Have we asked Honey Boo for her thoughts on the first lady’s nutrition campaign? Really Fox, your’e so fucking lame for having this bigoted asshole on and treating him like he has any clue of how to handle a terrorist organization.

6 Dark_Falcon  Sep 2, 2014 8:30:56pm

I don’t understand this one at all. If you want to interview a wingnut about ISIS why not choose one who actually has military combat experience?

I’d understand bring on Allen West to discuss ISIS (though West is a nutjob), but Phil Robertson?

It makes no sense.

To be fair, I think Phil is a combat veteran but still. This frankly is why Fox stinks though. They think they can bring in on a man who has made his fortune selling duck whistles and treat him as if he’s as credible to talk about FP as POTUS is. Hannity’s a sad little man. NOT a veteran. Apologies.

Vietnam, right?

Yeah, I think he was Terry Bradshaw’s backup QB in college and then he either enlisted or was drafted. But at the same time, this is just stupid. The guy is a duck whistle call businessman not an expert on foreign policy. THis is just why Ben Carson is not credible too. Just because you’re knowledgeable at one thing doesn’t mean you should be treated like an authority on all things..

He’s not even much of an expert on the Bible.

“I’m as much of a homophobe as Jesus was,” Robertson said. “People who are participating in homosexual behavior, they need to know that I love them.”

He said this crap on Good Morning America, where they’re also not Bible experts, because if it’d been me, I’d have been asking ole Phil for chapter and verse on ANYTHING from Jesus related to homosexuality. (Answer: there’s nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada. But don’t expect the braindead morning news hosts to know that.)

I’m too pooped from my ride today to really look into it, but I’m fairly sure most murders in the United States are committed with pistols.

You can never tell when the Symbionese Liberation Army is going to hole up in your county and outgun ya. Which is why rural areas need surplus MRAPs supplied by the Gubmint. And SWAT teams. And MaTwos. And APCs.

Can’t be too careful. The problem with having that kind of equipment is that 99.99% of the time, it just sits there collecting dust. Sure is tempting to use it for a drug bust or a domestic disturbance, isn’t it?

In theory it should. But there are always ways around inconvenient details. The original text doesn’t say “the fetus dies”, it says “her fruit departs from her”. It’s relatively easy to fiddle with the translation to minimize the impact of this. For example, the New English Translation turns this into “… her child is born prematurely, but there is no serious injury.”

What I remember liking about him while he was far from the most moderate GOPer in the Senate, he was probably among the most diplomatic. He never struck me as an overly partisan guy like McCain has shown himself to be. I also had loads of respect for his military service. I think he understood war much better than many in the GOP including some of his fellow vets like McCain. But you’re right, as soon as Obama picked him, he became a HAmas sympathizer. It was nasty. The thing I remember is even when I was at my most partisan back then, I still thought enough of him to ask him a respectful question and he was polite to me and the whole group of oyung journalists that went that morning.I actually have a better memory of that then how Mary Landrieu who met my political science class the same year treated us. Not that I found her rude or anything but Hagel just gave me a good impression that he was a genuine statesman who put country beyond party, the whole thing that McCain has claimed he is about but has shown himself ot be anything but especially under Obama.

Huntsman polled worse than Herman Cain. That’s all you need to know about the GOP and how they flip out if Obama says anything nice about you. Really that Hunstman was seen as a “moderate” was just showing you how nutty the GOP base has gotten. The guy still wanted to abolish the EPA, still was anti choice, etc. He’s not a bad guy and I thought Obama was smart to choose him for the ambassadorship to the PRC but I wouldn’t want him as president but at the same time, he’s someone the GOP should be embracing rather than the nuts they did like the colossal panderer Romney, the religious bigot Santorum, the outright moron Perry, the has been pseudo intellecutal Gingrich, the nutcase Paul, or the way out of his fucking element Cain..

The pitiful bit is that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones makes everything about him. Wait for the press conference where he takes credit for being the most liberal owner in the league and embracing teh gay.

Barf.

I hope Sam finds a place a place in the the Cowboys organization. They need him. They ranked last in the NFL on defense last year, and their top four defensive players from that group are gone through injury, suspension, or salary clearance. They really, really suck.

Oops, was that inappropriate?

re: #74 HappyWarrior

I just always thought Hagel was an honest, sincere guy, and I agree with you that he understood/understands war and also veterans issues well.

I really can’t remember why I contacted him—he must have stood up for something against the party line, and even though I’ve always been a Democrat, he impressed me enough to write to him.

