Warhammer 40K has been around a long time. When I worked on the help desk in the early ’00s, a guy used to bring in his miniatures and paint on them while answering calls. (I used to crochet and do embroidery. To each his own.)

I do get the satisfaction he will be in hell when he passes one, just like Bin Laden, Saddam, among others.

Putin is responsible for a lot of death. Thousands upon thousands in Chechnya, and elsewhere. He, for me at least, belongs to the same bracket of evil as Bin Laden (Who invested a large amount of money in the radicals in Algeria in the 90’s. The Algerian Civil War resulted of about 150k people. Chechnya has 80k, but there are other wars and murders across Russia. I expect the number of dead from these two monsters to be similar.

Depending on your age you might not remember just how tense the cold war really got at times. People digging bomb shelters, drills for the outbreak of nuclear war in school, the Cuban missile crisis?

Many of us grew up almost convinced by our parents, the media, and all other available information (no internet then) that nuclear holocaust would happen “any time now.”

This thing in Ukraine? This is nothing but a tiny skirmish in the possible new cold war if Putin continues his expansionist aims. I’d compare it to when Russia supported Vietnam against us, or perhaps when they crushed the Prague spring movement would be more apt.

Not trying to sound cavalier, just trying to put things into perspective.

OMFG!!!

The African Dodger, also known as “Hit the n***** Baby” or “Hit the Coon” was as commonplace in local fairs, carnivals, and circuses as Ferris wheels and roller coasters are today. The purpose of the game was to hit the target with a ball-with one of your three throws-and win a prize. It sounds like a common carnival target game, but there was one unsettling part of the game, namely, the game’s target was a real live human being, a “negro” human being. In St. Louis in 1913, it was reported that carnival organizers were “unable for hours today to secure an ‘African Dodger’ who would allow baseballs to be thrown at his cranium at the usual rate of three for 5 cents;” the reason was that future Hall of Fame fastball pitcher Walter Johnson was rumored to be at the fair (“Don’t Want”, 1913). The game was so popular nationwide that newspapers mentioned the African Dodger game along with trained animals, illusionists, penny arcades, merry-go-rounds and magic shows in the list of a carnival’s attractions. Dodgers made headlines when they were seriously and horrifically injured-otherwise, they were nameless victims.

The African Dodger game was widespread in American society, in every part of the country. If you could not make it to the fair, you could purchase for $.69 an African Dodger table game, which featured a caricatured black face poking through a canvas reading “Hit the Dodger! Knock Him Out! Every Time You Hit Sambo The Bell Rings” (“Bloomingdales”, 1893).

One response to objections to the brutality of the African dodger game was to summon authorities to provide “scientific” findings on the topic. A short article in The Wayne County Democrat cited “authorities on anthropology” who “state that the negro has a very heavy and massive cranium constituting a bony arch of great resisting power. One scientist refers to the ‘common habit of negroes, of both sexes in butting like rams’[which]…indicates that a negro’s head bones have defensive strength unknown in the Caucasian race.” The newspaper assures its readers that the dodger doesn’t mind. “He seems cheerful about it.” The players of the game, the ones who throw the ball, are just men with a “man’s desire to display his powers”, particularly in front of “women friends.” The article finally concludes that until there is evidence that shows “fractured skulls or brain contusions” or until the dodger takes issue himself, the game will continue. A final warning is provided to the dodger who may be considering a new line of work that “He might regret to lose a daily wage that comes with less effort than manual labor” (“The Black Dodger”, 1913).

When legislation was presented in 1915 to ban some forms of the game at Coney Island, the headline read: BAN ON “BONEHEAD” HITS. The proposed ban was framed as “depressing news” for those who may be unable to participate in the “soothing exercise of hitting with a baseball the head of an ‘Ethiopian’ as it protrudes from a hole in a canvas sheet.” But don’t just feel sorry for the players, understand that “many persons who have no more profitable use for their heads will join the army of the unemployed” if the bill is passed and Africans are no longer allowed to dodge (“Ban”, 1915).

