So, Gov. McDonnell’s guilty on multiple counts. His wife is likewise guilty on multiple counts. Not surprising on either.

The defense theory of the case was so insane that no one bought it, least of all the jury.

But, with that kind of thinking, McDonnell’s probably got a future as a HuffPo contributor when he gets out of prison.

I like how this opinion bypasses the “strict scrutiny”, “intermediate scrutiny” etc. analysis, the better to focus on the farcical natural of the arguments put forth by the states.

E.g., pointing out that Indiana’s allowing elderly first cousins to marry because they can’t procreate is hardly consistent with Indiana’s argument that gay marriage can be banned because they can’t procreate.

I think cats regularly leave better legal arguments on the carpet and in the litterbox.

So let’s take stock of today so far:

The good:

1) DOJ is investigating the Ferguson and St Louis police.
2) Early voting restored in Ohio and voter restrictions overturned
3) SSM bans in Michigan and Indiana ruled unconstitutional
4) McDonnell convicted
5) BP found negligent over spill in the gulf
6) U.S. Airstrikes took out a bunch of ISIS leadership
7) Decision by D.C. court to undo ACA withdrawn (full court to hear the case)

The bad:

why is it overkill? re: #105 Brother Holy Cruise Missile of Mild Acceptance

The bad:

1) RIP Joan Rivers

We’ve seen it time and again in political corruption cases, the belief among the corrupt that they’re untouchable and no attempt to bring them to justice will succeed. If you listen to the Freepers tell it, this is all just a ploy to destroy McDonnell as a future presidential candidate, that he did nothing wrong.

Agreed. In fact I’d like to see a policy that the richest and most privileged and connected prisoners are preferentially sent to the worst available prison facilities to serve their time.

That would make prison reform happen in a hurry.

In all honesty, I don’t think people should be allowed to subsist merely on welfare payouts. What I DO think would be fair would be to have welfare PLUS minimum wage be a decent, livable amount. That way, welfare recipients would be encouraged to find a (singular) minimum-wage or better job, but wouldn’t have to work 6 part-time jobs to make ends meet, or try to subsist on substandard income.

Reading this moron’s twitter feed reminds me of that young woman that discovers feminism or that young man who discovers the theoretical underpinnings of Socialism in their first year of college and insists on taking us all along on their journey of discovery as if s/he has uncovered a mystery that has befuddled us all for our adult life.
His Twitter feed is the most self obsessed, narcissistic display of immaturity that I have seen from anyone over the age of 19 in a long time.

From Jason’s report:

Republicans are fighting to keep the Democratic candidate’s name on the ballot, because Sen. Roberts would be in grave danger of losing to Independent candidate Greg Orman. The Independent has promised to caucus with the Senate’s other two Independents who caucus with the Democrats. Republicans are terrified that Orman will unite the left and center of the state, and defeat Sen. Roberts.

Roberts is in so much danger that the national Republican Party has taken over his campaign. Republicans are hitting the panic button as they could lose a Senate seat in Kansas. This is the why the fight over keeping Taylor’s name on the ballot will be heading to court.

If Taylor is off the ballot Democratic chances of keeping the Senate improve as Republicans may be denied their majority dream by a Democrat, who quit in Kansas.

Conservationists studying bats in Arizona were recently confronted by a group of armed militia members who confused them for border crossers or smugglers, a local sheriff told television station KOLD.

The TV station reported on Tuesday that Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said the militia members were wearing camouflage and were heavily armed when they arrived on ATVs and confronted the scientists on the night of Aug. 23.

“Obviously they mistook them for smugglers or illegal entrants,” said Estrada. “They were armed. They put a spotlight on them.”

Officer was nice, didn’t clasp me irons, said it was for a “Failure to satisfy ticket”, that it had been suspended for about a year. Local clerks office couldn’t find anything on their system, but it showed up on the state system.

Apparently I had a 140 dollar ticket somewhere that I didn’t pay (which isn’t like me, as a DB guy, I know that it’s all one big system). I paid that online, tomorrow AM I should have an email confirming I’m legal again. If I DO have to go to the local license office, I’m bringing a book. So, do you think these remarks

were absolutely hideous and the motive behind them was despicable,” Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch (R) said.

?

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said Thursday that she “shouldn’t have used” charged language to describe Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) record on women’s issues.

The congresswoman ripped Walker at a Wednesday roundtable in Milwaukee for giving “women the back of his hand” by signing a bill that prevents victims of employment discrimination from seeking punitive and compensatory damages in state courts.

“What Republican tea party extremists like Scott Walker are doing is they are grabbing us by the hair and pulling us back. It is not going to happen on our watch,” she added.