McCain’s behavior during his confirmation was disgraceful. It wasn’t surprising (to me, at least) as McCain has always been a petty, spiteful man. But he and Hagel were really good friends, and McCain treated him abominably.

And, of course it was idiot, Ben Shapiro, who spread the “Friends of Hamas” bullshit.

re: #88 austin_blue

I loathe Jerry Jones and I’m not a Cowboys fan at all, but if Michael Sam can fit in with them and bring them the defensive skills they desperately need, more power to them.

Plus it will absolutely piss off the rednecks and bigots in this state to have an openly gay player wearing a Cowboys jersey. That’s a nice added bonus. Haha.

The evangelicals have their own translations and a whole bunch of them read the same way. Of course they’re bullshit, but you asked about how they dealt with Exodus 21:22, and that’s one of the major ways.

But it’s a new development; until 1996, Evangelicals also accepted the “miscarriage” translation — when they suddenly realized that the scripture didn’t back up their views on a political issue… well, obviously it was scripture that needed changing.

McCain to me showed his true colors when he just went along with many of the attacks on Senator Kerry’s service record too. McCain as I said has long pretended to be the statesman that Hagel actually was and is. Hagel is someone who looks at the bigger picture regardless of who is in charge. McCain is an opportunist jackass who loves media attention. I had respect for McCain once upon a time but he’s been nothing but a shameful hypocritical publicity junkie to me since the 2004 election.

And I remember when Obama picked him for the ambassadorship, people were saying Obama was playing three-dimensional chess by sending his biggest competition out of the country and “tainting” him for the future with Republicans.

Maybe that was what Obama was thinking—it certainly worked out to be true.

I dunno. I think Obama probably was rooting out a potential rival but at the same time he picked a qualified candidate for the job too. I dunno. But speaking of Huntsman, where he really gained my respect during the GOP debates was when he talked about China. Romney especially loved to saber rattle about China even though his own companies profited from business with China. Huntsman was smart and not doing the usual scare tactics. I think he could possibly one day end up being a diplomatic version of the above mentored Hagel and make a decent SoS in a Democratic administration should a Democrat want to go that route.

I honestly think you can tell a lot about a candidate by looking at his advisers. Obama’s advisers I remember were pretty serious people. Samantha Powers who I believe took Susan Rice’s place was one of them and I remember her book A Problem From Hell being recommended by my Republican Congressman when he visited my high school. Romney I remember had guys like John Bolton advising him on FP and Kris Kobach of course was his immigration adviser. I still love how Obama called Mitt out on that when Mitt tried to weasel on immigration during the debates. I also remember McCain having Phil Gramm as an economic adviser and Gramm calling people whiners who were upset about the economy. Obama has always struck me as a guy who values a good team of people much like Lincoln did. It makes sense that Obama enjoyed Team of Rivals since he’s gone with that type of approach.

I agree with you about Huntsman—I think he could be of value to the country in the future, as long as he didn’t have to pander to Republicans.

One thing I found interesting, speaking of Romney and Huntsman, is that even though I believe Huntsman and his father ended up endorsing Mitt, there was no love lost between those two families. As far back as when “Mitt rode in to save the Olympics,” Huntsman Sr. in particular was none too fond of him.

One of the first things Romney did when he got to Utah was appoint a fellow Mormon as his second in command. This did not sit well with Jon Huntsman, Sr., who said,

“We’ve got a chairman [Garff] who is active LDS, now we’ve got a present CEO who is active LDS. They claim they’re going out and really scouring the world to find the best person, so Mitt brings in one of his cronies to be the COO. Another broken promise. Because we’ve got three LDS folks who are all cronies. Cronyism at its peak. They told the world and told Salt Lake that we’re going to go out and find the most professional, the best, and to have some diversity—spiritual and ethnic. Diversity in the Olympic Games is what it’s all about. These are not the Mormon Games.”

Interesting. Was not aware of that. Honestly what always did disappoint me about Mitt was how he was the total opposite of his father. George Romney actually was pretty bold in being a prominent LDS politician that took a strong stand in favor of civil rights and Mitt actually went from supporting LGBT rights(even have seen ads of him trying to out left Teddy Kennedy on the issue) to accusing POTUS of trying to force gay marriage. Mitt in short is a coward. Huntsman while I wish he were pro gay marriage deserves some credit for at least being in favor of civil unions and not going out of his way to demonzie gay people.

Hollingsworth Homicides Connected To LEC Shooting

Investigators have tied shootings at three locations in Greenville County over the past few days back to one suspect.

