you don’t know about shocky monkey!

You gotta be joking!

I hate to make a general statement, but the very few men I dated who were politically conservative weren’t exactly Mr. Excitement and were waaay too “buttoned down”. Or they were “gropers”.

Mmmm, sorry, but all the pigs I used to date were all over the place, politically; no agreement from me that it’s just conservatives (this time).

Someone must have dropped their small intestines.

We’re all going to feel horrible when it turns out it’s a colostomy bag (Honestly, that was my first thought).

re: #138 Dr Lizardo

See, Benny there is going for ‘intensity’, but frankly, he’s doing it wrong.

This is ‘intensity’.

What Ben Shapiro’s doing looks more like Derek Zoolander’s “Blue Steel”.

Sorry, I have kids. That’s the face of a kid who’s been told he has to do his homework BEFORE he plays his video games.

Another odd other bit of history today…

One hundred years ago today, Sept 1, 1914, Martha, the last passenger pigeon, died at the Cincinnati Zoo.

“Her body was frozen into a block of ice and sent to the Smithsonian Institution, where it was skinned, dissected, photographed and mounted.[97] Currently, Martha is in the museum’s archived collection and not on display.[28][98] A memorial statue of Martha stands on the grounds of the Cincinnati Zoo”

en.wikipedia.org

I know this is a dead thread, but I thought I’d point out that Martha is currently on display in a temporary exhibit called Once There Were Billions that will be open until next October.