Just when you thought Meet the Press couldn’t get any worse, what with Chuck Todd as the host…

NBC is bringing in Luke Russert, son of the late beloved “Meet the Press” host Tim Russert, as a regular panelist on the Sunday morning show in a bid to turn around its catastrophic ratings slide, Page Six has exclusively learned.

Also joining new moderator Chuck Todd’s team will be former Republican congressman and “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough.

Honestly, our sides are already split from laughing so hard, but it would be irresponsible of us not to share this delightfully delusional assessment, per Page Six, of just why America needs even more Joe Scarborough.

We’re told the move is part of a plan to bring a right-leaning voice to the program to appeal to viewers turned off by the show’s famously left-leaning former hosts including the ousted David Gregory.

We assume the phrase “famously left-leaning” refers to David Gregory physically and not politically.

Bardarbunga really isn’t worth worrying about at the moment. And research should never exclusively be Some Guy Said, which is Chuck’s sole MO.

Honestly, I use my credit card for most day-to-day purchases and then pay it off in full every paycheck. That way, if something really bad happens, I can either pay it in cash/check, or put it also on the credit card, and simply not pay the full balance until I have the required funds on hand. That being said, I’m sorry to hear that and I hope everything balances out.

All of Chuck C. Johnson’s “scoops” regarding Michael Brown are simply attempts to make Brown look bad enough that bigoted white people can point to “Brown’s bad character” when they assert “The thug deserved to get shot dead!”

Note: In this case, ‘thug’ is often but not always a substitute for the n-word. As the n-word cannot be said most places on the Internet, ‘thug’ is deployed as an alternative. The actual thug in the matter was actually Darin Wilson, because shooting a man in the back is the act of a thug.

7th Circuit court decision on SSM is really great fun to read.

Indeed it is. So many juicy nuggets of legal fail dissected by the judges.

For example, Indiana will apparently recognize as legal a first-cousin marriage from states where these are legal (e.g., TN), but will not recognize SSM from states where that is legal.

Indiana has not tried to explain to us the logic of recognizing marriages of fertile first cousins (prohibited in Indiana) that happen to be contracted in states that permit such marriages, but of refusing, by virtue of the 1997 amendment, to recognize same-sex marriages (also prohibited in Indiana) contracted in states that permit them. This suggests animus against same-sex marriage, as is further suggested by the state’s inability to make a plausible argument for its refusal to recognize same-sex marriage.

Notice anything unusual in that Washington Post article?

That scouting report will doubtless please Stallworth, who is transitioning from a decade-long NFL career that included stints with the New Orleans Saints, the Philadelphia Eagles, the New England Patriots and Washington’s own professional football squad.

One of those teams didn’t get their team name mentioned. It will be interesting to see the creative writing that goes on this year on publications with that policy.

Heh I saw that. There was a story in the WaPo not that long ago about retired ref Mike Carey and how he would ask not to ref their games and in the interview he would not refer to them as the Redskins. And yes they are one of the four teams on that list I brought up even if my team only plays them once four years. Sick of Snyder defending the racist name and the jerky fans who blindly insist it’s not racist.

Frankly, that’s the difference between a liberal and conservative right now. A liberal sees a minimum wage worker and sees a person. Conservative sees something to look down upon because the person isn’t successful.

“Reciting ‘So help me God’ in the reenlistment and commissioning oaths is a statutory requirement under Title 10 USC 502,” Air Force spokeswoman Rose Richeson said Thursday. AFI 36-2606 “is consistent with the language mandated in 10 USC 502. Paragraph 5.6 [and] was changed in October 2013 to reflect the aforementioned statutory requirement and airmen are no longer authorized to omit the words ‘So help me God.’ “

The Air Force said it cannot change its AFI to make “so help me God” optional unless Congress changes the statute mandating it.

Miller pointed out that Article VI of the Constitution prohibits requiring religious tests to hold an office or public trust.

I wonder whose bright idea that was.

Yeah it’s hard for me to but you know I do make the effort. They’re terribly wrong and bigoted but I would never want to deny them something like benefits if they were entitled to them or disaster relief if their area was devastated by a hurricane or tornado.

US conservatives really are getting close to embracing Orwell’s model: “a boot stamping on a human face —- forever” as a goal.

I paid that online, tomorrow AM I should have an email confirming I’m legal again.

Hang on to that email: best advice re paying tickets/fines I ever had was from the guy hauling my car away from in front of my apt. building in NYC: Always/only pay online and keep the printout. It would have saved me an unwanted trip (two, really) to the ass end of Brooklyn to bail my car out. Well, that or $950 cash, which was kind of a problem late on a Sunday night. Dunno if they’re any more efficient in TN than NY, but online confirmation is a magic document here…..