Evan Casey Bennett, 23, is accused of shooting a Greenville police officer Monday night and fatally shooting three other people in the days prior before turning the gun on himself.

[…]

Loftis said Bennett killed two security guards at the old Hollingsworth textile factory on Friday and killed his stepfather, 58-year-old Gregory Thomas Jones, Monday night after he confronted Bennett about the Hollingsworth shootings.

Loftis said Bennett made comments about killing the guards to his family weeks ago, but they didn’t take him seriously until they found out the guards were dead.

[…]

The sheriff said after Bennett’s family confronted him about the killings Monday night at their home on 18 Augusta Court, Bennett went into his room and came out carrying a shotgun and wearing black tactical gear and camouflage pants.

A witness told police Bennett shot his stepfather twice in the face then came to the Law Enforcement Center on McGee Street half an hour later to continue his shooting spree.

“After shooting his stepfather, Evan Casey Bennett made the statement to a witness at the scene the war is just beginning,” said Loftis.

[…]

Loftis said Bennett went to a psychiatrist once in the past, but was not prescribed any medication.

The sheriff’s office arrested Bennett back in 2011 for stalking a woman, but the case was dismissed by the solicitor’s office.

concerning the Bible translation debate about the dead/”premature” baby, one must remember this must be be put into context that we’re talking about a completely paternalistic society that many on the far right wish to emulate. In this sort of society, it really doesn’t matter if the baby is dead or not, the wife and the baby are HIS property.

This statute in Exodus describes not criminal matter- but one of Civil law. Clearly the life of a fetus/baby according to the literal interpretation of the Bible is a matter of property loss and not one of a “life” as modern Christo-crats claim.

If women/negroes were property, their (white male) owners would be motivated to take good care of them.

That is an underlying thought behind the ideology of many of those who wish to return our society to “Biblical principles”.

Much more important than the unsubstantiated claims that there were aircraft stolen in Libya.

This isn’t just a waiver-wire deal for second tier players. We’re talking about regional terror threats that have shown a disturbing efficiency in murdering civilians in the regions they operate in.

They’re moving away from the al Qaeda umbrella and are now shifting their focus/identities towards ISIS, which continues to be a regional threat in the Middle East, but which has aspirations for a wider conflict.

They may find that the increased aspirations has a huge downside, namely a greater focus and attention by the US and Europeans as well as local partners to go after these groups once and for all.

Until now, the US and regional allies have gone after ISIS piecemeal, along with Abu Sayaaf, JI, and Boko Haram. They’ll have to make a much more coordinated response, which means we’ll also see a spike in UAV strikes against leadership in those groups as well. The US has already shown that it’s willing to take the fight to these terror groups across borders, and the group is posing a more direct threat against US interests, so the Administration is addressing this threat more directly.

But the GOP will continue to claim the President doesn’t have a strategy, and that the US should do more. Of course, soundbites from people like Sen. McCain give up the game, and that the action the president should have taken back in 2013 would have played right into ISIS hands now - namely giving ISIS weapons and support in their fight against Assad.

148 lawhawk  Sep 3, 2014 6:23:23am

On topic.

Since when is Phil Robertson the expert in anything, other than making duck decoys and selling his comfortably upper middle class family as a redneck icons to sell even more stuff?

If that’s what Fox thinks is sufficient to be called in to provide an opinion on ISIS and national security, who’s the unserious ones? Here’s a hint. Fox.

Hannity couldn’t get anyone - anyone - to do this segment? So he had to go with Robertson? ID-10T error. Need to reboot.

Scalia once called lethal injection ‘enviable’ for death row inmate cleared by DNA evidence

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia once singled out a North Carolina death row inmate as an example of someone who deserved to die - but his conviction was overturned Tuesday after he was exonerated by DNA evidence.

Henry Lee McCollum and his half-brother, Leon Brown, both of whom are mentally disabled, were cleared in the brutal rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl 30 years ago.

Scalia wrote a 1994 opinion in an unrelated case that cited McCollum as a reason to keep the death penalty, reported the Huffington Post.

Same goes for Jon Huntsman. He was a reliable wingnut and considered a rising GOP star and possible nominee for President in 2012. Then he accepted Obama’s appointment to be Ambassador to China and suddenly he couldn’t pay people to notice him.

I don’t think I’d call Huntsman a wingnut. If he was a wingnut, he wouldn’t have taken that ambassadorship. Plus he’s said some things which would not sit well with right-wing Christians (e.g., about creationism). And he like s Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica. He can’t be all bad.

PS He was also a halfway decent governor of Utah and loosened up the liquor laws a bit to the point where the wingnutty legislature tightened them up again after he left.