Russia suffered the worst of any country during WWII, after they war they erected buffer states between themselves and the West and militarized them heavily to ensure it never happened again.

46 years later in 1991 the “Soviet Union” collapsed but those buffer states remained, and still were aligned with Moscow.

Now an independent Ukraine which had the Russian’s only major “Ice free” naval base in Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula overthrew its pro-Moscow government and replaced it with a pro-western one. The new government wants to join Nato in support of the western alliance against Russia.

Can you see why maybe the Russians don’t like that idea?

We really are partially at fault in this for encouraging the insane NeoCon agenda of converting all the former soviet block states to Western allies. That, and erecting European missile defenses against Russia should have slowed to a glacial pace after Bush left office.

Nothing like kicking someone while they are down to make them want to get back up and punch your lights out.

(How would we react if Canada or Mexico signed a common defense pact with Russia against the United States?)

Here is the conclusion from a recent article by John Dean, yes that John Dean, on the Perry indictment:

To figure out what is really happening in Texas, I spoke with a couple well-connected attorneys in Texas (one of whom frequently writes about legal matters, and had taken a close look at these proceedings). The insider view appears to be that this prosecution is anything but a partisan overreach, as balanced accounts report. The special prosecutor, Michael McCrum, is a careful, non-political and experienced criminal law attorney, who was selected by a Republican judge. McCrum appears very straight talking, not the type to risk his career with a worthless case.

According to knowledgeable Texas criminal lawyers (who have spoken with current and retired Texas judges), the first count of the indictment will be more difficult, but not impossible, to sustain because it is untested. So the first count will involve legal issues while the second count will involve factual issues, and if—as many believe the situation—the prosecutor shows past efforts by Perry to coerce Ms. Lehmberg, he will be convicted.

In brief, while Perry may play his indictment politically, the prosecutor cannot do that. The only person who may have abused his power is Governor Perry, for Special Prosecutor McCrum is doing it by the book. It will be Texas judges—and possibly a jury—not law professors and political pundits who decide this matter.

Speaking of the Russians, apparently Putin’s government is cracking down on some of the internet pirate sites over there. It appears the music server I’ve used often here is being forced to delete most of their database. There was a blurb I found on some news site which I can’t find now, which discussed this, but I suspect it’s all part of the Putin gov’t plan to be stricter on what they allow on internet sites. Some of these music places were very open with forums and whatnot, and like internet forums everywhere the about of liberty taken by some posters probably irked some of the rulers.

Nevertheless, the internet is vast:

This frightens me:

Putin Threatens Nuclear War Over Ukraine

After the breakup of the USSR, the Ukraine gained the fifth-largest nuclear force in the world. They disarmed, and in exchange, the West offered Ukraine a guarantee that it would help defend their territorial integrity.

Since we have failed to honor that part of the agreement, it would only be fair if we gave them their nukes back.

55 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)  Sep 2, 2014 1:23:29am

re: #46 ausador

On top of that, the collapse of the USSR left a lot of issues unsettled, like the division of resources and infrastructure, or the status of the Crimea, which was historically part of Russia but transferred to the Ukrainian SSR mostly for administrative purposes.

And the status of millions of Russians living beyond the borders of the Russian Federation. They were once privileged minorities with preferred access to jobs, education and upward mobility. Now they often find themselves subject to discrimination.

Now Putin is settling those issues to Russia’s advantage, something that was not possible in 1991.

56 goddamnedfrank  Sep 2, 2014 1:46:14am

After being on a diet for about three months, limiting myself to around 1950 or so food calories per day, I find it really easy and haven’t been at all tempted to cheat. I’ve lost around 30 lbs or so and am about halfway to what I consider my realistic goal weight, my ideal weight is probably another 10 to 15 lbs down from that. I do some light exercise and take one or two 3 mile walks a day, nothing to brag about, my entire game plan has pretty much boiled down to calories in vs. calories out. I’m not watching carbs or fat and not eating any kind of special diet beyond counting calories. Also I drink water, lots of water, because that suppresses hunger and keeps the liver burning fat, or so I’m told.