Seriously, though, very happy to hear these men were exonerated, but you can’t give them 30 years of their lives back. Scalia should be doing public repentance in sackcloth and ashes for his asshattery. I’d be happy to whip his back with knotted ropes, just to keep it all Catholic-y and penance-y.

I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. Really, the only real difference between Robertson and ISIS is ISIS seems to actually willing to back up their crazy talk. I suppose it is a relief that Robertson is just a coward but at the same time espousing this rhetoric is just vile.

In ISIS, and al Quaeda, and many other groups, there are imams who spout hateful rhetoric without ever picking up a weapon. That’s left for the young, the strong, the martyrs. Also note that it’s a mix of religion and politics, not like fundies here.

The difference between American Taliban and the real thing is they live in countries ravaged by war, in a perpetual state of war. Amidst the carnage and savagery more savagery is really not that surprising. ISIS is trying to out savage everybody, and they’re doing a good job of it. And they’re getting free press from Fox News.

American Taliban can spout their hate then go to Chick-Fil-A for dinner and a movie on Saturday night, then church on Sunday: despite how horrible they say America is, it really isn’t. We got it easy. They speak of sin, disdain, culturally marginalizing and isolating others they judge to be impure. Sometimes there’s an eruption of their real selves (abortion doctor murders). So American Taliban are evil, but they aren’t ISIS: they don’t actually behead anybody or line up people and mow them down with AK’s.

But if society collapses here I have no doubt they’d lock and load then start ‘converting’ the rest of us.

I actually wasn’t aware of that. Knew about the support for getting rid of the EPA but not that one. Really that Huntsman is seen as a GOP moderate shows you how low that party is going. He’s not a moderate. If he had ran in the 2000 primaries, he would haev been to Bush and McCain’s right.

Yep. Huntsman could have been a credible nominee, since he’s got a skill set based in diplomacy. He could’ve easily brushed over his more wingnutty views as just standard GOP politicking and made a solid case for the presidency if the party had nominated him.

Unfortunately for him, taking the ambassadorship made him a literal Manchurian Candidate for the nutters. IIRC there were theories on Free Republic that he was a spy for Beijing because Huntsman is fluent in Mandarin, so he’d be able to trade secrets to the Chinese and no one else would know. Yes, the morans at FR really are that dumb.

Wednesday morning Fox News feminism drinking game!

Drink any time the panelists invent a nonsense word, like “sexualist.”
Drink any time the panelists reinforce gender norms (“Stop shaving, men!”) or gendered class norms (Sofia Vergara is “classy”!).
Drink any time the panelists make a concerted effort to assure everyone that they’re totally straight, we promise.
Drink any time the panelists accuse feminists of being like cavewomen, when we clearly prefer the gender neutral term “cavepeople.”
Drink every time the host mentions how attractive her guests are. Then take a double shot when one of the guests says she doesn’t want to be objectified and the host vehemently agrees with her.

Youtube Video

It’s difficult to tell who is the guest and who is the Fox Employee

Yep. I always associate late August and September with Yellow Jackets. And I am guessing there is a nest in the ground somewhere below the tree and some kind of a sweet food source nearby. They are in Yellow Jacket heaven.

Watch your food and drinks…they love to get into glasses and cans. And of course always remember they are a pain in the butt, easy to get pissed off and unlike a honey bee, they can sting repeatedly.

A pharmacy alone isn’t a sustainable big business. There are still a few individual ones around, but even they sell other products to make a profit for the owner(s) ((sundries like blood pressure kits, band-aids, otc meds, personal care items ,,, candy,, soda

For the national chains to be profitable, the pharmacy is what brings people in, but the aisles stocked with merchandise keeps the doors opened

Feinstein is not exactly the best person to talk on this. She has shown astoundingly poor judgment before. Like how she dealt with Richard Ramirez.

When it was discovered that the ballistic and shoe print evidence from the Night Stalker crime scenes matched the Pan crime scene, then-mayor of San Francisco Dianne Feinstein divulged the information in a televised press conference.[77] This leak infuriated the detectives in the case, as they knew that the killer would be following media coverage and have an opportunity to destroy crucial forensic evidence.[77] Ramirez, who had indeed been watching the press, dropped his size 11 1/2 Avia sneakers over the side of the Golden Gate Bridge that night.[78] He remained in the area for a few more days before heading back to the L.A. area.[78]

Interesting in regards to the 1783 Laki Eruption:

The [European] summer of 1783 was the hottest on record and a rare high pressure zone over Iceland caused the winds to blow to the south-east. The poisonous [sulphur dioxide] cloud drifted to Bergen in Denmark-Norway, then spread to Prague in the Kingdom of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) by 17 June, Berlin by 18 June, Paris by 20 June, Le Havre by 22 June, and Great Britain by 23 June. The fog was so thick that boats stayed in port, unable to navigate, and the sun was described as “blood coloured”.