So I started wondering how much the average American consumes, and was shocked - 3770 calories per day. No wonder we’re experiencing an epidemic of obesity, and all the health effects that go along with it, hardly anybody stays active enough to regularly eat that much without gaining weight.

Normally I totally hate people who type posts like this, all about the supposedly awesome goddamned bullshit healthy thing they’re doing, like it should matter to anybody else … and it shouldn’t. Really, it shouldn’t at all. I’m not here to fat shame people or motivate anybody or anything. You.are.fucking.beautiful.

But I have to say, look at that list, look at those poor bastards in Eritrea and the DRC getting by on an average of 1590 calories a day. That is actually below the UN minimum recommended for any adult anywhere and well below the amount the average even slightly active American would need to maintain weight. That’s kind of messed up.

57 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)  Sep 2, 2014 1:50:44am

Americans have some real irrational obsessions about orifices and anything that goes in or comes out of them.

Diet is just part of it all. Adults should be free to make their own food choices, all we can hope to do is inform them of what they are stuffing into themselves.

I do not know where the quote comes from but it goes something like: “We have a health care industry that is not concerned with food, and a food industry that is not concerned with health.”

President Obama was in town and gave a speech at Laborfest.

President Obama stresses economic gains in Milwaukee speech

President Barack Obama came to Milwaukee’s Laborfest on Monday to talk up an improving economy, push Congress to boost the minimum wage and excite his labor base heading into the fall midterm elections.

“There is no denying a simple truth — America deserves a raise,” Obama told thousands of labor supporters gathered at the Miller Lite Oasis at Maier Festival Park.

In calling on Congress to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour, Obama set up a sharp contrast with congressional Republicans, who say a boost in the minimum wage will lead to job loss.

This was an official visit, complete with the playing of “Hail to the Chief” when the president walked out on the stage. Yet Obama’s appearance was filled with political overtones, as Labor Day marks the start of the fall campaign season.

Yeah. Fuck Journal Sentinel who recklessly endorsed Walker twice for Governor and nary a bad word when he was County Executive. Bad shit happening here. Too obvious, but still invisible.

I’ve been trying to lose weight for the past couple weeks too, haven’t had much success so far, but part of my problem is that it’s hard for me to do any meaningful exercise between work (which is mostly sedentary) and taking classes, although working around on campus should help over time.

I’ve also cut back on what I eat, but since I am a type 1 diabetic, I had to play around with my insulin injection levels which took a little while to get right (a diet isn’t really effective if you have to constantly eat something because your blood sugar is low).

I’m 215-220 right now, and I need to lose at least 20 pounds or so, 30 would be ideal.

Lawyer Faces ‘Severe’ Actions After Sending Company-Wide Email Calling AIDS The ‘Gay Plague’

Walter Kubitz, a senior lawyer at Becker & Poliakoff, was angry that a federal court recently found Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional, as he doesn’t think there’s a “shred of historical evidence that [the Florida Constitution] … was ever intended to legitimize homosexuality.”

Citing what he labeled “the gay plague of AIDS” as an example of “reckless trashing of morality,” Kubitz sent this email chock full of Bible quotes to everyone at the firm.

83 lawhawk  Sep 2, 2014 6:10:36am

I’m shocked. Shocked that Rep. Roorda, who’s been one of Wilson’s boosters has a shady background that only now is getting more attention.

Roorda was the same representative who introduced legislation shielding the name of police officers from public scrutiny in case of officer-involved shootings (the legislation was introduced but never advanced and was withdrawn), and he’s one of the named officers of Shield of Hope, which has raised a bunch of money through a GoFundMe for Wilson.