As Mayor of SF, one of her most controversial moves was putting up City money for a $10M retrofit at Candlestick Park. Her opponents felt she should have forced private sector actors with an interest in the stadium and its teams to pay for it — even if that meant new zoning, building codes, lawsuits, and years of delay.

When Loma Prieta happened, and twenty thousand people didn’t die of having a stadium fall on them… that $10M sure looked like money well spent.

Eh. My non-lawyer take on the judge’s ruling is that “it’s OK for people to make discriminatory laws as long as the victims of those laws don’t manage to persuade enough people that they deserve better”.

Which, when you think about it, is pretty much the definition of democracy. The difference between “liberals” and “conservatives” being where your threshold is for detecting and caring about the negative effects of discrimination.

Oh, this is just something that’s bugged me for a long time, not just this ruling. Rational basis allows what you say, essentially - that as long as the state can show they have some interest, very little direct scrutiny applies. To discriminate in law based on race/gender/religion, however, they have to show a much more compelling reason - heightened scrutiny. They can still do it if they show that there is some very necessary/compelling reason for the State to do so, but the bar is higher.

I believe it should be that way for sexual orientation, but thus far the courts have not applied that standard - which this ruling particularly calls out as a reason why he sticks to rational basis, which leads to his THINK OF THE CHILDREN call. Because that is a perfectly legit reason to deny equal protection to all citizens. My childless marriage does not thank him.

Fair enough. My impression of pretty much all lawyers is that they decide what they want their conclusion to be and work backwards from there. I don’t particularly mind - in fact I think it’s what everyone does in terms of moral decisions, so why should lawyers be any different?

I only get slightly worked up about it when they go out of their way to claim they’re doing anything different, which is usually in cases of “this ruling may seem like I’m being an asshole but really the constitution is making me do it” (exhibit A of this tendency being Scalia).

I’d say that is a BS distinction.

You’ve either committed a felony (A-D) or a misdemeanor.

Misdemeanors are crimes punishable by up to a year in prison (and/or fine).

Felonies are any crimes punishable by imprisonment for one year or more.

Even the lowest rated felony is punishable by up to 5 years in prison (that’d include fraud, passing bad checks, etc.).

Robberies, murder, etc., can include Felony A sentencing - minimum 10 max 30 years, or life in prison.

Gah.

That’s why the anti-gay adoption people are so fucking cruel. They’d rather put kids with abusive people who are straight than loving people who are gay. That’s cruel and that’s why I’ll always oppose denying gay people the right to adopt.

Kids in a single parent home are just straight out screwed.

Also, Thanksgiving has always been celebrated exactly like a Norman Rockwell painting-even before he painted it.

They’ve thwarted the public’s knowledge by issuing half-assed reports, sitting on the name of the officer involved, and otherwise ignoring proper procedures.

Something like that, you’re not going to get customized. Costs at least $35 to produce a screen so the price of the shirt (to make it worthwhile for the vendor) would be at least $75

Just got back from shopping and saw this.

Today there are printers that can produce a graphic on a tee-shirt that looks just like screen printing, but with a finer line screen/dot pattern. And they can lay down a white background on a dark shirt and print up to 6 colors on top of it. And the ink/powder gets heat set and lasts as long as good old screen ink/dye. No screen charge and they can produce low numbers, even one if needed.

I know a local guy that prints many tee shirts and went with him when he was looking at the printer. Not cheap, but for what it does…wow!

Or they bring up someone from the practice squad. There aren’t that many veterans in great playing shape just waiting to be picked up. The game is so violent most guys are in and then out of the league for good in less than 3 years.

Point is, Sam is in a much better position than if he hadn’t even made a practice squad. Teams are afraid of the distraction, somewhat understandable and totally expected in a culture like the NFL.

Exactly. There are many online t-shirt companies and if you read through their processes you will see they offer direct to shirt printing.

The guy I mentioned is online too.

He also gets his screened Tees done in Mexico for a ridiculously cheap price. I think he said they can give him a 4-color printed shirt (Haines Beefy-t, a standard) for like $2.50, shirt and printing. Hard to compete with that.

He also uses heat transfers which when done properly look like a screened shirt too.