Adding to the mess in Ferguson, the mayor doesn’t have direct hire/fire power over city officials, like the police chief. Instead, that power resides with the city manager (that’s a structure similar to that in many towns around the country). But the mayor of Ferguson says he’ll do what he can to effectuate change. Why it took the shooting of an unarmed black man and days of protests for action is what people really need to look at. It’s reactionary. There was no interest in doing anything until things got out of hand.

84 lawhawk  Sep 2, 2014 6:24:29am

The RWNJs claim Obama doesn’t have a strategy and is weak on terrorism.

This is weak on terror?

Airstrikes against Somalia’s al Shabaab, potentially killing the group’s leader and top deputies. This group has been linked to the devastating terror attack on Westgate Mall in Kenya, with 67 dead and 200+ wounded.

That’s after ongoing airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq, and continuing UAV strikes against targets of opportunity in places like Yemen.

Far from being weak on terrorism, Obama’s doing what needs to be done, with a lighter footprint that is afforded by the use of UAVs and carrier-launched airstrikes.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air… .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Florida Republicans had a great idea: Instead of expanding Medicaid under the socialist tyranny of Obamacare, they’d let the Free Market show off what it could do.

So they spent $900,000 to build a website that would allow Floridians to buy private health insurance plans from participating companies. Competition would surely lead everyone to a terrific deal! And in the six months since Florida Health Choices (floridahealthchoices.net) went online, it has proven to be a huge success, signing up 30 people, which is almost as many as the 984,000 Floridians who decided to just go with the regular socialist Obamacare options instead. Expanding Medicaid, on the other hand, would have only brought health insurance to 764,000 people who make too much money for Medicaid now, but don’t qualify for subsidies under Obamacare, so Florida Republicans can be proud that they have provided a real incentive to hundreds of thousands of people to get rich so they can not die from treatable illnesses.

I’d Like to Pay For This with Cookies

Dear Person on Craigslist Needing Professional Headshots in exchange for cookies,

Congratulations on your new business! I don’t know what that business is, exactly, because you didn’t say, but it doesn’t matter to me-all that matters is that this new business of yours requires you to get some “awesome headshots” taken by a “really creative professional photographer,” which, in turn, led you to advertise on Craigslist which then, led me to you and your incredible offer of a batch of cookies in return for my services.

Cookies for headshots!

Even as I type this, I can’t believe my good luck. Normally, you find some weird stuff on Craigslist, stuff that totally disparages and disrespects hard working photographers, and the photography profession as a whole, but today, all that changed.

There are some things I will need to know, though, before we work together. See, I’m used to accepting money and I’m not really sure how this whole cookie thing works. I’m a little Old School that way and for that, I apologize. I know you categorized it as “a batch of yummy cookies,” but what constitutes a batch? Is it a dozen? Two dozen? Will I get the broken cookies, as well? Can the batch be split into two different types of cookies? Is there any raw cookie dough included in the offer? Must all the cookies be baked at once, or can I request some now and some around the holidays? Do you use real butter? Will they have sprinkles on them and, if so, what colors?

As for your offer to allow me to use these images to promote MY business…SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! I thought nothing could top the offer of cookies but this…this did it. I’m getting a little emotional as I type thinking about how generous you are to allow me to use your images, purchased with a batch of cookies, to promote my business. It feels like I won the lottery.

American portions are huge, compared to elsewhere. I was eating half my restaurant meals, and taking the rest home for the next day’s lunch.

Now I’m back in China, and back to a mostly Chinese diet, out of necessity. There are no burger and steak joints around these parts, for example.

And the utilities he has used to do so are right out of Saul “the Red” Alinsky’s Communist handbook. Those of us who were paying close attention understood that America didn’t need changing and that Obama’s idea of change was to create a socialist state. We understood and warned people pursuant to exactly what Obama stood for, and we warned he was a neo-Leninist with a proclivity for radical Islam who would use skin color and class warfare to divide America.

Now, except for those who are in a terminal state of denial based on an Erebusic ideology and color of skin, there is no longer any doubt that Obama is a neo-Leninist Muslim sympathizer who is committed to transmogrifying America into something that will be unidentifiable to the America our Founding Fathers provided for vis-a-vis our Constitution.

1) There’s a shit load of sulfur dioxide being spewed into the atmosphere thanks to the current eruption in Iceland and there’s no sign that this will stop any time soon

2) The eruption is putting stress on other volcanoes which could cause them to erupt as well. That includes the largest volcano where a lot of the activity started

3) the magma being fed into this eruption is not from small magma chambers but looks to be from a very, very large magma reservoir and possibly from the mantle itself.

The good news it the input to output ratio has stabilized meaning that the lava being ejected is matching the lava entering into the eruption so it could slow, if not stop, the magma channel from reaching another volcano in the system

For a while it looked like the magma would push all the way from one volcano to another causing both to be A) joined and B) both to erupt.

Obama the socialist.

Manufacturing grows at fastest pace in 3.5 years.

The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, says its manufacturing index rose to 59 from 57.1 in July. Anything above 50 signals that manufacturing is growing.

A gauge of production rose to the highest level in four years, and a measure of new orders jumped to its highest in 10 years. That suggests that the sector should continue to grow in the coming months.

Where are they kept in the Krogers you use? With other sausages in the packaged meats, or might they be in the cooler in their health(ier) foods section that most Krogers now have? I don’t think I’ve seen that package, but wasn’t looking?

We have a Kroger Superstore and the meat department is huge. The Aidells stuff are in a sort of specialty section. They have a huge variety of sausage flavors.

Holy shit! Did Mike Brown rub rogaine on Office Wilson’s head before punching him?

And, this is the guy that was out mowing his lawn a day or so after the shooting?

Edit—the etnies link has the picture (happened in 2006). The poor guy died in 2011 (the espn story) and the rightwingers will still use his photo to make shit up.

ZOMG RINO!

GOPer Embraces The Pill After Retreating On Personhood Position

The new ad highlights Gardner’s shift since he jumped into the race for U.S. Senate to replace Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO).

“What’s the difference between me and Mark Udall on contraception? I believe the pill ought to be available over the counter, round the clock, without a prescription — cheaper and easier, for you,” Garder said in the ad, which showed a number of women nodding their heads as Gardner talked.

Gardner goes on to say that Udall’s “plan is different. He wants to keep government bureaucrats between you and your healthcare plan. That means more politics, and more profits for drug companies. My plan means more rights, more freedom, and more control for you — and that’s a big difference.”

I eagerly await the herpty derp from the far right loons about this.

re: #259 allegro

Yeah, I’m looking at online ordering but yikes, 4 pkg minimum with $8 shipping. Free ship if I order 7 or more but I have real limited freezer space. Grrr. Wonder why our Kroger’s don’t stock it?

Edit: LOL at Freudian slip.

Oh, and they are fully cooked. I’ve managed to keep them unopened in the fridge for a long time (like a few months).

Or at least every word of the gay movie “Broke my back Mountin’”

Well that took all of five minutes. The guy’s name was Jim McNeil and he was a freestyle motocross rider who died in 2011 during practice for an exhibition. The photo being used is from 2006, when he crashed & face planted.

These people are disgusting, utterly without shame.

re: #75 wheat-dogghazi

I spent a month in the USA and gained back the 5 kg I had lost after coming to China six years ago. Too much tasty food and great beer for my own good, I guess. And less walking, overall.

American portions are huge, compared to elsewhere. I was eating half my restaurant meals, and taking the rest home for the next day’s lunch.

Now I’m back in China, and back to a mostly Chinese diet, out of necessity. There are no burger and steak joints around these parts, for example.

I hope you enjoyed your time in the States. There were some nasty storm fronts while you were here but I’m sure China experiences similar.
